Lol they just as good as Tool. Ppl get so obsessed with Tool ...and I get it. I LOVE Tool. But this constant comparing of 3 different styles of his bands is ludicrous.
I did too they were my first concert. I saw them in Memphis right before Covid. I also saw tool soon after when I was 17. They are awesome my 2 favorite bands as my first concerts.
I love Josh's work on Gravity. He's always beyond awesome (as this one, The Outsider, unquestionably proves), but his choices on that song are just incredible.
Great track and another great reaction Polo. My understanding of this song is it was written about Layne Staley (Alice in Chains lead singer, monster voice, rock legend) and the addiction problems that eventually led to his death, but from the point of view of Layne's brother.. like the frustrated cry of a family member who can't do anything to help, but also doesn't understand the addiction that even Layne knew was killing him. Tragic on every level.
Weak and powerless from this album is a great song. Hollow is another powerful song. And everyone is different dude. Music moves us in the wind among various temperature and inconsistencies . So there is no reason to just go along with the weather if it's not your kind of day. And that's ok . Thank you POLO for your time and another great reaction
Hollow/Weak and Powerless back to back live from Red Rocks is perfection and I never listen to either separately. The live versions are just on another level, especially the guitar solos
Pet by a perfect circle is by far one of my favorites.... Maynard has another band called pucsifer, conditions of my parole and the remedy are really good
"one bullet at a time" is the clue to this song - drug abuse being an eventual "self deletion" one shot/pill/hit at a time. Also, the album's title, "Thirteenth Step," is an expression people in 12 step programs use to describe the common occurrence of people dating other 12 steppers, despite doing so being very much discouraged. I absolutely love the last line of the lyrics - "Do it far away from here" - to me meaning, "Do what you want, but just not around me."
What I've taken from this song is> Individuals ignorance to suicide and people who have opened up about struggling with those thoughts. To then be judged for that struggle.
I had a different take on it. Yes, there's the suicidal element but for me it was about not being drawn in and devoured by people who are committed to chaos and their own self destruction. There are just some people who are not satisfied with you throwing them a life vest. They don't want "help".....what they actually want is for you to get out of the life boat and drown with them.......
@@eggstu I did nothing of the sort. I was telling him to put it in the perspective of the album as a whole. Bleeding heart. Stop being offended by everything. He’s a new listener, he’s not us.
How is the last song on the album a song to tie songs together? And yes disgustipated is after this but just as an outro. I think he was just put off by that very long intro ( I was for years). This whole super pretentious theory that every album only works as a whole or even works better as a whole is meaningless.
In his book, it talks about how Maynard uses his breathing training from cross country as the inspiration for his unique cadence. I thought that was pretty rad
Great reaction as always. I like how familiar with Maynard’s idiosyncrasies you’ve become. Re the lyrics , in another reaction thread someone related that it’s told from the perspective of a person visiting hir loved one in rehab and doesn’t “get” that the person is actually suffering and not just acting out for attention. You’ll love 3Libras by APC!!
This album means a lot to me having been through addiction and suffered from mental health issues. So excited to see you dive into maynards other works. I got to see this one live once and it was incredible. Would love to see some Puscifer as well!
I can offer more insight as to the meaning of this. 13th Step is an album based around spiritual recovery. "The Outsider" is a song from the perspective of the "victim". They don't understand what's wrong with the person, their help is repaid in pain, and they are over the endless helplessness presented by the offender. If you've ever cared about or attempted top help an addict, this song speaks true to that experience
There's a live version of this that I recently found. Unbelievable performance. Maynard is other worldly and his scream is so raw yet perfect. You probably don't want to react to the same song again but I thought you should check it out. 💜
This album is one of the great 'concept' albums of recent times. It's thematic from the beginning....(I hate to copy and paste, but) the 13th Step is a term for when a 12-Step member hits on a group newcomer with less than a year of sobriety. It can be for a variety of reasons - emotional, financial, physical - but either way, it's someone in a position of power trying to take advantage of someone who is weaker. If you listen to the album with this in mind, it makes so much more sense. 😉 Y'all have to give Billy Howerdel his props too... It's his band and he really formed this amazing collection of talent
4:20 "that's like a signature thing that maynard does" nailed it. great observation! check out a song he did for the mr show movie "run ronnie run" soundtrack, entitled "ass kickin' fat kid". he lays on the "signature thing" thick, like, cartoonishly so. youtube: "ass kickin' fat kid". lol, enjoy. vicarious "it's no fun, til some one... dies" gd maynard
There is a live version of this song that they performed on some late night show I believe that is absolutely amazing and you actually see have incredibly talented Maynard actually is. He sounds almost exactly like the album recording. If you liked this song I would for sure check that one out if you get a chance.
In all of my life, if anyone tells me, "They were right about you.", my soul would leave my body. The most devastating insult ever leveled at another I have ever heard.
That's what I thought too? I thought it was about when MJK tried talking to Laynes sibling who had no compassion since it was something they hadn't experienced since they weren't an addict. Some are saying it's about totally different things. Music can be interpreted anyway you like I guess. 🤷♀️
Yes, please do any/all of APC!!! Also, sidenote, does anyone else wonder if polo just let's that spinning perpetual motion thing in the background always/constantly move or just sets it on when he records? Seriously asking, lol.
Song is about Layne Staley singer from AIC. The fault line is the track marks. One bullet at a time refers to shooting up. If you like down songs I highly recommend you listen to Alice in Chains SAP album, in particular the song "AM I inside" Hauntingly beautiful.
Apparently the song is about Layne Stayleys brother. Layne was killing himself with his heroin addiction. When Maynard reached out to brother, this song was his brothers reaction. Something along those lines anyway.
I commented on your video for Killswitch Engage: End of Heartache and mentioned that a version of that song appears on the Resident Evil: Apocalypse soundtrack...A remixed version of this song is on there too...track 5 to be exact! It is my favorite version of The Outsider...the volume seriously can NOT be loud enough!
I’m actually surprised that as I was scrolling through the comments(and I didn’t go all the way to the end), I didn’t see any mention of “The Package”, which I think may be my favorite of all of PC’s songs. It has a great vibe, and when it breaks into it, I have heard few songs that go as heavy. Anyway, this whole album is great. Glad you’re moving into this.
Another great reaction, Polo!! And now I believe that you’re ready to check out Puscifer as well. 😜 I believe that you NEED to check out The Remedy by them as well.
The entire "Thirteenth Step" album is about addiction. This particular song is about someone who *isn't* an addict trying to relate and give advice to someone who is, without having any idea of how all-encompassing an addiction can be. Kind of like that Jock older brother who yells at you "It's not that bad! Walk it off!"
If you ever want a great live performance to react to, I HIGHLY recommend A Perfect Circle Live At Red Rocks. The entire Thirteenth Step album is amazing. Damn near TOOL level perfect.
If it were a tape it would be worn out lol. That's how many times I've played it.
Another one that benefits from a beginning to end listening order.
Agree 100%
considering the whole albums bout the 12 step program its a heavy one
Lol they just as good as Tool. Ppl get so obsessed with Tool ...and I get it. I LOVE Tool. But this constant comparing of 3 different styles of his bands is ludicrous.

W opinion, this a stranger, the noose and blue are my favs.
Gravity is one of the most powerful single tracks I've ever heard!

A Perfect Circle is incredible. Mer de Noms is probably the most sonically perfect album of all time. Every song on that album gives me goosebumps

I listened to this album a lot when I was serving in Iraq. Everyone has their favorite song, for me it's Pet.
You will not go wrong with doing all songs from Perfect Circle, they are just as iconic as Tool
A running joke amongst my friends is that if "A Perfect Circle made a 'best of' album, it'd have every A Perfect Circle song on it"
"if you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere. Do it somewhere far away from here!" Ouch Maynard 🤣
Favorite APC song. Been my alarm in my phone for almost 20 years now. I start every day with this song.

U gotta hear some puscifer. Conditions of my parole a good start spot. On this album blue and a nurse who loved me are my favourites
I thought he'd really like the Remedy by Puscifer, but Conditions is good too.
Yeah he's singing in triplets when you mention that cadence. Love it! Check out some Incubus! Anything from the S.C.I.E.N.C.E. album
Flood is an in between song to tie the songs together on the album. Listen to the album as a whole and you’ll understand where “Flood” fits in 🤟
Couldn’t said it better myself. Remember listening to tool the whole albums is an experience. Just can’t listen to 1 song off of albums
I feel this is an insult to Flood. It's an amazing song with an amazing buildup. Honestly one of my top Tool songs of all time.

Oooof MJKs voice in passenger gives me chills👍
Deftones were extremely popular. They were not “underrated” in any way.
Deftones..?? Underrated??
Thirteenth Step...one of my favorites
My son just got a vinyl of this album and it’s amazing. My favorite APC song is Blue.
The Package is A Perfect Circle’s best song. My next favorite is Pet.

Josh Freeze is the drummer for a perfect circle, I believe. He's amazing as well.
So solid. I actually prefer his style drumming to Danny's but that's just me.
In the 12 STEP RECOVERY community, those of US who are in the TOOL/ PERFECT CIRCLE
