I think this video speaks about so much more. Yes the lead singer questions the faith his mother had and how her church basically did nothing for her when she was stricken down. But yet Judith kept her faith. It may seem gullible to some, but it obviously meant alot to Judith. I think as a believer you can find some beauty in that. Even at your worst, you can always look to the better days promised. I see some beauty in that.
Spot on. When he was very young Maynard's mother (A very devout christian) suffered either a stroke or aneurysm (not sure which) that left her paralyzed for the remaining 30 or so years of her life. Maynard was very frustrated with her continued faith despite all that had happened to her. Following her death he wrote a very beautiful ballad for her with his main band Tool 10,000 days part 1 and part 2 (Wings for Marie (his mother's name was Judith Marie)). I suggest you check it out, beautiful songs. the name 10,000 days is emblematic of the time his mother spent confined to a wheelchair before she passed. I tear up listening to it almost every time.
It is hard for me to listen to Wings for Marie without getting choked up. I feel it is his way to apologize to his mother for how he felt when he recorded Judith.
I would recommend doing a series on Tool songs. If you want followers and 'likers', just give any reaction to any Tool song and we'll come in droves. That band, IMO, is the greatest musically gifted band there's ever been. You have arguably the greatest drummer of all time in Danny Carey. MJK's lyrics and vocals are beyond sick. Adam's guitar progressions are mind bending, and Justin's bass is melodic and heavy all at the same time. You can't go wrong in choosing any song but at worst case, start with Aenima album, maybe 46&2, H, Jimmy, and Aenima itself, then move on to Lateralus. The Grudge, Parabol and Parabola, The Patient and then on to 10K Days, and finally finish off with their latest Fear Inoculum. Pneuma and 7empest for sure but Descending and Culling Voices are ridiculous. My suggestion though on each of these is to make sure you either read the meaning behind the song first or even have the lyrics up as the lyrics are such an integral part of Tool music. And set aside time. Tool's songs aren't your typical 4 minute song. But trust me, you won't wish they were any shorter than what they are.
I could not have said it better myself. Just make sure they are not sped up versions, like the incident with "The Pot" You said everything us Tool fans would say. Listen to Daniel, Half and Jai!
I like to imagine the voice and lyrics are performed for cathartic purposes, as a term of endearment with some taunting thrown in but respectfully acknowledges that her faith can be real to her while not to him, acknowledged out of a rarely earned respect forged in their lives and experiences together. Amazing piece of music.
Dude you nailed it exactly. This song was him coming to terms with his mother's death. Wings for Marie(his mothers name) and 10,000 days is his tribute to her after death. You have to listen to it. It will break your heart.
I'm old enough to have bought the CD in stores back in 2000. The thing about playing it in a CD player is that the band's symbol will spin fast enough that it forms...a perfect circle. PS - I heard that Slipknot intro!! :)
"You're such an inspiration for the ways That I'll never ever choose to be Oh so many ways for me to show you How the savior has abandoned you Fuck your God Your Lord and your Christ He did this Took all you had and Left you this way Still you pray, you never stray Never taste of the fruit You never thought to question why It's not like you killed someone It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side Praise the one who left you Broken down and paralyzed He did it all for you He did it all for you Oh so many many ways for me to show you How your dogma has abandoned you Pray to your Christ, to your god Never taste of the fruit Never stray, never break Never choke on a lie Even though he's the one who did this to you You never thought to question why Not like you killed someone It's not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side Talk to Jesus Christ As if he knows the reasons why He did it all for you Did it all for you He did it all for you"
The ability to write an album THAT HEAVY ... and get that deep into it ... and save the first Expletive for that exclamation point!! "METAL, METAL, METAL ... ... Fuck Your God, your Lord, your Christ ... he did this to you!"
The song was written in 1999 or maybe even before and the album is from 2000 so it is 10 years before that video was posted and yes the song is about Maynards mother who died from complications from a brain aneurysm in 2003.
His mother became paralyzed when he was eleven. (Tool has a song called "Jimmy" about how he had to go live with his father and deal with all of that at age eleven.) This song - Judith - is about not only her illness, but also his own anger due to the fact that he blamed God/Jesus for doing that to her for no reason that he could think of: (like he said, "It's not like you killed someone. It's not like you drove a spiteful spear into His side.") Despite what happened to her, she remained especially devout to God until she died and her devotion to Him was a particularly touchy subject with Maynard (the singer/songwriter.) He blamed God for what happened to her but the song itself is mainly about admonishing his mother for sticking with God even though he left her "broken down and paralyzed." and he sarcastically ends the chorus with the line, "He did it all for you." to kinda throw that Christian talking point back in her face. Good review, especially for doing no research on the subject! You got a new subscriber.
There's been a good amount of comments about the meaning of the song. I'll just add in that Jai, you laid eyes on Paz Lenchantin...quite possibly one of the baddest bassists in the last 70 years. She's an absolute monster. You should check out the bass breakdown of "Judith" for a peek into her skill.
The singers mom had a stroke which left her paralyzed. He also sings in the greatest band of all time, TOOL! Try "Wings for Marie PT 2". The women Judith went to church with blamed her for the stroke for not being Christian enough and Maynard hated that.
I LOVE that you are such a girl's girl. You support other women and badass gals and you appreciate them for that. I wish there was more of us ladies that did that. But you always do; you did it here, you did it for Snow, did it for Nicki, and I LOVE you for being a woman that supports women. It shouldn't be rare.
I have so much respect for this song on many different levels for several reasons. You’re right, it is deep. People already commented on the meaning, no need to repeat that. The lyrics and musical arrangements just flat out works, put together by a man whose childhood was traumatized by seeing his mother ravished by a stroke, yet her faith never wavered. He couldn’t process that. Fast forward to his adulthood, and he put it in this masterpiece.
The first line in the song is Maynard being hurtfully and angrily sarcastic to his mother. He was saying that he could never be like her, blind in her faith to the god who in his mind did this to her.
"You're such an inspiration for the ways that I will never, ever choose to be. Oh, so many ways for me to show you how your savior has abandoned you. Your lord, your christ, took all you had. Still you pray, never strayed.. You never thought to question why. It's not like you killed someone! It's not like drove a hateful spear into his side. Pray for one who left you broken down and paralyzed.. He did it all for you."
Maynard is a truly God gifted genius. He has declared though that he no longer identifies with his Christian faith (Southern Baptist I think), and part of the reason for that were hypocrites in the church and his Mom's paralysis from an Aneurism. TOOL has an album called 10,000 days (which is how long Maynard;s Mom was in that state). You should listen to Wings for Marie and 10,000 days together.
His mom Judith was religious. She had had a bad stroke when he was young and she never lossed faith. He was very angry and hurt. This is about her and I believe his pain as well
This song is much older than you think.. maybe that particular video was uploaded in 2009, but this song is from 2000, trust me, I’ve been a Tool/A Perfect Circle fan since the late ‘90s
You have to listen to wings for Marie part 1 and 2 now. Its like a triology about his mother. Use the lyric video and please use earphones!! You won't regret it
I’ve seen like 3 reactions of this song and none have understood he was saying “fuck your god with all your faith and all of his so called love. You pray to him like he’s going to help, but the reality is he’s the one that did it to you in the first place with his grand design/plan since everything is already predetermined to end the way he chose since the beginning.” 🤷🏽♂️
This is a song about MJK's (Maynard James Keenan) anger... towards his mother, her god and her devotion. I've lived a life with the same parallels. MJK was raised in a fundamentalist household and religion was forced upon him. His mother had a stroke and became paralyzed. This anger probably came in the same way mine manifested. Though my mother has had continuous health issues and now partially paralyzed, she continues to push her views. She'll tell me how my great my life will be if only I repent and get saved. To which I think she is not a good representative for how great a life of Christianity is. When Christians "witness" to people, they talk about how your life will change for the better if they convert. I'm sure MJK's mother did the same thing. When you see someone you love is suffering and they blindly following a dogma that doesn't offer the payout they cling to, it's very upsetting.
Yes the song was inspired by his mom Judith but if you listen to the lyrical content he’s speaking about Jesus. “It’s not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side.” When Jesus was impaled on the stake a Roman soldier pierced his side with a sword to make sure he was dead.
I really hope you'll listen to Tool, but I don't think you guys care much for the requests in the comment, which is a shame because it makes me feel alienated as a viewer, like I can only have a relationship with you guys if I pay you money. Gonna pitch it anyway, listen to Tool's Wings for Marie parts 1 & 2 to further understand the story of Maynard and his mother. Or listen to Descending for just an amazing ass Tool song.
I was just about to suggest WIngs for Marie, 10000 Days. However, I would back up and listen to the first song in that 'series' which is "Jimmy". Jimmy is from their Aenima album and sets up the entire story. But definitely WIngs and 10K Days!

I’m OGT back from ‘92. But I wouldn’t say they’re “much better”. That’s like picking which kid is your favorite. I love all of Maynard’s kids like my own. And I don’t have any.
just so you know you could be the first to react to- def leopard - gods of war and billy's got a gun , but this song is also one of my favs ,also another old rock band with a black lead singer from the 80's -jon butcher axis- the song is- life takes a life ,,, love that base line in the song
APC does an absolutely SICK show. I've seen Maynard with Tool, Puscifer and APC and he runs a tight, tight ship. Will forever be groove. Puscifer is some sexy stuff too, if you like Maynard.
Always keep your faith no matter how hard life gets❗️Hope u guys enjoyed this reaction❗️We luv u guys and see u next video🤟🏾
This song is about blind faith. Question everything.
Faith is gullibility
Jeff Spicoli You must be a child. Grow up.
Faith? You mean, believing without evidence? Sorry, I have no use for it, because it's not a path to truth.
I think this video speaks about so much more. Yes the lead singer questions the faith his mother had and how her church basically did nothing for her when she was stricken down. Decent not many know that. Respect metal fam.
Paz tying up her hair is legendary and well known
it's so metal
I couldn't agree more brother 👍
@@Pyregazer sooooo metal
fell in love with her ever since that also that being the first time seeing who the bassist was
Super sexy
Video was directed by David Fincher, the director of Fight Club, Seven, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and so on. That's why it looks so good haha
Judith is an absolute masterpiece

Very true
I mean...Led Zeppelin, but yeah Tool is right up there
Brian Guthrey I’d say Tool, but would they be the Tool we know without Led Zeppelin?
Need to stop listening on laptop speakers if they are gonna get into Tool lol
I could not have said it better myself. Just make sure they are not sped up versions, like the incident with "The Pot" You said everything us Tool fans would say. Listen to Daniel, Half and Jai!
One of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard. Maynard is a masterful vocalist and that note he carries at the end gives me goosebumps every damn time!!!
I like to imagine the voice and lyrics are performed for cathartic purposes, as a term of endearment with some taunting thrown in but respectfully acknowledges that her faith can be real to her while not to him, acknowledged out of a rarely earned respect forged in their lives and experiences together. Left you this way
Still you pray, you never stray
Never taste of the fruit
You never thought to question why
It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you
Broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you
He did it all for you
Oh so many many ways for me to show you
How your dogma has abandoned you
Pray to your Christ, to your god
Never taste of the fruit
Never stray, never break
Never choke on a lie
Even though he's the one who did this to you

You mention the video. David Fincher directed it...he's also done films like seven and fight club so its definitely that sort of vibe goin on
David Fincher is a visionary director.
One of the things I love about Maynard is that he doesn’t want the spot light , he wants your focas on the music which is awesome.
There are great songs, there are masterpieces, and then there's Judith. The entire album is a monster.

I see it
Damn you guys are great at figuring the song out
For real. I had my doubts at the start but you nailed it!
Check out Tool’s “ Wings for Marie “ pt 1&2 next .
She's rocking the heels with....*screech*
guitar? that's a bass hun....=)
Awesome stuff ❤️

Great freaking band ! Maynard does his thing with A Perfect Circle and earlier with tool. Would F-ing love to hear reactions of/from both!!!
Putting your hair in a bun during a quick guitar break is so fucking alpha it makes me weak. The cinematography in this is so amazing.
Maynard is a truly God gifted genius. He made this song off anger cause with happened to his mom this song is a fucking gem 💎🔥🔥🔥🔥
Paz is Argentinian. He is now the lead singer for tool. Maynard James Keenan.
You guys should check out "Rule of Nines" by Spiritbox, a great little djenty Canadian metalcore band, with a strong vocalist. Great reaction!
His mom Judith was religious. She had had a bad stroke when he was young and she never lossed faith. He was very angry and hurt. This is about her and I believe his pain as well

What happened to his mother is truly sad. She stayed strong in her faith till the end.
You have to listen to wings for Marie part 1 and 2 now. Its like a triology about his mother. Use the lyric video and please use earphones!! You won't regret it
The song is Judith by the band a perfect circle
It’s a must to watch a lyric video

I was just about to suggest WIngs for Marie, 10000 Days. However, I would back up and listen to the first song in that 'series' which is "Jimmy". Jimmy is from their Aenima album and sets up the entire story. But definitely WIngs and 10K Days!
@@danielripple9601 absolutely, and musically Jimmy is one of my favorite songs. Great suggestion
If they are going to go with Tool they should start with a song like The Pot. Wings for Marie is not one to start with although it’s a beautiful song.
Maynard definitely shows range here
"It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side" Jesus bled water on the cross and that is a biblical reference. Basically, this whole song is questioning religion and why bad things happen to good people.
Time is the biggest enemy and we can't stop it. Therefore BE EAGER TO LEARN. GET YOUR MONIES WORTH WHILE U CAN.
saw this live, it was awesome. also RIP Mom
His devote mom woke up paralyzed
dude we went for the ad at the same time
His mom was sick ended up in a wheelchair.devout christian.her church members said "maybe if you were a better Christian this wouldn't have happened to you".that is why he is so pissed off.he couldn't understand why she still kept her faith.imagine being told it's your fault you are disabled from a sickness.
You left out the part where her christian congregation said it was her fault.because she was not a good enough christian.🫤
How did I miss this video?? I must have totally overlooked it.
Maynard is the lead singer, you should check out his main band TOOL
TOOL is my personal fav... their songs sound amazing and the lyrics are very deep. Check them out and react to them please!!
This is special
Darcy!!!❤️
I got to see Maynard perform before any of his famous bands. He did a local public television show here in Grand Rapids, MI.
Two years later, Tool was born.
Strange guy Maynard...😂
Edit: I forgot it was posted to RUclips haha.

Judith marie🎸
God bless im Canadian but love ya too
Hahahahaha, I already know. Welcome to the family. Jambi next
Start with Tool Sober Live at the reading festival 1992. Eulogy, H, 46 and 2, Anemia, Stinkfist.....go from there.
The first two A Perfect Circle albums are equally as great as any Tool albums.
NO
While I don't agree, I will say that both APC albums are DAMN good, if not great in their own right!
This song depicts his confusion about why his mother still kept such a strong faith with God even after what he feels happened to her. Meaning, how can she still love God after he "allowed" you to become paralyzed for the rest of her life.
Deep
You gotta do the sequel to this song next. Jimmy by Tool, it’s his other band, and Tool is much better. Great Reaction, keep it up.
This is the sequel. Jimmy is the beginning, and 10k Days is the conclusion.
@@Hatrimn they have no idea, but you do🤫👌
I’m OGT back from ‘92. But I wouldn’t say they’re “much better”. That’s like picking which kid is your favorite. I love all of Maynard’s kids like my own. And I don’t have any.
@ourworlds atwar all 4 songs are emotionally linked. Jimmy, Judith & wings 1 & 2 in that order.
Yes, he's pissed at God for his mother's death, that he loved so damn much. She got cancer. Read the lyrics, it explains it all!;)
TOOL... TOOL...TOOL.....!
Shes a complete god loving women through and through ..and then she woke up criplled
Yeah thats darcy from the smashing pumkins
Please react to his other band tool 10000 days part 1 and 2 Together its on the same topic but get the lyrics and tissues ready .
Great video. Peace
The main point is that she was very religious even during her struggle, and then she died. You can understand why his lyrics are the way they are.
My mom passed when i was 10 so i relate❤️🌈
From the smashing pumpkins
Imagine ignoring God then expecting everything to come up Maynard.
Oh you guys opened up a can of worms you have no idea what you're in for
