A note on the video! Something which I noticed afterward was my tendency to “release” the club more after impact. This is something Mickleson also does around the green. Although I should have pointed it out more 👍❤️
@Tucson Jim Despite opening his body and his club face, Mickelson swings along the target line. Swinging along your open shoulder line will cause the cut that you described. He mentions that in one of his videos, but almost in passing. He will swing along his shoulder line to hit a deliberate cut, as here: ruclips.net/video/FTVvCnenx1M/видео.html
@Tucson Jim Depending on the lie, distance to green, and distance to the flag, I use either method. I prefer the hinge and hold for getting a longer run out, and if I'm three feet off the green, and the pin is six feet on the green, I'll use almost a putting stroke to get the ball to pop up and then stop quickly. I use my regular grip on everything but my putter.
@Tucson Jim Yes, I can see how when the only thing I wrote I wrote about my grip is "I use my regular grip on everything but my putter" you could get confused and think I change my grip when chipping.
I have to say Pete, this is one of the best videos you have ever produced. Great insights about short game wedge play, something everyone needs to practice, great job!!!
im gonna try his shots today when i play. ill update later with the yardage estimates of how far i bladed them over the green Edit: was a successful day, only green i missed was a play from the cart path that rolled off to the right. That was most certainly a ball i should have moved
Thank you Peter for keeping it simple! Thank you for "not" spending time on "what not to do"!!! Wanting to learn things correctly does not require wasted time on what not to do but just simply....doing what is supposed to be done! Thank you!!
I really appreciate your videos, language, and teaching style. It is very much a mechanics and FEEL style. I can FEEL what you're showing and teaching me.
Stuck in a job in China with no golf courses around. Have to make do with simulators. Can't get back to Scotland for my summer fix on the links. Thanks so much for the vids. When I watch them I feel lots of nostalgia for a day round the West at North Berwick....Keep them coming Finchy!
Phil is a master around the green. He is the reason I have a 64° in my bag (that I've gotten quite good with). I LOVE watching my friends' jaws drop when I stick a 30-50 yard sky shot onto the green from behind pretty much any obstacle.
Pete cracking vlog. Played this morning and afternoon on my club par 3 course; concentrating on shots from varied distances around the green. Worked well this morning, tweaked it by watching this again and took it back on the course this afternoon. This as saved me shots from around the green, cheers.
might just be the most effective video I've ever watched and attempted to implement. Instant and significant short game improvement after watching. Actually had a stranger ask me for short game tips after our round yesterday (watched the video yesterday morning). I sent him your way Mr. Finch.
WOW, I took this lesson to the golf course today and I have never in my life had that many nice shots around the green from different lies to a variety of pin locations, That quick tutorial about hinging the wrists . locking them and the weight distribution/ changing the lofts is pure gold. Thanks Peter for the loading of this Vid, This will definitely help any golfer wanting to cut strokes off their game.
I used to play this style of chipping and changed, went back to it today and worked brilliantly, i think the longer you play the better your feel for these this technique as its all about feel for the distance and lie, great vid peter.
Phil is such a role model to me, I’m a lefty and I play all Callaway clubs. I’m 18, but when I was younger the only thing I did at the golf course was practicing flop shots, one hop stops, etc.
Playing from a 2 in earlier years, I found my 60 degree very versatile. Now that I'm older and 'wiser' on the golf course, I use a lot more of these techniques by moving the ball around and different wedges. With the flop shot I remember David Leadbetter advising to have a very weak right hand grip to stop your hands from 'turning over'. Great video as always Peter.
Peter, I’ve had this in the bag for about 2 weeks now and I have been STRUGGLING. This video finally helped me grasp the technique and I’m actually hitting quality chips! Thanks for the help!
Thanks for this fun video. I'm a huge fan of Mickelson's go-for-broke style of play, but an even bigger fan of his brilliant short game. With every round, he'll make a shot that makes me do a double take.
I own the 64 pm grind. Love it so much. When I need to stop it quick can't beat it. Definitely looks like a dinner plate when u open it up. Love the videos!!
My short game is all Lefty inspired: Back in high school, Phil was the only lefty a lefty could follow that got any attention. So, using my only wedge, a 52* American Open low bounce, I learned to use it for just about any shot I had from a 130 yards in. Nowadays, I have a few more wedges, and yes, that includes a 64*, and love my 60* PM grind; it's absolute money from bunkers. That may be why some of my playing partners say "I hate you" after some of the shots I hit with it^^ Needless to say, but great video Pete...much enjoyed.
I have to say that I really enjoy your videos. You are genuine and it's great to see you getting excited when you succeed in what you try to teach to us watching. Keep it real, I'll be watching for as long as you make these . ps. Being a lefty myself, Mickelson has been my favourite golf player a long time..
I've used the hinge and hold technique for years. Really suits me. Never used the flop shot on the course but on the practice green it works too. Phil Mickleson The secrets of the short game is the name of the training video
I love the flop shot. If I'm on I very good at it. Been useing it since I started playing, 35 plus years. It can get tricky but is a useful shot. Thanks for showing the other shots to.
Peter excellent video as always. These shots all form an important part of the game, scoring shots. If played correctly they will cut shots of your score and bring your handicap down, which is what we all play the game for and to enjoy aswell.
This man with his humour and knowledge should have a million subscribers by now - lets see if we can do it for him..great information here Pete, look forward to getting out and trying them out, cheers
Bought Phil's book recently and I've been practicing in the back garden. Always find it hard to follow thru with the wrist angle from the hinge and hold, like you did, but I'm starting to get the hang of it.
If you search up Phil Mickelson chipping 101 its the short version of this with Phil explaining it. But Pete does a great breakdown of it and since I've been using these chipping methods for a while now I notice that chipping is so much more consistent
Thanks for the advice .I have had some success with flop, shots and will keep an eye out for a 64 degree.I never thought of a hinged wrist and will take my iPad to the driving range and rewatch tomorrow se if i can make this work.so I went to the driving range and tried the wrist already cocked and I amazing height and just 20 yards or less .I didnt have a bunker so just used my imagination thanks mate
Great stuff!! The flop is definitely the hardest to pull of and requires the most practice, but is a killer tool to have in your bag. Another great video Pete! Keep up the colorful commentary!
Requires the right lie...amazed to see that off a tight lie. Total commitment. I tried Phil’s way and really struggled because it’s so wrists. Mr Shortgame as a variation that has worked ether for me.
I learned more about chipping in your 15:07 video than ever before, this is an EXCELLENT presentation! (Liked, subscribed and smashed the bell by the way) Easy to understand, great humor ("I know it went in but I'm not happy" Hahahaa!!) excellent graphics and clearly the results I'm looking for. I cannot WAIT to get my new wedges onto the course and start trying this technique! Keep up the awesome work!
Fantastic video, really enjoyed it. The hinge and hold seems to work for a small minority of players but I've been using it for the last few months and my short game is now my most powerful asset in my game. I love short game so much now.
I actually use a 64. I bought it when I didn’t know what I was doing in golf. (I still don’t really know but I have gotten better). My friends said I should have gotten a different loft but I actually loved it.
I have to say Pete, I bought a box of those TP5 Pix balls and absolutely love them. Thanks for that tip, as well as many others! You're raising my game, man.
I've got those exact wedges... the 60 and 64. Although I usually only use the 64 degree 3 or 4 times a round. Greenside only but my God can you get that to go way up and drop on a dime! Also great from bunkers with a steep lip. Great video Pete!
This is such a great video. Thank you for the lesson. The short game is so important, learning new tricks will improve ones game far more than anything else in golf. Again, thank you Peter.
Loving the little bump and runs around the green myself. Ever so slightly getting better...and Ibhavejt started playing that long. Shot a 62 today around a par 3 course, which is laughable still, but it's my best round yet and all these little things are making the biggest difference. Birdied a few holes as well was delighted. Love the videos man big helps 😁
This is fantastic. My chipping is the least consistent part of my game cos other than doing a flop shot and putting with a 7 iron i don't really know what to do! I have a PW, 52, 58 and 64 degree wedge because my club course is so hilly and the flop shot is really helpful! This video should really help!
Good stuff Pete. I was using PMs hinge and hold technique a few seasons ago and had a decent short game, then went back to the more traditional method, not hinging the wrists, and it kinda fell apart. I´ve a comp tomorrow so this comes as a timely reminder to go practice this again. Cheers!
I found the exact same thing. I've had the chipping yips for over a year, with an involuntary jerk of my right hand through impact, which I found impossible to control. I was seriously considering giving up the game. With Phil's hinge and hold, the right hand is basically out of play, because it just stays hinged. Unbelievable difference now, and I would recommend it to anyone suffering from the same affliction.
Great video Pete. And really good results from you on these shots. Tbh, I haven't had a whole lot of success with hinge and hold because of how steep it is and because for me success seems to equate to keeping my wrists free of tension through impact. As soon as I try to control that wrist angle I tend to stick it in the ground. Even so, I'm going to cherry pick some of these ideas and see what happens!
A note on the video!
Something which I noticed afterward was my tendency to “release” the club more after impact. This is something Mickleson also does around the green. Although I should have pointed it out more 👍❤️
I was going to mention that, particularly on the third ball of your second set (up the hill). ;)
You forgot the BackWords shot

As he just won a pga championship today I found this video congratulations Phil
Not to mention Pete just won a championship too
Peter you're the man! GM Goff is calling you and Rick out for a match! Please make it happen! It's what we need!
Gm golf sucks though
@@josephhall2748 Garrett is alright but Micah can play a little bit
Wym they suck?😂 Rick couldn’t compete with either Micah or garret
@@michaelthigpen7409 Micah would be a good match. Garrett, Rick and Pete can beat no problem

Not even joking this is the best short game instructional video on RUclips. Great job Peter this will help sooo many golfers!

Peter finch, a genuinely good human being. Love you bro

Phil is such a role model to me, I’m a lefty and I play all Callaway clubs. I’m 18, but when I was younger the only thing I did at the golf course was practicing flop shots, one hop stops, etc.

Phil is my short game hero. I'm love his short and to the point videos. Also being a south paw I do not have to try and “convert “ for being a lefty.
One of the best wedge instruction videos in a long time, well done Pete
This is definitely my favourite Peter Finch coaching video so far!

Recreating Phil's instructional short game doc, but in HD for a righty. Goes to show that good instruction doesn't need to change. Great vid Pete!
Watched Phil's video during lockdown and taught myself the hinge and hold method in the back garden :D

Excellent video, Peter. I really enjoy how you describe how and why you are performing the different ways to play the shots. Cheers!
Very high skills demonstrated Pete.
Excellent video and Micklesons technique! I will have to rewatch this a bunch and maybe play it back while on the course.
Might have to watch this a few times to remember everything!! I've seen a video of his before and learned how to hit my lob wedge on the short shots
I've used the hinge and hold technique for years. Really suits me. Never used the flop shot on the course but on the practice green it works too.

In my opinion it is the best training video you have made and I have been following you for years🏌🏼♂️😃 keep it up Pete💪🏼
Thanks Pete. Gunna try some of this next weekend on my new pitch an putt membership 👍

Thanks for the lesson coach, going to go out this week and practice as well as watch the video a couple more times 😉

Great video & thanks for the tip. I've got to try the hinge & hold technique.
Opening the club in the rough is a learning. Will try it next time in the second cut.
Very good coaching Mr Finch

Glad you posted this, Lately I've been trying to channel that Phil energy around the greens, but I've just been "hitting bombs" over them instead.

Was trying the Jason Day dead arm. Was working quite well but not workable for flopping. Keen to try this out when we get out of lockdown!

looking forward to practicing these techniques in a short game session and seeing how they work.
Your Best video yet!.. really informative!..
Great video this is one of my favorite videos uv done
The last few rounds I've really had the chipping yips. I tried the hinge and hold today to try and come in a little steeper. Worked wonders!!
This was a creative video and I enjoyed it.
Great video Pete! Impressively you didn't have to show Phil - your chipping was just as good.
Great video Pete. And really good results from you on these shots.

3rd time i have watched this. I think this technique works better for me than the deadhands, one piece swing.
Great video! Gonna work on this right away!
Pete , what an awesome video ... love the pm grind 😉🏌️♂️⛳️🍻
Nice Video Pete. Very informative.
nice video Peter, good tips with a little bit of humour
another great video from the Finch locker :-)
Thanks Pete 👍 always inspiring... bring on the next game 💪
Brilliant Video. Very informative.
