So today I made this amazing mince pie! My gran used to call it ‘sheet pie’ but I like to call it ‘mince slice’ but whatever you want to call it, it is simply a massive mince pie :) Seriously easy to make…and absolutely delicious. Hope you give it a go!

Hello from across the pond! My husband's family moved here from Cumbernald to California in the sixties. I love listening to you because you sound like my mother-in-law, who I adored and miss tremendously! I've been to Scotland several times to visit family and I find so much peace in your videos! Blessings to you!
Oh I’m gonna give this a go. Wee Scottish lassie, I’ve been in Australia 33 yrs, nice to here a voice from home …
Yum! This is my kind of Scottish channel ... none of the fake news channels spewing out SNP propaganda! School dinners at my primary school in the 50's served tasty, nutritious dishes like this! All meals made from scratch!
Brings back memories my mother worked in the school meals as a cook give minutes from my school my best pal and I always went round for seconds I'm 72 and you've brought it all back thank you.
Not only does that look wonderful but I love listening to your accent!
Away to Arran, nice.
I had extra School dinners during part of my school life after my Summer Essay in English lesson made my Teacher cry. I can still remember Minced beef and onion slice because I ate so much of it. If there was any left in the tray, a Teacher would chuck on what Veg was left, to save on washing up. And I'd have to sit there and eat it all out of the tray, whilst the Cleaners worked around me and adults whispered about me to the Teacher, and I could take no notice of any normal School life.
Some Days I'd have to finish off a huge jug of custard and some sponge as well. As such i really enjoyed School dinners.
In my School the Kitchen was open plan so we could see Cook pricking the bottom.
I really don't remember it being so Golden, maybe they had been a bit tight on the wash, Milk if I remember rightly, and after everyone else had left to go back to Lessons, Minced slice was a few hours old and had been kept warm, and as such was much drier than the out of the oven version. If there was no Gravy left I might be lucky and there might be Baked Beans left. Mash, Slice and Baked Beans, wow!
Made this with minced pork that needed using - used chicken stock and some dried sage - worked beautifully - served with sprouting brocolli and mash!
Sounds great. I'm going to try both ways. Thank you.
Beef is better thank pork. In every way possible.
I made this for my husband as a treat as I rarely make pastry things.... We had it when my mother flew in from Scotland, she's making another visit this week and has requested the mince pie again!! Back again to remind myself of the recipe! Thank you!
Your meals are so comforting, you cook so well 😊
Hi, I'm sure our dinner ladies used plain flour to thicken the mince. I always loved school dinners especially mince beef pie and through experimentation managed to reproduce the flavour and texture. The flour just mnakes it for me. Thanks.
I would use flour also. I'd stir it into the cooked meat, before adding the water. You get a nice gravy that way.
Went up and made this but added a bit of Worcester Sauce, some pepper, and a tiny bit of Bisto, can't wait to assemble tonight!!! Had a bit of the mince with bread and butter (just to taste😊), GLORIOUS!!!
I love your videos , I have very wonderful Scottish friends here in Australia, , they tell me about school lunch , we never had that here , thanks for sharing
Thank god a Scottish cooking youtuber lmao was starting to talk american watching all these wans lmao
If you Google John kirkwood he’s the RUclipsr you should follow..his cooking recipes and tutorials are great…
Excellent recipe 👌🏻 Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a lovely day everyone 🌻
Good afternoon!
Making this for tonight. Absolutely delicious 😋
Nothing like this here in Canada but definitely going to try it in the fall!!
Its like a simpler version of tourtierre.
@@SandraNelson063 I would be a happy woman if I could nail the tourtiere.. just nvr found a recipe that tastes right. The one from costco is pretty good tho. Funny. I absolutely hated when I parents brought home hot meat pies from the bakery for dinner!
I used to love my school dinners in Scotland
Made this tonight. Followed the instructions and it was very easy and cooked perfectly. You could literally add any fillings such as Cheese and Onion, Steak and Kidney, Meat and Potato or even Cherry or Apple etc. Very satisfying.
That totally wakened my memory of the taste. I'll need to make it when finally I have a bunch of family with me. It's just a wee bit too much for only me.
I think it freezes well if you want to make it for yourself. Then again, it's nice to share a delicious meal.😊
Valerie you could do what l do when l'm cooking for one. Cut the pastry into 6 and make 6 smaller ones. Take 5 of them out about 10 minutes early and cook the 6th for the full time. Eat the one and freeze the other 5 when they're cool. Wrap them separately and you'll be able to take out as many or as few as you want. When you're ready to eat another one, thaw it and cook it for the 10 minutes it missed out on. It will come up like freshly baked. 🙂
I had to rewind the whole "primary school" thing to make sure she really said it. As a half yank, our school lunches had something called "flying saucers". While there are many variants, my school's interpretation was a slice of bologna, a plop of mashed potatoes (instant) on top, with a pile of shredded cheese to cover it Then it was slapped in an oven until the cheese melted and the edges of the bologna curled. Afterwards, it was scooped on a lunch tray and slung to us. Had I known of this alternate reality, I would have demanded to go live with my aunt in Newton Mearns.
Growing up in the UK, I remember delicious school dinners, complete with great desserts, sorry you didn't have the same..
I wonder if they still do school dinners, cooked from scratch in the school kitchens. I don't live there now, so no one to ask, perhaps google knows😊
@@margaretr5701 still made from scratch in the school I work at. Although now schools dinners are a bit more cosmopolitan eg curry, lasagna, Spag bol, pizza but we still have cheese and onion flan, mince pie , cheesy potato, sausage and mash, roast dinner once a week.
Scottish school dinners used to be amazing. I feel sorry for the children now having to have ‘healthy’ lunches. Tasteless, tiny portions. 😕
@@annerutherford1187 nice to hear!😋 One of my favourites used to be cod, mashed potatoes and peas, very plain but I liked it! School dinner desserts were the best. Looking back, I really admire how organised it was, the school, originally built for 3,000, had over 7,000 students, and if I recall correctly, we had dinners in shifts! Well done to the dinner ladies, hard working angels😇😇😇 I also remember teachers stood by to keep order! We were very quiet, no talking, single file, etc. Everyone was nice though, no bad memories. Keep up the good work, Anne!
@@margaretr5701 My great aunt used to put cut potatoes in a baking dish, cover them with frozen cod fillets, then put a package of frozen cut spinach on top of that, and then poured cream of mushroom soup (Campbell's) all over it, and bake it for about an hour. It always was delicious.
Hi Cheryl this brings back memories of my primary school dinners 😋 definitely going to be making this delicious! x
This looks sooo good, I'm now absolutely starving! Thank you for another tasty dose of nostalgia. 😊
Dang it ! Why couldn't I have grown up in Scotland and eaten that ! 🤓
Looks delicious. I love real food like this. Thank you for sharing 💜
That's dinner sorted for tonight! 😁
Video came just in time, because I'm on my way to the shops and can pick up the pastry sheets! 💙
Ayrshire potatoes.....the very best spud in the world...Yum!
What a wonderful meal! So simple and filling plus tasty. This is one recipe that I will be making. Thanks Cheryl
Here in the Netherlands we don't have school dinners. Everybody brings a lunch box with slices of bread and a jug with milk or something like that.
But this really looks delicious!😋
I'm definitely going to try this recipe!
So thank you for sharing!
Saying hi from the Netherlands 🤗
Letting you know that I made this for my Family and my eldest son and his girlfriend....was a complete WINNER. I needed to make more as their were requests for 2nds. I made it with peas and served it on mashed potatoes (butter&cream) Family recipe now. Thank you from New Zealand
Brilliant!!! Can fix this and not bother with cooking for a few days. Left overs and maybe melt cheese on it by the 3rd day. Thank you for the recipes.
Hey, Cheryl. I must have done something wrong. I followed your instructions exactly but, I only got three portions...... (and I had two of 'em). :-)
@@danielvallelunga1596 MEA CULPA< MEA CULPA... BUT it was so damn good. (took 45 mins to cook and 25 to eat... is that beyond naughty? :-)
@TheRenaissanceman65 Yes. Yes I do. Here, you haven't been talking to my mum, have you? (To be fair (warning: incoming excuse posing as a reason), I hadn't eaten since the morning before (porridge) and I was thinking of getting a couple of steak bakes from Greggs. Since I already had the ingredients, I thought why not? After taking it out of the oven I had a coupla pieces. 'Wonder if my son would like some?' I asked him but, due to him being asleep and in another room 12 feet away, he didn't answer. I took that as a 'No thanks, dad' and well, the rest is gluttony. I meean, HISTORY. HISTORY!
Ahahaha!
Wouldn't bother with it mate. Make you're own Recipe. Sure you won't have to blag about it on RUclips either. All the best 👍
Oink oink when you eat
The Scots can do anything with mince it's a favourite down here in Yorkshire, I particularly love the Bridies that you have up there in the bakers shops
You dont get brownies down there?
andy d asked for a School Cheese Pie recipe.....yes please!!!!!!!
Looks delicious and beautifully simple and tasty
Oh my lord.. 🤯🤯🤯 thanksgiving/Christmas left overs!!!! Yes! Turkey, keep back a few bits of veg before mashing, some gravy, and some newfie savoury.. oh yes!!!! Just made myself a note for October to try this! :) ty!!
My hubby loves savoury mince pie. His mum used to be a proper school cook and the kids in the local primary had really nice meals made by Olwen. And cakes too.
My American husband will love this.
We had these pies at school in England too! Always enjoyed seconds!
Fantastic Cheryl! 😋 x
Glorious and classic. Many thanks. You are a culinary champion.
This looks wonderful. Going to school in the US I never had anything this nice. Hello from Oregon USA.
I loved school dinners! Especially the mince and tatties!
And the sponge cake with thin layer of chocolate and pink custard. We also used to get shortbread with a fluffy caramel topping, again with pink custard. We used to get this mince pie with mashed potatatoes and diced beetroot. Loved it.
Will definitely be making this recipe thank you so much for this gorgeous recipe and great step by step guide thank you so much enjoy your break 😊
In Eastern Europe we use filo pastry.
I love your Scottish recipe.
Please make snowballs. You are wonderful Cheryl.
Nice!! Absolutely delicious!!
Happy Wednesday...blessings and much love...
Yummy yum yum.
Yes I am trying that one out. I like simple stuff 😃.
Getting this on the list to make ASAP! It looks amazing xxx
You make everything look easy and simple cheryl..I am definitely going to make this.thank you.
Omigosh🌟 My boys will love this!! I am so happy I found you! Thank you!
Hi Cheryl....your dinner looks so appetizing! Good old comfort food for sure
This is right up my street, looks delicious 😋
I make this often, my version of a Greg's fake away, also it is very nice to do a mince curry version just for a change. just add some curry powder to the mix.
I love all your recipes, I live away from Scotland now and miss all this stuff so will be making this soon x
That's all I can remember about school dinners, is mince and semolina pudding!
Very nice recipe & techniques shown. Great pie for all occasions ☺❤
Love it Cheryl I got the doings I give this a go xxx👍👍🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
Know what I like about this - accessible ingredients.
I have a pretty extensive larder - got most of your spices, pastes and sauces. MSG - got it, Mirin - sorted, Gochujang paste - back of the fridge. Yet no matter what recipe I look at, there's always a new ingredient. "Wadda ya mean you ain't got no corn syrup?" and 4 supermarkets later I still haven't.
But this, this is how I use to cook. Good simple, tasty food that everyone loves.
I can do some decent Korean chicken but my daughter always asks for my Shepard's Pie.
This looks fab!
Cheryl, I made this last night and it was absolutely delicious!! we even had some leftover for tonight. Im going to make this pie over the winter as its such a warming dish. BTW its winter here at the moment.
Came for the recipe, stayed for the sweet voice and accent! :D
This looks amazing watching before eating is a bad idea 🤣
Watching before eating is bad for any of Cheryl's videos. As a person who watches in the morning before breakfast I can verify this
@@LindaC616 I know what you mean 🤣🤣
That takes me back to my school days and looks delicious. I will have to try it 😮
Looks lovely!
Thanks Cheryl, looks delicious I'll be giving this a go! x
Looks great no complications or fancy herbs..will give it a go..well done...
Yeah. First comment. I am laying in bed watching you at 4:30 in the morning.
This looks absolutely delicious.
Have a great day Cheryl. ☺
Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. Go to sleeeeeeeeeeeeeep 😉😴😴😴
@@moniquem783 I would rather watch Cheryl.
Hey so excited for this recipie !!! Am going to make it for me and my kiddies thank you xx also cant wait for the pasta recipe
Wow, this looks so delicious. I’m definitely making this! I love your video’s by the way 😀
Wow that looks delicious, definitely going to try that!! I'm so hungry now!
I’m going to make this for ma wee maw and da to cheer them up. Thanks a lot for the video, great stuff 👍🏴.
This is a go to pie for my house, made it for year's. My granny n mom when I was a little girl. We had it with some beautiful New Cheshire spuds n fresh peas.
Looks fab! Can't wait to try this one!!!!
Her voice is delightful, it's making me goofy with a big smile on my face. lol Thanks for the recipe, I may try this sometime.
Looks delicious! I am already thinking of variations to the recipe. You could make your own Sloppy Joe mix, or Taco mix and add Mexican cheese blend, or even add some pasta sauce and mozzarella cheese for an Italian version, or just add green bell peppers for a different flavor.
Ahh that takes me back!
Thank you for sharing this recipe. Made it at the weekend and it went down very well with the family, so good its been requested again.
Looks amazing and I’m gonna give it a wee whirl shortly
Thanks for sharing yum yum even bikers get hungry
That looks phenomenally tasty. I'm going to have to make this!
That's really looks tasty and savoury
God, but that looks good Cheryl! That's oor tea sorted for tonight! ❤❤😋😋😋😋
This is lovely. The filling is something that is very easy to modify with spices and use those poorly looking veg bits from the fridge and just chop it in.
Well done. That's an excellent vid with presentation of a yesteryear meal. Thanks
Looks delicious!. Gonna save this one til the depths of winter. Luverly 😋
This looks lovely and will cook it in the week. Love from Liverpool x
Great cold too with salad in the summer time. We used to call it top & bottom pie due to the two layers of pastry.
If it’s half as good as school mince pie it will be awesome
Oh this looks so good!!
Have a great time of!! See you back soon!
I’ll have to make this. Looks wonderful
That takes me back! Definitely another one of yours i'll try.Could you follow this up with school 'cheese-pie'? Don't know if it was just a London thing and i've never found out how it was made, but it was the best
I just typed “school cheese pie” into the RUclips search bar and a few different kinds of cheese pies came up. Try it and see if one is what you’re looking for so you can learn to make it!
@@moniquem783 I've tried a couple that i found online but they were more like quiche which is not what i'm looking for
@@Dunstire try looking for Greek "tyropita"
@@moniquem783 I went into Google and typed in school cheese pie and one option that came up was specifically marked UK recipie. Try that.
Thank you and well done but.... Firstly... I LIKE all of your recipes before I even watch them. 2nd ...you're terrific. ... and thirdly YUMMO!
Good Channel Lass!
I reckon your local Butcher has a special shelf 'for Sheryl!!'
Gosh I just love your voice thx for being in the world.
10 seconds in and I’m salivating ! Looks delicious.
I want to try this one day
That looks soooooo much better than the terrible, store bought frozen chicken pot pies my mom would make for us as a kid. Nothing against my mom though, lol.
Almost forgot to ask....where is your white pie tray from??? Not seen one of those before. .seems ideal for tray bakes too
Hi 👋 Maryam like you I would love to know where you can buy the the white tray pan. 👍🏴
Wow nice vlog Cheryl
Fantastic simplistic and Scrumdidilocious
Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻👍🏻
The only change I made to this recipe was to add heaps of crushed garlic to the onions...didn't change the consistency of the slice at all, just upped the flavor a notch or three. Cheers from NZ.
I have very fond memories of school dinners in Edinburgh in the 1970's. This recipe definitely makes my mouth remember those wonderful school meals, but I think I've lost my ticket Miss!
Thanks for sharing this video. Takes me right back to those days at school when food was proper and wholesome. I think I will have a go at making this today. Off to Tesco's I go today. Thanks again.
