So the story behind this:
At DCI finals everyone is competing for first place, then the scores are announced, then whoever gets first place gets to perform their show again, hence the "victory run". That's why they are all wearing gopros and theres a film crew on the field since they arent being judged for this.
I love this camera view because it really helps you understand that each player down there is a person in a world of their own just living their life.
This show beat Bluecoats by .083 points, one of the closest ending scores in DCI. Both performances were amazing in the end.

This show is called 'Ghostlight,' which is a small light left on the stages of theaters overnight, while the theater is empty and unoccupied. Practically speaking, it's meant to be a safety precaution in case anyone were working overnight, but there are many stories as to why this tradition exists. It is said that every theater has its share of spirits, and that the ghostlight lets them see on stage, allowing them to dance, sing, perform.
My point is: I hope drum corps finds its way back to the stage, when the time is right. Until then, thanks for helping us keep the light on!

this was one of my favorite BD shows in a while. If someone can find a Cadets 12.25 full show it'd make a great show to watch just before the holidays :)
I am a traditionalist, usually when it comes to DCI (marched in early '90's), however, THIS was one of the most incredible shows I have ever seen!
I'm a grown man of 58 years and I get all emotional at every drum corps show to this day. I wanted to march snare so bad I swear I could feel actual physical pain in my chest. In my rural town there was absolutely no opportunity to learn how back in those pre-internet days.
2019 was amazing for dci, so many amazing shows in one season.
I'm so glad that I got to see this show live, it was my introduction into DCI as a freshman and I've been obsessed ever since.
Amazing pride, musicianship, guard. Just fills you with awe with what these wonderful young people can accomplish. BRAVO!!!!
Quick explanation of the brass section in these DCI groups. Traditionally the trumpets sit at the highest voice, The Blue Devils are known for their insane trumpet players, my band director used to march for them. They are the ones hitting the screaming notes, followed by the mellophones which are essentially a marching instrument in the same voice as a French horn. Then there are the baritones and euphoniums which have the same voice as a trombone. Finally the large shoulder mounted horns are Contras or Contrabass Tubas. The wrap-around horn that was used was a sousaphone, also in the voicing of a tuba.
The person screaming in the beginning is one of my visual instructors kevin teak. him and another member were two people i looked up too when i wanted to join dci, sadly my marching days are over and im now in college football

6:19 It's a sousaphone, commonly mistaken for a tuba, but has different characteristics. Warning, don't go down this rabbit hole exploring. You might get tangled up in all the different types of tubas and how they came about. Sousaphone, helicon, saxhorn, euphoniums, bass tuba, contrabass tuba, the monstrous subcontrabass tuba....it becomes a mess.
Sousa’s are not very fun to march or play in at all I can’t stand them. I come back from a summer of Drum Corps then have to play the Sousa instead of contras. Sorry for that rant I just felt the need to express my hate for them

The blue Devils are amazing!!! They are what my band director showed us when we were first getting started. It was super impressive and while I don't think we are quite to their level it certainly helped make us want to try a lot harder to get to that level.

Of course the one year I'm not able to go in person, this show and so many other great ones are performed! I only got to see their prelims run during the cinema show, and I was absolutely blown away by them!
Seeing this live gave me a whole new perspective in dci. Completely deserved to win.
Blue Devils design staff knocked it for six (cricket reference for you Courtney) with this show! The show was based around the theatre and the tradition of leaving a light on all the time to assuage the spirits of the theatre... the "Ghostlight" hence the name. I absolutely adore this show.

Blue Devils are local to me and they're just fantastic. I mostly interacted with their Winterguard team in the early-mid 90's when I was in high school. Them and San Jose Raiders (also near me, but a little further south) would often go back and forth between winning their division in the WGI championships in Dayton, OH back then. Sadly, it's hard to find any of the 90's performances on RUclips. There's one video of the Raiders' awesome Good Morning Vietnam routine, but the video quality is so bad you can't hardly see anything. Man, being part of the colorguard (rifle line specifically) gave me such great memories.
You are going to have so much fun at Finals! This was one of my favorite live performances to watch. Especially the slow section! #DOITUPDEVILS
I saw them in person and took my wife to her first drum corps show. Oh were the tears flowing 😢 She is from the UK, so this was a first for her. I am an old guy and used to March against them in the 1980s and they were as great then as they were great now minus violins, guitars, and sound systems. I personally know all of the work that goes into a 14 minute show. It's months of work and selecting the best talent to make such a unbelievable show. I love your videos.

You should check out the Old Guard fife and drum corps. Almost all of those guys in there drumline did dci and they had a guy that did dci at 14 years old
You should check out Blue Devils 1994 My Spanish Heart. Back from the days before speakers and electronics. The videos do not compare to being there. I loved following by siblings during the summer and seeing the shows.
Just an FYI:
Usually, the hype isn't as vocal as it is in that video, because it isn't considered professional. However, this is a victory run, meaning that the Blue Devils already won the DCI World Championships, and this is their victory run, or encore. As you could probably tell, the energy is bursting at the seams, so celebration and hype is acceptable.

I wonder how many GoPros they had to use to shoot this. Editing this must have taken a while!! That "huge instrument" is called a Sousaphone. It's basically a marching Tuba. They wrap around the player's body so they are easier to carry and actually aren't as heavy as they look. Most high school and college marching bands use them instead of tubas, but DCI usually doesn't, so it's unusual to see one in one of these shows. And add the violin and you've got an interesting combination.
Hi Courtney! Loved the 1995 Madison Scouts and 1989 Santa Clara Vanguard shows! However, I think the most heartachingly beautiful show (from a corps I hate, by the way), is the Garfield Cadets' 1987 show, "Appalachian Spring." They incorporated their retreat (exit from the field) within the show, which was super-original. If you were touched by Vanguard's "Phantom of the Opera," you'll absolutely break down watching Cadets' 1987 "Appalachian Spring!"
You should totally react to Phantom Regiment 2003 (Harmonic Journey). They have so many good shows (1996, 2003, 2007, 2008, and 2011 to name a few) but the closer of 2003 sets it apart. Arguably one the of the best shows ever musically imo.
Nobody throws it down quite like the Devils. My favorite corps for 25 years.

I liked both Bluecoats and Blue Devils that year. Bluecoats was the better show imo but both great. I recommend time traveling back to 2005, Cadets. The zone. The show that got me into DCI

I know you've been doing a lot of DCI. Here is something else that is very uniquely American. Specifically Philadelphia. Every New Year's Day, Philadelphia hosts the Mummer's Parade.
The favorite division in the parade is called the String Bands. They march up Broad Street from South Philadelphia to Center City, entertaining the city along the way. Typically there are about 15 bands performing.

Considering you've seen a lot of the amazing modern shows, I'd like to throw Cadets 2005 as a recommendation
There’s a chance that because of the virus, DCI will go bankrupt if the 2021 season doesn’t happen. The shows are so expensive, and the planning and spending of money is done before the season begins, so many corps are very close to bankruptcy already. For extra revenue, many corps also required their members to reaudition and pay their fees for auditioning again. There are many battles going on to keep DCI alive.. let’s hope it happens :(
You know it really is a big deal when another corps wins DCI cuz that means for one year a corps beat this and that's gotta be extremely difficult lol BD is just something else man 🙌
You wanna see some great bands? Check it she HBCUs (historically black colleges and universities) like Prairie View A&M, NC A&T, Jackson St., Grambling St., and Bethune-Cookman.

So Courtney check it out, BD won 2019. What you are watching is a victory Encore performance after they found out that they won. So a lot of the screaming on the field is not quite what actually goes on in a competitive competition however imagine if you just one you would probably be screaming too. I know I did!
