This hornline was so freaking good at skating that line between sizzling tone and being too crass. They flirt with it a few times but stay just clean enough to make it moving and exciting. Bravo.
All I can say after seeing that show in person was like being blasted with glitter when they hit those overtones. The visual and audible stimulation they pulled off still gives me the chills.
not only that but the editor of the vid specifically singled out the mellos from the background noise making it very clear to the ear, so in person you most likely wouldn't hear it from a decent distance
It’s an alternate dynamic system based on how much air must be used to “empty” the lungs in a certain number of counts. So 6 count air would be emptying in 6 counts. It’s more accurate than saying “fff” because everyone interprets that differently.
This hornline was something else man. Jesus

PXevo beautifully said, couldn’t agree more but never thought about it that way.

One of the cleanest recordings of the ballad duet🔥
EuphAsta thank you! They did a rep on air before this so I just layered them. Pure luck
This is the best recording of a mellophone section I've ever heard.
Thank you!
I love this video because it shows that even the top level of drum corps can still crack notes. Great none the less
for some reason, vanguard never sounded great in the lot in 2018. didn't end up mattering, obviously.
Even up in the BD alum block at the Rose Bowl show we knew this was a monster program....and that we were in trouble!
11:43 I will never grow tired of that “Vanguard snap.” It’s so good!!! 🤤
Anyone else get skate 3 vibes with the corner blurs?

4:27 YEOOOO I DIDNT KNOW MELLOPHOENS WENT THAT LOW WDFFFF
JD pedals my dude there's an octave below that
Yeah dude, lol I can go like 2 octaves lower than that on my mellophone, just technique and air
I’m a woodwind player - I don’t know anything about these instruments so at least you’re not as bad as me lmao
@@shritan0 in woodwind terms, you have a limit to how low you can play, brass doesn’t
With enough practice and the appropriate technique, brass range is theoretically infinite.
2:24 is this just a warm up or is this in the show?
Warm up- canyon. From their 1999 show
corps song
Traditional warmup, The Canyon by Philip Glass, they use it because it’s a good warmup, and it’s really fun
6:44 damn yikes u can really hear them re enter
Not on the feild
@@-5249 yeah ik it's just weird to hear it since you really never do
When your sound is pure you can hear individual mistakes. That’s why it’s so hard to get that clear crisp sound
That's not a friendly note either, that note never likes to stick unless you overblow to high heaven
not only that but the editor of the vid specifically singled out the mellos from the background noise making it very clear to the ear, so in person you most likely wouldn't hear it from a decent distance
11.00 is magical...
Which group is playing that in the background at 10:41???
Sounds like blue devils space chords but idk for sure
That's definitely BD
Thank you
What's the warm up called at 0:43? And is there sheet music for it?
It’s just a lip exercise, similar to lip slurs just played staccato
It’s a scalar study. They just adapted to a rhythm in the show.

Best mello section ever.

mellos go BRRRRRRRRRRRRR
7:47
Stan Kenton would be proud....
Miller Scott Miller Betty Perez Ruth
what
That's not Pasadena. That's Riverside.
Joel Lopez correct
My bad, you are correct!
Holy overtones
What is 6 and 4 air?
It’s an alternate dynamic system based on how much air must be used to “empty” the lungs in a certain number of counts. So 6 count air would be emptying in 6 counts. It’s more accurate than saying “fff” because everyone interprets that differently.
7:03-7:30 😩
2:24 where is this from?
It’s a piece called “The Canyon” by Philip Glass. They played it in their 1999 show and often use it as a warmup
Is anybody allowed to go listen to these?? Or just alumni?
The beginning is Riverside not Pasadena still great vid
Nice dude.
