Crowns book was harder that year but everything else was just so outclassed by BD in 2014 it didn’t even matter. Especially the writing, BD2014 is as close to a perfect show we’ll ever get
@@Ace_v120seeing both in person I understand why devils brass scored higher. Their writing was so much better to the rest of the show and those guys literally mastered every single style in the show. It’s so hard to say at this level that one was much better but if you were there you’d understand. I luckily was on tour that year and able to watch 70% of the devils shows and they absolutely deserved a win in ever single category
Others may not feel the same way but I think things like this are inspiring. I strive to be the best trumpet playing I can be and things like this just make me all happy and full of hope. I absolutely love crown and what they do.
To think that the low brass learned another instrument for 1:40 is insane. the baritone and tubas are playing trumpet and mello. AND they sound so freaking good
I remember getting off field at Lucas oil, rushing to go change and get my snacks to go watch the coats murder this at finals. I had probably watched them perform tilt close to 10 or 11 times that season. But finals was different. Hearing that ballad for what I knew was the last time I would ever hear it in my life made me cry like a baby
This is why I love CC. Their shows are so diverse in rhythms and style yet they flow so well. Between the HUGE(well balanced) sound they put out during the whole show(but especially the holds. Like seriously, your getting a cinder block wall in your face every time!!) and the ridiculously fast licks they play, I don't see any Drum Corps steeling the title of my favorite any time soon. I hope CC keeps this up. If they do, I'll bet they'll have a couple more DCI titles before the decade is out.
Look at the recap. The judge on Finals night nailed it. Crown took the content category because they played more notes. BD took the achievement category because they were cleaner. From my seat in the 600 level on the 45 yard line, I would agree completely with the brass judge.
Michael Alsop i personally know the finals night brass judge and i completely agree, He was 100 percent correct in the judging. it's not about how difficult the music is, it's about how clean it sounds
It wasn't just that BD was clean in terms of rhythm - attacks and releases, etc. They were also super in tune and had a big, balanced sound. I loves me some crown, but BD's hornline was ridiculous. Now that Crown has finally proven themselves, got a championship, and are not demoted purely because of politics, I try to think less about who-scored-what, and more about "this is some friggin epic music - let me get this in my soul."
Scheater5 Ridiculous is 1:39 when the bari's, euph's, and tubas put down their instruments and pick up a TRUMPET for the hottest horn licks in DCI this summer. ....and second place for hottest horn lick isn't even close.... Let's review; entire horn line on trumpet or mello, spread out over 35 yards back field, playing the sickest syncopation with the sickest mello runs cutting through the ensemble, and stacking the sickest 3 octave high brass cord I've ever heard. There was no comparison this year for repertoire, because for the hottest horn section of the whole show, most of the horn line WASN'T ON THEIR OWN INSTRUMENT!!!!!!!
I sort of feel that Crown is the new Star of Indiana in that they are not really appreciated fully by judges etc. Just think, Star '93 didn't win and that showed pretty much single handedly revolutionized the drum corps we watch today. To me, Crown is at the forefront. For the 2014 show to not be at least top two, crazy! For them not to win in '09, nuts! They will break through I hope, but they may have to do something drastic and unexpected. Don't misunderstand me either, I'm not hating on other corps' either, they are all awesome and deserving of their awards. Lord knows the Cadets were pushing the envelope for awhile too
Percussion kills them every year not that they are bad drumline they just need to bump them up to top 4 drumline and they will start winning all the time .
Why does the space between those notes in the trumpets at 2:10 sound so crushed? Is it to compensate for how spread out the hornline is during that part of the show so it sounds correct on the field?
That is exactly why it sounds that way. I marched with this group and if you listen to the finals recording you can hear the clarity that is missing in this video. Good ears man!
Guys remember…this is not just “the best brass ensemble on a marching field”; I contend it’s one of the best brass ensembles to ever play brass instruments. This is SOOOOOO technically proficient, with crazy breath control, crazy dynamics, and perfect tuning at all possible volumes. They are world beaters. I will go to my grave preaching that it’s on the same level of miraculous performance as Cirque Du Soliel, Olympics, etc. The entire package of a show from all of the top 10 corps every year is arguably the greatest entertainment bang for the buck imaginable.
At this point, I’ve watched this video a bajillion times, but I can’t help smile when Harloff cuts off the hornline and looks out at the crowd at 2:28. His face is basically saying “yeah that’s right, my hornline RULES.”

This IS the best brass playing in all of DCI. Not gonna lie. There is a lot that comes close, but if I had to pick one section of a show that was the best, this would be it.
Lost respect for DCI and their unregulated or supervised judging many times since early 2000s, but it just gets worse every year. The fact that this hornline did NOT win the Jim OTT trophy was nothing but shady stuff going on in press box in parking lot, at band camps, promised jobs whatever. UNREAL!! This hornline was better than the 2013 hornline yet somehow scored worse and lost the brass trophy. This was the best hornline I have ever ever ever heard live in DCI. Again it comes back to what I believe is DCI feeling pressure from BD especially when BD loses the year before. You can go back to 2000 cadets for instance. Great hornline great show and won brass trophy, however everyone with any ears including members and staff knew that the 01 hornline was far cleaner and more talented than the 00 hornline yet lost to BD in brass at finals. It is just stupid. This Crown 14 hornline how they did not win brass nevermind the show is just beyond me. Please don't tell me how their show is reason they did not win. How did BD win brass like every year mid 80s early 90s with 4th and 5th place finishes? BD should have walked across the field and gave the JIm OTT to Crown. Even if you were a member of BD hornline in 14 you knew Crown was better. Anyone with any musical sense at all knows it.
I fully agree as well. The judging at DCI has gotten worse and worse every year, and this year was no exception. I don't believe that Crown should have won this year, but taking 5th place with a hornline like that... Something is definitely going on behind the performances on those judging panels..
I agreed with you, but you have to admit that Felliniesque was about as close to perfect as you can get. did they deserve perfect GE and visual and nearly perfect music? probably not. but they did an amazing job, and they deserved 1st
wow. totally agree. that 01 cadets brass was amazing. actually, i felt like 00 bd was ahead of the cadets but the cavies smoked both on those g bugles (a tie between Cadets on Bb and Cavies on G). That's why in the end its not about who wins... its about the legacy of your show. I love 1990 and 1992 BD. When those guys that marched those years here that I listen to their music in the car, it puts a smile on their face. Thats what Drum Corps all about: leaving it all on that field for the enjoyment of the crowd and for fans to treasure your work for years. Hell, thats what all art is about.
BD and Cadets should have flipped years on the brass trophy. BD should have won 00 and cadets 01. 00 finals performance of cadets there were cracks and over playing all over. Cadets 01 hornline was flat out the best hornline in DCI that year. Nobody created that clean sound again until Crown in the late 2000s. 90s BD hornlines to me are still the best of all time. From 1992 through 1999 every BD hornline was just amazing to listen to.
The sharpness of articulations with especially triplets and basically any other rhythm as a major group is like... impeccable. Unheard of. Maybe old school Cadets. The balance, the arrangement, the complexity. The arranger writes as a choir writer and it proves to work amazingly. Crown the best hornline to ever exist. They’re right, as I heard a tech say to the mellos, keep it relaxed.
I know that with time, all things change. But a horn line that impressive does not need recorded tracks playing, EVER. Come on DCI and stop that silliness.

Tom Borning the 2014 show had way to much visual dirt, dirty percussion, and design flops to medal.
Percussion kills them every year not that they are bad drumline they just need to bump them up to top 4 drumline and they will start winning all the time .
