My favorite part of the video is after the first chorus where Paz (Paz Lenchantin, the female bass player) is like "OK, no bass part here...let me just fix my hair and go..."
Maynard has written several songs about his mother, Judith Marie. She suffered a debilitating stroke and was left paralyzed after, living for approximately 27 years, and never abandoned her faith in God. I can't remember each of the songs, but they stretch across all three of his bands. After she passed, Wings For Marie (pts. 1 and 2) were released on Tool's "10,000 Days" album - sort of a resolution to the story. If you want more APC - check out "The Doomed," "Talk Talk" and "So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish."
Fun fact! The music video was actually directed by David Fincher, the director of Se7en, and more recently the Netflix anthology Love Death and Robots.
High five to Asia for recognizing Maynard James! He’s in Tool, Perfect Circle, and Puscifier. He does a great song with Milla Jovavich called The Mission. Also from Perfect Circle: 3 Libras, The Hollow, and Magdalena.
Cool reaction guys. This song is about how Maynard couldn’t grasp how his mother despite the fact of being paralyzed for so many years she was still a faithful Christian. You should do the continuation of this: wings for Marie part 1 and 2 from Tool. It’s great great music.
Nope. It’s about others praising her and then talking about her behind her back. He says this in the commentary for the music video. He supported her faith.
Asia hit the nail on the head about Maynard's voice blending with the music. Many people have commented on the fact that, unlike most singers, Maynard's voice is simply another instrument in the band. This is true of every band he's in. Guy's a legend!
Maynard James Keenan. James is his "real" Birthname and Maynard is his nickname from when he was in the military. Keenan is the last name :) Good reaction you all will love the more mellow vibe of this APC band, his 3rd band is Pucifer. Pick any song from any group he is in and it's Gold!
What a great reaction! I subscribed. :) I wanted to comment on why you guys might have thought the song had a "great feel". It's because the song is written in 3/4 timing, as opposed to 90% of songs you hear that are in 4/4 timing. You count the song "1,2,3, 1,2,3" as opposed to "1,2,3,4 1,2,3,4". The timing gives is it a "Waltz" kind of feel, which makes you want to dance when you hear it. Anyways, great reaction, once again. I love that Asia recognized Maynard's voice, I was impressed by that so I subbed.
Maynard is on another level. This song is about his mom Judith. If you want to hear him being emotional do "Wings for Marie part 1 &2" by Tool. They have to be done together. And it's after his mother passed (RIP) You should look up his moms condition before listening. Love yalls videos please keep them coming!
He owns 3 winery's here in AZ and one of the bottles is named Judith which was his mothers name. Not only in 3 bands but a very successful business man. I Cottonwood a few weekends ago hoping to take a tour of his winery, they didn't have one. So I went to his store in Clarkdale hoping to see him but nope not there. He really is a normal person in real life.
When he did passenger with Deftones, Chino said they were working out lyrics and vocal melodies and Maynard wasn't going to sing. Then when they started recording Maynard grab the mic and chino was like "holyshit my band sounds like tool!"
I always try and hook people on deftones with "rocket skates" cuz that song feels like its attacking you. " Be quiet and drive" as was mentioned or "back to school" cuz chino raps. YO ASIA AND BJ!!!! STOP TRYNA TAME THEM EARTH GRABBAHS AND PEEP DEFTONES YO!!!!! WOOOO!!!
The songs for his beloved mother Judith Marie are in different albums. The first song is "Jimmy" off the Aenima Album, you just did the second "Judith" by Perfect Circle, and the last are "Wings for Marie 1&2" off the 10,000 Days album. This is Maynards journey dealing with grief "Judith" to acceptance "Wings of Marie". If you were to do all the songs in that order you will understand the love he has for his mother. The album 10,000 days was dedicated to Judith, after her stroke that left her paralyzed, she lived for 10,000 days which adds up to 27 years.
One of the things about MJK & his music I’ve really come to admire is the fact that he uses his platforms to say SOMETHING instead of just talking about himself all the time …..the guy also has talent in spades 🖤🥶
something like 20 years of listening to this song, and i never knew they had a female band member, lol; guess i ought to have watched their videos, lol
His talk about his mother "Judith Marie" Christian who was paralyzed ten thousands days and finally die, and she always talk about jesus and live in faith. God bless her
APC is my fave band of all time. so many talented artists form other bands make it up. and their song are ALWAYS about something personal, or relevant to our culture
The name of the band is just as deep as anything tool related... look up the historical origin of the term a perfect circle. It involves a king, an artist and divinity.
And sharing your experience of the revelation of these as they land are such an divine gift to share with the 🌎! God Bless you with all your endeavors!
re MJK: It's a bit of everything, He does sound like that live, but Tool and A Perfect Circle, are VERY well Engineered, Mixed and Mastered, so its a combination of all of that, also Tool have amazing Live sound crew as well, they really are the whole package live. I have not seen A Perfect Circle live, but I would be surprised if they were not the same, as they are made up of sessions musicians, guitar tech's and people from other bands, its kind of a super group (Although , to me they are a little bit like Tool "lite" or entry level Tool, but there is nothing wrong with that)
Asia is becoming a little music critic over here I love it! Great job identifying his voice and also comparing TOOL to APC after only 2 minutes of the song. You have more knowledge inside your head than maybe even YOU think you have. Keep it up!
He wrote it for his mom, who was crippled, but kept her faith. (Questioned God) A complete opposite view, is his song 10,000 days (Wings for Marie) where his experience is his mom passing. 😢 And she is so devoted she screamed at the gates saying "Your pillar of faith has arrived, give me my wings!"
You nailed what you said about a perfect circle being more intertwined with maynards voice, and tool the music is more forward and the message chasing it. Very observant!!
What you said about his voice blending into music is so true. Whenever composers react to Tool's songs, they always note how he uses his voice as an instrument. Maynard is amazing.
fun fact - Maynard also did guest vocals on Three Little Pigs by Green Jello/Green Jelly and Danny Carey, drummer for Tool, also played drums for Green Jello/Green Jelly
the song is about his mother that fell ill and became crippled and suffered. he loved her very much, this is a song about gods cruelty. it's been said in this thread, but also more important that people know. rest in peace Judith, you gave the world something I wish you could see.
The song is about his mother, she was a devout christian, genuinely kind hearted, as he says about her. She died from cancer and I think she suffered immensely. He had a serious issue understanding how GOD could let his mother suffer like that. I believe he believes Jesus was an actual person, but just as a historical martyr and not actually the son of GOD. Ive been a tool fan since their inception basically and thats the most clear understanding I have of the song. Maynards nother Judith
I bought this cd shortly after this song came out. Didn't know it was Maynard. I made an offhand remark to my friend that "this sounds like the dude from Tool." He looked at me like I was stupid, and then politely informed me that it was the same guy. Side note: he is in another band called Puscifer, and y'all should check them out if you haven't. The Remedy would be a solid song to start on. ✌
The meaning of the song is important, most definitely……But, gotta’ give props to Paz and Billy on this one!…..They stepped aside, and gave Maynard everything he could ask for to speak his mind about his Mother, Judith Marie….
Maynard once said about the differences of his projects "when Tool is the Brain, Perfect Circle is the heart". I guess he refers to arrangements and songwriting which for Tool are way more complex and differing within one track. If you look at APC its clearly straight forward which doesn't mean the songwriting is weaker, its brilliant but on another level. Love em all for ages now and enjoy Pucifer, too (which again is something completely different). Maynard is just genius (also his wine is really special, btw.)
I read that "Judith" is Maynard's Mother's name. Judith Marie Keenan was a devote Baptist who suffered a paralysing cerebral haemorrhage when Maynard was just 11-years-old. Judith would remain paralysed for 27 years until her death in 2003, and the amount of time Judith spent paralysed would inspire the title track to Tool’s fourth studio album, 10,000 Days. (From Wikipedia).
You know this is Maynard from T00l,2nd band? Of 3 right? Check out his 3rd band-Puscifer Also-this song was named & about his Mother who was paralyzed & sunday school teacher. Listen to lyrics-its deep & not only song he wrote about his Mom-10,000 days-T00L was her tribute
Also side note this whole album I believe was written before Maynard even approached it. Billy howerdel wrote it, and Maynard just shelfed one top corner bicker side in OT babayyy!!!
1 Judith - A Perfect Circle 2 Jimmy - Tool 3 Wings for Marie (pt 1) 4 10000 Days (Wings pt 2) are the songs and order to listen to them to get the whole story of Maynard James Keenan's journey of dealing with his mothers illness, passing, and his love for her.
Maynards Vocals are louder in this and far more the focus, Tool is more a case of each instrument and the vocals have their own space and interact with each other, where as this is more "standard" in its format, its punchy, grungy, yet progy pop Rock, Tool is far more complex and layered and everything happens on a much longer scale of time.
Maynard James Keenan is the greatest song writer to come along since the greats of the late 60's and 70s. Absolutely no doubt about it. All 3 of his bands are incredible. Or credible i should say.
3 bands at the same time currently Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. This song is his anger concerning his mother and God. All his life Judith Marie (Mom) was extremely religious, but one day she got very ill and still never lost her faith. The people in her church abandoned her making her rockstar son pissed off. Maynard rarely pulls the curtain back revealing himself, but he loved his mom dearly. And those who claim to be so good, but leave a member of the flock on her own all the while never losing her faith. His anger is misplaced blaming God for those who actually did his mom wrong. Maynard said Tool is his aggression, APC is his gentle side, and Puscifer is his sense of humor.
Tool is going on tour here soon. Go check them out. Tool and Maynard sound exactly like there recorded music.. Ive seen tool 4 times.. Best of the best
One thing they have in common with "Jinjer", the band makes the music, sends it to the singer, then the singer writes the lyrics, sings the with the music, then sends it back to the band. Anyway, this is sort of a "back to raw" for Maynard, before their music went big with crazy timing and meanings. On their first album before "Sober" came out, they were raw with basic songs. It was good, but like a big step for Tool to go from... it's called "Opiate"...
Maynard is a musical genius. His works are a huge rabbit hole. Be it Tool, A Perfect Circle or Puscifer...take the dive, you will not be sorry...Guaranteed.
Props to Asia for recognizing Maynard's voice so quickly!!!
huge props
That was very impressive
👍
Try passenger by Defstones
@@burbrick I always forget maynard is on that track
Any woman who can pick out Maynard’s voice is a keeper in my book.
Agreed
My favorite part of the video is after the first chorus where Paz (Paz Lenchantin, the female bass player) is like "OK, no bass part here...let me just fix my hair and go..."
Such a simple video but it absolutely enhances the song and yes Paz tying her hair up in the middle is fantastic
It makes me feel tingly in my giblets.
Paz putting her hair up is maybe the most metal thing I've ever seen... sexy too
Cool note, she also is an expert violinist
Yeeesss. I get so turned at that point lol!

approximately 27 years, or ~10,000 days
Definitely need to do 3 Libras by A Perfect Circle
The live version from Leno, please.
Props to Asia for catching the voice and catching the different sound mix of APC and Tool
Fun fact! The music video was actually directed by David Fincher, the director of Se7en, and more recently the Netflix anthology Love Death and Robots.
That makes sense. Thanks for that info!!
High five to Asia for recognizing Maynard James! He’s in Tool, Perfect Circle, and Puscifier. He does a great song with Milla Jovavich called The Mission. Also from Perfect Circle: 3 Libras, The Hollow, and Magdalena.
Paz playing bass in heels is still one of the hottest things I've ever seen in a music video!
When Maynard's involved you know there's some substance involved. Deep song.
Kudos to Asia for recognizing Maynard’s distinct voice right from the beginning (very perceptive).
This song is about ALOT!!! 💯
Its like listening in on a therapy session of the "Anger Stage of Grief'...
Its AMAZING!!! 💯‼
Exactly how I feel every time I listen to it.
This song gives me the chills every time.
Orestes is one of their masterpieces...with a deep lyrics.!!
Maynard's breath control is impeccable. He can hold notes for the longest time. (All while changing pitch throughout the held note)
Soooo many points for recognizing Maynard from Tool on vocals!! (Maynard James Keenan)
Cool reaction guys. This song is about how Maynard couldn’t grasp how his mother despite the fact of being paralyzed for so many years she was still a faithful Christian. You should do the continuation of this: wings for Marie part 1 and 2 from Tool. It’s great great music.
Saved me to writing all this out!
Before “Wings” listen to Tool’s “Jimmy” which is the prelude to this song.
Nope. It’s about others praising her and then talking about her behind her back. He says this in the commentary for the music video. He supported her faith.

You should check out Maynard's other band, Puscifer. "Conditions of my parole" is great but "Humbling River" really captures Maynard's voice.
Country boner !!!!!!

GREAT JOB ASIA, ON SPOTTING MAYNARD’s VOICE SO QUICK🙏💯
Maynard and Corey Taylor. Two of the greats of this day and age. 2 singers...5 bands.

That rocks and great reaction. Song from the gut and real and not just manufactured for radio.
This song is deep because his mom was very religious and died of cancer this song is about no matter how much she prayed she still died
It was a brain aneurysm, she lived paralyzed for 27 years and then passed
