Over the past decade, Carolina Crown's brass has finished no lower than second sans one season (2010), winning the Jim Ott Award for Best Brass Performance seven times in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2019.
Crown has therefore earned the affectionate nickname "God's Hornline" to describe the godly-level playing attained by these supremely talented musicians.
Enjoy these excerpts of brass impacts and warm ups that substantiate this nickname. Go Crown! Cannot wait for the 2021 DCI Summer Tour. - Наука
i'm crying that i didn't see this sooner
it's okay man welcome to the dci rabbit hole we have _lots_ of cake recipes
I'm a big fan of your videos !! Could you please do a vid on 6:27-6:57
Gorge Collier in the wild? 👀
The overtones created in the 2017 show still give me chills. You hear notes that aren’t even there simply because it’s so clean.
Asguardian chord lol
I am confused on that. How do they do that? It's incredible!
@@RasAlXander So overtones are created because of tuning. In a perfect fifth example, like a C and a G, if it's tuned correctly, you hear an E for the C major chord even if an E isn't being played if everyone's in tune together and it's correct. It's really impressive and hard to do!
I just heared it while reading this comment and my mine just blown away...
😂
When I joined Crown in 03 I honestly didnt know what to expect with Matt Harloff. I can tell you by the end of that season (his first season) there, we all knew Crown would get to this level in the years to come.
I miss those milkman uniforms.
David Eanes they were very stretchy. Lol
I notice you comment this on multiple videos
Im trying to join crown when i get eligible so that’s really cool to hear from an alum such as yourself!
@@E-FederalBureauofInvestigation wish I could! But I'm in Indiana. And probably nowhere near good enough haha
Matt: You've got more air than that.
God: No my son, they don't.
Hornline: Hold my beer
Thusly, the creation of God's Hornline.
For any wondering, it is at 4:52
Bro was like YOU UNDERESTIMATE MY POWER
True that
Hysterical and Perfect!
Carolina Brown brass section: plays anything
People 10 blocks away: ow
Our high school band was on the other side of the school turned opposite of the field almost a 1/2 mile away and you could still hear them over the band on the field. Crown is a great group with the best horn line I've ever heard
@@jimwilson6305 for real they're so good
That chord change at 5:53 had me levitating for about 5 seconds. Soul snatching.
Felt my conscious slip from my being
I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one! Came to the comments just to see if anyone else pointed out that specific change 😍
@DECLAN DOUGAN Crown is Star reborn. I remember hating that show in 93, but that was because I just wasn't ready for it. Now, it's one of my all time favorites.
My skin crawled off.....it sounds epic
The convention center has the best rings in the world
I’m glad DCI got it right in 2013 because 2:20 is exactly how a 20/20 Brass score is supposed to sound 🤤
That entire hit/segment is nothing more than soul-extracting bliss!!! I still have trouble determining whether to cry out smile...so I do both.
Power, tone quality, and technical execution. Even most Jim Ott hornlines have one of those weaker than the other two. Crown 2013 is top 5 of all time in all 3.
Yes..it's me again. I used to think that volume is a interger scale of 1 to 10. CC rewrote it by adding, at a discernable and quantifiable amount, two decimal positions. This is the proof!
Exactly!!!
2021 agenda: don't buy tickets to shows, but follow Crown in parking lots only. :)
Well boy do I have some news for you :(
@@karlmarx2590 Did something happen? What did I miss?
@@crestonlukemartin9271 I don't think dci is allowing public lots this year
I love the conductor. He just gives so much energy.
I would get bullied for that at my school😂 people made fun of me for showing any emotion in my conducting it was kinda sad😭
@@fryhd940 Then, you get the brass section and tell them to play as long as they can. Until the bullies go crying and claim they are being bullied.
The guy couldnt write real music for real corps if his life depended on it. Hes a ego maniac and it shows
@@Mrtellitlikeitis bro what? Matt is one of the best drum corps brass instructors in history
@@Mrtellitlikeitis mald
6:28 when that girl on the left mouthed "Holy shit" I felt that
@Albi what are you talking about and how is it related to drum corps?
@Ňaraŋĵa no
It was probably said out loud she just couldn’t be heard
Our old director had us do Crown warmups, and one of those was the Around the Circle like Harloff does, and I got to stand in the middle one day; literally almost cried right there because it was so cool. I feel that
Anyone who has played a horn of any kind will know just how absolutely nuts this video is! It’s a dream to see them even just for warmups! Dissonant to a FFF power chord! My lawd 🤤🤤🤤
I dont know the first thing about playing horns and that video still looks like absolute insanity
Bro I always come back to these at 2-4am. I hear up at the beauty they are and to make.
Triple toungeing that fast on a tuba is nuts. These people are the best of the best of the best.
@@michaelmann831 Takes practice man, start slow, and slowly work your way to faster tempos, you can get there with hard practice I promise. Triple tonguing was an audition requirement though when I auditioned a few years ago
@@justynrobertson8767 I feel I should mention that you shouldn't neglect other articulation techniques while learning double/triple tonguing! I was learning triple tonguing a couple years ago, and didn't practice double over the months I had cleaning it up, so I had to effectively relearn it lol
5:07 was one of the cleanest entrances😍
Soul snatching. Pun intended.
"Come on you got more air than that" was still somehow not preparation enough
I miss band so much. I miss just performing with a group. The electricity of many becoming one. The whole being greater than the sum of the parts.
I feel you. I miss it too.
A Royal Gestalt
Here before this is the new hammer drop 😤
such an underrated video, this video is literally GOLD
It’s Carolina Crown not Carolina Gold
Literally brass.
There's two jokes here, and I like it
hey looks its me.
@@ssundee.skater1746 yes i am you and you are me.
7 out 11 times they won High Brass. Dominance, just like SCV in percussion the last 7 seasons.
And like Guard with Boston Crusaders!
@@steffeny123 fun fact, the current guard designer was crowns original one !
@@frankcabrito7984 BAC is basically the baby of Cadets and Crown and it shows
"You've got more air than that." Matt Harloff is a god
Cant forget him going “BONZAAAAAAAAAAI” in the 2017 clip
That drop in dynamics at 2:44 you know something AMAZING is coming🔥
Not sure how much louder they could've gotten, but I'd have listened until my ears bled.
My heart dropped at the absolutely surgical precision of that moment. “Blow your lungs out until I tell you to whisper and then wake God up.”

6:12 is really satisfying in a hard to explain way. The mf fast moving lines to the sudden FF wall of sound I always expect to see like big breaths from the ensemble but its just an effortless change between dynamics and power.
That low brass resolve at 6:36... Goosebumps.
Damn near cried, such an amazing arrangement
the amount of times I have watched this video is alarming to my therapist
Its because you aren't sharing.
I don't know much about music, but I am a U.S Army Veteran and I must say their movements are mesmerizing.
Thank you for your service
Thank you for your service to this amazing nation!
Thank you for your service!
5:07 holy fuck, I've never had such a powerful eargasm at a horn entrance before
Love that you started with “Eargasm” first. That was awesome to experience. Sorry for the shaking. Was my first time seeing them live. GO CROWN!!!
That sound can really trigger fight or flight.
I'm listening to this on a desktop computer with over-ear headphones. My computer volume, youtube volume, and speaker volume are maxed out, but I need MORE!!!!!! I can't FEEL the low brass sound waves pushing against my chest as I would in person. Honestly, if I go deaf someday from listening to horn lines at full volume, I would only be sad because I couldn't hear any more raw POWER! I may be abusing my ears, but this is healing my soul. :)
Wtf
nothing beats a live drum corps performance
The cutoffs are clean and sharp it’s INSANE to think how much they practice
Gods horn line has godly cutoffs, what else can I say?
This is one of those things where you can't help but smile at it and feel pumped inside. And those mello sections holly crap!
This video made me cry a bunch of times. The precision and power is amazing. You can tell every player WANTS to be there and is doing their best. Badass!!!
Oh cmon. Get some help
YIKES! Having to stop watching this whilst at work I'm choking on tears with the power behind these clips! One to watch at home with good headphones for sure!
7:14 was absolutely incredible. My pupils dilated. Insane tones spread across a huge range. CC is just amazing. What talent.
Good lord that Eb (Sus) chord in the 2017 line.... That brings me to tears.
The reaction of the kid in the black shirt at 3:48 onwards is precious.
Hey he likes to look can't blame him
@@loganjohnson8010 lol
I think he was just attracted to her
@@Vinny52300 nah if you've ever experienced a horn line for the first time in person you can't stop the stupid grin on your face.
@@TehEvilTrafficCone The boy looks like he likes a woman in control!😂
But, I know what your talking about.
I love matt harloffs enthusiasm when hes conducting its amazing to watch
Nearby universities reportedly studying Carolina crown horn line after audience members start fucking levitating
I miss drum corps so much it brings me to tears listening to amazing lines like this. My drum corps marching career ended in 1997 as I aged out with Madison Scouts and it was bar none the best times of my life. Thank you DCI, forever.
Fantastic! The Brass Director is key to your success, I hope you don't take him for granted.
Hes also a detriment
I took my kids to the 2013 show in Omaha. The Blue Devils were there that night as well, so they went last. After the Crown performance, I turned to my daughter and said," you just witnessed this year's Grand Champion!" For the encore, Crown and Blue Devils horn lines paid tribute to Jim Ott. Still chokes me up to this day.
Another reason to love Matt Harloff (as if we needed more reasons to love him) :
5:35 - Those Mello triplet run into the big hit is such a classic old school DCI move. Gotta love it when his Star days make an appearance.
2017 had the best tuning sequence hands down.
Oh definitely! But 2014 sounded so majestic too!
Agreed
Mmmm 2015
2012 and 2016 are my favs, medea and common man just hit different
Thank you Andrew for your Crown compilations. Really great work, and it's nice to have everything in one place to enjoy.
Really looking forward to a potential 2021 season and seeing Crown in NC.
I Love it Man. I Love the quality sound of Brass Impacts. I love the way he directs. He seems like an awesome Instructor. God Bless the poster of this video. Great post.
Breath taking... I appreciated brass instruments before, but now I have a whole new love for them, thank you Matt Harloff
When the cutoffs are so clean you think your audio is actually cutting out
The dynamics and note changes from 2:45 are so perfect and smooth, I just can't.
Every single one of these lines was incredible. And I love the subtle variations in sound over the years, from the ultimate clarity and tonal purity of 2013, to the dark metallic sound of 2015, to the pipe organ power of 2017
my band director works with SCV and he even admires Carolina Crown's Hornline. such a talented group of musicians with a talented director.
5:02 bruhhh the camera shakes the the hit😍
That build up to 6:22 sheeeeesh that hit was brilliant, on point.
I must’ve watched this video 30 times. Amazing compilation for an amazing corps, outstanding job!
Chills...always chills
OMG 2013!!! Chills! The chords of Thus Spake Zarathustra are awesome with an astounding brass line. Can't. Be. Topped. Ever.
Am indonesian ex drum corps member..now im 26yo ...was a trumpet player...back in my old days..listening to this always brings me chills..still feel the hype..especialy this corps ...im a huge fan..
At 6:27 when the young man in the lower left corner cracks up when the director yells Bonzai! My second favorite part of this video.
I keep finding myself coming back to this video. I love it.
Chills and tears at the same time.
That 2013 one does deserve a 20, the chords are classic and a bit dissonant at times, it fits perfect with these absolute brass players
I can see them playing at the rapture
I literally cried man. So beautiful
I'm a bari player but god damn those mello's at 6:21 know how to put the cherry on top of a chord
Those over tones from It Is make me tear up. Too beautiful.
Love the Crown. My kids were at East Lincoln. Crown reminds me our kids were always taught to play like them. Nice full sound. Seldom very seldom they did not win music. Had great directors that taught music and playing style and dynamics
I don't even know his name -but I love that directors passion and enthusiasm. He gets every ounce of awesomeness out of them. he inspires me
Matt harloff, great guy.
I have so many goosebumps that I officially feel like I am outside my body and living on another plane of existence
I love how Linda gets into it! Clearly the best drum major of that year along with the best show!
The epic smiles this produces. I have never heard such a amazing sound in my oufe
Outstanding Brass one and all. You will remember these days your whole life. I have remained a fan, in corps from the mid 60s untill age-out in the early 70s.
6:22 and the mellophones are sooooo good
I need a new pair of pants now
Goosebumps. Everytime
You could tell that they were going to win in 2013 just by watching and listening to them in 2012. That closer was insane, they played louder than anyone else even while running around doing that 3D Cube
I've listened to many of their performances. They sound like an orchestra with the brass
Look, I love most of Crown’s hits, but 2016 was just on another level. I still think that 2016 Crown is one of the greatest hornlines to exist.
I played French horn for many years, nothing better than getting a piece with an incredibly difficult run and hitting it perfectlly at the top of the range of the horn with enough air left over for the sustained note and having the presence of mind not to scream "YES!!!" through the horn, because you got every lipped note right.
Watching this for first time during winter and i’m 30 years away from my marching career. The depth of sound makes the old days pedestrian…and that’s what I want: progress and development to the art!
“BONZAI!” At 6:26 always gets me
The only hornline in 51 years of following drum corps that brings me to tears every time.
God this is one of the best videos I've ever seen on RUclips
I come back to this video every now and then when I need to stretch my jaw
You don’t understand the amount of chills I got listening to this
Their attacks and releases are phenomenal! So strong and clean….consistently.
That director jumping around...You know he is doing EXACTLY what he was created to do. Man I miss that time in life, being in low brass.
2013s horn line was something else man. Hearing them in person was unreal. You had to be there.
Getting that good of a score and still getting second is crazy, 2014 was such an insane year
These were so beautiful I genuinely started to get emotional 😭
I cant believe the sound . Its awesome.
Often, I miss the 1960's era age of drum corps, there was so many units, my brother and I played with the Kenosha, WI Kingsmen
for many years ! Being in drum corps back then was for us a vacation, back then family's were big and not many vacations.
But Drum Corps ! WOW ! We were gone in the summer almost every weekend. Nice Horn Line !!!!
My man directing in the 03 jersey....... HYPE is a understatement. I love it.....
2019 is still a power flex hitting the hardest
The best thing about watching these is seeing the bald guy get so incredibly into it! You can tell he truly loves what he does. His passion is practically palpable.
A trumpet I March open class with went on to March for Crown . Another marched with BD (1930) dude went undefeated , had a solo , and scored the 4th highest score of all time . Shits crazy to think about
1:13 The last chord and his conducting was like a victory chord to me
Thank you.
This dude got me! He threw some "gospel" chords in there. I'm dead 💕😁💀
I always loved the 2013 one because it's the space theme I remember hearing as a kid, and they nailed it.
Incredible Brass work!!! Coming from a drummer lol, seriously soooo good!!!! The new Blue Devils!!!
Chills . Tears , love .
😮 i was there in 2014. First time ever seeing marching band in my 34 years of life. It was amazing and i learned to love this stuff that day.
Really hope I get the chance to see this core before I kick the bucket!!!
