Bro the crowds reaction to the wink was incredible! There is like a story behind it, but I don't remember it 😅. I love this show so much. Please react to more shows that are relatively newer.
Shayne O'Brien, (the soloist), did it during Prelims, which was nationally shown in Movie theaters and sent the marching world internet in a frenzy, but did not do it during Semis. So everyone was hoping that it would come back in Finals, and the reaction is from that buildup.
Something that not a lot of people know is that the camera man was holding up a sign that said "wink" on it finals night. That's why Shane laughs about it after in this finals recording.
@@AndThereWasHobbyman yeah, exactly. the unexpected prelims wink got a good reaction and some definite buzz in the theater/post-theater online responses, and then when he DIDN'T do it on semis, you could kinda hear the crowd 'awww' in a way, with shayne seemingly noticing it. so going into finals, he knew that a fair amount of people in the crowd and around the country were expecting it, so when he did it, after that brief delay after his high note....the crowd having their anticipation finally resolved (especially during such an emotionally potent moment in the corps/show history/great gig in the sky itself) became a celebrated, cathartic, iconic, transcendent moment. as an alum (05-07 mello), it's extra special because it's beautifully in line with who we are, what we're about, and our crowd-friendly, relatively whimsical approach to the activity. (a very small part of me wishes the anticipation for the wink didn't distract from the music moment at 9:49, but the wink is way too iconic to regret. i'm glad shayne waited how he did, so that the crowd's roar didn't cover up that glorious descrecendo.) i had no idea about the camera man though!!
As a current member, the design staff told us the story of it. One of the heads of show design actually got a little upset at the shayne and told him not to do it. At semis they heard the crowd’s disappointment when he didn’t wink, and then told him to do it on finals night and it turned into the DCI iconic moment it’s known as today
You know Courtney, at this point in time we’d be nearing the end of the 2020 season. But we all know why that isn’t happening this year. Thank you for the genuine reactions and excitement from past shows to help make up for it.

Fun Fact: The guy walking to his set at 3:19 was my tech and he actually ended up falling/tripping on the way down because they had just gotten new vinyl on the ramps so he couldn't slide down as easy but man managed to play it off like a champ
I was at one of their first shows in FL that season watching the drum major at the goal line with that smug ass look on his face like they were gonna win. I was like, "Bitch, you think you're gonna win!?" A minute and a half into the show I was like "FUCK, they're gonna win....and the game has changed forever."
@@ThereaalSP Its true. Everyone else is chatting waiting for the show to start, Frank Williams is 2 rows behind me not giving a shit, and I'm the only one standing up eyeballing this MFin drum major that had the balls to approach the goal line like they had already won DCI Finals in early June. Couldn't believe it till I saw it.
The creativity behind this is simply mind-blowing. That intro was EPIC. And the trumpet soloist winking at the camera after some good screams was a nice touch!
Nothing like a wailing Brassline to get the blood to percolate, then screaming Trumpets to set things to boil. Courtney, if you ever get the chance to go to a DCI Championship here in Indianapolis you need to do whatever to get here. Sitting in the Stadium hearing, seeing and feeling these performances live will blow your mind. It's almost an entire week of awesomeness. You will not regret it. I'm spoiled....I live about 25 miles from the stadium.
I saw this live in Atlanta, and four hours later when I got home my ears were still ringing it was so loud. It didn't hurt that Carolina Crown had gone on before them (Their 2016 Relentless would be a good show for you to watch as well). My ears were already ringing from their show. By now you're familiar with their horn line. I rarely expect another corps to be louder, but that night the Bluecoats were. It was a truly unforgettable performance. As for "the wink..." The DCI world championships have three rounds of competition. Two nights before this performance, the first round of the championships was broadcast live to theaters all over the country. He winked at the camera then, so when this night came, everyone in the stands was watching for it. He didn't do it right away like at the theaters so it became almost a "wait for it," moment.

I'm so happy you were able to experience this performance! I marched Bluecoats from 1995-1997 and drove for them from 2015-2017. I was one of the lucky ones who got to see these amazing performers put on this show every night for over 6 weeks! I was in the crowd during this video and was crying by the end of the show! I knew it was their year to win it all! To this day, I get full-body goosebumps throughout the entire show. Tonight would have been the first night of the World Championships, but unfortunately the 2020 season was cancelled. Hopefully we'll get back to business next summer.
Without a doubt, one of the strongest DCI wins/shows of all time! It didn’t let up...kept moving and building and it was mind blowing. It's good to know that you've become fan of DCI as well! Dci has been kind of dying out as of late, and it's in desperate need of revival. Not enough people are aware of the talent and skill that is showcased in Drum Corps!
i don't disagree, and i'm glad you love it, but for me, that section mostly just builds the anticipation up for that flamenco gloriousness at 6:54. (her reaction to noticing the new melody/style that dropped during that section was perfect.) during the 2016 season when i was frequently watching videos as the year went on, the two parts i would always check out first, to hear how they sounded on a given night, were the hit in great gig in the sky, and that fat tasty dissonant chord at 7:02.
@@jared0111 I think a big reason I love that part so much is just because the music allows the groove to set in and develop for a while. So much of marching music is written in a way to be kind of schizophrenic, wild changing in style and content every few seconds. It's a symptom of how judging in the activity works, I think. Anything that lasts more than a few seconds and the judges start commenting on "oh, well you've been doing this for too long". the guy at 3:18 still cracks me up. I think he got his foot stuck in the prop and couldn't climb up it with everyone else, so just joined there. But hey, be confident and it'll look right
I remember being there on Finals night and being in tears because of how beautiful that ballad was. I'll never forget how insane the crowd went when they won
I know the guy who did the wink. Knew him before he was famous... Shane's a nice guy. Moved from Ireland to Texas to be with his girlfriend who he met at the Cadets. I think they're married now? I can't recall. I haven't seen him in like 6 years. lol.
here is kind of long fun fact for you. The song they played at 8:35 was "Great Gig In The Sky" from the great Pink Floyd album "Dark Side of the Moon'. That song featured the vocal talent of Clare Torry who was only sixteen years old at the time. That (at the time)young woman has an amazing voice. Give it a listen if you can. She was amazing at sixteen.
This really makes me realize how amazing that show was. Just everything about it was phenomenal and watching you react for the first time was like me watching it for the first time again! Amazing!
I still love knowing that Courtney's reaction to the last 30 seconds of this show was everyone's reaction that night, because no one had seen that ending before then.
I saw this live in Nashville that year. That was the 2nd show they performed their new closer in (the 1st being the Little Rock show just a day or two earlier). It blew my mind when they pulled something completely different than what I was expecting. I have a video somewhere on my old phone where you can hear me scream "WHAT?????" when they change it up
i got to meet the 5th bass drum, Zach, super nice and humble guy. met him by sheer chance in my gym at ucf. he was in some of my favorite shows ever, 2015, -2017 bluecoats.
At the June theater broadcast, by the time the opening hit at 4:35 finished, I turned to the guy next to me and said, "That's it, that's the 2016 champs right there!" Crown hadn't even played yet. This show was so different and executed so well already, I was convinced that nobody was going to touch it. Reminded me of what Wayne Downey once said about getting to see Garfield '83 from the press box for the first time, "We can't beat this, this is new, this is different, this is exciting."
That was a great show. I am really enjoying your reactions to DCI. I'm sure you know that there is a lot of corps out there. I think what I enjoy about your reactions is that you just can't fake that level of emotion or appreciation for what these kids are doing. Thank you for another great video, Ms. Coulston.
When a "down under" girl says "y'all - you KNOW it is a good show! Seeing it live - in person was so very moving! The Blue Coats so richly deserved to win it all that year!!! They followed it up the next season very narrowly losing to the Blue Devils. GREAT SHOW!!!!!
I've seen a LOT of great shows in my life, but seeing this in person was on a whole different level. Best writing to date in DCI, the staff did amazing with this and as hard as it was the kids really pulled it off. NOT easy to sync all these moving pieces.
There’s still a part of me that’s hanging on to the “old way” with Drum Corps. One change I do like is how more and more corps are going without shakos. It really lets the corps members’ personalities shine. I’m slowly embracing the changes. It’s still something I love to follow, and hope it makes a triumphant return next year.
One thing I think you should try and pay attention to in your next DCI video is the sight difference in marching technique between the horn lines and the drum lines. Specifically with when they are marching to the side. The horn line will do something called a slide where they turn their hips and basically march forward. Alternatively The drum line will do something called Crabbing which is more of the drum line marchers keeping their hips pointing forward (for their drums) and instead of marching forward they just cross their legs to move to the aide
I've been watching drum corps since the '70s, and used to be a pretty good trumpet player myself, and that show is easily in my all-time top 5, and possibly number 1 (depending on my mood). Admittedly, the fact that they played Pink Floyd's "Great Gig in the Sky" gave them a boost in my ratings.
@Courtney Coulston I was hoping you would notice that @7:10 there is a point where you hear music from the brassline, but none of them have the instrument on their face at that time. Chew on that for a bit. lol
Babylon’s ballad was so damn good it kind of earned the championship on its own. Lol. But yeah.... This Bloo show is definitely the highlight of modern shows for me
6:32 they didnt show it in this recording but I'm pretty sure that this was the performance where some dude tripped over the first ramp. F to pay respects
That was semis. They had many issues in semis, ie mics not working, people tripping. It was a hot mess. Then again BD had much the same in semis as well. Only Crown killed it in semis
@@nhpowell12 as an avid Crown fan who owns waaay too much merch, I would like to see any crown shows because it doesnt seem like she has watched any of those, but the ones I listed would be my personal picks for showing someone what Crown is about.

This show was a game changer in some ways. The uniforms, the use of the props, and of course it led to their first DCI Championship.

Courtney: “On the beat hunty” Me: that kinda what they’re going for... also me: she’s got a point tho
I haven't seen him in like 6 years. lol.
im so glad she did a reaction to this show bruh , it had such a special place in my heart .
seeing your genuine reaction to my literal favorite show of all time literally made me cry bro this is such a sweet video
12:05 -When the teacher gives no homework over break.
You should watch their next year’s show 2017 :)))
yeeeeeees
the trombone solo is a big bop
sofia the music selection is just a bop I love it
sofia whole show is a bop imo
Kenneth Schechter I agree but I can't find their competition video with good views and everything :(
here is kind of long fun fact for you.
Amazing!
Bluecoats are my favorite because they’re innovative. Love this show!
it's bluecoats*
I still love knowing that Courtney's reaction to the last 30 seconds of this show was everyone's reaction that night, because no one had seen that ending before then.
I saw this live in Nashville that year. That was the 2nd show they performed their new closer in (the 1st being the Little Rock show just a day or two earlier). It blew my mind when they pulled something completely different than what I was expecting. I have a video somewhere on my old phone where you can hear me scream "WHAT?????" when they change it up
I never knew this existed! Thanks so much for exposing me to this it's so amazing😍
It was insane how that first group that entered all moved like dancers but they were not the color guard. I was shocked as much as you Courtney!
i got to meet the 5th bass drum, Zach, super nice and humble guy. met him by sheer chance in my gym at ucf. he was in some of my favorite shows ever, 2015, -2017 bluecoats.
Coulston.
Also you’ll probably see folks talking about ben gunnerson, he has a headcam out but I believe he was the first trumpet solo near the beginning
I requested this but it wasn’t guaranteed, so thank you to whoever did this guaranteed request!😁
woop woop!!😊
My all time favorite show. I watch or almost everyday in the summer. Everything about this show is rope
I love how bluecoats use bass trombone in their shows lately
This show made me proud that we had a professional grade Drum Corps from my home state of Ohio. The Trumpet soloist's wink made everyone cheer.
When a "down under" girl says "y'all - you KNOW it is a good show! Seeing it live - in person was so very moving! The Blue Coats so richly deserved to win it all that year!!! They followed it up the next season very narrowly losing to the Blue Devils. GREAT SHOW!!!!!
Only DCI finals I’ve ever been to, what an amazing performance to see live. The crowd was deafening after their show.
I've seen a LOT of great shows in my life, but seeing this in person was on a whole different level. Best writing to date in DCI, the staff did amazing with this and as hard as it was the kids really pulled it off. NOT easy to sync all these moving pieces.
This show is my favorite one of theirs. I watch this show often since that year. Their Beatles show is pretty awesome also.
You should also check out Bluecoats 2019
Flo Marching - meet your next studio analyst!
Admittedly, the fact that they played Pink Floyd's "Great Gig in the Sky" gave them a boost in my ratings.
their treatment of it was PERFECT, i love it so much. this is a great pick for your top 5!! who are the others if ya don't mind me asking?
@@jared0111 I don't mind you asking, but it's really hard to decide -- including separating great moments from great complete shows. :)
Love this show! It was absolutely game changing!
I love this show so much so glad they got 1st place
Brooo this was nuts to see live
YOOOOO the drum major is Samuel Crawford hes now my marching band director at my high school lmao
We really need a Bluecoats 2010 reaction. The first time the corps medaled in history and such a great use of electronics 2 years into their usage
SO happy they finally changed the rules to allow trombones in. They add so much to the color of the sound!
All of these hits that wasn't freaking given to me in my feed I'm gonna sue youtube ok.
Love this, thank you again Courtney
in my top five forever shows. I will never ever ;stop enjoying it. Blooooooooooo
Fun fact, coats sold those ramps after the show, you could buy them for about $1000 usd a piece
6:36 when she says "whoooo" it's the same note as the next trumpet soloist...
6:36 haha I like how she woooed in tune at the perfect time lol
@Courtney Coulston I was hoping you would notice that @7:10 there is a point where you hear music from the brassline, but none of them have the instrument on their face at that time.
Chew on that for a bit. lol
Yayyy it’s here!!!
this hands down is by far the best modern day drum corps show there is, babylon is very good, but downside up is great.
Babylon’s ballad was so damn good it kind of earned the championship on its own. Lol.
But yeah.... This Bloo show is definitely the highlight of modern shows for me
you should see vandegrift, Hebron, or Ronald Reagan high school band 2019 bc the kids are as young as 14 and they’re so good 😔✋🏼
I actually submitted a certain head-cam of this show! (I submitted the Snare Head-Cam of the Victory Run)
"Loved the wink" yes, so did absolutely everyone :D at one semi finals he didn't just to build up anticipation lmaooo
If you haven't already, Bluecoats 2014 is a must watch and 2015 is another amazing one too
This is the show you wanna have those chills
I had been waiting for this video yay!!🙂
My favorite show!! 😍😍
There is a "Behind the show" video about this show and others from Drum Corps International. If you want to learn more, check it out
The crowd is yelling "BLUUUUUUUUUUUE"" when the Blue Coats are announced or when they do something spectacularly !!!
Only Crown killed it in semis
someone do a guaranteed request for bloo 2010 😳
Also Bloo 2018, Crown 2012, 2013, and 2015. Santa Clara 2014 would also be great. "Old school" one that would be cool is 2003 Cavies
Zach every single one
@@AndThereWasHobbyman Really, no crown 14 and 16
@@nhpowell12 as an avid Crown fan who owns waaay too much merch, I would like to see any crown shows because it doesnt seem like she has watched any of those, but the ones I listed would be my personal picks for showing someone what Crown is about.
You should react to on field battery cams of this show. They’re really good (and funny)
I have to say, Bluecoats lately have had the shows that just make you jealous that you're not performing with them.....Jagged Line especially. Just looks like such a fun show to march that i'm like....damnit i wanna be young again, lol. So I agree with you should see the 2017 show.
And of course here's a few more:
Carolina Crown: Rachstar, E=C^2 ( i know you're going to but still mentioning it :)
The Cavaliers: XtraordinarY, Secret Society (seriously will blow your mind)
The Cadets: Between Angels and Demons, 12.25
The Bluedevils: The Beat My Heart Skipped
Madison Scouts: New York Morning
Santa Clara Vanguard: Les Miserable
Phantom Regiment: Swan Lake, Triumphant Journey
hahaha i marched there 05-07 and i FEEL YOU on that. so much fun, every year! we don't have very similar tastes in drum corps shows other than your bloo sentiments, but i will say, bd 2011 is probably my favorite show of theirs of the 2010's. so many MELODIES, very welcome from them. pretty cool that they used the first hit from 2011 as a space chord tuning sequence in 2019. they love taking shows that didn't win and squeezing them into shows that eventually do!
@@jared0111 i'd list just about every show but can't flood with too many at once, lol. those are just ones, judging by her other reactions, that i think she'll really appreciate for various reasons, also not including ones she's already done. My personal taste are usually the ones that hit me in the feels, so i guess i do gravitate towards PR more often than not, or just ones that blow my mind.
We have to get her to Indy finals week. She will absolutely love it 😊❤️
Gotta do the Carolina Crown 2013 show where they won their first gold. That place went about as nuts as the Bluecoats winning finally.
Aw yeah, one of my favorite shows of all time!
You should watch their POV. Some of them have uploaded videos from their perspective of this show. I believe one of the soloists and a drum line member posted one on RUclips
Bruh 2016 finals was my first time seeing DCI and bruh loved it ever since
I enjoyed crown and scv the most that year but I liked all the shows at finals that year.
Hunter Braun Crown was so freakin good I honestly thought that they should’ve gotten 3rd that year
@@AlexWells02 crown did get bronze and scv got 4th
Hunter Braun oh wait i actually meant 2nd place sorry about that 😅
