Hi guys hope you enjoyed the video! We just wanted to make you aware of our coaching series 5 Shots Lower that you can access for free here ⛳👉meandmygolf.com/five-shots-lower/?RUclips&SL_Free&SM
Yeah, my first question watching this would be, are you left-eyed or right-eyed? Because that can make a big difference in what you see once you get over your ball & then look down your line.
@@jamesrobbins26 I teach golf, too. If you are right-handed, you are typically right-eye dominant. From a putting perspective, in simple terms, it means you're more likely to see things moving more right to left than they actually do. If you're curious which is your dominant eye, just ask your eye doctor and he'll tell you. This is really prevalent in the golf swing, too. Beginners tend to aim WAY more right than they should and it's just because that's what their right eye is telling them to do. In the golf swing, the simple use of the club across your chest with the grip pointing towards the fairway will tell you where your body is aiming. In putting, it's not that easy because you're talking about feet and inches rather than hundreds of yards. This teaching lesson does a great job of showing this. He aimed, what looked like, at least 6" and sometimes a whole foot, more right than he should have. If you struggle with aiming, this guy's fix is brilliant.
not only did I love the bluntness of the expert you brought in but your willingness to show your weaknesses. As professors of golf, that ability to show you still don't know everything makes me want to watch more videos. They say that those that can't do, teach, but you can do AND you teach, but we can all get better, so thanks for being vulnerable for us.
What a clip! I've been a subscriber for a long time, but that was the best one yet. To have a highly esteemed expert telling us how it is, bluntly and honest, while bringing that kind of experience was a good watch. More like this please! 👌
I've always thought that your video with Rory driving the ball from a few years back was your best video. This one just took the crown for me. This process is so simple, but 100% effective at determining what is actually going wrong in your putting. If you can't roll the ball through the gate, you instantly know what to work on. If you can roll the ball through the gate, is it a read or alignment issue? For you, it was a bit of both. The stroke is pure but the target and aim needed work. I've been wanting to buy one of Derek's plates for a while, but didn't see why I needed one over my SKLZ mirror aside from the portability of the form factor. This video sold me. I have a feeling this video will sell a lot of plates.
Like 99% of golfers, I struggled with aiming my putter correctly. I've used this Coach's aim plates and couldn't transfer the feel from the practice green to the course UNTIL I used the plate in conjunction with an elevated laser line. The laser line enabled me to visualize the start line. My putting has improved dramatically
Head tilt (we all have some) can drastically change the way we perceive the horizon. If your head is tilted slightly to the left it will tilt your perception of the horizon so that the left side seems slightly higher than the right, and visa-versa. If Piers tilts his head slightly to the right when reading the green this would negate the real slope and make it appear level (horizontal) to him. It would have been interesting to do the same test at the same hole but from the opposite side. The Putting Plate looks like a good bit of kit 👍
I don't have as much trouble as I used to when I'm putting because I've been through the Piers and Andy Me and My Golf Complete Putting Coaching Plan as a Member. The drills helped me enormously hole more putts. I still practice 10-15 minutes before I go out and play 9 or 18 holes and I practice regularly on a putting green as well as at home. I hope I'll be able to afford the new putting mat if I don't win the competition. A great video though! Good luck with your putting Piers.
If Piers misread it that much, I can`t imagine what I would`ve done. I hope Piers and Andy are getting settled in well as it`s not an easy thing to leave your country. All the best!
It just shows how important green reading is and most golfers don't actually have a way to practice it and get better. Hope you enjoyed the video and settling it to the US great thanks. Appreciate your support.
we spend so much tiem with ball striking that it leaves little with the most important part of our game putting. we give more strokes away on or around the green than any other part of our game. This video has won the internet of the year. so simple yet breaks down many barriers from the head to the club
Of all the great videos you guys have made, this one is possibly the best. Thanks to Pierce for getting beat up for the benefit of all golfers trying to be better putters! Cheers
This is a brilliant drill! Definitely going to try and find time for this one! I’m exactly the same. Can line it up and then stand over it and it’s nowhere near or “looks” nowhere near! Great video gents! 🤙🏻
I had a terrible time reading greens until I switched from sunglasses with the normal grey lenses to ones with brown lenses. It is unbelievable how much better that has made my green reading. I can now see the slopes and undulations much better.
@@coastzapper9297 The point is that the brown lenses will show way more than the naked eye. Also they are prescription so going without is not a very good option either.
I used to use Aimpoint, but got away from it. Have been using mostly my eyes to read greens and while my mechanics and speed are pretty good, my reads have been poor. Can't wait to get out and try this!!
I had the same problem years ago and I was truly a horrendous putter. I mean bad! My eyes and stroke were totally disjointed. I figured this out on my own by buying a 36” metal ruler at Lowe’s and forced myself to learn how to putt down the line while forcing my eyes to look back and forth at the center spot at the far end of the ruler to re-teach my eyes to marry-up the actual line with my putting stroke. When I began, I couldn’t hit a ball down the ruler missing 10 of 10. Now, I can roll 10 of 10 down the ruler occasionally missing one off the edge. I also purchased a putting plate to force the same on the practice green. It took about three seasons and weekly work and putting down the ruler throughout the winter months. I now hit on the line I see and I’m considered an excellent putter at my club.
I've had problems putting as well. My instructor told me to start using the line on the ball to line up putts, which I started to do. So, I get behind my ball, I read the putt and I align the ball on my chosen line. Then I stand over the ball and 99 times out of 100 the line on the ball looks like it is aimed way left of where my chosen line is. Most of the time I end up ignoring the line on the ball and adjust my aim more to the right. So, something is happening when I stand over the ball. It's like I see the break better from standing over the ball than when I'm standing behind it. So, recently, I've stopped using the line on the ball and seem to be getting slightly better results. Now, I position the ball so I see nothing but blank/white space and just trust my eyes. I found the only way I can get the line on the ball to look like it's pointing on my chosen line is if I have the ball directly under my trail eye, my right eye, my dominant eye. I don't know if that's coincidence or if that makes sense. Anyway, I am going to start using an alignment device like you've shown in this video when I practice putting from now on. Thanks, great vid.
I agree. Feet first ignore the eyes. Pick the slope on feel pick aimpoint on feel and trust it. Eyes see distance. If you can’t feel right to left or left to right , then use eyes to best guess which side of the “hole” to put it in. Based on the entire green or grain.
Glad you enjoyed it Simon! Get working on your green reading and it's worth investing in a "putting calibration" aid. We have a "Stroke Trainer in our store in the description that is great!
this totally explains why i stopped trusting my eyes than feel. it's also why i stopped lining up putts bc my body ends up doing whatever "feels" right to me!
I always use the heavy black line on the ball to set up my putt after I plumb bob the putt. Then when I stand over the putt I check to see that my eyeline agrees with the heavy ball line. I know that my eyes have to be about 3 inches inside the ball line and three inches in front of the ball. I have the S7K standup putter and when I help bad putters I use it to test and correct their eyeline setups. The worst advice is to have your eyes directly over the ball. It only works if your head position and eyesight are perfect with zero astigmatisms.
Not sure if I really grasped what the solution is, but I guess this was an exercise in determining if your eyes are seeing the line/slope properly? So, more of a diagnosis, than a correction ?
You guys are above me I am not worthy it took me a long time to get second shot on the green on 4&5’s I suck at putting started with getting my putter adjusted because it got bent before I started playing again Thank you greatly
Great video - what’s the solution to reading greens better? If Piers goes on the course how does he now become a good green reader? Great stuff guys well done
Padrick Harrington says that amateurs always underestimate the break by at least 3 times what it is, now we can see that pro's can do the same as well. thanks for the reminder!
For me it is the other way round, I sometimes change the line, when standing at the ball, but mostly after the putt I realize that my visual line was the better one 😉
Great video guys 👏 this is like watching exactly how this lesson would be if I was having the lesson. Green reading for me is the hardest thing in golf 🤯🤦🏻♂️
It’s not just a question of trusting your feet or your eyes. It’s when do you trust one or another. From behind the ball looking at the hole, the read can be different than when standing over the ball. At that point, the feet may or may not play the part. I sometimes change my read when over the ball because my eyes see a different line. One could argue that it’s because of my feet. But what if I tell you I don’t use a square stance but a very open stance? Think about that. This was an excellent video. I would love to have a conversation with the master as I’ve been considered the best putter in the club for most of my career.
The Golf Guru admits he sucks at putting. That really made me smile. Watching the video though, I realize you have a great stroke, it's reading the green that's a problem. As the teacher mentioned, one's eyes and senses have to be aligned. But I'll guarantee, I can be on putting greens where my eyes and senses tell me one thing and the ball does the exact opposite. Most assuredly though, good puttters have stroke, green reading and ball speed down.
Amazing content here! This happened to be the video I watched from this account. I had to pause in the first 3 minutes to subscribe and look up the putting plates website. Will for sure be picking up a putting plate. Brilliant tool. Great video.
my biggest trouble seeing my line, I use a line on ball and I switched to a pencil grip which also helps. Xander etc also practice 2 hr per day on putting which might help.
I'm definitely that person who lines up the line on the ball to the start line and then stands over it and goes, "that doesn't look right." Then I correct on the fly without resetting for pace of play.
Andy - you might have the same problem I do. I discovered this year that my dominant eye is twisted significantly relative to actual horizontal. So if I rapidly switch looking through my left and right eyes, the horizon angle changes! The only way I can read a green is to close that eye and look with the other one, which sees properly. Discovering this profoundly improved my green reading.
@@bemba187 it is something else. It is an actual twisting of the eye. So the vision can be totally in focus unlike astigmatism, but it causes things to look rotated compared to what your brain thinks is level. So for example, when I close my left eye and just look with my right eye (which is the twisted one), if the green is perfectly level it looks like it is sloping towards the left. Because of this I was always aiming to the right of the hole thinking that the ball would roll down to the left!
Wow, I'm delighted that someone reads putts exactly the same as me, I read greens completely wrong with my eyes and definitely drop 10-15 shots per round due to poor putting
Do you have any tips or recommendations on how to read the green which seemed to be a big problem in this video? Thanks! Great video and advice! Thinking about getting one of those putter plates! is there any tool to buy for the string to tie to the tees?
I watched it 3 times and could not figure out what was happening. Please let me know if I am correct. Did he aim completely in the opposite direction of the actual break or did I still have no idea what was going on?
I am on team Piers for this one. I can’t see it either but never tried feeling it with my feet. Will work on that to check if my feet and eyes are disconnected.
Sometimes I lose my alignment throughout a round trying to correct my mistakes. Got to make it muscle memory where you can get back into the zone and dial it back in when things get out of wack!
Not sure if it’s the camera angle but Piers dominant eye seems to be left of the ball (towards to the hole) instead of directly over. I wonder if that could have caused him to misread the putt. Great video and got me thinking about some adjustment I can make. Thank you!
Great demo! I wonder what additional affect putting on what is essentially a hilly, canyon course has on Pier's ability to read breaks. Having grown up and played around southern California the old adage of "it breaks toward the ocean" goes right out the window on hilly courses if you don't first recognize whether your putt is going up canyon or down canyon. Your thoughts?
Thanks David. Yes I imagine that bi slopes may be tricky for Piers. It's a great place to start though and work on rather than going straight to technique. Glad you enjoyed it.
So we learnt, you can putt straight but can't read greens? How about some guidance on how to read greens better, best stance to use for different putter types, best type of grip to use, best shaft length for your height?
OK so I'm a little confused about what you were showing. Are you trying to say go more with what you feel versus what you see? Is there another video showing more on reading greens?
I have this same problem. I once played a tournament and for like 14 holes I had no idea where the putts were going. Mike Malaska has an interesting take on this. He feels that getting your eyes directly over the line skews your view of the line. That could be correlated to which eye is dominant. I moved back away and more upright and feel like I see it better.
This is exactly what I did - after seeing the same video. I went from a 33" to a 35" putter, I stand much taller and open, I'm right eye VERY dominant, and my putting has dramatically improved - like insanely better. I also practiced Tiger's one-hand putting drill for a few weeks until I felt my right hand completely in control of the face and able to putt 1-handed almost better than 2-handed, and now I just place my left hand on, after my right hand is on, without moving my right hand (thus also partially why I went with the longer putter), and I would now say that I've gone from being a poor putter to a well above average putter.
@@wallstreetoneil I game a 34" putter. I had always gripped down on a 35" so when I finally bought a new putter I just went with the 34". I'm still able to stand taller and away from the ball. I'm left eye dominant so the line really did have a tendency to looked skewed. I've been practicing with the blast motion sensor to dial in the speed and tempo of my stroke for more distance control. So far so good. I also have committed to using aimpoint for reading greens. That has felt like black magic for reading greens. I've had fairly accurate results with it.
@paul O’Neil , you stand open when you putt, meaning your feet/ stance? That is interesting. See that with long arm lock putters but haven’t with normal putters. Will try that out….i experimented at stores w arm lock and feel I see line well with an open stance but can’t get myself to buy one.
@@mikechristensen4809 I game a spider. I wanted to try out an arm lock, but they didn't have any. They had the odyssey 2 ball ten. I tried that one but it felt like cheap plastic. I didn't like the feel of it. I still would like to try an arm lock, but nobody around my area has any to try.
I’m left eye dominant. I have so squint my right eye when reading the or cock my head. I do the same in shooting sports but only cock my head to the right looking down the barrel sites. Once the ball print is set my misses are usually speed related. That plate is a great training aid plus the tee placement. Awesome instruction.
Just watched the Rick Sheils and Brad Faxton putting video and he said putter face angle at set up is irrelevant…. It’s funny how both are experts and hold such opposing views. Just reinforces how personal putting is to the golfer.
Playing partner yesterday told me there are only 2 factors to putting. Line and pace get these 2 things right and you’ll hole every putt. It’s as easy as that 🤣🤣
Thanks Mark. Hope you're well mate!!? Yes this was great. Love how simple Derek keeps it and didn't work on technique until we even looked at the read. Shows how key this is.
In a feet reader. Since the 80s. I've always had an issue dealing with setup trust. At address the feet and ball are in a certain relationship. But that's the point where the ball travels fastest and break matters least. Reading the rest of the putt then trusting it ALL once at address again is tough.... imo.
Halfway through the video and I have a similar issue specifically on left to right putts where I cannot see those breaks. Right to left putts I can see fine, but I misread so many left to right putts it's silly.
I don't suck at putting at all. I "see" a line from the hole back to the ball, I line up the putter face so it is square to the line, I avoid peeking and hit it in or close enough for a tap in.
It's very unusual for your eyesight to have the same read from behind as from sideways and above. Line up a straight 20-foot putt and put a marker exactly on the line halfway to the hole, then take up your address position and see if you still think the marker is on the line. In my case it looks as though a ball rolling over the marker would miss four inches to the left, but I know it's dead on line! In some way you have to compensate for this parallax error, in my case learning to aim one inch right of my intended line for every five feet of distance.

Discovering this profoundly improved my green reading.
Is that astigmatism? Or something else? Because I know I have astigmatism in my dominant eye and wonder if I have a similar thing going on.
Great tuition thanks
2:50 that conflict is a right eye dominant right handed player problem
So much quality information perfectly digestible for the average golfer! 🤯
We're glad you enjoyed the video Patrick!
Great video, thanks! I like the string line used in the video. Where did you buy it from?
Great video. I have this problem in reverse. I can read the putt, but when I stand over the ball my eyes make me aim to far to the right.
Do you have any tips or recommendations on how to read the green which seemed to be a big problem in this video? Thanks! Great video and advice! Thinking about getting one of those putter plates! is there any tool to buy for the string to tie to the tees?
Can you lmk if you found what string thing that is?
I watched it 3 times and could not figure out what was happening. Please let me know if I am correct. Did he aim completely in the opposite direction of the actual break or did I still have no idea what was going on?
Brilliant move!
I am on team Piers for this one. I can’t see it either but never tried feeling it with my feet. Will work on that to check if my feet and eyes are disconnected.
Hi Danielle. Hope you are well!. Definitely something to work on for you then. Our Stroke Trainer might be very useful for you.
Yeah, right. 🙄
Very helpful lesson !!!
That was eye opening for sure, never thought about approaching your putting in this way great lesson cheers
Thanks Steve. Shows how important green reading is and how much we can be out. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Greatest stuff in putting👍
Very helpful!
Great way to diagnose misreads!
How do you plan on solving the issue without the tools during a round?
Sometimes I lose my alignment throughout a round trying to correct my mistakes. Got to make it muscle memory where you can get back into the zone and dial it back in when things get out of wack!
Exactly
Great video!
Oh my that was terrific. I'll just say that Piers is not alone and I want that plate and line to practice with.
Glad you enjoyed it Mark. Green reading is huge and certainly the place to start when it comes to working on your putting.
What is the plate called and how can it be ordered?
Great Putting Lesson! Thank you!
Thanks Alan. Hope this was useful.
Well done lads 👍
What a great video! Thanks guys! 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it Rob!
What is the “putting plate” he is referring to? I love the idea of the string to show how far out the sim point is! Simple but effective
What a fun lesson.
awesome video guys
Never did tell us how to correct our inability to read the green! From the camera angel I thought the brake was from right to left.
Where can we purchase the putting guide you used in the video?
Great video but I am confused what line I use on bacswing and forward swing. Straight back? Arc back?
How do you feel about the plumb bob with the putter ?, it works pretty well for me
Great lesson. Can you provide a link to that putting aid and the string gadget please?
There is a link in the description Donny.
So we learnt, you can putt straight but can't read greens? How about some guidance on how to read greens better, best stance to use for different putter types, best type of grip to use, best shaft length for your height?
Reality....WOW
OK so I'm a little confused about what you were showing. Are you trying to say go more with what you feel versus what you see? Is there another video showing more on reading greens?
Where does one purchase a putting plate like the one used?
I’m sorry but I didn’t see one thing in this video that showed a useful drill or an explanation as to why isn’t any good at reading greens.
Nothing
I’m left eye dominant. I have so squint my right eye when reading the or cock my head. I do the same in shooting sports but only cock my head to the right looking down the barrel sites. Once the ball print is set my misses are usually speed related. That plate is a great training aid plus the tee placement. Awesome instruction.
감사합니다.
If you have great speed control, you can creat different line into a hole
What does he use to tie around the tee with the string
Just watched the Rick Sheils and Brad Faxton putting video and he said putter face angle at set up is irrelevant…. It’s funny how both are experts and hold such opposing views. Just reinforces how personal putting is to the golfer.
Does the camera operator know this is a putting video?
what tool is he using for this string attached to the tee to read this line? Its retractile and I want one. lol
Gold Jerry, gold!
Playing partner yesterday told me there are only 2 factors to putting. Line and pace get these 2 things right and you’ll hole every putt. It’s as easy as that 🤣🤣
Good stuff guys! That felt like me on the greens at the minute :)
Thanks Mark. Hope you're well mate!!? Yes this was great. Love how simple Derek keeps it and didn't work on technique until we even looked at the read. Shows how key this is.
very interesting. now to try and find a UK supplier of those plates
Check out our Stroke Trainer in our store. The link is in the description. It’s a great tool.
In a feet reader. Since the 80s. I've always had an issue dealing with setup trust. At address the feet and ball are in a certain relationship. But that's the point where the ball travels fastest and break matters least. Reading the rest of the putt then trusting it ALL once at address again is tough.... imo.
Awesome, great vid.
Thanks Philip. Glad you enjoyed it.
What if you are using tees that have larger heads than others? Then the gate would be too small or?
Pierce are you left or right dominant eye. I have the same problem and I'm right handed and left dominant eye.
