"Judith Marie Keenan was a devote Baptist who suffered a paralysing cerebral haemorrhage when Maynard was just 11-years-old. Judith would remain paralysed for 27 years until her death in 2003, and the amount of time Judith spent paralysed would inspire the title track to Tool's fourth studio album, 10,000 Days."
It's about watching his mother, a devout Christian, decline and wither away while still being faithful in God. He both admired and resented that about her. The song is just literally him struggling to understand why something like that happened to her when she was a good person. God understands the pains of those, so don't worry, my guy, he isn't gonna be mad you reacted to the video.
There's no evidence or sound reason to believe in the christian god. Spending your time contemplating whether or not you're going to be punished for listening to music is so idiotic.
@@AugustAPCGod doesn't punish you for listening to music. Besides, Maynard was talking about the church congregation for telling his mother that it was her sins that caused her illness. In all reality, that's not Christianity. As a Christian, I'd be actually pissed if someone in the church said something like that to anyone. Don't listen to religion. Listen to what Jesus taught, and life will be better. It won't be easier, but it will be better.
Maynard (yes, the Tool vocalist) certainly doesn't pull his punches with his song writing. His mother Judith was stricken down and physically debilitated for decades before finally passing. She never lost her faith, whereas Maynard obviously developed a much different belief. He has created many incredible songs because of this terribly sad, life changing experience. Glad you could hang in there and still recognize the amazing talent and music, even if the subject makes you extremely uncomfortable. Powerful art can do that to a person. That last long held "you" is AMAZING, simultaneously so gut wrenching and gorgeous. No, you're not going to go to hell merely for being exposed to another person's inner emotional world, or listening to an opinion that differs from your own. I would hope any supposedly loving Creator wouldn't be quite so petty and insecure as that.
This was one of the most important songs and bands of the 90s/20s that went under the radar for many. Glad you made a reaction to it to bring renewed interest to it.
Maynard has written a few songs about his mother, her stroke, and how it affected him through the years. Others in the comments have explained the story, so no need to reiterate here. Jimmy, by Tool is (as far as I can tell) about how he felt when it happened when he was 11 years old. The two part song Wings fo Marie and 10,000 Days, also by Tool is calling out the people in her congregation who treated her as if her stroke was a punishment from God for her sins. This (Judith) song is him coming to grips with his anger over what happened to her and how she could keep her faith in, and devotion to, a God that could do such a thing to such a wonderful person. Maynard frequently uses creativity to work out things for himself and takes us along for the ride. The bonus is that there's usually something that he can help you work out in the process.
YES. Came here to recommend Wings for Marie and 10,000 days (Aka Wings for Marie part 1 and 2) from Maynard James Keenan with Tool. These 3 songs together are a true journey. The visceral anger here, then how he concludes it so beautifully with Wings. When he says “10 thousand days in the fire is long enough, you’re going home” it brings me to tears.
@@riffgroove Yes. He was born James Herbert Keenan. While in the Army he got the nickname "Maynard". Something to do with drawings he did of a character he named Maynard. After leaving the military he changed his name to MJK
You’re not going to Hell for watching this video. Don’t worry about that. The reason you’re going to Hell is because you have a picture of Yoda on the wall. I have Yoda on my wall too so I guess I’ll see you there. Cheers!
Solid pt. Going towards 2000 was crazy. People really thought the world was gonna tilt over or whatever. Tons of wild music, expression. Good music in that
Judith is in my all time top 10. Vocals and musicality are raw and powerful. Don't worry. You're safe listening to the expression of someone else's trauma, experiences and conclusions. I would suggest 3 Libras for your next Perfect Circle listen, promise it's different! 😄
If God is God and is the Creator of everything in the universe, and is omnipotent (knows all things all the time), omnipresent (is everywhere in existence at the same time, created us as human beings and therefore knows each of us individually inside and out, then if God is God they would know when or if we are angry with them. So, why not express it. It's not blasphemy to be angry with God. In fact, IMHO, it would be hypocrisy to be angry with God and then not express it and deny that you were. I don't fault Maynard for feeling this way at all. Even Job was angry with God and questioned them. This is part of what it means to be human and is part of our spiritual growth.
"But the music is hot though." Hahaha, yeah, can't deny them that. Don't feel bad for liking a song, the artist feels how he feels because of the way he sees the world, it doesn't make him evil. A listener can still appreciate the instrumental power and the power of his voice and emotions without agreeing on his stance on God. Doesn't make you a sinner to hear a song, you have to sin to do that. Even then, JC was always pretty big on forgiveness I hear.

um....what? Music and art isn't merely about "sounding good" to "jam" to. Yes, it's that....but it's also something that ought to provoke you to question your deepest assumptions and beliefs. Needless to say, religion and faith is something that should be deeply questioned. Far too many people assume what they believe is true....and seem to care less whether or not it's actually objectively literally true. Personally....I only care about what is actually true. If I have a belief that isn't true....I want to get rid of that belief. Even if it's the single most important belief I have. Because at the end of the day.....beliefs do not matter. Only reality matters. Believing something that isn't true....is legit dangerous and causes genuine harm to people. There's a reason so many people are leaving religion. They realize the overwhelming harm it does.....along with the fact there isn't a rational justification for it's empirical validity in the first place. Surely that's perfectly appropriate a subject for music and art to tackle.....right?
