Maynard's mother suffered a stroke in 1976 that left her paralyzed and wheelchair bound until she died 27 years later, or 10,000 days. He wrote this out of anger due to members of his mother's church saying her stroke was due as punishment for her sins, when he knew she had been a devout, god fearing christian her whole life, both before and after her stroke. On the Tool album 10,000 days you should check out the songs Wings for Marie (Pt 1) and 10,000 Days (Wings, Part 2), for further songs about Maynard's mother.

Maynard is not criticizing all of Christianity. He said this about the song on the aMOTION DVD commentary for the video: "The song is called 'Judith', which is my mother's name. She was paralyzed very early on from an aneurysm and it just strengthened her faith, which is fine, because she didn't really have anything other than her faith. But the people around her, marching in like ghouls to tell her how strong in her faith she is and then going home and talking behind her back. It's just amazing the hypocrisy that went on."
And as a staunch Christian, I relate to this bullshit way too fucking much. Its so accurate to the evilness of the church vs. God. And often is why ppl run from christ instead of from Christians who act like their shit don't stink. I grew up in a family exactly like this. I was sex trafficked at 3 for most of my childhood and yet they blamed me for everything, despite knowing the truth. Crazy. I ran from church. I ran from Christians. But never from God/christ.
I have to admit that as a practicing Christian I had a really hard time with this song till my friend forced me to listen to the aMOTION DVD. And, what Maynard was saying felt like he was reading from my diary (if I actually kept one).

when you know what he's saying it's clear as day. when you don't know what he's saying if you don't look up the lyrics it can take years of listening to come close to fully grasping one of his songs. his voice is an instrument.
The song is all about his mother who was a devout worshipper and never did anything wrong. She was then diagnosed with cancer and the song 10,000 days is also about his mother whom lived for exactly 10,000 days after her diagnosis. This song is basically him giving the big middle finger to a god who only wants good, but would do this to the most angelic of persons.
"10,000 days in the fire is long enouoooogh!" Now you need to do Wings for Mar 1 n 2. Such a deep, dark and powerful creation. Maynards's mom was "in the fire
I've wanted to go to one of his concerts for so many years! My brother in law got tickets for one up in I think Detroit that was in an opera house or something with a symphony. I wanted to go so bad, but he decided to take his brother (who I grew up with and we have a love/hate relationship) that he on and off wanted nothing to do with for most of his teen yrs and adulthood cause of his drug problem. I mean, my brother in law would even just show up last minute to pick me up from school unexpectedly, but never either of his brothers. (My brother grew up with his other brother. They didn't necessarily like eachother but never to the point of bullying. My brother even got in trouble for pranking him one time by blowing up a 6ft tall inflatable penis from my sister's bachelorette party and put it in his car...caught on camera putting it in his car at school, of course, but he blew it up at lunch and not a word from the adults ..just laughter.) So he chose to take his brother despite not wanting anything to do with him most of the time rather than me, and I even offered to pay for the ticket he had already gotten, we got along great and were pretty close. A lot of mutual respect. I cut ties with my sister several yrs ago and don't like to call her my sister, but don't know what else to call her. They're divorced now, which is the best for him. My ex husband is best friends with him so I still see him and hear about him on occasion. I told my ex I'm fine with our son being around him and having a close relationship with him, but that he better never take him around my sister...which I don't believe he will with what went down between her and my bro in law.
I agree with Brad on Maynard's voice. It's more with how they decided to mix it. On this first album especially, they mixed his vocals to blend in more like an instrument than lead vocals. I checked him out live recently for the first time and his diction and clarity is spectacular!
When I first heard this song, it was on a Walkman (portable cassette player) that had FM radio. I was in a behavioral reformation program due to bad behaviors as a child. This sound was so unique and different from everything else on the radio at the time. The DJ played the song 3 times in a row. A Perfect Circle has ever been one of my favorite bands.
If you include Jimmy in the saga, there are four parts. Wings 1 and 2 are two different songs, but most reactors listen to them together now. Timeline without adding Pucifer into the fray would be something like: Tool - Jimmy APC - Judith Tool - Wings for Marie Tool - 10,000 Days (Wings for Marie pt 2) I don't think you include Jambi into this story since you could put anyone you've lost in that spot. These others actually tell the story of Maynard and his mother. But music is art and art is to be interpreted by the individual so anything Maynard sings you could relate if you were that zealous.
Don’t worry about making out the words, when you listen enough to the hard stuff, you get an ear for it. Once you can understand lamb of god you are golden
"The Pet" back to back with "Counting Bodys like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums"; "Passive", "The Noose", "Peace, Love & Understanding", "The Package"
A Perfect Circle - The Noose (My Personal Favorite) - Disillusioned - 3 Libras - The Outsider - Imagine - Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm Of The War Drum - Weak And Powerless
I've just discovered y'all's channel and I love it. I've stayed up five hours too late binging on your reactions.. I'm so going to be late for classes tomorrow 😂
Lex! You are a Maynard fan! I love watching you listening to his music whether it’s APC or Tool. Your reaction is infectious!! I’m a huge fan of Maynard and have been since 93. A lot of people have a hard time getting into Tool but you seem to get it immediately. I love it! You should listen to “10,000 days Wings for Marie part 2” by Tool. It’s really deep and is about his Mother Judith Marie. I got the chills the first time I heard it and I think you will love it too! Wear headphones so you can hear all of the little nuances….
Yeah, seeing the lyrics in context with the music drives the meaning. I can't understate how important it is to hear the first two lines up to, "Fuck your God!" Sets the whole tone of the song. (Pull lyrics up on your phone, Brad!)
Before I truly knew how to decipher lyrics that line infuriated me. It was only after a few years I was able to realize how important the word “your” was in that lyric. He didn’t just say “God “ he said” your god “. The one that you believe in that makes you think you have to pay for your own sins, be punished for your own actions, the one that has a cult following where they excommunicate you for said punishments. When I realized we don’t follow the same God as people who thought this way, I understood the lyrics. Religious or not, which I know he’s not, I think that’s how he meant it rather than just saying “f god” in general. Could be off base but lyrics are meant for interpretation so🤷🏼♂️ lol
@@justinwilder3514 You got it. Maynard said something to the effect of "I'm not saying fuck the actual God. I'm saying 'Fuck YOUR god'... Look at Genesis 1:1: 'In the beginning, there was the Word'... JHVH... translated as Light... or Love. Not judgement, not punishment, not isolation... Fuck whatever 'god' that's supposed to be... God is LOVE... Might as well just close the book after that." Many follow no religion, but know and revere THAT God. Myself included.
@@ju4408 exactly, I’m “Lutheran” but we follow what Luther preached not him himself. A man who stands up by himself to the corruption of Catholicism in their country is someone I want to learn from. Denominations breed confusion and that leads to this kinda thinking, whereas having a relationship with Christ means even if it’s all just made up, all you ever did was try to be the nicest un-judge mental person you could’ve been.
@@justinwilder3514 Amen. I'm "non-religious", but privately say I've met God face-to-face. Frankly don't care if anyone knows what I mean by that. It's Love/Light, period. I was raised Catholic, so learned lots about Luther (which actually made me a fan, instead of thinking of him as some enemy, as I was apparently supposed to do). He was imperfect, like anyone and everyone, but on the side of people helping others. I'm truly surprised he wasn't murdered like most of his type. My brain reflexively thinks of any "belief system" as "B.S.", but I embrace the parable nature and metaphor nature of all religions. Help one another. The End. If people treated people as well as we treat our pets, Heaven would be reality on Earth.
I can hear the anger he feels for his mother's faith and i can also hear a story about woman who kept her faith through the 10,000 days of fire. It's a deep song to me.
Im with your gf or.wife when you asked her if she listened to words and she said no way Ive been listening to ApC over 20 yrs. And i still dont. The instrumentals are mesmerizing enough 4 me. You feel cool in a way after listening to these guys. Thats what the instrumentals do to me.
With rock and metal music, it's honestly best to just let the song take you on the ride without worrying too much about the lyrics on the first listen. That's probably why they mix the vocals like that in these songs. They want you to hear the entire band do their thing. She had the right idea. Just get into the groove and appreciate ALL of the instruments including the vocals. You can always listen again with the lyrics!
Definitely have the lyrics up for Wings for Marie 1+2. I usually wouldn’t recommend doing that with Tool but these particular songs hit different with the lyrics combined with the music. It’s a slower pace too so it’s not so distracting trying to decipher the sound and lyrics at the same time.
The lyrics are interesting. His mom was a faithful person and suffered a stroke. She never stopped believing. Maynard, however, has a different view. He has a Vinyard in Arizona. He spread some of his moms ashes on a certain part of it and called the wine from his Vinyard "Judith"
the whole thing is retarded. acting like god MADE someone have a stroke. u could maybe be mad about god not healing her, but to blame god for things going wring in life is dumb. I just got a speeding ticket, thanks god!
Judith (Maynard’s mother) had a stroke at 29 and was confined to a wheelchair until she passed in 2003- about 10,000 days later. Check that album out for Wings for Marie, 10,000 Days and Viginti Tres (the Maynard’s mom’s trilogy.)
Ooh yes. This takes me back to first hearing this song, how different it was from Tool, and just IN LOVE with the guitar, with the whole song. I don't care for Tool anymore, but APC and another of Maynard's bands, Puscifer, are still legit. One of my favorites is "3 Libras" by APC. I used to know how to play that on guitar.
I TOLD YOU. LOL. Glad you got to that one quick. As I commented on the Tool video, the lyrics Maynard writes are beyond just words being sung. Check out "Pastor Reacts To Judith".
A lot of rock music has singers who are not easily understood. That makes the music more interesting to me. If the singer is good the emotion comes through even if the exact lyrics don't. You can always read the lyrics later.
Song’s is about Maynard James Keenan's mother, Judith, she was paralyzed when Maynard was 11. She stayed paralyzed until she died years later. She kept faith in God the whole time. Maynard had quite the hard time accepting his mother's death, and her beliefs, which often conflicted with his.
So glad you finally chose to react to this one. I knew when I saw how much you both enjoyed Tool that you would also like A Perfect Circle. 13th Step is personally my favorite album from this band but Emotive has some pretty good ones. Check out Maynard's cover of John Lennon's Imagine sometime.
Y’all gotta do the thing like Jamel does and have the lyrics pulled up alongside each video so u get the message as well, cheers y’all liked and shared 👍👍👍
The problem with having the lyrics is that people get distracted by trying to understand them instead of really listening to the music. My thinking is that you can always read and dissect the lyrics after you've heard the song, but you can't go back and feel what it was like having the full muscial experience for the first time. So I'm with Lex on this one.
@@Xenon0000000000001 That's a good point! I think it depends on the band/song, but yeah, usually, it's best to just go into it totally blind and then analyze after.
Again it's just so WONDERFUL that Lex "gets" the vibe of metal songs SO MUCH more than Brad!!! You GOTTA just love the musical vibe to this stuff rather than picking it all apart analytical like, UGH!!!!

I cant make out my comment....... it is what it is
thank you Lex for as always putting a smile on my face :)
Maynard had some strong pipes back then. This was early 2000's.
I like how you guys explore all music, even from my days in high school days with MTV on after school everyday.
Badass. I requested this. You guys are awesome
Big Chavelle fan for a long time...this was awesome to watch. Nailed it.
This is one of the best rock videos ever filmed.
Lex be feeling it. That's what's up
"Jimmy" by Tool is the first song in the Judith Trilogy. This song was second and "Wings Pt 1 and 2" are the third. Do Wings last.
If you include Jimmy in the saga, there are four parts. Wings 1 and 2 are two different songs, but most reactors listen to them together now. Timeline without adding Pucifer into the fray would be something like:
Tool - Jimmy
APC - Judith
Tool - Wings for Marie
Tool - 10,000 Days (Wings for Marie pt 2)
I don't think you include Jambi into this story since you could put anyone you've lost in that spot. These others actually tell the story of Maynard and his mother. But music is art and art is to be interpreted by the individual so anything Maynard sings you could relate if you were that zealous.
You missed 10000 days my guy
@@Dyrtbag68Jimmy Def kicks off the "Judith Songs." I thought Jambi is about Maynard's son, I could be wrong
@Big Homie Steve The Metal Head I concur, fun little ditty but it's the Jimmy riff so I always listen to them together
Cold & ugly then Jimmy...I've always thought that song was the beginning of his process.
Don’t worry about making out the words, when you listen enough to the hard stuff, you get an ear for it.
Once you can understand lamb of god you are golden
Such a banger! Once again loved your reaction. Keep on being awesome u guys
Knowing that you like the song more after seeing the lyrics makes me love your reactions more.
"The Pet" back to back with "Counting Bodys like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums"; "Passive", "The Noose", "Peace, Love & Understanding", "The Package"
A Perfect Circle - The Noose (My Personal Favorite)
- Disillusioned
- 3 Libras
- The Outsider
- Imagine
- Counting Bodies Like Sheep To The Rhythm Of The War Drum
- Weak And Powerless
I think it's awesome that this video was directed by David Fincher.
Might as well just close the book after that."
Many follow no religion, but know and revere THAT God.
This track fucks with my struggle for faith to this day
This song gets better over time...
I really like homegirl she seems genuinely happy to listen to new music.. I love this band so much
Im with your gf or.wife when you asked her if she listened to words and she said no way
Ive been listening to ApC over 20 yrs. And i still dont. The instrumentals are mesmerizing enough 4 me.
You feel cool in a way after listening to these guys. Thats what the instrumentals do to me.
Along with all the other recommendations for Perfect Circle songs, Passive is one of my absolute favorites.
this is my fave band of all time. ANY song on Mer de Norms, 13th Step, eMotive cd's are amazing
I totally agree Lex, this is definitely one of my favorites, the sound is incredible 👍
Same. Took me about three listens, probably in my top ten songs now.
The lyrics are interesting. His mom was a faithful person and suffered a stroke. She never stopped believing. Maynard, however, has a different view. He has a Vinyard in Arizona. He spread some of his moms ashes on a certain part of it and called the wine from his Vinyard "Judith"
They literally say this in the video
For 27 years his mother was wheelchair bound before her death.
@@CoboProdz Ok and he’s explaining it to lex and Brad since they don’t know the meaning behind the song
Maynard’s view in this song was all about calling about the hypocrites in her church, not his mother believing.
the whole thing is retarded. acting like god MADE someone have a stroke. u could maybe be mad about god not healing her, but to blame god for things going wring in life is dumb. I just got a speeding ticket, thanks god!
That's a David Fincher video. He made the detective/horror movie "Seven"
I love Howerdels side vocals in this one...he lets it out
You guys should read his book. It's very good and gives a lot of insight into his life.
Did it all for youuuuuuuuuuu !!!!
You guys should check out his other band Pucifer. I highly recommend the humbling river
I TOLD YOU.
You can always read the lyrics later.
she'll love it,he'll say he say something about liking the lyrics.
Oh yeah this is a pretty freaking good song,Long live rock ‘n’ roll🤘
Song’s is about Maynard James Keenan's mother, Judith, she was paralyzed when Maynard was 11. She stayed paralyzed until she died years later. She kept faith in God the whole time. Maynard had quite the hard time accepting his mother's death, and her beliefs, which often conflicted with his.
A lot of dark emotion expressed by our man Maynard on this
When Paz puts her hair up, I can take on the world.
Brad you’re getting better with the pauses lol
So glad you finally chose to react to this one. I knew when I saw how much you both enjoyed Tool that you would also like A Perfect Circle. 13th Step is personally my favorite album from this band but Emotive has some pretty good ones. Check out Maynard's cover of John Lennon's Imagine sometime.
Paz....thank you for that!
Y’all gotta do the thing like Jamel does and have the lyrics pulled up alongside each video so u get the message as well, cheers y’all liked and shared 👍👍👍
Jamel is the man
The problem with having the lyrics is that people get distracted by trying to understand them instead of really listening to the music.
Just a classic, beautiful.
I really hope you do more APC! I suggest "The Noose" or "Passive"
And Blue
and gravity
nah, 3 libras
Brad: soooo you paying attention to the lyrics?
Lex: absoLUTLY NOT!
My Sunday school teacher said I have to wright ,A Perfect Circle,on the chalk board each Sunday a million times,I said no problem ol Battle Axe.
