  • Very few of us need a vehicle that will tackle tough off-road situations then turn around to look perfectly at home arriving at the opera house. The Land Rover Range Rover can do it with ease. Tom Voelk drives the Td6 diesel model that adds to the trail experience (though not as much to La Bohème).

    About Tom:
Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting.

Really glad to see more high end cars having smaller more efficient without a big hit to performance. Liking the hybrid land rovers more, and wish to see hybrid drive similar to the one offered on the range rover on the velar. Just sad to see that so much money and effort go into such a fantastic car, and then it cost so much no one ever uses the off road abilities. Also sad to see that flow through center console for the rear seat has gone, really like that not a fan of this new design, would be awesome to have a touch screen back there to, as this is basically what this car is used for a posh taxi.

Tom, diesel is usually priced less than mid-grade but slightly more than unleaded here in Seattle (unless you go to the wrong stations). I suspect the $2k could be made up pretty quick around here! I hit the Tukwila Costco with my Golf TDI about once a month, and it's almost always within 10 cents of unleaded (though I'm getting 45-50 mpg).

Good review sir. Story time. My friends and I laughed while on a ski trip in Utah. One of these fabulous Range Rover's could not make it to the resort. It was snowing heavily and along with the Rover many decided to forgo the climb and turn around. The 2006 Acura rl with all season tires made it just fine. The Rover did look cool though. Maybe perceived capabilities aren't all there cracked up to be? By the way found the Acura on line for $9800. It has 198,000 on it now.

Keith, that is totally up to the driver, the vehicle can handle anything thrown at it.
