He was mad at the injustice of it and the “mysterious ways” copout that dismisses that injustice. His mother devoted so much time to good works and prayer and just gets crippled by a tiny blood vessel in the brain at 33.
@Khorne Berzerker How does that make sense to you when you say it? Why do apolegetics always blame the bad shit on fundamentalists like it doesn't rip the foundation from under you? There wouldn't be any problems like this if the fundamentals of Christianity weren't themselves flawed. "Fundamentalist" wouldn't have such a negative connotation if the fundamentals of whatever the subject may be weren't negative also.
Pay close attention to his lyrics and you will see that he’s not mad at God, he’s sad that the faith in Christ actually caused a rift between him and his mom during her years of suffering. He couldn’t identify with her. Maybe even a little jealousy that she was closer to God and Jesus than she was with him....
His mother was alive at this point. She was paralyzed and left in a bad way. I always took this as he would use her as an inspiration to not be a part of religious blind Faith and that his anger was with her God not as much with her. In the later songs he views her relationship with God in a different light.
I think the real progression should have been Intermission/Jimmy (he talks about when she was paralyzed), Judith (still alive, but fading), Wings1/2 (she had died). You are missing which is about when everything happened.

Agreed. On Mount Calvery the two men jabbed the spear into Jesus' side and water came out. Now Maynard is angry cause "These guys jabbed a spear into your sons side while on the crucifix, yet my mom is the one suffering for loving you."
Art is the miracle of transforming loss, struggle and suffering into something others (and yourself) can expierence as healing, as katharsis. It's a manifestation of beauty out of misery. Isn't it a saying that the worst artist is one who is totally satisfied with life? I mean it's definitely true for Blues! If I would believe in god I would mean that art is the one thing we have to rise above all that mundanity and ordineriness and be a little more like god or take his perspective. But of course I am making the mistake here to think of intellectuality as something superiour to mundanity. Well I wish it would be. Music and art comforts me in that way. In the end I think everything is the same. Duality. Endless dialectic - thesis antithesis synthesis. Yin Yang. Our desire to compare things to value anything at any time without exception if we want to or not is our nemesis. Our inability to deal with coincidence and randmoness in combination with fate which drives us into a believe in a (not random) afterlife which will give everything meaning in retrospective, our struggle to find meaning in sense in things is deeply human. Which is why we would rather be like god because we don't like being human at all. Fragile, mortal, with little control, knowing the right way but to weak to stick to it and all that. There is no deeper meaning. Only now.
He actually said this in an interview a few years back, people asked him why as the years went on why he did a lot less angry screaming, he said because he uses the music to heal.. he's basically exercising his demons.
I believe it’s a matter of perspective. When I was in the ministry full time and being the lowest pastor on the totem pole, I was given the responsibility of hospital visits. I was always told “Go pray for a healing” I’ve entered hospital rooms and for some reason, know that death was in the room. I had been admonished for praying for the assurance of “FAITH”... “Too be absent from the body...” “Oh death, where is you sting?”... I was encouraging people to embrace the miracle of the cross, I was rebuked for not praying for the power of healing... What better healing than “Everlasting Life”?... I left the ministry... So, when I first heard this song I understood his angst, at the same time it speaks to me as a testimony of HER FAITH... Not sure if he meant it that way, but that what it says, or at least what I heard.
I really respect and admire how you two approach the blasphemous with open mindedness and honesty. Whether listening to A Perfect Circle, Type O or Behemoth it is so refreshing to hear commentary like yours that proves that appreciating music for what it is doesnt mean you have compromised your values. I wish there were more people with your attitude, whatever their beliefs or lack thereof.
Great song, one of my favorite by Maynard, and you guys really did it justice with your breakdown. The truth is, I’m an atheist who grew up in an extended evangelical family. But I’m the rare atheist who actually respects folks who have the strength to stand by their faith. I know a lot of Christians who would refuse to even listen to this song, who’s faith isn’t strong enough to be challenged by Maynard’s anger at God. You guys really showed the strength of your convictions by seeing his situation for what it was, and not judging a guy who was obviously in a lot of pain when he wrote it. The rest of your trilogy is going to be just as great I’m sure.
What does atheism mean to you? Just wondering. Does it mean you don't subscribe to organized religion or does it mean you are 100% positive and hold proof that there is no higher power?
Dude, very similar to how I grew up. Very traditional church of Christ/Baptist. I eventually walked away from my faith. Most of my family turned their back on me because I had a different belief, I'm a hippy, believe in the universe and oneness shit. My dad couldn't bear the thought of many things of my life and when I hit rock bottom he attacked instead of helped. He couldn't handle a poem I wrote that I posted, or The Doomed. He was disappointed that I wasn't sharing his same faith and held it against me. So this much of Maynard songs hit some for me.
He's raging against his mother's faith, unable to reconcile his love for her with her completely alien (to him) faith in something that he would do nothing but blame if put in her shoes. I loved how you guys tease the meaning out of the song. I really struggled with this song for years but am getting a lot out of it now. Your plan to do the entire "Maynard's Mother" series is really great... I think those songs contain a profound reflection on human love and anger and acceptance.
My mom let me stay home from school on my birthday and took me to Mediaplay to buy this album (which came out exactly one week before my birthday), then a bunch of Chinese food. I then fattened myself up while blasting this album and playing The Sims on the family computer. Good times. 😀
Wow. You're discussion about this song made me appreciate this song more than what it sounds like on the surface. Now, when I listen to this song I hear his pain and frustrations.
insane rollercoaster with you guys. One vid loud as hell the next I can barely hear anything just to get a heartattack with the next because I already forgot that I turned everything as loud as sh****t. Nice tactic to keep the audience awake :)
It took me a while to creep into his mind to ‘get’ how angry he was and move past the literal lyrics. I’m in love with his passion his anger his fear his love for his mother
Great song on so many levels. I deeply appreciate your thoughtful and open examination of the song and taking it for what it is and the honest pain that it came from, whether justified or not. You're good people. Love your channel.
Wow, what wonderful discourse and deep dive into the song! Stumbled across your channel, instant sub. Lyrical analysis is such a rare type of reaction on RUclips these days, no one seems to have the patience for an intellectual discussion. Really appreciated the theological facet as well, to be able to empathise with Maynard even from a spiritual foundation is really great to see. Keep it up!
Came across your channel from the Cradle of Filth reaction actually. I have a background in theological studies and a love for metal, so I find the perspective of people who approach rock and metal from a scriptural framework fascinating. Tool and APC are two of my favourite bands of all time, so as soon as I saw the rest of your output I was hooked! Gojira too! And Devy! If I could humbly request a reaction to Steven Wilson's Routine, that would be amazing. I think you'd genuinely find a lot in the lyrics to muse over.
Two Vocalists on this track. Keenan and Billy Howerdal. You nailed what the song is about. Keenan explains on the Amotion DVD how the song is about his mother Judith Marie Keenan, who suffered a stroke and was restricted to a wheelchair for the rest of her life, yet still believed in Christianity. You got me, subscribed :)
I believe the song Jimmy by Tool is actually the first song about his mother’s stroke when he was eleven. Would love to see a review of it added to your trilogy to make a quartet. Thanks for the very reasoned and insightful lyric breakdowns, have really enjoyed them.
Yes I think we’ll probably add that at some point. “Wings” and “10000” were so highly recommended we shot two vids in one sitting and we’ll release those succesviley ... jimmy has been mentioned so many times though we have to get to it
Btw. , as a young child a priest told him that his mom must have done something wrong in the eyes of god and therefore has to suffer from beeing paralyzed ... for sure this is a traumatic moment that can influence your opinion on religion forever. So it is easy to see why he doesn't like religion at all.
This song spoke to me on so many levels. My father had a stroke and was paralyzed when I was 9. My mom and him divorced. My mother died when I was 12. I had to take care of my father and I would hear him praying every night before he went to bed. When I first heard Judith years later I identified with it so much. Not only did he do it for my father and mother, he did it all for me.
truth. No matter how smart, and grown you are, losing your mother, especially if you absolutely adore her, seeing her suffer would break you down in every possible way. Anger is part of that process of grief.
I have learned more about God and the bible from watching this channel, than I ever did going to church as a youth. I am 47 and have been watching for about a month. I love the way you teach. I don't feel like an idiot listening to you.
I’ve just found your channel and I love how deep through the songs and their meanings you go. Sorry for my English is so far from perfect! Anyway, my suggestion is The Mayan Factor - Warflower
The lead singer is a Artist and that's how creative people deal with their pain. He feels like God has let him and his mother down. You can't but to feel his pain and anger in this song! "Art disturbs the comfortable and comforts the disturb." Take care
I think a great video for you would be Schism by Tool. I know its a generic choice, but that song is a lyrical masterpiece. I really appreciate how much time you spend understand lyrics. I am a songwriter and I really respect your respect for the art.
She was paralyzed for 10,000 days... great reactions guys. I never ever comment...I have to say you guys really get it and your reactions are great! Keep it up!
Another good one guys :) I see from the comments that you got additional information on this one and I can't wait to see your Wings/10 000 reaction. And, Vin - you just redeemed yourself in my eyes after giving The Pot a 5 LOL
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and all thy soul, and all thy mind. The pain and anger in the singers voice is truly heartbreaking. This is such a powerful song. Great discussion guys!
Love the reactions. Maynards voice is just soooo stunning. Listen to Passenger by Deftones ft Maynard. Maynards voice playing off Chinos is just epic stuff
That songs so goddamn great, it's about car sex which is hilarious to me but it's such a good song it doesn't even matter Kinda like tool does with prison sex and stinkfist
I am soooooo loving this. I am at the 7:50 mark watching you two brace for impact. I do find it interesting that you think him child like while describing your child like beliefs. You have earned a subscribe.
thank you for your great reaction. Jimmy - TOOL : is a song about his feelings as a boy of 11 years when his mother got paralyzed. Wings for Marie pt. / 10000 days ( wings for marie pt. 2) is a beautiful ode to his mother. songs definitely belong together so it will be a long ride. Lyrics are genius. Music is out of this world. You will enjoy it very much. As i will enjoy your reaction :-)
I like this song because like you said, it’s very clear what he’s saying and I honestly think that more people should, but also because I’m not a believer because I have not been able to reconcile scenarios like this, and others far worse, in a way that leaves any positivity for not just religious belief, but the god idea in general. That being said, I appreciate hearing people like yourself take the time to listen to and break down your thoughts.
For Wings 1&2 use the video from youtube user "Lyric Music Videos" it is really well done. Simple but hard hitting cinematic effects. DIg your channel by the way.
Agreed. Even if you cut the video into part 1 and part 2 I hope you guys can sit down to record it all the way through in one sitting. It's long but better that way
In the last few months I have got into watching music reaction videos and I have to say I enjoy and appreciate the way you both react to music more then the rest. Very analytical and deep. I can't say your perceptions are wrong about this song but I perceive that Maynard is not mad at his mom but baffled or confused at her faith. I believe he is saying why are you not as enraged as me about your unearned short comings. Just my opinion. And in case you didn't know the band always writes all the music first and gives it to Maynard then he comes up with the melodies. Then begins to write the lyrics so the emotion of the music always dictates the emotion of his lyrics. Keep up the great work. I hope nothing but the best for the two of you.
Yes I agree with you, probably should have articulated it better but yes I don’t think he was mad at his mom in the pure sense of being angry at a person. We’ve heard constantly folks saying we’re a deeper reaction channel, that’s such an honor. We started this out of our passion for music and outright love for human beings. So to hear that means people get us. Thank you for that !!
Love you guys😍,.. you're so far the best reaction watchers because you don't stop the song and dialogue for 60 seconds, you just listen and react at the end.👍
Vin is right. You inspire me to never be like you. "Hurtfully Sarcastic" BTW, Instant Sub..... 3 Libras is a good one from them. Very different side of APC.
Some people are too weak in faith and any bump in the road pushes them off the path. Its the faith kept at the worst time that truly shows your strength in god.
A Perfect Circle has so many great songs. Metallica made a song with a similar theme. It is called "The God that Failed" off the black album. I think that would be a great one for you to react to.
another A Perfect Circle song you guys should react to is Orestes. This song has so much symbolism behind it including mythology and Maynard's own past. Also the song is just absolutely beautiful. Maynard and Billy's harmony in that song are amazing.
I realise I'm very late to the party and you will probably not see this, but can I just say how fucking refreshing it is that you are analysing this song so rationally rather than being offended about it attacking your faith. People from all walks of life and perspectives could learn a lot from this video, myself included.
Wow I appreciate that. We’re reviewing “wings” and 10000 days. As s trilogy after Judith. If you’re suscribed you can get priority in song suggestions. Do you have any titles you suggest ?
I went from a similar belief system you guys seem to be coming from within Christianity to swinging between a crazy pendulum cynical/hopeful agnosticism in the last couple of years. I've loved this particular song since it came out, and I was worried things might get a little preachy, but you guys were completely and wonderfully respectful. I'm not anyone special, but I definitely appreciate it. Thank you.
Every time I listen to any of Maynard’s work it is like the song is physically reaching out and wrapping its hands around my head, Interlocking its fingers and pulls me in!
I personally believe the best way for people to grow is through suffering. No other emotion gives you the same deal that suffering does; you can either move on and ignore it, you can fight and let it destroy you, or you can embrace it and grow from it. A person who has everything, will learn nothing. It’s because we suffer that we have such influential and brilliant artists such as Maynard
We’re working on our editing. Sori is progressing so far. She’s gone from not knowing a thing about iMovie to editing like mad. Thanks for letting us know it sounds better as it progresses!!!
I'm about two years late to the party here. I looked and don't sew a video of you two listening to Pucifers Horizons song. It brongs a tear to my eyes everytime. He expresses his love for his mother so beautifully. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and understanding with us.
what he was trying to say by saying you're an inspiration for the ways that I will never choose to be is he was trying to explain to her that he will never follow in the footsteps of Christianity because of what her beliefs had done to her. Or at least that was his perception.
"you're such an inspiration for the ways i'll never ever choose to be" is quite literally him saying that he'll never choose the way that she chose, and that what she chooses is what inspires him to choose not to do it, like an anti-rolemodel of sorts
I think this speaks more to the struggle to find ones way through the grieving process. Questioning faith when someone so significant as his mother endured such tremendous pain and suffering is understandable and predictable given that she held her faith in such high regard. I take this as a more of a commentary on his personal struggle in that moment, sharing the cup of emotion that overfloweth. Vin is right though, the honesty is important. Sharing that level of emotion with someone who might otherwise be suffering alone might give someone the hope to know they’re not alone and that it is indeed survivable.
That's my "won the interpretation contest" score (which admittedly is equally as skewed on my end as it is either of yours lol). Great stuff! Keep em' coming!
I just watched the holy war video, and immediately thought to recommend this. Good thing I checked before hand! Glad you guys got a chance to listen to something like this.
So, have you guys ever listened to Kansas? The reason I bring that up is because their earlier albums were very spiritual and searching. The guitarist/lyricist was trying to find the truth and in the end he found Christianity. I thought that you would find that pretty cool.
I don’t comment on many videos but I wanted to share my take with you. I believe this song is a conversation with his mother before she passes. Not an actual conversation but a story to illustrate how true of a believer his mother was and how angry and grief stricken he was. Since Maynard always layers meaning there is the psychological story of how grief and tragedy, not only can fracture your life (like we hear about in Jimmy by Tool), but how we can lash out with misplaced anger. Maynard often uses this conversation technique in his writing. He often uses different voices or maybe adds effect to part of his lyrics so you can differentiate the back and forth or duality of meaning in his singing. Anyway, to make it brief and simple, the conversation goes like this. Anger voice is him speaking to his mom. He is obviously overwhelmingly angry and distressed. Putting full blame on god. I believe he is blaming god specifically because his mother is strong in her faith so it makes it an easy target to focus on. His mother’s only line is repeated throughout the song. “He did it all for you”. She is telling him that god has done what he has done to benefit him (Maynard) and that she is ok with what has transpired and it will help him grow and understand and ultimately help use this paired with his gifts to help many others. Perhaps if you listen to the song again you can see what I’m trying to say. Thanks!
I read that Maynard basically said this song is about how his mother's church friends would encourage her and pray for her while she was with them, and then they'd go home and talk behind her back about how bad off she was. There's a video here on RUclips where he explains it in more detail. Just search A Perfect Circle Judith Maynard Commentary. There's also a couple other videos where he explains the meaning of a few other APC songs. It's commentary from A Perfect Circle's aMotion DVD.
I am so happy for you guys are on here I am a Christian as well I enjoy music and I enjoy the talent and musician but I also feel Guilty I’m glad to see that there are believers now reacting to music God bless you guys have a great day by the way I love the book of JobBut the book of Daniel has to be my favorite
Sorry I am late to this party. I love your reactions and I am impressed that you are 'getting' this. Thank you so much! The song is just what you said, it is a son raging at the sky at the injustice of suffering and death and loss.
Howerdell, Van Leeuwen, and all the session engineers responsible for the guitar sound on this record really knocked it out of the park. Van Leeuwen came previously from Failure, who has a different but equally incredible sound to their recordings. Definitely give Fantastic Planet a listen if you haven't heard it.
As somebody who takes Maynard's perspective, who does RUclips videos and appreciates unbiased opinions/approaches/discussions, I thought this was an incredibly intellectual, fair, unbiased, interesting and progressive conversation and I applaud y'all for it, please keep it up and consider me subscribed.
As a very devout Christian, I absolutely love to listen to both Judith and Wings for Marie (part 2), because it shows his conflicting feelings about her faith and devotion to God despite her horrible physical condition. He's honest to simply open up his heart and show us exactly what he feels, even if he didn't find a way to find peace with what happened to his mother. In Wings for Marie he even admits his arrogance in this regard, singing: "Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance". But despite that, he hopes that the tiny little bit of faith his mom gave to him will be enough to one day save him too: "And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me" and "[Tell your maker:] I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one", by which he hopefully, almost pleading, refers to himself as the one his mother "surely saved". There's so much you can get from this song, it's incredible.
You should listen to Silverstein ( I put the lyrics below) "The End"(feat. Lights) The first time we met Your face became etched In my mind You were the sun I was the one Who worshiped you. My hands were your guns Your eyes were my muse. And I knew you could never love me I had so much sorrow inside You could never reach But can I still keep A place in your heart? You broke my heart You promised me the moon and stars I fell for your dreams. I fell for your lies There was no other way You know I tried And I knew you could never love me I had so much sorrow inside You could never reach But can I still keep A place in your heart? There is something I want you to know I think you know exactly what it is I didn't want to save you I didn't want to save you I set our house on fire To watch it burn But I couldn't just leave you there And I knew you could never love me I had so much sorrow inside You could never reach But I'll ask you this Will you still miss me? (Yes I'll miss you) Do you love me? (Yes I love you) Planes fill the sky We'll both die tonight We'll both die tonight Hands from the sky Swat us away like flies As we follow the light Planes fill the sky We'll both die tonight We'll both die tonight Hands from the sky Swat us away like flies As we follow the light We'll both die tonight We'll both die tonight Swat us away like flies (We'll both die tonight) As we follow the light (As we follow the light) This union, a battle fought and lost This union was not about the cause This union was never about love
He loved her so much, that is why this song is so emotional, that is love to try to guide someone in the right direction and not to blindly follow and believe your god will save you, you must do it yourself, put all that energy into believing in yourself.
Hmmm taken by itself maybe, but in listening to the other songs in the trilogy, it seems like he came to another conclusion. Lemme know what you think of the others once they’re released
Im glad people still go this deep when listening to music. More people need to. Maynard is literally brilliant. I notice you have other Maynard reactions. Have you guys discovered his fascination with the Fibonacci sequence? Its a Mathematical Sequence that can be found in everything we do. He has a entire album based on and around this Sequence. Look it up it will blow your mind. Google Fibonacci Sequence Tool Lateralus.
Interestingly enough, the "Fuck your God" line and all similar moments from that pre-chorus are not spoken by Maynard, but by Billy Howerdel on backup vocals. If you listen closely, you can hear it is two different vocalists. He also plays rhythm guitar, composes the music for APC, was the guitar tech for Tool, and Maynard's college roommate. I believe he plays bass on all Mer Der Noms (Ocean Of Names) tracks but Sleeping Beauty, which is played by Cellist, Miss Paz Lenchantin
Additionally the album 10,000 Days by the other band that he is in named Tool is in reference to his mother as well. It is the number of days that she lived after having that debilitating stroke.
I really like your Christian perspective on these videos. I'm not religious but I was raised Christian, have personally read the entire bible, and have done thousands of hours of studies on the bible and its formation, I still study it to this day even though I've been an atheist for 7 or so years now. I really love your explanations and interpretations because although I don't agree with what you believe I very much understand what you're talking about, know all the references you make and I feel like I can really see things through the lens that you guys are seeing them. It's actually really enjoyable even from the perspective of a non-believer :) and I love Maynard so that helps haha
I don’t think he was mad at her just mad at the hypocrisy of Christianity in general.
I think so too
He was mad at the injustice of it and the “mysterious ways” copout that dismisses that injustice.
In this link you can find Maynard's reasons to write the song and the meaning that all this have for him.

Pay close attention to his lyrics and you will see that he’s not mad at God, he’s sad that the faith in Christ actually caused a rift between him and his mom during her years of suffering. Good info. Ya sometimes people can be so aligned with their faith that anger at them v God can sometimes be indistinguishable. Good call
I think the real progression should have been Intermission/Jimmy (he talks about when she was paralyzed), Judith (still alive, but fading), Wings1/2 (she had died). You are missing which is about when everything happened.
Jimmy is such an amazing song. Sober is what was always played on the radio but Jimmy is the song that hooked me and made me a fan of the band.
We’re adding that as the “prequel” to the “Maynard’s mom” trilogy
just to add a little context to this, Judith had been faithful, that did good work; volunteering in soup kitchens, missionary type work earlier in her life. She was hit by a drunk driving pedophile which caused her paralysis and she remained faithful after. This song is basically about 1 person questioning anothers faith, How in the face of such hypocritical tragedy can you remain faithful?
"It's not like he drove a hateful/spiteful spear into his side" is a line that doesn't get enough love
Talk to jesus christ as if he knows the reasons why, he did it all for you....
Another line that needs more love.
Agreed. On Mount Calvery the two men jabbed the spear into Jesus' side and water came out. Now Maynard is angry cause "These guys jabbed a spear into your sons side while on the crucifix, yet my mom is the one suffering for loving you."
In the Roman way of thinking he was doing him a favor.
Agreed
Maynard heals through his art.
Tru story !

I don't think he will totally healed
He actually said this in an interview a few years back, people asked him why as the years went on why he did a lot less angry screaming, he said because he uses the music to heal.. he's basically exercising his demons.
Not completely.
I believe it’s a matter of perspective. When I was in the ministry full time and being the lowest pastor on the totem pole, I was given the responsibility of hospital visits. I was always told “Go pray for a healing” I’ve entered hospital rooms and for some reason, know that death was in the room.
Much love man !
@@VinAndSori you should do type o negative September Sun.
Open minded, this trio have listened to Lord Abortion. They should be in the Government somewhere. :)
Maynard is incredible with his voice. How he held a 25 second scream in "The Grudge" on Lateralus, I'll never know.
Great song, one of my favorite by Maynard, and you guys really did it justice with your breakdown. The truth is, I’m an atheist who grew up in an extended evangelical family. The rest of your trilogy is going to be just as great I’m sure.
michael porter it is pure uncut Maynard.
Great perspective to have my friend. You’re surely not one of those to cut us all right in two.
@@chrisclevenger1582 were you on drugs at Rock bottom?
Weak and Powerless by A Perfect Circle has some powerful lyrics also
I’m certain we’re going to get APC requests after tonite, so it’ll happen I’m sure !
Weak and Powerless is about heroin addiction
Same with Orestes, one of the most beautiful APC songs imo.
So who is the demon behind the bastard gas giant star Saturn?
I'm jealous of anyone who's just now experiencing the sound of APC for the first time
He's raging against his mother's faith, unable to reconcile his love for her with her completely alien (to him) faith in something that he would do nothing but blame if put in her shoes. I loved how you guys tease the meaning out of the song. I really struggled with this song for years but am getting a lot out of it now. Your plan to do the entire "Maynard's Mother" series is really great... I think those songs contain a profound reflection on human love and anger and acceptance.
Exactly ! The trilogy is complete! Let us know your thoughts !
My mom let me stay home from school on my birthday and took me to Mediaplay to buy this album (which came out exactly one week before my birthday), then a bunch of Chinese food. I then fattened myself up while blasting this album and playing The Sims on the family computer.
Good times. 😀
Damn man. Nostalgia. I forgot about media play. Loved that place.
Wow. You're discussion about this song made me appreciate this song more than what it sounds like on the surface. Now, when I listen to this song I hear his pain and frustrations.
Thank you !
insane rollercoaster with you guys. One vid loud as hell the next I can barely hear anything just to get a heartattack with the next because I already forgot that I turned everything as loud as sh****t. Nice tactic to keep the audience awake :)
Lol orrrrrrr we had terrible tech issues before we upgraded!
You definitely upgraded to be more caring to our ears *thumbs up
It took me a while to creep into his mind to ‘get’ how angry he was and move past the literal lyrics. I’m in love with his passion his anger his fear his love for his mother
Great song on so many levels. I deeply appreciate your thoughtful and open examination of the song and taking it for what it is and the honest pain that it came from, whether justified or not. You're good people. Love your channel.
Vin my Man, the you guys break down these songs, NO other channel does it so good. SUBSCRIBED!!
That’s high honor! Thank you !
PASSIVE...trust me when I say PASSIVE IS THEIR BEST SONG.
Keep it up!
Thx! How did u stumble? Ya vin and I do this even when we are not recording. After we watch movies it turns into a deep discussion. Love It! -Sori 🤘🏻
Can you please react to The Humbling River by Puscifer. And she died 3 years after the song was released.
That’s the second request in 2 days !
Please do. It's a great song. Not really rock at all.
Cool! Welcome!!! -Sori✌🏻
I was waiting for a comment like this. The one who did the angry growl was Billy, not Maynard
Excellent reaction video, you guys are very insightful and informative, I dig it. New subscriber.
I subbed. I don't believe in religion but seeing someone look at this that is open to see what things really are is fantastic.
Awesome Brother !
Jamey Alford indeed lean more towards being a heathen metaphorical acolyte of trickster deities myself.
Same
This song spoke to me on so many levels. My father had a stroke and was paralyzed when I was 9. My mom and him divorced. My mother died when I was 12. I had to take care of my father and I would hear him praying every night before he went to bed. When I first heard Judith years later I identified with it so much. Not only did he do it for my father and mother, he did it all for me.
thats a hard story man i hope you are ok right now
Even thou he's a grown man he's still a child who lost his mom
that song isnt insane... only the truth...
Appreciate this so much my man!
I’ve just found your channel and I love how deep through the songs and their meanings you go. Sorry for my English is so far from perfect! Anyway, my suggestion is The Mayan Factor - Warflower
Your English is great! Do me a favor and suscribe so that we can put war flower on the list !
I’ve already did that.
It’s on the list !!
It’s sacred man. Gotta give it respect! I appreciate you seeing that!!
Yesss I love the way they analyze the lyrics.
So crazy. This was the first video i watched of you. Amazing to see the growth between them and now
She was paralyzed for 10,000 days... great reactions guys. I never ever comment...I have to say you guys really get it and your reactions are great! Keep it up!
You’ve commented a few times! Thanks for that. It means a lot !
Another good one guys :) I see from the comments that you got additional information on this one and I can't wait to see your Wings/10 000 reaction. And, Vin - you just redeemed yourself in my eyes after giving The Pot a 5 LOL
Hahahaha!! Thanks lol I appreciate that!
Just a little fun fact for you folks. The official video was directed by david fincher.
Who’s that ?
VinAnd Sori Director of Seven and Fight Club
Director of Seven, Fight Club, Gone Girl, the Social Network, the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and many more
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and all thy soul, and all thy mind. The pain and anger in the singers voice is truly heartbreaking. This is such a powerful song. Great discussion guys!
Love the reactions. Maynards voice is just soooo stunning. Listen to Passenger by Deftones ft Maynard. Maynards voice
playing off Chinos is just epic stuff
Thanks!! I’ll add it to the list!
Seconded!
Took me so long to determine who sang what they sound amazing together they should do it again
Warren Leggatt uneffing believable. epic.
That songs so goddamn great, it's about car sex which is hilarious to me but it's such a good song it doesn't even matter
Kinda like tool does with prison sex and stinkfist
I am soooooo loving this. I am at the 7:50 mark watching you two brace for impact. I do find it interesting that you
think him child like while describing your child like beliefs. You have earned a subscribe.
Glad ur enjoying! -Sori🤟🏻
thank you for your great reaction.
Thanks Marco, we’re publishing “wings” first today and then 10000 Friday
Late to this party but you guys are awesome. Also nice effect on the video to mimic the look of the music video ;)
"You inspired me to never become like you."
I love this honesty of this video...
Album came out in 2000. She did a few years later.
We’re recording wings soon tonite
I like this song because like you said, it’s very clear what he’s saying and I honestly think that more people should, but also because I’m not a believer because I have not been able to reconcile scenarios like this, and others far worse, in a way that leaves any positivity for not just religious belief, but the god idea in general. That being said, I appreciate hearing people like yourself take the time to listen to and break down your thoughts.
Great reaction! I can’t wait to see wings 1&2. I’ll be honest, the first time I listened to the song with the lyrics I shed a tear
Nobody can do pain like Rock and roll. Great stuff thanks for your honesty Justin
For Wings 1&2 use the video from youtube user "Lyric Music Videos" it is really well done. Simple but hard hitting cinematic effects. DIg your channel by the way.
Thanks for the reccomend we’ll do that!
Agreed. Even if you cut the video into part 1 and part 2 I hope you guys can sit down to record it all the way through in one sitting. It's long but better that way
Most thought out reaction to this song I’ve seen. Best reaction channel on RUclips!
Judith was still alive at this time. She might have just been diagnosed with cancer
Ya it was unclear ... she died in 03 and the song was written in 2000 I believe
3 libras is such a beautiful song. the entire album is so pure. I love the song Brena
The story of Job is my favorite part of the Bible
Great insight ,great reaction
maynard don't fk around
I like that you said 20 years from now... because it's almost 20 years old now. You're right, it is timeless.
To understand more react to ‘Wings for Marie’ and ‘10,000 Days’ which are 2 parts of the same song by TOOL.😉
Recorded both of those last night. Being released tonite and tommrrow
VinAnd Sori awesome! Can’t wait!
Friend request us on fb!!
I love when musicians make people feel uncomfortable but opens their minds at the same time.
She had a stroke and was alive at this point.
I realise I'm very late to the party and you will probably not see this, but can I just say how fucking refreshing it is that you are analysing this song so rationally rather than being offended about it attacking your faith. People from all walks of life and perspectives could learn a lot from this video, myself included.
I'm sure you guys will get big.
React to some more of Maynard's stuff
Wow I appreciate that. We’re reviewing “wings” and 10000 days. As s trilogy after Judith. If you’re suscribed you can get priority in song suggestions. Do you have any titles you suggest ?
VinAnd Sori The Patient or Parabol/Parabola are some hot suggestions. Any song from Tool's Lateralus would do it actually, such a masterpiece!
Word!
Thank you.
The song Jimmy of of aenima is also about his mom.
So I’ve heard, we’re going to get to it soon !
Every time I listen to any of Maynard’s work it is like the song is physically reaching out and wrapping its hands around my head, Interlocking its fingers and pulls me in!
Ya I felt that too except the song was doing that more to my soul then my head!-Sori
You should react to 3 LIBRAS guys!
Jeff Nerdcore Peralta magdelena, the hollow. the rose.
ill go ahead and pass that motion,,,,,,on you now vin and sori
I personally believe the best way for people to grow is through suffering. No other emotion gives you the same deal that suffering does; you can either move on and ignore it, you can fight and let it destroy you, or you can embrace it and grow from it. A person who has everything, will learn nothing. It’s because we suffer that we have such influential and brilliant artists such as Maynard
My favorite A Perfect Circle song
Same! -Vin
I just found you guys yesterday. Love your channel and that you all are open minded.
Great reaction, audio is a bit quiet though
Thanks ! I think once the music comes in it corrects ... lemme know as you continue
VinAnd Sori I meant in the beginning! Forgot that part!!
Silverchair - Spawn Again
On the list !
Diorama and Neon ballroom both worth listening to.
what he was trying to say by saying you're an inspiration for the ways that I will never choose to be is he was trying to explain to her that he will never follow in the footsteps of Christianity because of what her beliefs had done to her.
Nope , Chicago ! But I love my Guinness ☘
🍻 if we’re ever in chi town we’ll toss s few back for sure
Invite me too :-)
No doubt!
ChicagoTRS you got it bro !! 🤘☘🤘🍺🍻
Right on, this is what we’re trying to build!!
LITERALLY SAVED ME
Vin - 1 Sori - 0
Finally someone agrees with me!!!
Wait?!? What?!? What the heck did I get a zero for?!?! 🧐😡😝
-Sori🤟🏻
That's my "won the interpretation contest" score (which admittedly is equally as skewed on my end as it is either of yours lol). Great stuff! Keep em' coming!
How rude! We are all friends here buddy no need to be so serious, Sori and I were just having some playful banter.
This is an excellent dissection of one of the greatest songs by the greatest lyricist/vocalist ever. I’m always left emotionally exhausted.
Thanks !!
Thanks!
Matt Bagot unique interpretation!
I think this is the first video I watched from you guys.
Happy to find you !
Amazing song!
Post the link to your channel por favor
She hadn't died yet. You are right about his sarcasm and being pissed off though. Keep up you're great openness.
You should listen to Silverstein ( I put the lyrics below)
"The End"(feat. Lights)
The first time we met
Your face became etched
In my mind
You were the sun
I was the one
Who worshiped you.
My hands were your guns
Your eyes were my muse.
And I knew you could never love me
I had so much sorrow inside
You could never reach
But can I still keep
A place in your heart?
You broke my heart
You promised me the moon and stars
I fell for your dreams. I fell for your lies
There was no other way
You know I tried
And I knew you could never love me
I had so much sorrow inside
You could never reach
But can I still keep
A place in your heart?
There is something
I want you to know
I think you know exactly what it is
I didn't want to save you
I didn't want to save you
I set our house on fire
To watch it burn
But I couldn't just leave you there
And I knew you could never love me
I had so much sorrow inside
You could never reach
But I'll ask you this
Will you still miss me?
(Yes I'll miss you)
Do you love me?
(Yes I love you)
Planes fill the sky
We'll both die tonight
We'll both die tonight
Hands from the sky
Swat us away like flies
As we follow the light
Planes fill the sky
We'll both die tonight
We'll both die tonight
Hands from the sky
Swat us away like flies
As we follow the light
We'll both die tonight
We'll both die tonight
Swat us away like flies
(We'll both die tonight)
As we follow the light
(As we follow the light)
This union, a battle fought and lost
This union was not about the cause
This union was never about love
Lateralus...we’re working on a major tool project in the very near future ...
Awesome! Sub'd so I dont miss it.
10,000 days maynard wrote after his moms death.
I guess I should have checked your playlist before I requested this one haha
😉
Nice breakdown of the lyrics...Really enjoyed this review!
Exactly ! It was a great thing to be able to do
Interestingly enough, the "Fuck your God" line and all similar moments from that pre-chorus are not spoken by Maynard, but by Billy Howerdel on backup vocals.
I'm a mamas boy, I'm not afraid to admit it. That is a deep song
