Crown 2012 mello section leader here! I'm going to attempt to clarify a few things you mentioned as well as adding a few more fun facts from personal experience. This show always gets my blood pumping (and makes me tired!) •The source music was originally written for Eb horns, and when the brass team was writing the music, they toyed with the idea of working with Yamaha to make custom Eb mellophones for the season. •The mello theme that happens twice was something that we "watched the drum major" (HEAVY QUOTES) but basically we ended up practicing it over and over and over again with our eyes closed until we could feel each other consistently. The drum major was there to check in for us at the end to realign with the rest of the ensemble. •We used to do "pop quizzes" during brass block which meant full runs of the opener. We'd be working on any other part of the show and we'd hear "pop quiz for water" from the box. •At finals, there was a phone ringing sound during the announcement which people thought was a fun addition, but it turns out Michael Boo's phone wasn't silenced and it happened to go off at the wrong time! •The end of the front ensemble feature that lines up with the rifle tosses was not planned by the staff. The front ensemble section leader planned it out with the guard and just... did it one day, and the staff kept it. •I can STILL you every single note from Fanfare for the Common Man, including where I was in the chord, how many cents I had to adjust my pitch to be in tune, and alternate fingerings we used. •The design team rewrote the drill going into the 3D rotating cube so that all of us had to learn new spots for the same move, but because the drill didn't look different, we spent an entire block practicing it OVER and OVER and OVER so that it looked just as clean as the night before, even though it was all new.
Any tips for preparing for Crown? I know they aren't the exact same organization as they were a decdade ago but still, any advice helps. I marched trumpet at Surf in 19 and that was a blast, was contracted for 20 but sadly we all know what happened in 20. I was in the audition process on trumpet 3 for Crown this season but I was so unprepared because it had been since early spring of 20 since I actually marched, especially because I was drum major at my high school in 20-21. I had I had to drop the audition and focus on school, going from a virtual junior and senior year made freshman year of college a bit of a rough transition. I want to audition again either this upcoming season or next (I'm a horn player so im thinking of making the switch to mello btw) .2012 is one of the best productions ever put on the field, if not the best, and my favorite show. The style of show that Crown had from 08 to 17 was unmatched in entertainment value imo.
as a concert musician i have always felt that crown was heavy on chordal tuning, especially through alternate fingerings. greatness doesn't just happen people!! that corps really does do it better than anyone else, year in and year out.
My knees still hurt from this show 😂 But y’all were right - we worked forEVER on the exact shape of accents, singing pitches on Fanfare, and drilling the minute details - all while running. This was my first and only year marching drum corps - my body has yet to recover 😂
Lead trumpet from this show. Really do appreciate the value of you "APPRECIATING" for how hard this repertoire was. There were multiple times leading up to finals where it would be uncomfortable, but we had to keep pushing. Your commentary and reactions were amazing. I hope this show stays in memories for a lifetime.
I've watched this show a countless number of times. I even bought the DCI 2012 dvd just because of this show. No matter what, I will tear up and/or get goosebumps watching it. It is... so freaking cool. I would have given anything to see it live.
When I saw this show in San Antonio that year, it literally changed me as a person. I remember actually telling the instructor that was doing my audition in early 2013 how I saw Crown, and decided in an instant that I wanted to play brass because of the impact it had on me. So thanks for one of the top shows of the decade!
Their timing is impeccable. If you consider the fact that they are a hundred yards apart from each other and a lot of the times as they're playing the tubas are looking at the drum major from their bad side oh, they are giving us nothing but clean attacks and full playing. Carolina crown's brass is nothing but a clinic
You can tell how this show led in to 2013 - the things that were pretty clean in this show, like the chromatic runs and the 3D rotating block, were immaculate in 2013. I don't think any show has ever beat this one in terms of visual difficulty.
Love the show... also, you can't say you haven't seen the entire show.... and then hum and conduct almost every part down to each phrase. lol You've seen it all the way through fam.
I feel old if 2012 is considered old. Being introduced to DCI in 2000 as a teen i guess I'm old. Jeez. Check out 2007 Cadets, they were running like crazy.
Cadets 2007 is honestly one of the greatest shows of all time. I truly believe that the incessant narration is the only thing that held them back from first place. That show fires on every single cylinder
11:41 The triangle formation landing from an incredible build up is a homage to the 1993 Star of Indiana. You can even see the uniform show a similar resemblance to 1993. Not to mention Matt Harloff was a drum major for 1993 Star. It was almost like they made a statement with that resolution that Crown is carrying the legacy of Star.
BrothaNBlue lmao so am I. Don’t get me wrong, I feel old talking about 2012 too, but most kids these days as they get introduced to DCI don’t care for much before 2014
This is forever going to be one of my all-time favorite shows, not only because the performance was incredible, but because of the sentimental value it holds for me. This was the first year I ever got to go to a live show, and I think this show single-handedly got me into the activity. I was invited along with a couple of friends for their one of their birthdays to go to world championships (since I only live a couple of hours from Indy), and I reluctantly agreed to go along. I had pretty much no interest in the marching arts beforehand despite being in marching band, but these guys came on and just...completely blew the roof off of the stadium. They lit that crowd on fire. And then Cabaret Voltaire came on right afterwards. I, along with my friends and literally 90% of the crowd, utterly hated it. It left us so confused and weirded out. I've since come to appreciate that show more, but there's a childish part of me that's still a little disgruntled and bitter about it. This is one of those years that people talk about when they say "The second place corps should have won." I don't know if I can agree quite as wholeheartedly with that sentiment anymore, but it certainly was the most awe-inspiring show that year in my eyes and ears.
I’m time one of those old school drum corps fans he was talking about....I go back to when DCI first started, and yes, this is my all time favorite, I have been a competitor and a fan for all of DCI existence....damn, I’m getting old.....
11:40 LITERALLY HAS MADE ME CRY I DON’T KNOW WHY OTHER THAN THE FACT THAT IT’S SUCH AN INCREDIBLE HIT That hit is also part of what made me become hellbent on learning and marching mello, along with all of Bluecoats 2018, that mello line was fucking incredible
This show should've won. I watched a rehearsal of this show early season in June and getting the concert bass drums together in the ballad was a difficult endeavor. I saw a rehearsal again before NightBeat and still have an audio recording of the opener and it just sounds.....so....good.
Fanfare for the Common Man was one of the first works that made me realize how epic brass features could be. It is only fitting for the corps with the best hornline to tackle and feature such an epic piece so heavily
I'm honestly in love with the era of dci that was drill heavy. But then also I'm super interested in understanding better the appeal to the more modern style of dci
I think the best shows in DCI come when the two eras and styles converge. Having simultaneous demand while also having props and telling a story. I love fast paced drill but I also love the useage of props and verticality.
@@dre6582 I guess agree to disagree then. I do love different shows for different reasons, whether it's the music, or the crazy drill, or i suppose the choreo, im lookin at you cavaliers 2010. I guess I've just generally disliked shows with huge props more than ive liked them.
David DeSalvo I like the shows where the huge props are out of the way mostly so they can still have traditional drill along with having something like that. Boston 17 and Blue stars 19 are good examples of that. They have props that are used to visualize a story while also having fantastic drill writing
I marched blue knights in 2012 and remember seeing this live and still to this day think this is my all time favorite And i think its crowns best brass of all time that year (imo)
Crown's Hornline gives me goosebumps every time I hear them, they are absolutely incredible. Too bad I can never be a part of that since I play woodwind and I'm not even good enough at my first instrument to be on their level, much less learning another instrument.
This show and Cadets '93 top my list of shows that I love to watch but would never want to march. The tempos in both are nuts and the performers have almost no recovery time to catch their breath. (Also, Crown should have won for this show).
That's funny you say that. I marched Cadets '93, and when I think of a show I'd like to test a 21 year old version of my body with, Crown '12 is the one that comes to mind. I can only imagine a season with many moments of physical agony with pure joy right along side it. Just a tremendous feat of human achievement.
When a drum corps can do a better job playing this fanfare than some professionals, that says a lot about what we just watched. For the life of me I can't figure out why they didn't win that year., this was crisp it was clean., and oh my God it was loud in the best way possible.!!
loudest tubas ive ever heard in dci at 10:24 - 10:40 if you listen closely at 10:26 you can hear the E that the tubas play echo for a bit after they release
The writing for this show literally blew my entire mind when I watched it wayy back then and even to this day Crown and most other corps haven’t really hit the nail on the head like this show does. AND IT DIDNT EVEN WIN 1ST 😭😓
Compare the crowd between Carolina and blue devil and there is no comparison. It was a perfect storm of design, talent and execution. Second to none. Historic to have played with that group but also to have witnessed it live.
The closing section of this has you both in astonishment and in tears..... Nothing more has to be said. This is why Carolina Crown will always be in the hunt

This is my favorite drum corps show of all time.
My favorite show of all time is Coats 16 😅😅

Crown 2012 mello section leader here! I'm going to attempt to clarify a few things you mentioned as well as adding a few more fun facts from personal experience. This show always gets my blood pumping (and makes me tired!)
•The source music was originally written for Eb horns, and when the brass team was writing the music, they toyed with the idea of working with Yamaha to make custom Eb mellophones for the season.
•The mello theme that happens twice was something that we "watched the drum major" (HEAVY QUOTES) but basically we ended up practicing it over and over and over again with our eyes closed until we could feel each other consistently.

1992 for me. And I thought '88 was ancient history at the time.
And then there’s those of us who grew up watching drum corps in the 70s and 80s for whom pre-DCI shows are “ancient”.
@@KevinGamin 70s and 80s i admire. I can watch those shows and be so excited.

Scv 2016 is my favorite show. The arrangement was very good and the brass, percussion, and color guard were amazing. Those mellos are insane.
So is SCV 2013, I still think it deserved a medal.
