Driver Ball Position Mistake That Nobody Tells You!

  • The subject of Ball Position in golf doesn't get much attention, but it plays a significant role in how you deliver the club to the ball and the resulting shot that you hit.
    Ball position should not be set in stone. Instead, ball position is a variable and should be used to manage your swing path and intended shot shape which we can do with the Stack & Tilt GRID system which I explain in more detail here.
    The biggest mistake made with Ball Position happens with the Driver and comes about because people are incorrectly using the FEET as the reference point for measuring their ball position. The correct place to measure the Ball Position from is the lead shoulder, as this is the centre of the swing.
    In this video, I'll demonstrate this common error and show you how to measure the Ball Position correctly to help you improve the quality and consistency of all your shots and show you how to DRAW and FADE the ball at will.
    If you'd like to learn more about Stack&Tilt, you can visit the website here - stackandtilt.com/

      I’ve heard in front of your lead armpit. One ball position. Your trail foot gets closer your lead foot as the clubs get shorter, but the ball doesn’t move relative to the lead armpit.

    I’ve never heard anyone break this down how you have. Pretty much every PGA Pro I’ve had lessons from, say to lean back to add more distance and power when you use driver. I won’t be doing that ever again! And no more foot reference setup. Had no ideal that it’s the front shoulder that is the center of the entire swing! Incredible, thank you sir! I subscribed just now!🫡

    I often make the mistake of watching RUclips videos and then heading out to play. I watched this video last night and let it sink in. I hit a few balls at the range before went out and played and noticed a difference. Then went out and shot the best nine holes of my life. I think this tip is a game changer.

    • @EricScottGoldstein
      @EricScottGoldstein 3 дня назад

      A follow-up thought to this as well..
      The whole issue of Axis Tilt has always aggravated me. It's never worked to try and drop my left shoulder and always created issues with hitting the ball "fat or thin".
      If I keep my left shoulder as the "radius of the circle" and keep my left shoulder in line with the ball (vs. shifting to the right), I believe I was hitting the ball WITH axis tilt much more accurately and straighter.
      I need to get out again and see if it was a fluke (as golf can often do to you), but again - best score of my life today - 10 pars in a row, almost every single GIR (or just 5-10 feet off the green), no lost balls, etc.

    I can't wait to try this. I have had a difficult time drawing the driver and I've always placed the ball just inside my left toe and so as not to get my body out in front of the ball and club head, I would lean my head back behind the ball.
    These "pointers" were picked up by other "instructors" and now I know why it has been almost impossible for me to draw the driver.
    Essentially the ball has been too far forward and despite trying to swing inside out, I still was swinging outside in and coming over the top.
    Small changes such as this can give big results. Can't wait to try it soon.

The longer the club the more it fades / slices, and no matter what I try with my wrists I keep hitting booming slices or hooks and my best drives are fades. Hi Rob -- super video. I think it rivals (at least for me) the swing hard/stop fast, which I thought was the best ever. That said, I already took today's thought to the range and noticed my first few swings had the feeling of too much right hand trying to find the low spot. However, after about five swings, I felt a much more 'left arm' -- I'm thinking that's way better -- swing and really better low point and strike. From here: how about a more in-depth video on aim? Not so much alignment, but 'aim,' as I tend to either get my shoulders more open or closed with this new positioning. Again, great video -- Tom in Texas

    Hi Rob, thanks for the video, and the online lesson! I have a question about this topic. Placing the ball further ahead would promote a more out to in swing path on the arc as you have mentioned but it would also give more time for the club face to close. As per Adam Young the club face direction has a greater impact on ball flight direction than the path so how do you reconcile increased fades by putting the ball forward with a more closed face? Thanks!

  • @michaelking6144
    @michaelking6144 13 часов назад

    When referencing your own swing, you draw the line down from the very INSIDE of you shoulder. When setting up for a fade, you say the ball is well forward - it is more like the outside of your shoulder. But then you show Rory, seemingly to back up your theory, but the line to the ball is on the outside of Rory's shoulder, a position you are arguing leads to a natural fade, which is not what Rory is setting up for. On the whole I am unconvinced, but nevertheless will give it a try next time I hit the range, especially since so many commenters had good results. I'm also curious about your foot alignment - seems closed / well right of target and I wonder how that interacts with your ball position. I do wonder if maybe this is good advice for high handicappers but not helpful for people who already understand the swing pretty well.

    Thanks Rob. so position the ball opposite the heel; the amount of body lean back determines position of ball, relative to shoulder, at IMPACT? If I want a positive angle of attack, say 5 degrees, and lean back, will that not put ball ahead of shoulder and lead to a slice? what if I want a positive angle of attack draw? Thanks for the video, I subscribed and liked.

    I understand how this may work better, but even when you had the ball at your lead shoulder, the line to the ball from your left foot was still at your left heal.

    I see you repositioning your angle of tilt with driver - not necessarily where you position the ball - am I missing something?

    I’ve tried all of this and I still draw/hook the ball. I’ve tried opening the face wide open and hitting down on the driver and it still draws. The further forward I put it the more it pull hooks. The further back- the more it snap hooks

      The face must still be closing as you swing to produce the shots you’re describing.
