Land Rover calls the Ranger Rover Velar the avant-garde Ranger Rover. You might just call it beautiful. Tom Voelk checks out the stylish interior and drives the 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder R-Dynamic SE model on a rainy Seattle day.

About Tom:
Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting. Авто/Мото
That center console is something else. Beautifully elegant.
The nicest looking RR ever, I think. It’s an SUV rock climber with a metropolitan ambiance. Great review as always.
Always appreciate and look forward to your reviews. Well done.
Love your reviews.
Nice video, Good job Tom!
Great review as always! Love the color on this car 👍🏻
This couldn't have been filmed anywhere but Seattle. Everything from the roads to the skies look distinctly PNW, and it makes the video look incredible. I love it!
It leaves all the other brands for dead when it comes to looks and practicality .
Seriously, who can do a better review than this??THUMPS UP Tom Voelk.
saw the Evoque 2019 has very similar design as this one, I would definitely go for Evoque due to the smaller size.
Very well made video👍🏻
great review
Great review as always There is nothing like Range Rover in terms of PRESENCE but its downside is electronics in my personal experience
i certainly miss the range rovers of yesteryear, especially the iconic late 80's/90's rovers. they weren't all too dependable, but they were a bonny lot to look at. reminds me of the pretty lads who used to take them past the M25 for the countryside. lots of rovers in bayswater/paddington/chelsea.
The best of the American reviewers.
Is Jaguar-Land Rover still not offering 4GLTE connectivity or Android Auto or Apple CarPlay in any Velar trim?
6:30 Nice old-school Ford window switches to recline the second row seats. The F-Pace has these as well. Jaguar/Land Rover must think no one will notice this.
Car manufacturers often use the same suppliers for their interior car parts. For example, there is one main company in the world that makes the electric rear boot door switches used on SUVs. Whether you have an X5 or a Discovery Sport - it is the same switch, or at least - the very same plastic. Such economies result in switches being dirty cheap for all manufacturers and supply being very very easy.
Gary J. Hmmm naaaah, that's really just old-school Ford parts bin being used in a Range Rover.
Curious use of spelling in your post. I think it is 'Hm' and nah', but perhaps you were trying to be dramatic? But, in fact, you are both wrong, the buttons are made by a Midlands UK firm not used by Ford. May look similar, but ultimately, not the same.
_Thank you_ for your time and effort in replying, however.
Haha I work at a Land Rover/Jaguar dealership. Some of the mechanical parts in the 2014+ Range Rover Sport, 2012+ Range Rover, 2016+ Discovery, and F-Pace literally have the “Ford Motor Company” engraved onto them.
Tata bought Land Rover Jaguar but all they did was making them look better. The parts are still mainly supplied by Ford.
Louis Win omg
Love the video and the car Tom. Just a quick note: "Volare" in Italian means to fly, "Amore" is love.
D'oh! True.
What an elegant piece of luxury !
I love the Velar design so much! seen many of them on thew roads and they never get old. Volare means "to Fly"
J024 volar us fly, this is VELAR. Two completely different words
Velar means "To Veil" in Latin. They used this name in 1969 to test out the first generation Range Rover on public roads and as a code name to "veil" the actual identity of the car, which they mangled to keep a secret until 1970 when the first Range Rover was unveiled.
@@CharlieDiaz12 I responded to Tom his explanation of the word Volare: 0:41 watch and listen.
@@LordTechPro You missed what i responded to see at 0:41
@@jody024 Yes I know, he pronounced it wrong
Nice framing at 4:09
Nice exterior styling on the example you were driving.
Btw, when you're in Costco do you grab a hotdog afterwards? I read the price hasn't changed since 1985!
We used to have churros at Costco take-out but sadly no more. Dang!
Every so often I do the $1.50 lunch but lately I've been splurging on the caesar salad.
Beautiful cinematography as always Tom. I do like the Velar's exterior design. The interior generally looks good as well, but I do not place much trust in those screens that control many important functions to keep on working well long-term. Some have already experienced problems with them almost brand new. They're good for the wow factor when the car is brand new but not something I'd want to own long-term.
That was my thought as well. I usually buy what I really want and keep long-term. I'd really love this or a RR Sport, but once the warranty (which is decent) expires, I'm concerned that it'll be a well-depreciated money sink. And those repairs will cost more than a domestic vehicle like a Yukon (which is what I drive now) when they inevitably occur.
My thoughts exactly!
I absolutely love the look of this vehicle. Before discovering the Velar, I had my eyes set on the F pace (no coincidence). Seems like a 36 month lease is the way to go with either vehicle.
Dream car😍
Question ? How to turn off the satellite transmission from the Velar 😁
You can get heated rear seats on the Velar, thought that seemed wrong when you said it so I double checked on the site and yep, it's there.
Yes, I said not on this particular car.
you mention the cargo capacity of the XT5, but I don't see a video in your channel
Coming soon.
0:33 Was this an intentional British reference? Ambleside Road and Windemere Road in Seattle Washington. Ambleside Road is also in the town of Windemere, L23 in northern United Kingdom.
Let's just say I don't show street signs very often...

love it
Hey, Tom! Great stuff as always! Allow me to correct you, volare means "To Fly" in Italian, while love is "Amore". Cheers!
MMYY DREAM CAR
That leather gets stained very easily i've seen in other videos
No seats heaters in the rear? I’m sure Kia offers that in their forte...
Mike C 😂😂😂
Who cares ? heated seats are unnecessary anyway. Only adds weight.
My Kia Soul has heated rear seats 😆
jody024 it’s the fact that this car cost upwards are 80k and doesn’t offer that? And heavier? Not much it would make a huge difference
You can get heated rear seats on the Velar, Tom is wrong this time.
I love that neighborhood.where is it?
Seattle
Honestly don't think the lack of rear seat heaters, will be a deal breaker for some. Yes at this price point they should be there, but given all the other things this vehicle brings to the table it can be over looked.
Plus I'm sure most Velar buyers will will be young business with professionals with 1 or no children. Plus kids don't care about that. And adults in the rear will be more wow'd by the panoramic roof, ambient lighting and the sheer fact they are being driven in a range rover.
You can get heated seats in the rear.
I love you car
Que cuesta ese coche el de p250
You entirely missed the point of the activity key "just take with with you" when swimming or rock climbing or jet skiing et cetera?
Okay, school me. What's the point of the AK other than not getting the normal key (that is bulky, not on a convenient wrist strap and easily damaged when submerged in water) lost or damaged?
"What's the point of the AK other than not getting the normal key lost or damaged"
That is the point, which you missed in the video by saying "save $500 and take the key with you". You dont want to take the key with you in manny cases.
@@bitcoinsharp-win While I did not specifically say that, saying that it waterproof kind of points that out. Perhaps I was a bit flip because I've covered it in detail before. Either way, I'll assume anyone spending this kind of money on a vehicle would be smart enough to understand the benefits.
@@DrivenCarReviews "anyone spending this kind of money on a vehicle would be smart enough to understand the benefits."
But not understand that they could "save $500 and take the key with them", ...
I'm surprised at how dated the front end looks. At 4:15 in the video, the grill looks like something off of an early 2000's Ford or something. Pretty bad. The rest looks good though.
fact check: VELAR stands for V8 Land Rover. even though Velar is not offered with a V8, it takes the badge of the original range rover concept.
Pretty spiffy looking Ford Explorer..
I'm 6'7", do you think I will be comfortable driving?
There's really only one way to find out
Yeah I know. Ima have to go check it out
@@BronxY2k2 Yup.
Thx
@@DrivenCarReviews thank you!
5:27 Press the "Land Rover" button for gods sake, is it that hard to do so? It's a cool trick, sad that 90% of RUclipsrs are too lazy to realise that the Land Rover badge is the release button
Came here looking for this comment!
@@angelherg1997 I own a Velar and immediately upon seeing that Land Rover badge for the first time I had to touch it, and surprisingly it opened up the cup holder cover. Also most of these car reviewers don't even bother to even change the infotainment brightness or theme from dark to white (or auto) and complain about the glare. Just plain lazy
Do you buy the toilet paper every time or do they loan you it and you take it back in?
I'm building a fort in my back yard
Haha I've thought the same thing. Tom's probably on Costco's watch list for returning too much toilet paper.
I like these but I think I’d stick with my eye on a 2017 RR Sport. The design is nice but I honestly think the extra black gloss black stripe that flows into the rear lower reflector lights looks really tacky and as a bit of an after thought. That, and I think all Range Rovers are overpriced. Good cars though.
KS_2015 how’s your sport been treating you, in considering a velar but worried about problems with it
Volare is Italian for love! WRONG! Volare means “to fly” in Italian, whereas Velar means “to hide” in Spanish, among other meanings.
Might as well point out that " amore " is Italian for love! :-)
Gorgeous car. Perfect...until you look at reliability. But hey that’s Land Rover
I have to say the leather stitching at 2:33 looks pretty naff.
Are talking about the back of the steering wheel? That's very very common on the best of cars.
"Volare" is "to fly."
"volere" is "to want"
You got me there.
Hehe, I have made quite a few booboos in my English as well. :)
Velare means to veil.
anche questo è corretto!
This dude picks up high school chicks in this
Range Rover underpowered the most agressive vehicle they make... FCK!
Great review but I rather get a Range Rover sport
To much tech what if an electrical failure happens
Too many wheels. What if you get a puncture?
@@evo5dave let him drive his Yaris in peace xD

The Velar is the only good looking SUV.
I'm just not sold on Land Rover, their cars seem trendy and very sophisticated should they need to be repaired.
In my opinion this is one of the most beautiful cars out right now. But their reliability is so bad, it's sad. 😧😵
Land rover buyers lease.. moot point
Zachary F. Indeed, that's only thing I concerned about this brand
You Americans keep harping on with this cliche.
Keep it simple, I couldn’t live with that interface...fashion over substance..
I don't know why but this cars exterior looks dated to me already...
There are some nice wheels available, but these rims are hiddeous!
Land Rover is just committing more and more to its atrocity of an infotainment system, instead of cleaning it up and making it snappier like BMW, Hyundai, Audi, and even Ford.
At your age, why you need lots of tissue?
JLR reliability and quality are horrendous.
But it is a Land Rover, so it will break.
Kardashiann in SUV world
The best thing about the Range Rovers is they haven't got that ugly obscene bonnet join 6 inches back from the front of the car over the radiator like the Jaguars , I would never buy a Jag because of it as you can see the misalignment as the body part comes together and three different body part joins over the headlights , ugly beyond belief and misaligned .
