This book was harder that 2013 by a good margin from what I’ve heard talking to people who marched both years (I know a guy who marched from 2010-2014) and he said 2012 was by far the hardest
2012-2017 will go down as the best years of crown brass. The 2017 show writing was not showcasing the best of crown brass but their great moments were just as good as 2012 and 2013.
@@ajpmalloy In some ways, Crown is a continuation of Star's brass legacy. Matt Harloff is a Star alum and uses a lot of what he learned there in his brass instruction. Star's influence is massive, it rubbed off on Crown and it really shows.
Unfortunately it's like Cadets....if you can't perfect it, ensure it's clean, and beat BD, it won't win (and this is coming from someone who marched Cadets 99 and 2000).
Simply an amazing show. The brass is ON POINT and the music showcases the raw talent of the entire group. And this choreography is absolutely INSANE. I don't think I have ever seen a colorguard this precise and crisp, and I love the way the hornline and colorgaurd interact with each other.
I would love to talk to former Crown Members who marched in this show. The level of physical demand seems insane, and based on a couple of stories I've read, the tour/rehearsal schedule for that year was wild.
6:25 If memory serves, I think this is the only moment where Michael Klesch wrote an ensemble moment where the lead trumpet plays something above a high D. I've heard that Klesch writes "Trumpet 1 books, not Lead Trumpet books." and I can definitely understand why. This is probably the only true "screamer trumpet" moment within Crown's history as DCI's greatest brassline, and that says something about Klesch's confidence in the lead's ability to deliver on that top split that year.
I’ve never followed Crown’s trumpet books that close. Are their ever screamers/upper leads in Crown’s hornline or is it all Trumpet 1? Now that you mention it, I don’t remember much stuff above a D or so in their books ever (maybe an F on a Concert Eb chord, but even then, perhaps it’s an overtone I hear).
Actually in 2009 Crown had a screamer trumpet at the end of the “Puck One” section of the show (around the part where the guard girl pushed the drum major off the podium). But you’re definitely right Klesch definitely prefers a well rounded orchestral type of brass arranging. Compared to the blue devils have a lot of jazz of jazz adjacent arranging which calls for screamers
This show should have been the Crown's first Gold Medal. To this day, THIS is my favorite drum corp show ever with the exception of the 1988 MALAGUENA show with the Madison Scouts.
DCI really made a massive statement by awarding this show second place. It was by far the most demanding show that year, had an insane level of execution and crowds adored it. Apparently those are things DCI doesnt value…
If only the timing was a tiny bit better on those impacts it would have been perfect. Not complaining tho timing across the entire field would be a nightmare for anyone else
There's so much to appreciate in this show in regards to musical and visual demand on top of the amazing design, but something I rarely see mentioned are those insane stabs at 7:06-7:17 Doing stabs like that with that kind of space and a sparse texture musically is such a risk and they absolutely nailed it.
This is incredible. This is superb. I missed championship week that year. My loss. Crown here is Awesome. They have it all--drill, GE, Guard, Brass, Percussion, Pit, difficulty, audience holding its breath--show moves ( minus 300 props and stages thank you very much) This is HOT. Go CROWN!
Still the hardest show ever performed. I will fight anyone who says otherwise. Physical demand, musical demand, and environmental demand (especially on the ballad) like nothing else ever seen on a football field.

Combine one of Klesch’s best books with one of Harloff’s best hornlines and you get this. And that’s to say absolutely nothing about the velocity of the drill, which would stand out in any era.
Dude ikr, that full ensemble trill into that following hold is unbelievable, one of the single most incredible hornline moments in all of dci history imo

The chord progressions/resolutions after the trill legitimately changed my life. I never experienced sounds so pure. I will remember those hits for the rest of my life.
In my opinion the only reason 2013's hornline scored higher was because the sound was just slightly, more focused and sharp. This is my favorite crown show though
2012: the year Crown was well and truly screwed. When DCI decided that a show with a kazoo in the pit was superior to this, it was quite obvious where the activity was headed artistically and competitively.
