i remember watching part of this as a beginner trumpet in 6th grade and had no idea what dci was and because it was the bluecoats and their uniforms looked similar to the colts uniforms (the nfl team) i just assumed the colts had a marching band and i stopped watching it. man if i could go back in time and tell myself “go down the rabbit hole keep watching these videos” i feel i’d be better off as a player and i might’ve even marched a corps by now. i still got 5 years so there’s still hope lol.
I can guarantee you that if you looked into the open class corps (or SoundSport) you could easily find a open spot and do a video audition. In my personnel experience, the only thing stopping you is yourself and money.
@@mesirpez thanks for the motivation! I've been concerned if I was just not good enough but at least I know I have a shot if I practice enough
@@esteban_osman I thought the same thing. Got a contract in early June (2016) ended up marching two seasons. There is always open spots. You just gotta go for it.
@@esteban_osman I thought about giving up (the corps i was with had folded before the season could start). A good friend of mine that marched in 82 called me and talked to me for a good hour. it motivate me to throw some auditions out and i pulled it off. you can too.
@@mesirpez thanks man. I'm a sophomore for this upcoming year of high school but my dream is to audition for an open corp for my Junior or Senior year. I don't think I can accomplish those feats but I don't think there's much harm in trying :)
The future of DCI is whatever Bluecoats design staff want it to be.
Dude the crowd go INSANE for the wink is so surreal. Can’t imagine the feeling after hearing that.
It was a very awesome moment in the stadium.
bluecoats have the most beautifulest ballads for sure
SCV: am I a joke to you?
A thing I’ve noticed only with BC ballads is that, I never remember them, I can never sing the melody to them, ever, but in the moment they feel so amazing and beautiful
Blootiful
@@alexclyde6445 I def remember the melody to Babylon but i rewatched it so many times I might’ve just remembered it because of thay
damn i didnt know mfs from DEO fw dci hey twin 🤣🤣😂😂
Little did they know, they’d have the sickest keytar solo to exist ever in 2022
🤦
Shows trying to hard to be different these days like bro what’s next? Actual woodwinds ?
@@thanosmaster-abel559 the word you’re searching for is unique
@@TrevorEhrgood nah fr bro? Same thing
@@thanosmaster-abel559 why not be different. being different is good. if all shows had the same military style feel to it, it would just be boring. every year i feel bluecoats has always done something unique to their show like for instance the keytar solo and like their 2019 and 2021 shows. they used The Beatles for their entire rep. all these things makes them a crowd favorite, whereas a group like Blue Devils, i feel, tries to ONLY appeal to the judges. idk just my opinion though. i think things like a keytar is good. it attracts more people. there’s lot of people that cap on band people because of those stereotypes and as a result the activity is seen as nerdy or weird to most. but things like this i feel will make some people see what the activity is and they may actually start to respect it
Watched finals live that year. I was just in tears after this ballad. Couldn't hold it back
You lucky doggg
@@HernandezEncoreDCIMore this is a good show and all but to be in the stadium to hear the opening hit to relentless?? that's what i'm truly envious of
Zzzzzzzzz
1:05 it's all fun and games until you hand up the wrong instrument.
I saw this live in 2016 in semis. I cried. So hard.
This show is what made me pursue music. It was my first year marching band I was in 7th grade with a poor 1a school. We took a trip to watch dci and it was so amazing. I had never been so impressed by a show in my life before going there. I wish I paid more attention to other corps but I was mesmerized by them those impacts were unlike anything I had ever heard. The marching was like nothing I had ever seen. Went on to be a leader in the band and we made it to state finals and got second place my senior year. We broke school history for the first time in over 20 years. Music gave me that distraction in life and I hope it can continue to help others in similar situations
this is the great gig in the stratosphere
A show I don’t think I could ever forget. Being a freshman and seeing this show and hearing this song for the first time ever in a movie theater. Something absolutely changed in it.
Simply gorgeous
Never seen a corp do anthing pink floyd! Outstanding
The solo played pretty clean... love it.. incredible...
I still remember seeing this in Atlanta that year, it was so amazing even from the nosebleeds
man those glissandos in the trombones give me the shimmery wimmeries wigglies chigglies
One of my favorite songs
As someone from the Day. It reminds me of the Bridgemen in the way that it's fearless playing.
As a flute player I honestly think it's fun to see others get a flute type score when I play that stuff with ease
Bluecoats have really been leading the trend for marching band shows for years
Oh wow!!
My first year watching was 2014 and there were plenty of good shows then, and there’s plenty of good shows now.
However I knew that when Bluecoats did this in 2016, if they won that it would change the activity forever. When it happened I knew it was going to change for the worse as far as crowd-entertaining shows are concerned.
However since 2021 I can’t remember being as entertained as I was for some of those shows, ie Cadets, Phantom, Colts (who I used to not really be a fan of, completely changed now).
For 22, the top 4 corps were all awesome and crowd pleasing in their own ways. Crown was awesome, Bluecoats were awesome with those car axle props, Boston’s guard and clarity, and honestly BD’s music. Playing Tank while marching marching, and they weren’t exactly halted for their closer either.
Hopefully dci is on the rise as far as entertaining shows are concerned.
Plot twist : it was the wink that gave them more points instead of the solo
My band had one of these ramps that we used in our show it had the blockage design and everything
Make sure you link Ben Gunnarson's cam for credit purposes!
Drum major is my highschool band director lol
samuel crawford??
Ya, we love him lol
@@DrHexagon_ bro i watched the video of him being mic’d up before the 2018 finals performance and he seems like the nicest guy. you are blessed
@@gdadhd4775 he is awesome, he came into a not very good situation band wise and completely rebuilt it, we’re the riverwood band
The Bluecoats are the most innovative corps in DCI history. Go Blue!!!
I’d go as far as saying tilt changed dci forever
Yes and No
Downside Up is the first time a corp
1. Featured props on this scale
2. Wore a Uniform that was...not a Uniform
3. Featured this many speakers (okay this was technically 2015, but Downside Up did it more)
Tilt was a great show, but when you look at the history of shows. No group started using big props until Bluecoats did it in 2016. No group ventured from the standard Uniform until Bluecoats did in 2016. The only thing that didn't really follow was the trend of placing speakers everywhere.
Dude Ben Gunnerson in Butter😩
This made me high-laugh.
🤙
I got 2 years left and i am a mediocre snare player. If i where younger and American i would go for a brass instrument and follow my dream.
BLOOOOOOOO
Imo, this is the show where DCI jumped the shark and died. Now all we have left is WGI w/Brass.
😉
Thought they was gonna bust out the skateboards.
Tuba part tho
They rival Phantom for my favorite Brass sound
Not even, Madison Scouts malaguena was the turning point
There’s a part of me that will never forgive this drum corps for turning DCI into what it has become. It certainly has its audience, but there is a huge contingent of drum corps fans that would go wild if the Bluecoats showed up in their 2014 uniforms, the Cadets in maroon and gold, SCV in Aussies and so on. PR and Troopers were the closest thing to an “old school” drum corps show we had this year. And fans loved them for it. It’s remarkable how complex these productions can be but still have so little substance to them. I won’t hate on anyone for loving this stuff, but it’s just not that interesting to me. I’ve watched every year for the last 30, and 2016 on has really lost me.
I wanna see bluecoats with feather helmets again.. I wanna see just one corps bring back G bugles .. Just once a show with no electronics .. Or a show with no massive field props that limit drill..I wanna see Madison play angry again.. How about one show where the hornline doesn't endlessly dance around and what is done matches the music.. a cartwheel or tumble move is cool but doing it constantly is corny and in the end it doesn't match the music.. Same thing with this era of playing a fast set of 16th notes for a few measures.. Its cool til its done the whole show then its confusing and the effect is lost..
“No substance” what you mean is “doesn’t pander to my taste”
@@josephsheehan6079 There’s maybe a little of that, sure. I’m not afraid to admit I have some biases. It’s hard not to have some of those things after three decades of fandom. There were shows from the 70’s through the 90’s that I didn’t really care for, but it didn’t diminish my love for the activity and the art form. The winnowing away of each organization’s visual identity in the name of show design has. The constant need for individuality and ego over uniformity and corps identity is really summed up by “the wink.” Some love that, I get it. It makes me sad to see all of that long standing tradition disappear. That tradition and identity is what made up so much of the “substance” to me. It gave me something to latch onto while the activity progressed and changed with the times. This corps. This show. This one. It removed the core of what I loved so much about the drum corps activity, and tossed it aside as if it meant nothing. I’m still a little butthurt about it if I’m honest.
Same here. Each show today is no more than BD clones. Stand still during the fast moving parts, move during the whole and half notes. Oh, and throw a bit of cheese for the audience to eat up. No real feeling or in-your-face shows anymore. The wall of sound is nothing more than a chain link fence.
@@sbyrstall to be fair, BD just took the formula presented in this show and perfected it. People kind of bag on them for doing so well, but their design team and staff is totally clued into what does well competitively. 2016 Bluecoats made them change their formula in 2017. Uniforms? Gone. Hats? Gone. Drill? Gone. They fine tuned each caption to the formula presented in this show, and came up with a win. I don’t fault them for that, but I certainly don’t have to like it :)
Why did this show change DCI?
I don’t know what the video was referring to but this was the first time anyone ever wore different uniforms
Before this show everyone wore the traditional “military” type uniforms which in my opinion I like more

When the corps turned into the colorguard. Why?
Fantastic playing, transcription rhythmic notation needs a lot of work.
you dont haer the high notes that well. maybe they should pratice more smh
Too many props on the field.
The activity is changing to involve more things such as props regardless of whether we like it or not, hence the title of the video
I loved it.
Wish RUclips had a report option for boomers
This show wrecked dci in 2016
How did this change DCI?? Using electronics to bend the noise?? Seems like cheating to me.
i hate you
This is incorrect. The show responsible for the coming demise of DCI Was Star Of Indiana 93. Then they bowed out butt hurt and did Broadway 🤣😂🤣
Show that *ruined* DCI
And I hate this show for it
And not in a good way
Evidently the change was not necessarily for the good!!
Wtf did it change? DC competes to see which corps can come up with the silliest, obscure so-called 'theme'. My vote goes to the Bluecoats absurd '2023 show honouring the crappy poetry of an obscure 17th century 'free love' cuckhold and religious bigot named William Blake. Incredible stuff.
