One of my favorite songs of all time. It’s one of those that hits you right when you need it in life. If you haven’t checked out Tool’s Wings For Marie (Pt. 1) and 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) yet, that should be next. They’re about his mother and very moving as well 🖤

I was working on my house and put this CD on intending to listen while I worked, but the instant those first chords of The Hollow hit my ears I just dropped what I was doing, kicked back on the couch and listened to the whole album, start to finish. Billy Howerdel is the other mastermind of APC, he was a guitar tech for a bunch of bands like Faith No More and Nine Inch Nails, worked with Tool for their Aenima tour, showed Maynard his music, and Maynard said if he ever formed a band he would sing for them. he plays the guitar and bass parts for most of this album.

Great reaction. This song rules and I would highly recommend checking out the music video now that you have the song at least partially digested. It's hands down the greatest performance based music video in my not so humble opinion. It's just the band ripping through this song in the most casual yet somehow powerful way possible. It has just enough small moments of personality in it as well. It was directed by David Fincher, so no wonder why it's great.
Excellent channel, dude. Keep it up.
    Peace

@@poloreacts27 Hi. I’ve liked Tool ever since Undertow came out in the very early 90s. In my estimation your analysis of the lyrics is spot on. You clearly did your due diligence. It’s easy to see this song as a rebuke of Christianity, however the focus of his anger seems to be directed solely at the church his mother attended hence the lyric “ F your Christ” as opposed to “F Christ”. I think it was intentional with Maynard perhaps knowing if he attacked the whole religion it would weaken the impact of the song. This is of course my opinion. Try Eulogy if you do any more Tool reacts. Happy new year & good luck with the channel.

I came as soon as I could! I'm listening first and then commenting more. But Judith is one of my favorites from APC. Also I love how it shows so much of his love for his mother but anger at her choices and anger at religion which abandoned her but she never stopped believing in. It is always really frustrating when you lose faith, or are not very happy with organized religion/not very religious personally, and you have family who just strongly believe. "How can you believe a kind and just God would let this happen to you?" is very much the sentiment. This is one of my favorite songs to sing along to.
Also wait until you listen to Puscifer. I completely didn't identify that as him. I didn't think his range got that low. lol But yeah I love seeing you react to this. Tool was more my Dad's band I got into later. Puscifer is just this past two years. A Perfect Circle I first listened to as a teenager. They mean a lot to me and I still sing to them now.

Speaking as an atheist and speaking for most that I know. We don't put any energy in not believing. The energy we put in is to counteract the main religion (at least in America) Christianity forcing the beliefs upon everyone politically and in school systems. In this song, it's Maynard voicing his disagreement with his mother who kept her strong faith in the Christian God after her stroke that left her paralyzed. By the way, he loves/d more than anyone/thing. The Tool album 10,000 Days has a lot to do with her.

You are correct about the meaning of the song, and you are right, it is in fact a song written as if hes speaking to his mother, who even tho was being blamed by her church for her ailments, and having them turn their back on her, continued to keep her stong faith.
