I STILL think this was the most technically proficient hornline EVER in DCI. Their attacks were razor sharp no matter what they played and those runs were smooth as silk. THIS is and will always be the GOLD STANDARD for DCI brass.
Even in my prime I was lousy at triple tonguing. This line is outstanding. Great balance with enough low brass, and the sopranos have the modesty to keep the balance - contributing to best effect.
@@CSRookieI’ll have to give them a listen, also I can share a google drive link that has shows from 1974 - 2019 in it if you want, it’s broken down by season from first place down
Matt Harloff has this energy that astounds me. He has the kind of constructive criticism that inspires and inflicts a drive to be better and do whatever it takes to be a champion
Carolina Crown is without a doubt the best hornline I have ever heard in my life....the strength, power, and intonation are TRULY unparalleled! AND they get BETTER each year...its incredible!
4:53 - if anyone is curious, this is a staple of CC, and it's phenomenal in person. the entire point is to check each instrument group, ensuring they are so exactly in tune through playing that there are no wobbles or waves in the combined pitch of all instruments (you'll hear him call out "no beats" which is a wave sound you'll faintly hear with the most slightly out of tune player). it's literally checking that each players lips are vibrating _exactly_ in time with their peers - even after going explicitly out of tune at several points. it's significant. the climax at the end always gives goosebumps, and I highly recommend you get a chance to experience it in person for warmups if you ever get the chance.
my band director made us watch this to show how intense and serious the band was. and they're intense singing and various reps of the same parts of the show. he emphasized the director yelling feet over and over again so they would remember to mark time
I've been a huge DCI fan since my freshman year of high school (6 years ago) and I still hate when people are elitist about calling them bands. A drum corps is a type of band, it really isn't debatable.
Eston Hensley it’s fine that it’s gotten different throughout the years but there is absolutely no point in arguing that the work put in by every corps isn’t far above almost any “band” you will find. Corps is not just a “military term for the old days”, it’s the distinction between the next level of marching and performance.
Maybe that's a big reason of why Crown's hornline is so good. Their brass ensemble leader guy person is so enthusiastic, and maybe his enthusiasm is contagious.
Almost makes me sad I aged out in 2011. Damn near perfectly ballenced hornline, I was always taught the line's sound emanates from the contras, so I feel maybe a touch more volume from those guys and the euphs would enrich the sound. But as I said, that's just how the corps I were in were taught, this sound is spectacular regardless of what I think.
XxTrumpetCheerxX Yeah my band was dirt for a while, but we got a new band director before I graduated and he changed the whole band around. It really depends on your director. This is true :)
Phostings1 My band director has been teaching at my school for 31 years, but he's more of a southern style/jazz kind of guy. Honestly I think my high school band could benefit from a teacher who has more of a corps background.
"The whole summer depends on tonight, and doing that ending! You have to show up! No individuals, nobody's scared, nothing! Everything you've got, this whole weekend on that! And it has to do with your power! You! You create the electricity that nobody else can! YOU DO!" Fucking hell, Matt. I wanna run 10 full marathons now cuz of you 😩
I was not able to find it, but somewhere out there is a video of Star's brass in 93 warming up in the lot which included ALOT of singing. Possibly a yearbook video?
"You creat the electricity that nobody else can." Those are words any musician should live by
"C'mon, stop cracking. GET PISSED OFF WHEN YOU CRACK!"
YAS you caught that little speech too! *air high five*
At first I thought he said stop crying, I get pissed off when you cry, cracking makes a lot more sense
3:29
Best horn line of all time right here folks.
I could never disagree with that personally I thought crown should've won this year
it was their show, especially compared to bluecoats. They just have great performance skill.
Phantom is my fav. overall. But they all change year from year. CC is pretty damn good here
Sean Sutherland they did win that year
Nick Niehaus he talking about in 2016😭

I think it's a tie between them and '94 devils, imo

Seriously how do they have such angelic voices?
Sometimes, the best bands make the best choirs :)
Practice, mkay!
Floyd Schelby Thanks.
Overtones on a 9th chord while singing. Alright
Jack Nelson Which part is the 9th chord? My music theory knowledge isn't that great haha
You can hear their tubas THE ENTIRE TIME
GOOD.
YAS.
We were told to not hear the tubas but to feel them.
you hear the tubas so well because of how they are positioned...they are spaced out
Contras, but yes you can
I'm a huge BD fan, but I have to admit, this is insane. They could never achieve this awesome brass sound.
theres a reason Crown always gets the brass caption
Crown is the only corps that still resembles a G bugle hornline. Their orchestration is so warm and powerful.
Hey Shier
Thanks
Luke Conners k thx
Matt Harloff has this energy that astounds me. He has the kind of constructive criticism that inspires and inflicts a drive to be better and do whatever it takes to be a champion
Matt Harloff is THE MAN! I hope to inspire my students to that level of greatness!
Listening and watching Harloff makes me want to go practice...very unique individual...
Yo jefri what’s good man how are you holdin up with your students after all these years
Carolina Crown is the reason I still watch DCI. They are so good
It's been 7 months since I've heard this hornline live, and it still gives me some of the most overwhelming chill bumps I've ever had.
What about 8 years later?
@@Ilostmyschmungus what about 9 years later?

That motivational speech at the ending was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.
only reason why I regret choosing an woodwind :l
you can change your instrument and move to brass ya know
Had an oboe player audition for Spirit on baritone. It’s not impossible.
John Kim I’m a bassoonist who marched bari sax for three years and will be auditioning for Spirit of Atlanta on baritone for the 2020 season

7:05 is just amazing. I've listened to this probably a thousand times.. it never gets old!
How about this show never gets old?
It doesn't lol. I've watched and pretty much memorized every note, chord, and visual of this show!
When I listen to the drumline warmup, I literally know where are they playing. This show is amazing.
I am a hornline freak lol. But as much as i've listened to the show I could probably pick it out lol
7:05 is pretty rad, and follow it up with 7:33. Wow, my heart belongs to BD, but this line is SICK!!
He's so inspiring I just ran a half marathon.

5:07 "Make a 'contra' bution now." XD
Joseph Shelton Underrated post
You just made my day. :D
Pfft didn't think of that
I really appreciate instrumentalists who understand that singing helps them play their instrument better. This group clearly gets that!
ugh dream hornline right here. i love crown so much
Most amazing horn line ever
my band director made us watch this to show how intense and serious the band was. and they're intense singing and various reps of the same parts of the show. he emphasized the director yelling feet over and over again so they would remember to mark time
akatsukibri I march drum Corp and I don't have a problem with this but for your own safety I suggest you never call a drum Corp a band
Gabe Trotter idk there is no resembelence of the old military style so "Corp" really isn't too fitting anymore
I've been a huge DCI fan since my freshman year of high school (6 years ago) and I still hate when people are elitist about calling them bands. A drum corps is a type of band, it really isn't debatable.
BandNerdcp ya I understand, I was a fan my freshmen year, now I'm a sophomore and got a contract for the troopers, goal for the next few days is crown

I was there at this warmup. Best release of a tuning sequence I’ve ever heard, probably ever will.

honestly yeah probably
Harloff got me a little pumped up with his motivation speech 9:41

I’m assuming you were in rach star so did you know a contra named David?
gotta love those little clicks in unison when the horns snap up :P
7:21 Talk about a PERFECT fifth!
I watched dci primarily in the 90's, this organization has come a long way
it’s more crazy now lol
If i was being given those kind of inspirational speeches every competition i'd give it 200%!!!

That's some supernatural brass arrangement sounds honestly.
Cries because my marching band is dirt compared to this
XxTrumpetCheerxX I think everyones HS marching band is dirt to this. xD

+Phostings1 well we got 3rd states for 2A so I guess we're not that bad, were the top 5 2A bands in Florida :)
someone told me marching band\drum corps required no effort at all. then i showed him this.
Drum corps takes as much effort as any sport
+kia2008100 If not more than sports.
kia2008100 no it takes way more than sports bud......
The amount of pure grit and dedication this activity requires far outweighs almost any sport you can throw out at this level
brody bergstrom I would hope you don't talk to that person anymore
Listen to this with headphones full blast at
I did.....with beats! FREAKIN AMAZING..
The brass staff is amazing, just top of the notch amazing.
That's a good one. To clarify, he's actually saying "Get pissed off when you crack," not "I get pissed off when you crack."
"The whole summer depends on tonight, and doing that ending! You have to show up! No individuals, nobody's scared, nothing! Everything you've got, this whole weekend on that! And it has to do with your power! You! You create the electricity that nobody else can! YOU DO!"

@@jordancampos6864 I think he’s talking about Matt Harloff
Matt Harloff is the God of Brass. He was the drum major for Star of Indiana in 1993 too.
What a spectacular horn line!
god fucking damnit this is so badass
I can't believe this even possible. Holy crap Carolina Crown.
Went on to score the first and only perfect brass score at finals.
I love at 4:29 when the tech tries to talk then he gets blasted at and he’s like “ok rude”

Great sound! I've ALWAYS liked that song @3:36
dang those are just warmups no wonder they got world champs!!!
Show excerpts, singing, and basic tuning? Yeah, all top tier corps warm up that way.
I think that perfect 20 speaks for itself here
Great!!!! I love the discipline!!!
7:05 holy trumpets
Beautiful
holy overtones...
Best part is 3:30 "Stop cracking I get pissed off when you crack!!!" XD
That tuning sequence tho
Wow. That's the most amazing thing I've seen in a while
Just watched their performance on the Fan Network. Killer recording. Would have loved to march with them.
That first minute just looks cool and sounds cool
I was across the campus listening to some other corps warming up...ugh I was there for this and missed it by 400 yards
I could hear the melo lick at 0:50 🙌🏼 amazingnfudgsgshs
7:07... actual goose bumps
7:02 - 7:27 best chord progression ever
Sounds right there alongside the DCI cavaliers out of Illinois on their performance of Rosanna oncore in Buffalo New York.
