Chris, went out today and played 9 holes. Didn’t miss a fairway probably 15-20 yr increase in distance. Been playing and fighting swinging over the top for 40 yrs. BEST lesson in history.
I'm in the same category as the rest, over the top, poor contact on heel and toe with wipe outs far right or hard, straight left with the driver. Perfect explanation and instruction for practice drills to get the feels. This is definitely the best explanation of how most amateur golfers hit the driver. We have it backwards in the downswing. I saw another instructor talking about the same thing the other day, but most do not tell it like you have. Thanks Chris
Tried this recommendation on the course today. I 4:16 hit the ball farther and straighter than I have in years!! Was not embarrassed by my distance today, and I kept it in the fairway. Thank you for this video!
Thank you Chris! Your explanation was spot on to what I have been doing, similarly to your BIL, hitting that fade to slice shot off the tee. This video along with the one on how to hit with more power (putting weight/getting "heavier" on the front leg and exploding up) has made a huge difference in my distance and confidence. It amazes me how it sometimes takes a different voice to see and understand and your point of view and explanation resonnated very well for me and my understanding of the swing. I have been playing on and off (good and bad) for over 34 years and your explanation finally made sense - I had been told to keep my back to the target longer before, but not explained why and the effects it has on the swing. Thank you!
Well here is an update. I used you drills that over emphasize rolling of the wrists and keeping my back to the target as I start my backswing. Now this is only at the range today, but the difference was simply remarkable! Not only did my irons and metals go straighter with some a slight draw, but the biggest takeaway for me was more consistently good contact! I am playing later this week, and am so encouraged! Thanks again Chris for giving me simple and uncomplicated drills to improve my game.
The demonstration of how the arms move relative to the torso is so important for new golfers to understand. In terms of sequencing, using that arm movement with the feeling of bottoming out the club 1-1½' behind the ball, forces me to; initiate the downswing with my lower body, encourages more open hips at impact, and get the club down early. One of your best videos yet Chris, gj!
Great lesson as always Chris. My son is 14 and just made the high school golf team. He's been watching a bunch of your videos, however he's not been working on these specific drills which I believe are key to understanding how important technique is in this game.
I am playing Riviera CC in LA in early October and plan on practice and playing the next few weeks intently. I'll give this a try and report back. Good vid!
The motion this man is trying to explain is what was holding my swing back for many many years. I was a perpetual slicer for turning my body way too early, trying muscle through the shot. finally I figured out you almost feel like you are not turning and whip/snap the club at the ball then let the club carry your body around after impact.
I did the drill at 4 minutes with my irons and I could not believe how pure we're my contacts and the greater the distances!! Great stuff again Chris!!
i have seen you mention this concept in a couple of videos now, and whilst I cant say i have perfected it I have noticed through recording myself that this is exactly my biggest issue and one that seems to be missed by other golf instructors. It makes perfect sense to my tiny brain and when i get it right I can see it helps cure a number of issues such as a small chicken wing after impact, hands not really ahead of the ball at impact and my right elbow being closer to my right side during the downswing/turn. Seems a logical idea when i see it explained and I am lost why i havent seen anyone else mention this. Thanks for the videos!
Another great lesson. I think a lot of amateurs have been mislead by the notion that the big muscles of the legs and back do all the work, and the arms are passive. Watch any professional golfer hitting drivers in slow motion and you will see where the speed and power come from.
I think it’s been studied like 70% of all the speed and power comes from the arms and wrists in the swing which makes sense because of how fast you can throw them vs your rotation 😊
I wish you could break down the video in segments for each drill explained so I can take the video to three driving range and practice exactly everything drill. What I mean ideas when I'm at the driving range, or even in my backyard, I could click on your video by the teaching segments & the drill segments. Thanks so very much for this video. I am 72 and have always had this same problem you so distinctly explained but until today watching this video I have never ever been told what you have said. I've just been tooled I'm swinging too much outside to in but no matter how hard I tried to change that I never could. I'm excited to go try your drills. Thanks Soo very much!!!!!!!
This made a lot of sense and is simple to grasp. I’ll be practicing this down the range. I hit irons well with lag. This doesn’t work for driver. Many Thanks
This has to be the absolute best drill I have came across. Warmed up with this drill before my round and didn’t hit the ball to the right/slice off the tee all round! Thank you awesome video.
Great video, I usually hit a fade but recently I’ve been hitting a few slices per round. This lesson has helped to fix it. I still play a baby fade but making sure that my arms start the downswing earlier has helped to fix the slice. I’ve also widened my driver swing stance by a few inches which helps with stability.
I just got off the course a few hours ago and I KNOW I am still swinging a little out to in. I make adjustments to combat this, however I will take your drills to the range tomorrow to work on this stubborn part of my game! Thanks as always for the best video golf instruction out there.
Just call me Lee. Thank you so much for this instruction, I've been struggling with putting this all together with my driver. My wife told me yesterday I need to figure out how to get my arms down sooner in the downswing, can't wait to try this out.
Thanks Chris, this was exactly what I needed. Ive been trying to get away from OTT with driver and I'd always felt that somehow I just don't get the club head square in time for impact. I just decided to dump the driver for a 4 wood. I look at the ball on a driver tee and my mind just says hey you're never going to hit that ball cleanly, and I don't. I've worked out lately that my ground shots are all better than any tee shots, I understand the hitting up on the ball with driver but I'm scared of it. I've picked up a 4 wood and will try and use it on a short tee, to see if I can get some confidence back... Then I'll give your advice a go.... .👍
this is probably why the sergio garcia / bryson feel of actively pulling the arms down into the slot as a first move in the downswing has helped me so much. i got so caught up in sequencing feels, focusing on not firing my hands and letting my body whip it through, that i ended up with the same issue you mentioned in the video, where i came in super steep despite feeling like i was making good hip and chest rotation. my hands were lagging too far behind and never shallowed out into the slot, but rather came over the top to catch up. ive always know the explanation you made about how the arms move up in relation to the chest through the backswing, but never thought to connect that same logic as arms moving back to the downswing. then it just completely clicked for me what was going on with my swing. just goes to show you that feel is different for everyone!
Amist all the hyperbole, this is one tip that has transformed my ball striking! Tried it on the range then golf course today. First time I have ever felt like I had room to swing from the inside. Thanks Chris.
This reallllly helped me out Chris Ryan. Your explanation makes so much sense. Such a common fault , and yet haven’t seen much about this particular issue. Not trying to oversell it here, but I was making such solid contact and hitting so straight in my 9 hole league after work. Thank you again!
I think this is what i need to incorporate in my swing. I recently, and suddenly, started skying drives like to an absurd degree and couldn't figure out why. After seeing your video I suspect too much body and too little arms moved my low point to right where the ball is sitting on the tee rather than bottoming out earlier in downswing. I'll have to give this a go and see if it helps, thank you.
Excellent, your clarity and focus for improvement on specific issues has become increasingly spot on. Very impressed and helpful 😊 This was terrific…Got some hack motion concepts embedded in these moves👍
After 35 years of chasing the 'correct' swing, I decided to give up and just swat it away with my arms. I noticed that I did this out of fairway bunkers and hit the ball really well, with no leg action, so I thought 'just do it on all shots'. Its an embarrassing looking 'swing' but I am now straighter than I've ever been, without a noticeable loss of distance. Shot 76 the other day, 7 shots better than my handicap. I didn't consciously do any of that forearm rotation though, how on earth would you time it right every time?
Thank you for giving us a simple swing thought. My playing partners consider me the fairway finder without much distance, I would gladly give up some accuracy for 40 or 50 yards.
This is perfect Chris, same swing thought applies for iron shots as well? I struggle with the longer irons because of my steep over the top swing. Thank you!
Too many amateur golfers are obsessed with the word “ turn “ that one word causes so many problems- you have to get your arms ( and club ) into a position where you can deliver the club effectively through the ball - before your body opens up - or turns !! This video highlights the role of the arms - before the body takes over
Another great lesson Chris, thank you. I would have thought a BIL of a brilliant coach like you had a single figure HC, I guess you don’t get on too well otherwise you would have told him this a long time ago 😂😂😂. Keep up the great work
For me the best thought is to work arms right and keep hands painting my plane. Then the body just naturally does the right thing trusting myself to be athletic. But it also helped to hear arms are passive because my other misses were me moving all hands and clubhead. Really hard swing and when I do this you only hear club head cut thru wind. When I swing correct I hear my shaft cutting thru wind more then club head . if this makes sense. Also I couldn't feel any flex in shaft unless I'm swinging correctly from inside out not over top
The great and interesting thing about the sequence being described here is that applies whether your swing plane is flatter and rotation driven or you are more vertical with more arm swing. The delay of the shoulder rotation moves the shaft plane below the shoulder plane for the former and gets the hands and arms moving down in front of the body for the latter, all with the bonus of getting the lower body moving first. It's actually unfair to call this a "tip," in reality it's an essential for all swings.
I actually practice this swing " feeling " of dropping my driver behind me during my driver tee shots and it has helped me reduce my big slices.....however , whenever I try to gain some extra distance and swing my driver a bit faster, my slice comes right back...any suggestions?....thanks
Great video, I predict a lot of light bulbs turning on. When fine-tuning forearm rotation, which arm do you recommend should dominate those tweaks? lead or trail?
I would say the only true great ball striker that dropped his hands straight down from the top or even back from the top, is Sergio Garcia. I played College golf and some pro tournaments as an amateur, and I listened at one time to instructors who said dropping the hands straight down, and it actually steepened my shaft plane too much on downswing, with too many shots on toe.
You can, and would definitely get the arms moving more down but can get you a little stuck with the body through impact, so it’s an option but personally I prefer this method for most
I basically know the order of the correct movement but the downswing takes just one second at all so its so damn hard to get the timing right, shot for shot. Even if I get the timing right I may hit slices because I am not able to close the clubface correctly. Still struggling with turning the forearms or just twisting the club shaft. I often notice that my right arm doesn't overtake my left arm after impact so it feels more like a pull which goes off way to the right.
Total beginner here: is this also true for irons? I mean, from what I studied so far your hands are in front of the ball with irons, which is the major difference. Is this feel and arm swing you are describing still the same?
Does your lead elbow point towards the target at set up by rotating it clockwise, or does it point down by rotating it anti-clockwise? I read, hear and see so many different opinions on this lead elbow set up (I'm a right-handed player)
If you film your swing from behind you’ll see right away if you rotate your body before moving your arms bc the club head will take a weird turn before coming down
I’ve got myself down from 14 to 11 this season but I’m still loosing 7-8 strokes a round off the tee , all my other game is in a good place , I stand on tee with driver and can only guess where it’s going to go My club pro gave me a lesson and was basically saying the same thing as you get the hands dropped down faster and less body rotation I’m getting there but getting the occasional big duck hook which he said would happen so now it’s just trying to neutralise it
i heard you say, if i gave him that only he'd be worse off. but I'm not sure what you changed after that... could you explain? also, does this apply to irons also?
I explained this at the end of the video, I had to change his ball position too once his swing shape had changed, the club was bottoming out somewhere else so we had to move the ball back to make everything fit together Also does apply to irons yes
I don't even think about my arms. I turn them off and use my legs as the first move down and the arms are the last thing to go down. Having to think about the arms ruins my golf swing.
Chris, went out today and played 9 holes. Didn’t miss a fairway probably 15-20 yr increase in distance. Been playing and fighting swinging over the top for 40 yrs.

I need to go to the driving range and door three same drills. I have the same problem.
You described my drives to a tee...either big slices or 20 yards off the heel into the rubbish! I can't wait to try this at the range.

That's a really good explanation of finding the slot. Works every time!
Struggled with huge slices for years. Watched this video and immediately started hitting straight drives and shot one of the best rounds of my life.
I tried this tip today and what a difference. Straight drives, longer shots all around. Thanks Chris!

100% believing that the arms are passive is something I’ve heard a lot, and definitely holding a lot of golfers back imo
So true, body certainly helps but speed comes from hands and arms first 🙌
@@ChrisRyanGolfpodraig Harrington did a video saying most speed comes from the arms and hands, ignore the people on RUclips that say arms are passive.

Yes that shot can definitely happen, too steep at impact and you can start popping them up as you describe, this should really help
Great tip. The auld 'feet together' drill also promotes this kind of movement... 👍

The great and interesting thing about the sequence being described here is that applies whether your swing plane is flatter and rotation driven or you are more vertical with more arm swing. When fine-tuning forearm rotation, which arm do you recommend should dominate those tweaks? lead or trail?
I think that’s going to be personal to everyone, a little trial and error and you should find one has better results
Excellent!

Some the best ball strikers in history, had there hands moving out towards the ball on the downswing. Like Ben Hogan, Sam Snead.
Agreed, I’d go as far as saying almost all great golfers have their heads moving out towards the ball
@@ChrisRyanGolf Yes I agree with that, but I just provided 2 of the best.
@@ChrisRyanGolf I am sure you meant hands instead of heads, or maybe you didn’t?
Thanks for the lesson Chris....can we drop the arms down with early side bend instead?
You can, and would definitely get the arms moving more down but can get you a little stuck with the body through impact, so it’s an option but personally I prefer this method for most
I basically know the order of the correct movement but the downswing takes just one second at all so its so damn hard to get the timing right, shot for shot. Even if I get the timing right I may hit slices because I am not able to close the clubface correctly. Still struggling with turning the forearms or just twisting the club shaft. Total beginner here: is this also true for irons? I mean, from what I studied so far your hands are in front of the ball with irons, which is the major difference. Is this feel and arm swing you are describing still the same?
Vertical drop, horizontal tug!
Exactly!
Thought someone would have given you credit @steveroper194 by now. By that was a great Curb episode.!😂
Does your lead elbow point towards the target at set up by rotating it clockwise, or does it point down by rotating it anti-clockwise? I read, hear and see so many different opinions on this lead elbow set up (I'm a right-handed player)
Personally I’d say somewhere between the two, almost to your lead hip or just in front would be ideal for me
Any tips on how to not hit the ground first with driver. Ever since I started swinging down first I have a tendency to hit ground first. Thanks
If you film your swing from behind you’ll see right away if you rotate your body before moving your arms bc the club head will take a weird turn before coming down
I’ve got myself down from 14 to 11 this season but I’m still loosing 7-8 strokes a round off the tee , all my other game is in a good place , I stand on tee with driver and can only guess where it’s going to go
My club pro gave me a lesson and was basically saying the same thing as you get the hands dropped down faster and less body rotation
I’m getting there but getting the occasional big duck hook which he said would happen so now it’s just trying to neutralise it
Yeah I’d say a duck hook is a good sign, not the ideal shot but shows things are changing which is good
@@ChrisRyanGolf certainly bud , my miss is a high right slice when I get too quick so slowed my swing down and changed club path has done wonders
Does the "arms first" concept as discussed in the video apply to irons and woods?
It does yes
Do you make the same swing with irons and Fairway Woods?
Any tweaks for someone whose tee shots all too often start low left and curve further left? Attempted correction results in high push slices..
Hi Chris, would you say, arms swing down would be the same for irons and full swing wedge? thanks
Pretty much yes, less so with partial wedges with less length in the backswing though
@@ChrisRyanGolfthank you! Been trying that, driver feels better. Especially I m over the top a lot with driver.
is this for all other clubs too! I have issues with my left arm
Yep you can use this concept through the bag
I got a tee time Friday at 9:35m. See ya then
What if I’m doing the same patterns but instead of the heel I’m doing nothjng but skying every drive and coming so far off the toe? Same deal?
Is this the same concept for woods and irons?
It is yes
i heard you say, if i gave him that only he'd be worse off. but I'm not sure what you changed after that... could you explain? also, does this apply to irons also?
I explained this at the end of the video, I had to change his ball position too once his swing shape had changed, the club was bottoming out somewhere else so we had to move the ball back to make everything fit together
Also does apply to irons yes
So when I tend to hook, does that mean I’m likely not rotating my chest enough towards target ? 😅
Yes very likely, arms passing the body too early
9 minute mark on tells the whole story..ie look back drill
Check out Marcus Edblad if you:
1. Hate slicing.
2. Are afraid to make a full swipe at the ball.
you waited until the 13th tee to help him? not your fave bro-in-law, i take it, lol
Best explanation I’ve seen 👏👏👏
Thanks so much 🙌🙌🙌
When I try to start the downswing with the arms like that I hit 8 inches behind the ball in the ground.
Me and lee have lots in common
I don't even think about my arms. I turn them off and use my legs as the first move down and the arms are the last thing to go down. Having to think about the arms ruins my golf swing.
Wouldn’t that pertain to all your clubs minus ball position?
⛳
Those shots look like mine.
another unorthodox training !!! How many pros and lpga players do that... ?????
Do what? Hit straight drives that go pretty far? I think there are quite a few of them
