😲 I have watched a lot of videos on chipping. Keep arms straight, use a putting motion, keep your wrist quiet... Then I watched this video and it was like an epiphany. I grabbed my sand wedge and headed to the course and practiced from 50 yards in. From the first swing onward, boom dead on, hitting from the fairway, the rough, and over obstacles. Distance control was pretty easy, good height, ball stopped on a dime. None of that was working for me before.
This is a fantastic video. Clear concise verbal explanation with the minimal of words. Most importantly are the sweet strokes of Mikelson repeated over and over and over to etch in the student's fragile eggshell brain. So many videos start with a lengthy explanatoin about how "not" to do it before finally getting to the fix. Phil just cuts to the chase. Love this guy!!!

Most people don't realise that Mickelson golf years was dominated by Tiger Woods. He's been runner-up in Majors a staggering 15 times. He is a phenomenon in golf.
Yup. The best of the elite in other sports are guilty of this as well. Jordan did it to Ewing and the Knicks, Isaiah Thomas and the Pistons. History would be a lot different without them. And Phil would likely have more wins and majors under his belt.
@@Thisizmyname the Bad Boys beat MJ's Bulls three times in the playoffs before finally losing in their fourth playoff match up. MJ hardly dominated Isaiah's Pistons. A better example would be Stockton/Malone's Jazz.

Lead us to the promised land Phil! Your lessons are easy to follow, relevant and from the master of short game! Always watch, they always help me improve!
the one thing about Phil's swing (and all good players) is how consistent, simple and repeatable it is. The reason he can still contend into his 50's is that he hasn't destroyed his knees and back putting too much pressure on his body. Still love this guy.
Watched this years ago and it basically created the best chipping foundation you can get , my wedge play is a bit different now but even though i have a wide variety of shots the basics of my swing do not alter , this is probably the best lesson from this , keep it simple , speed and face will create the differences you need .
I've learned the key to short game shots really is confidence. Because you need confidence to accelerate through the ball and impart the spin necessary to get the ball to check. Most bad short game shots are a result of chickening out as you start your downswing.
Chipping around the greens is the hardest part of Golf! Hit it fat, thin thru the green we have all done it! This is the way to go, But NO tension soft hands and arms! Phil is the Master Chipper!

Phil’s pitching and chipping techniques work great. For me I have to swing following the angle my open stance and keeping myself behind the ball. Not leaning ahead of the ball. Thanks Phil!
I've been doing this since last year. Amazing! Since I have really bad drives, I get the privlege of chipping most holes. This is the trick! Thanks Phil.
Awesome Aaron. Part 2, 3, and 4 are up now. Sounds like you are ready to start mastering part 3 (chipping softly around the green). Links are in the description. Thanks for watching and commenting Sir.
Just watched this yesterday and I have to say Thank You Phil! I’m a pretty good golfer and I basically know what he was teaching BUT early on in the video he clarifies what he means by “holding the hinge in his wrists” - the hinge being maintained by accelerating the hands vs “holding” the hinge with his wrist muscles. This totally clicked with me. Easy to practice and execute (for me). Took it to the course yesterday and was a chipping/pitching genius! All credit to this tip.
Weight forward, cock wrist forward slightly, TWIST not sway, keep hands in front of ball at impact. Done. Ball on front foot to pop it up..ball on back foot to bump and run. This is exactly what I was looking for. I shaved ten strokes off my game today. Thanks Phil!
He is absolutely brilliant with his mindset of hinge and hold but if you notice the other natural force he uses to maximize effect is gravity itself and understanding the club is heavier at the bottom end so naturally will want to swing itself- If you can match your technique with gravitational pull- your chipping contacts will greatly improve
Excellent instructional video. Never decelerate into the ball, always accelerate into the ball to ensure a proper strike. The loft of the wedge will do the rest. If the amount of backswing taken is correct, the ball should then reach the desired yardage. Shorten the backswing slightly if playing on faster greens, as deemed appropriate.
Yup, been using it for a couple of years and it works. Also saw a short video with Roger Cleveland and he was talking about using the bounce of a wedge ti slide the club under the ball.
This lesson and hinge and hold does help me. One issue I have with it though is the variability of the hinge. So if you hinge a lot and carry a 56 degree through you are now using a 50 degree, but hinge slightly less and now a 54 degree. That and ball position I’d think would cause a bit of variance that might make an amateur question where that ball is going to land. But when I’m tense, yippy, I say hinge and hold and think about how hard and it often really gets me out of trouble. Thanks Phil
Makes it look so easy chipping with a 60 degree wedge. That club won't come out my bag unless I'm in a sand trap. A PW or 9 Iron is the only club I can chip with and have consistency.
@@cloubriel83 Hitting in square while chipping, I've practice with it on the rough just outside the green and have had it shoot off to the right and thinned it a number of times. Fantastic club in a bunker just outside the green. My go to to flop it onto the green with a hard swing. if I'm in deep grass just outside the green and need to go about 10 yards to the flag highest I'll pull out is a 56. Probably even go with a gap wedge. A 60 degree wedge you have to make perfect contact or you don't know where the ball is flying off to.
Well, you shouldn't really chip with a 60 degree wedge unless you need to fly the ball most of the way to the hole. I mean, it would need to be a specific scenario in which you need a high, soft shot. There's very little bounce on a 60, so it's very easy to duff and/or get way under the ball (leading to a little pop up out of longer grass that goes nowhere).
I have watched videos explaining why this doesn't work, but those videos severely exaggerate the holding of the hinge. Phil doesn't hold the hinge, he just doesn't let the club face pass the hands through the ball. Anything beyond a pitch...this is the only method that works for me, and it does in fact allow me to use the bounce.
You are correct Sir. His lead arm and club are in a straight line at the finish. If he held his wrist hinge that "finish" would be impossible to achieve.
I agree! Someone, a hater, is always trying to discount Phil's play. They show why it doesn't work; well they do not do it like Phil. Golfers that cannot make this shot have no idea where the bottom of their swing arc is. I have used this method for quite a while now and I love it. Very easy to judge distance. Also really like Phil's relaxed way of teaching. Phil doesn't talk about how many way's armatures screw up a golf shot for 15 minutes before he shows what he is teaching. I do not need to know 30 different ways that am's mess up a shot, just show me the friggin shot! Teach like Phil, cut to the chase!
yup, players that cannot make this technique work are not using the bounce. They say they dig.....well, that means you are coming in too steep and not letting the club flatten out at the bottom of the arc. Brush.....don't dig!
your lead hand because you use it to sweep across the ball. Power hand is there to pull the lead hand into the correct position for releasing into the sweep
After break hinge, keep it by lead arm and forearm, and control the elbow of forearm to push it straight through at the impact position. Remember to make the drill constant, the lead arm must straight at set up and keep straight during the drill back and forth. To avoid mistake, reamer the palm is always ahead the grip toward to the target driection.
People just need to practice and experiment more by themselves. I discovered this same technique on my own because I also break wrist right away always and then I experimented with holding it. The only problem is there are no true short game practice areas from what I can tell(I am new golfer). Every range I went to has only small chipping area. Luckily I go to this one small par 3 course that used to have range but now only short game area and I can practice all the way up to 100 yards shots on it. I have been there dozen times now and I am only one using it everytime which tells me people really dont practice pitching and long chipping. I am not complaining though since I get to be there for hours all by myself😊
Nice! I have a similar short game area at my range (75 and 50 yards). Nobody is ever on it and I'm def not complaining either :) How is your bunker play? I would watch Phil Micklelsons bunker lesson videos if you haven't yet (must watch if you hinge and hold). Go to Phil Mickelsons playlist on this channel and scroll down untill you see "The bunker part 1". Long ashes to ya Sir.
I may be wrong but it appears that Phil’s wedge and putter are cut down. I was taught the closer the hands to the ball the more feel which is paramount for distance control.
Phil, the club may be square, I assume he means square to the target line or perhaps an intermediate target, but your body alignment is open to the target line and/or the hole.?
that's correct, on chips your body will be open to the target while your club face is square to the target, because your feet are closer together. This helps you follow through properly
Phil might be the best ever between 100 and 180 yards. Then again he’s great at everything else too. I would write one of his only weaknesses: perhaps too much risk taking at times. I think he’s called “Phil the Thrill” after all.
Yep this swing is great for 75 yarders and in personally. My question is at what distances do you start going full with more release of the wrists/club? For example a 100 yarder can be a full 54 for me or I also like using like an 80% pitch wedge. But should I still hinge and hold for an 80% P wedge?
Well if you want the ball flight low and the ball to release and run on the green to a back pin then hinge and hold that 80% pw. If you want the ball to stop on a dime on the green then do your full 54. It all depends on what you want the ball to do.
No, they chip with anything from a open 60 to a 9 iron. It just depends on the shot. If they have alot of green to work with and they want the ball to run and release they could chip with a lower lofted club, like a 52 degree gap wedge for example. If they want the ball to land softer and stop quicker then a 60 degree would be used. Phil goes over all this in How to chip part 3. Go to Phil Mickelson's playlist on this channel and scroll down to find all of the chipping lessons from Phil.
The most important thing he said is DO NOT DECELERATE! I believe he said just accelerate through but if u simply have don't decelerate in your brain your chips, pitches, putts, and full swing will be better. Period.
His wrist breaking, is that caused by the rotation of the wrist via his forearm? It looks like it. He goes very quickly from logo glove facing target to logo facing target line.
No just a hinge. Just Like in a full swing. Try this: If you swing right handed, stick your left hand out like your going to shake someones hand. Then hinge your wrist so the thumb is pointing to your left shoulder (keeping the back of your hand inline with the back of the forearm). This would be the ideal wrist hinge.
@@therealgolfsecrets Then there is just one option left, he rotates his humerus or his upperarm, something rotates to show the logo on his left hand. The thumb can be hinged a tiny bit upwards.
In his pomp, Phil had an amazing short game. Imagination and execution of the shot were fantastic. Can’t say for sure he was the best ever, but surely among the top 3 or 5. (Seve, Tiger have to be in the mix. Jack Nicklaus must have been brilliant to win that much?)
1:49 No, the club and arm are not traveling at the same speed, Phil. Not when the speed is angular like this; it's like the radius of a circle moving or the swinging of a pendulum; the end point, the club face, has to cover more distance over the same period of time, a longer arc, so it must travel faster by definition; physics.
Obviously, the clubhead is traveling faster than the arms before impact, because if a 90 degree hinge were kept through impact, one would completely miss above the ball and the lead arm and club shaft wouldn't be in a straight line at impact... He is explaining a feeling.
😲 I have watched a lot of videos on chipping. Keep arms straight, use a putting motion, keep your wrist quiet... Then I watched this video and it was like an epiphany. Phil might be the best ever between 100 and 180 yards. Then again he’s great at everything else too. I would write one of his only weaknesses: perhaps too much risk taking at times. I think he’s called “Phil the Thrill” after all.
you can see why he had a chance to win the masters even at his age now!
Do the pros tend to use the same wedge for all their chip shots around the greens? I have three wedges and sometimes i start confusing myself.
Even Tiger envies Phil's short game.

Absolute legend!!!!
No, he hinges his wrists to result in minimal shaft rotation.
@@amfohr Don't forget about the shoulders turning. Watch Phils shoulders.
In his pomp, Phil had an amazing short game. Imagination and execution of the shot were fantastic. Can’t say for sure he was the best ever, but surely among the top 3 or 5. (Seve, Tiger have to be in the mix. Jack Nicklaus must have been brilliant to win that much?)
woods did not have the short game Phil has. Woods didn't even have the short game that John Daley has.
Phil has every shot
Can you show me again?
Yeah they pasted the same footage
@@amfohr Can you say that again?

Heavens no.
Bravo Mickhelson ...🎉🎉🎉
Been trying this and it works.
Thanks Phii, but how do we obtain your pure unadulterated talent?
Get to work! Don't be a spectator! Talent is one thing...work is quite another. Good luck!
@@donbudge6706 I was asking Phil, but thanks for your input little buddy 👍
@@zaproodas9626 Yeah man! I just watched it and reading the replies. I was triggered by your comment!

@@therealgolfsecrets "He is explaining a feeling"? That sounds like DEI hogwash. You didn't get the memo? -The facts don't care about your feelings.
The same angular speed!
@@alanv3575 At what point on the moment arm for both the clubhead and the hand, though, silly?
How should you grip the club? The same as you would with any other shot?
Yes, same as a full shot. Go to our shorts videos. Watch all the grip videos with Tom Watson. They are a game changer.
