Eddy Santos there’s a Mello player from scv who was born with only 3 fingers. There’s a headcam video of his run through, and it’s really impressive that he was able to make it work
I will never grow tired of watching/listening to this show. This, in my opinion, is where DCI peaked. The mellophone line was absolutely spectacular this year, and it’s a shame I never got to see it live.
Just watching how much fun y’all are having on the field is so great. I march for Avon high school, and like, nobody would DARE talk during a performance. That’s super cool. The culture y’all have is amazing. You guys have fun on the field and that’s what it’s all about. Keep on rollin guys.
During their encore they had every reason to talk They won the pressure was off and it was a release of emotion. AS far as the "dut" that is a form of talking on the field and with all the years I have marched, never would our instructors allowed that. It may be common now but in my opinion not necessary.
Dude hearing the single baritone echo into the completely silent crowd at 6:58 gave me chills. Then the gorgeous chords played backwards were just as good. Then came THE SNAP. AAAAAH. So clean!
Hooooly mello section. I just started marching band this year marching mello and watching stuff like this makes me pumped to run my show 50 million times I dream of marching SCV after high school, every time I see a show of theirs, it leaves me absolutely breathless!!
Bro, at the Middle Tennessee show that year, we were sitting in the upper bowl in the center, really good seats. And as you guys were coming onto the field preparing, none other than Matt Harloff sat in the row in front of us. He is the easiest to distinguish person ever, so It was very clearly him. By the end of the show, he seemed very intimidated by you guys. I'll always remember the look on his face at the very end.
I love all the support and love they give each other, especially the excitement they all have at the beginning, and how they all wish each other good luck and to have a good show.
When I joined marching band as a mellophone this year I had a sophomore send me a little of the music that someone tried to transcribe for mellophone for me to learn and I tried l and gave up, I never gave it much thought until I got curious and looked at the show. Stunning. Needless to say I was amazed at how utterly awesome this work of art is. It also has some of the best mellophone music I’ve seen. It made me start learning a bit again and I think this may be may favorite marching band/dci show I’ve seen. This was one of the most deserved dci championship victories I’ve seen. Beautiful.

@@mattbowman33 do you mabe know any of the tubas that maybe have the sheet music so you could maybe send it me so i could maybe try and learn it???????
How did you learn or how were you taught to play the rips at such incredible speed and precision? I'm doing my best to learn right now and I'm sure if I were to make a corp they would teach us, but I would love to hear it from you
aeysace I break it down slowly. So I’ll chunk each quarter notes length of music and connect them as I go. I’ll start slow, and speed up the tempo after I get whatever I have down 5-10 times in a row depending on how hard the lick is. If I get 4 in a row and the 5th is bad, I’ll restart. Basically, lots of reps helped my dexterity. Also, we break it down a lot during pretour so that helps too
Chris K. That’s a BERP. It’s whenever we want to do a rep on mouthpiece only or whenever we want to buzz a part of the show. The BERP allows us to keep our instruments up so we buzz with correct posture and horn carriage
SCV uses Hammond mouthpieces and the mellos use the 6MP version specifically. And that black thing is a berp. We take our mouthpiece and stick it in that to buzz the passage that they ask us to buzz.
Salty Seal we march Yamaha brass instruments. Trying out other mellos, I believe this is the best you can get. You can also go onto SCV’s website and get a used mello for a reasonable price. Other corps sell their used instruments too, so look around for the cheapest price!
It honestly didn’t take us too long! Of course it got better and better as the season went along but we didn’t implement it until we actually had all the choreography and such down I believe. It’s all hazy to me but it wasn’t perfect on day 1!
Elliot Woo no use, it’s just for ease of not having to take it off every performance and put it back on after. Saves time. Some say it can affect the pitch a little but we did experiments with it in 2019 and it didn’t seem to make a difference
Matt Bowman really?! Well I might try to do that. Another Mello advised me to join the vanguard cadets first since it would be easier but I might try to get into vanguard
