    The best putting drill I know of was taught to me by my instructor Gary Pinns at Oak Brook Golf Course in Illinois. Find a flat area on the green. Flat, no breaks. So if you miss a putt it's because you missed the putt not because of a break. Take a putters length away from the hole. Put down a tee. Assuming you are an average golfer you have to make 9 out of 10 putts from that distance (I go for 10 out of 10). Say 3 feet. If you make 8, do it over again. Once you get 9 move the tee back one foot (about 4 feet) and go for 8 out of 10. Once you get 8 out of 10, place the tee another foot back (5 feet) and go for 7 out of 10. Etc. Believe me, this drill works and makes a big difference out on the course.

    • @danieldudley5852
      @danieldudley5852 2 года назад

      I do something similar but around the hole on 4 points of a compass 3 putts at each point where I try to make all 12 in a row, then I move it out one grip length and start at a different point. If I miss one then I start over (maybe this is a bit harsh on myself but it puts me under some self imposed pressure). This often gives me one straight uphill, straight downhill, one left to right, and one right to left.
      I also do one where I putt over a ball mark from 3-6 feet and try to hit the ball mark every time while going a little past. Then when i get to a hole, I picture something small on the lip (usually on the back edge) of the hole that I try to hit.

    Peter is an exceptional teacher, I am 80, but still very flexible so I can still hit it between 195 to 210 yards. My lack of distance puts a lot of pressure on my short game. Thank the work I have spent in the past it still allows me to keep it under 100. By the way I am 5’ 4” and 145 pounds and have cancer that I have fighting for the last 14 years. I started playing golf when I turned 50 and my old tennis knees quit. I had an 8.2 handicap until I reached 75 and the cancer took over. My question for you is “how can I generate more distance with my weak bodies. Thank you and I watch all your videos and love your playing tips.

    Great video, will definitely save this to have some drills for block practice in the future! I like using the gate training before/after rounds to make sure i'm getting the ball on line. I have started now to use the gate drill I saw from Tiger in a video where he puts the tees next to the ball at the start of the putt to make sure his putter face is aligned and makes contact with the middle.

    The drill I have been using the most over the last 3 or so weeks has been around the world. It drives me absolutely insane most of the time but I have made massive strides in it and the payoff out on the course has definitely shown! I really like the idea of the "chalk line" drill and the gate drill. It would be nice to get more consistency with my eye line over the ball as well as starting my putts off in that right direction. My biggest issue currently is misreading my breaks by about 2 or 3 inches and therefor just missing those really big putts. Great video though Pete! Definitely gave me lots of ideas for my next block practice!

    There is a pace drill that Spieth made popular a few years back, not sure what it is called, but I really like that one. I also like playing a game where I play a round of golf on the practice greens with a friend. Basically, you start at one whole and putt from that hole to the next. If you make it in 1 stroke that is a birdie, 2 strokes is a par and so on. Just go from hole to hole, then flip around and go back the opposite way so you get different slopes. We usually bet a beer on it. I also like the circle drill that Phil showed in his short game video years back. Out of these, I think the pace drills for sure are my favorite. The goal for me is to 2 putt every green and you can't do that if you can't control your pace.

  • @w4sntme
    @w4sntme 3 года назад

    One thing I'd like to adress regarding the gate drill is that it isn't necessary to aim at a hole after the gate. It'll take focus away from the first task, which is starting the ball through the gate. Separate the two drill, that's what I've been taught and my thoughts on this vid. Otherwise cracking content Peter!

    Pete... the drills are fantastic but I play with a few guys that can’t read a green. So line and pace are alien to them.
    Learning to read slope, camber and grain make your tips very valuable. Without the basics players will just be more consistent with their misses.
    Learning how to see the break at the start or finish of your line makes a huge difference to the starting line and outcome.
    Not easy to demonstrate but maybe some graphics to show this.
