They put it very well. Blue Devils build shows that are more interesting to judges and tell more of a story (but I can't say I got any story from Ghostlight), while Bluecoats build shows for the audience. Neither approach is inherently better, but luckily you get to choose which you like more, and at the end of the day, it doesn't matter who won as long as you enjoyed the show.
Naah, your biases are a travesty.. Both shows was a winning show and BD won. fyi BD was not boring, it was an intersting and entertaining show. BD is just never entertaining for any of guys , huh. i see
Yooo!! I’m super glad I found this, so much respect for you guys! Y’all were really thoughtful and I love when performers show the community that we can put the competition aside and just appreciate each other’s work. Here’s some questions that I can answer: - The screamers you mentioned were Jack Cummings, Angel González, and Matthew Chinea - That transition into the triple tonguing was a keyboardist playing trumpet effects live - Uniforms were super comfortable during, and a sweaty mess to get off after - The vocalist at the end of blackbird (and after the intro) was one of our mvmt instructors Aylin!! Both of our shows are so heavily based in the details and the minute design choices, I’m sure you could spend hours deconstructing the ideas and how they were displayed, including the different philosophies of the corps. Y’all are a class act, keep it up!!
In case it wasn’t brought up before, there is a great story behind “Blackbird.” In England, I believe, a young girl is often referred to as a “bird” and this song was written in reaction to the desegregation of schools in the US, with specific reference to young black girls in the south having to go to a newly desegregated school amidst protests from white adults. The way the BlueCoat “Spirit Guide” dances with the black color guard member is simply beautiful.
Another cool thing about the Bluecoats 2019 show (and correct me if im wrong), but they were the first corp and show to perform at an NFL game (the hall of fame game). That in itself was pretty cool because again like u said the corp focuses on entertaining. Why not get a corp that focuses more on the audience to play at an event that doesnt have an audience that has an idea what drum corp is. Ofc you have the people that played in band, but don't know what dci is. Also the people that have no musical background don't know what dci is either. The Bluecoats playing at that event probably made an impact for those people and showed them hey band is much more then moving and playing an instrument. (Even tho they chose Bloo because they were from Canton, it was still smart to bring them to an NFL game.)
Im Happy oh fr? Thats cool! Its good to see nfl franchises let the half time show be something that is typically unrecognized. Hopefully more corps will go to more games and dci will have a popularity boost.
I really appreciate you guys doing this and sharing it with the world. I’ve watched your three reaction videos tonight and I really admire the respect you show for each corps and performance. I was at Qfinals this year and although I was rooting for Coats all season, you won me over that night. Please keep providing this excellent content. I really look forward to seeing what you all put together next.
The opener is my favorite. With the trumpet playing the solo from penny lane. And then the FAMOUS A Hard Days Night chord into the “ed Sullivan” announcing the bluecoats. Chefs kiss
I've seen this bluecoats show so many times and I'm a fan of it every single time. I want to March all over again. I am very jealous of how Drum Corps is done today. It is so innovative.
The solos, is the piccolo trumpet guy also does the trumpet solo after the ballad, and then there’s two screamers who trade off, and then the one flugel soloist for the ballad
a good reaction would be bloo 2017 jagged line. Such a great show that didnt score well. I would love to see you guys react to it since malik and alan marched it.
15:35 is gold. BD defintely knows how to design a winning show. They understand that drill design and simultaneous responsibilities are not needed as much to win. You do not need the crazy demand. Now the judges aren't even on the field so it is even less critical now. most dci members including myself , remember a time when brass judges were in front of you sampling from player to player and judging consistency of sound. The good brass lines have everyone playing all the time. A lot can be masked now with no on field judges.
Thank you so much for doing these reaction videos. Not only is it cool to see some of the people I look up to most in the activity geek out over my favorite shows, it’s also really cool to see members from one corps heavily praise another corps’ show, bringing people together in an activity that can be very competitive.
Bluecoats did a great job with within you without you I thought it would be to hard to pull off very nicely done. Horn solos back end of show were fantastic
The two marimbas that you said were brothers are actually not. That is Andy and Kyle. Andy's brother is Robby (also played marimba) but they weren't next to each other. The three Buetow boys (Will, Andy, and Robby) have all marched together at Bluecoats (2017) and Rhythm X (2018).
Having spent some time with the coats at the Band of Excellence, I seriously enjoyed this show. It was such a great experience to get to spend some time with them all, get to know them, play with them and understand what kinda work they do to get where they are. I think it definitely shaped my perception of the corps, and I'm glad I was able to follow 2019 all the way through. Such a good season :')
The way i see it on who should've won -- Everett echoed my thoughts exactly at one point -- both of the shows were winning shows. Bloo was undefeated until semis. However, in terms of scoring, bloo didnt have the cleanest final runs, as well as BD putting in a lot of work in the home stretch. Musically they're both incredible.
I personally love these a lot and it gives me a chance to watch shows I maybe haven't watched a lot and create my own opinions, although I've watched the 2 that yall put out like crazy. But I hope you guys keep making them. Keep up the good content! Also, jagged line plzzz
Yo, I really appreciate this video. I think you dudes really eloquently described the nuances between our groups and the differences between them, and I love how much you all give constructive criticism and props to the show! Content like this is super healthy to the DCI community in my opinion, and something we could use more of. Regardless of affiliation, being able to appreciate (and share respectful dissenting opinions of) the work and product of others, especially competitors, is a cornerstone of what makes our community so special; because in the end (no pun intended 😂) we are all effectively doing the same thing, and recognizing the value in other shows shows grace and humility. Thanks for the reaction, made me smile a lot!
For the ballad blackbird, it’s not about an actual blackbird it’s a rather dark song when knowing the detail behind it which they wouldn’t be able to convey in a show! No way would be able to because it’s very dark. I have the song tattooed cause I was born to it and the facing meaning of always pushing forward when life is hard. Also growing up with the Beatles I think this was a pretty cliche portrayal of them, but my opinion isn’t very popular/shared on it. Fantastic hornline, great GE, not just complaints!
I think the only reason the blue coats didn’t win because of those sour notes but otherwise it was really close they were both great shows and I truly enjoyed them both also a tip for blue devils use a bass trombone
One thing I appreciate, is the way BD has evolved over the years. I sometimes believe the show design to win, has draw backs. Anyway, I would love for you guys to go beyond just the corps you have performed in and look back to other corps in earlier years. Some of the drill design and brass writing is awesome. As an example, the Cadets back in the 80s when they had their 3 peat had some very good design for the time period. The Cavaliers in the 2000's when they were dominating the scene. Anyway, I appreciate you wanting to stay in the modern era, but there was a lot of good drum corps before the last few years. Take the time to appreciate what it was like before electronics and all of the modern technologies existed.
This show was good but i gotta after that Ghostlight was the better show. It just really hit different yk. I think a lot of people wanted this show to win cause it's The Beatles music and all that. But if there was still tying in dci, i think they both would get the world championship.
It REALLY hit different in finals. I was all the way for this show but BD really brought something special in finals. They both were great but BD blew me away.
Exactly as they said. BD does the exact same show every year and they do it impeccably. Kudos to their perfection. They know how to get the high score, no matter how repetitive the show may be each year. The Blue Devils deferred being the innovators of DCI in the early 2000s. They both have amazing shows from year to year, but Bluecoats have pushed drum corps so much further than any other corps. Blue Devils get the edge in judges giving them the benefit of the doubt in everything they do year after year. (Judges just assume that BD is the judging standard no matter what.) From what I saw, BD was cleaner on finals night in 2019 and earned the edge, but no comparison overall with the BC show. Ask almost any audience member which show they prefer.
Would love to have you guys watch some lower ranked corps as well. I love the in-depth discussion behind the shows and corps and would like to hear your thoughts on some not so commonly talked about corps.
Enjoyed the comments! I actually thought the 2019 BD show was more “crowd-appealing” than other shows in recent years. The panels were effective and creative. I was at finals and obviously Bluecoats had more connection with the crowd. Personally I didn’t think either one was as enjoyable as other recent winners like 2018 SCV, 2016 Bluecoats (or many Bluecoats shows in recent years -2014, 2015, 2017). Is love to see GE get more weight though. I’ll love an entertaining show (2016 Academy for example) and would rather see that kind of snow make Finals!
I like these videos, I'd like you all to come back and do more and dive more into the drum corps archives, specifically do this format for Star of Indiana (nothing compares to the "86 wall of sound)
I was wondering why I was hearing Indian classical music halfway through...and then I realized, OF COURSE. It's the Beatles, and George Harrison straight up copied Ravi Shankar's style when he came back from India lol.
I've been a DCI fan for 35 years, and I have to say that this show is easily in my top few favorites of all time. It broke my heart a little when they were announced in second on Saturday night.
