A little context:
Maynard’s mother, Judith Marie, suffered a stroke and as a result, was wheelchair-bound for the rest of her life. But despite that, she continued to hold strong to her Christian faith. As the lyrics to this song make clear, Maynard does not share that faith. Although, his feelings for his mother’s continued belief evolved. When she passed away, he wrote the lyrics to “Wings for Marie” and “10,000 Days” for the Tool album 10,000 Days. Lyrics that helped me with my own mother’s death.
I recommend that you give those songs a listen some day so you can fully appreciate the difference from the vitriol shown in “Judith”.
I'd love to see them take a look at Wings for Marie
Getting to see those songs live was one of the best moments at a concert for me. 10,000 Days has a part that makes me tear up EVERY. TIME.
Beautiful songs.
"Jimmy" is another one of his mom and him dealing with what happened to her... Such an underrated song.
U said it perfectly man its a grate song.
Also 10000 days is about 26 years. Which is how long his mother was half paralyzed
You two interpret the lyrics exactly as he meant them. I really appreciate that about you two. Not just this song or this genre but every song you two listen to. Ty. Truly unbiased opinions. 👍👏
I disagree about the meaning of lyrics, not just this song, but any song, or any poem. The writer has a certain idea, meaning when writing it, but as soon as it's released, the original meaning loses shapes and it changes, transforms into a shape that is provided by the reader, listener. The new meaning doesn't make the original meaning... meaningless (sorry, couldn't resist), but to me, as a listener in this case, it may be nothing more than just a vague guide in order to help me reach my own interpretation of it.
They genuinely listen as freethinkers...the message is always received when the invitation is there. Killer job guys!
Beat me to saying the same thing.
Yes! I love that they didn't over-research it before hand.
Maynard’s mother Judith suffered a stroke that left her paralyzed, but she never gave up on her faith.
True faith.
Nailed it.
@@ectomorphine4609 All hail the jug of milk.
Addam1978 I’ll bet she was happier than most of us that aren’t...
Jesus is completely awesome...
Exactly
Don't know if anyone has mentioned that F**k your god! is the only instance on the entire album where he swears. He saved it for that one sentiment.
And in that i respect Maynard. That sentiment is soooo heavy. Im a christian and no fan of Maynard (in fact i hate Tool lol) but as a human stuck on this shitball of a planet and whose struggled with my faith when i lost the person i loved more than my own life, i get that blind rage.
Great point. I didn't even realize that, and it makes it way more powerful.
The guys from the Growth Project spotted that straight away. Search for Pastor Reactions to see their video. They're genuinely awesome guys.

If they do Puscifer then they gotta start with Toma, Telling Ghosts or Momma Sed.

There are better puscifer songs imo (agostina is a personal favourite); but the Remedy is a great gateway to them.

A perfect circle - Orestes
This underrated song happens to be their most beautiful. There is only one like it.
Orestes at Red Rocks with Billys back up vocals is probably APC's best performance ever.
My thoughts exactly. It's my favorite track of theirs on any album.
My favorite of all time
favorite APC song
unless they just do one of those random picks, this track will not receive enough support to blip on their radar
Maynard carried that last lyric for like 20 seconds at full throttle.
Brings me to tears. Every. Single. Time. Not ashamed
I've seen them 3 times live.
There are VERY few vocalists I've heard live that can replicate their album performance near 100% accurately, and sound great live.
Maynard is something else; The guy seems inhuman at times.
When I saw this on their first tour, my jaw was on the floor. He made it seem like he even had more to give. He was definitely emotionally charged during the performance.
The Noose is my favorite APC song. 3 Libras and Pet are great as well.
my favorite is 3 libras but second is the noose
My favorite is The Outsider, Orestes and Talk talk, but all their albums are amazing. I love Rose, Thomas, The noose, The Hollow, Weak and powerless, etc. Man, this band is amazing
Blue is great.
The Noose was my favourite song this year live in Zürich
You have good taste, The Noose never fails to give me chills, such a great song I don't see mentioned enough. Throw in Passive as well and you've got top shelf APC.
Dear God, you’ve reviewed my favorite song ever. So hyped
The difference between Tool and APC is that APC is usually simpler, softer, has shorter songs, and are more alternative rock than progressive metal / hard rock. I slightly prefer Tool to APC but APC is still incredible. They still display the fantastic musicianship that Tool does, but their songs are more straightforward with a standard structure. Oh also this song leans on the heavier side for them.
Definitely do "The Outsider" for your next APC pick though! It's the "Judith" of their second album; guaranteed you'll both love it!
Good explanation & hit the nail on the head ❤
Agree👍👍
Typically in 6/8 vs 9/8/7 times.
@@bryansimms6245 yep! (kinda like this song haha)
yeah, reading this I see I shouldn't have bothered to write my opinion on the difference, that's it...
Judith was Maynard James Keenan's mother's name. She was a very religious person. One day she had a stroke that left her in a wheelchair partially paralyzed. This stroke only strengthened her belief in God - something that Maynard found to be pretty ironic. The lyrics in this song reflect how he felt about the whole situation.
Now I'm just waiting for Albatross - Corrosion of Conformity!
I like "Heal My Wounds" better, but either one would be cool.

The live version with the extended Danny Carey drum solo is epic!
A Perfect Circle is about as much Billy Howerdel's band as it is Maynard's, he's the one who got it going in the first place after all. In terms of comparison to Tool, thematically there are a lot of overlaps but they're explored in slightly different, more "radio friendly" ways, and in terms of the music Tool are a progressive metal band, A Perfect Circle are an alternative rock band, so the two don't muscle in on each other too much. I absolutely love all of Maynard's work, Puscifer are absolutely sick as well.
Uneven Structure - Frost/Hail
i'm sure the fact that Billy was tools guitar tech is the reason you hear some similarities between apc and tool.
Totally agree. Billy is a totalluy underrated creature
This ^^ Maynard just "fronts" [backs?] Billy's band lol
If you liked the drumming at the end, you should check out their song "The Noose" which has an awesome drum groove. APC's drummer on their first two albums, Josh Freese, is different than Tool's Danny Carey, but still a top tier drummer and one of the most versatile in the entire business. He's great.
As for the difference between APC and Tool, the former is a bit less progressive metal and more alternative rock/metal. Generally they have shorter songs, that are also generally not as complex and with more typical song structures and time signatures, but they are still very creative and definitely morso than most modern alt rock, I'd say. The drumming is definitely different, but both bands have two of the best rock drummers active. While Tool uses their bass and guitar about equally for rhythm and melody, I would say APC, while still having good bass work (especially on some particular songs) the guitar is a bit more prominent as a lead instrument with short solos and cool lead lines/licks and they make more consistent use of a rhythm guitarist in their grooves unlike Tool who only has one guitar player. This is very likely due to lead guitarist Billy Howerdel actually being the co-founder and writer of most of the instrumental melodies for A Perfect Circle. But generally, APC isn't quite as complex or intricate and is a bit more straight forward alternative/art rock, but that is by no means a negative. I would say they are more accessible, but that their songs are also a bit more varied in sound (even if most aren't as complex as most Tool songs) due to not being as focused on the progressive or metal elements. But they still have some killer riffs, leads, drumming and, of course, singing and lyrics courtesy of Maynard James Keenan. The two bands are both distinct, but both equally brilliant. Some people may prefer one over the other and that is understandable and cool, but APC is super talented just like Tool, just a slightly different flavor. That's how I would put it anyway.
Cheers, love the reactions and like the polls, but I would say still choose at random from the suggestions too since sometimes the most popular song requests aren't the best. Judith is a great song though and I definitely look forward to seeing you guys react to more APC!
Citron A long ass comment, means ur a devoted Tool/APC/Puscifer fan
Nice to read such a long comment and agree with every word. Well said friend.
Maynard knows how to choose his beat keepers. Tim Alexander from primus also contributed to the albums i believe.

It's called Judith. It's about his mom. So is 10,00 days....
Maynard to me is such an anomaly. I haven't really resonated with any other vocalist like Maynard. You can FEEL his emotions when he belts out. His range is amazing, and I REALLY enjoy his gruff, pissed off vocal delivery. To top it off, his lyrics are also something that has helped me and been somewhat therapeutic to me in life. That may sound corny and Maynard probably wouldn't give 2 fucks either, but I still stand that way lmao
You haven't listened to enough music.
@@jos7886 Lmao, what a pretentious thing to say. So me favoring a vocalist over most others I've heard means I haven't listened to enough music... How does that work?
@@Tool_jira_shugg I dunno man I'm not interested in an internet argument with you. I'm far too important to be be bothered with that right now.
@@jos7886 LOL troll detected
Listen to “Daddy” by Korn. Jon Davis, the singer, was molested as a child, and his parents did not believe him and the abuse continued. In “Daddy,” he has a legitimate emotional breakdown in the song, and at first his bandmates thought it was just him channeling his rage. They didn’t know what to do, so they kept playing and what followed sends chills down my spine as Jon comes unglued and spews endless rebukes against his abuser.
It is a song so deeply personal, Korn NEVER performed it live for 20 years. He never could face that song, and even if he could, he couldn’t go back to that place emotionally.
He performs it now that his abuser is dead. He has healed over the years, but it is still very hard for him to do it. He says he only performs it because he knows his voice can reach children who endure the same things he endured, and wants them to know he has been there too.
It is a damn DAMN hard song to hear - for me at least. To have a meltdown during recording, and still publish it on your FIRST album takes some serious guts.

Sam Sommers it’s so good, and shows his evolution of his understanding and acceptance of his mother’s faith. That one makes me cry.
@@kpag3030 same.
Maynard's Trilogy to his Mum (Judith / Wings For Marie Pts 1 & 2) are an incredible insight into the soul of a human being. The progression and how he comes to terms with his Mum's faith is so touching. And I agree Wings For Marie Pt 2 is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. The lyrics hit so hard
Agreed! You’ve got to get the full picture and the “coming to terms” moment for Maynard on his moms situation.
@@ameliacharles2284 and then Horizons by Puscifer to follow
Maynard is a special person in music. PERIOD
I agree , he does what he wants with music , and how he wants to do it. Doesn't let anything hold him back. He surrounds himself with brilliant musicians and goes to the next level with them . He is a brilliant and well-educated man.
Maynard also has a THIRD! group called Puscifer. They have a song called "Horizons" that is a must-hear. It's about his mother, Judith. He has a lot of songs about her spread across his 3 groups.
I feel like...as a Tool and APC fan, that Puscifer is almost like a joke. I mean Tool & APC are pretty serious most of the time, but is Puscifer just his "let go"? His release? If not, what should I listen to from Puscifer?
felyciti a lot of Tool fans have an issue with Puscifer because the fans take themselves too seriously. Going from 3rd Eye to Cuntry Boner is uncomfortable them. They don't seem to see the art in play. But as far as Puscifer goes, I tbink it reall shows us how creative and funny Maynard can be. I would recommend sticking to Conditions of my Parole and Moneyshot albums, they are easier fo digest. The songs Momma Sed, Rev 22:20, and the Undertaker would probably fit your taste as well.
@@felyciti He actually created music under the Puscifer parole as a means to market his wine, which then became his most utilised channel of musical creativity. Like Mark said, most fans take Tool, APC and themselves too serious as Maynard is a super goofy guy and it is clear within all of his music and performances.
@@felyciti definitely Conditions of My Parole album. If you're a fan of Maynard as an artist, you can appreciate this album. "Horizons" is my personal favorite.

Absolutely LOVE Blue
This is one of their more Tool sounding songs. They have a few songs similar to this but they have a lot more mellow and melodic stuff as well. And while Tool songs often feel very meticulously put together I feel like these guys kind of go with the flow a bit more.
Also the polls were great, I'm definitely on board if you guys keep doing them.
Cleve Crudgington i dont think it sounds like tool at all except for the vocals. Guitars and drums are totally different in sound and playing style. Its an amazing rock song that links to the Tool songs about Judith. Just my observation.
This is one of APC's earlier songs, too. I think the Tool influence was more prevalent on their first album than subsequent albums. Pet or The Noose would be another good one that's got a bit of a Tool vibe, but is more evolved into their own style.
I think APC originally was more like a radio friendly Tool. Songs were tighter and less epic and more accessable.
Cleve Crudgington - True. Their new album sounds nothing like Tool.
@@dohoeijmans2432 The riffs are really reminescent of Tool, kind of hard and heavy but with an hypnotic feel, especially when there Is some delay and in the slide parts. Just influence though, the style Is totally different

Maynard has come out saying that he writes with two different minds with these bands, - he writes for Tool with a very masculine mindset and he writes for APC with a feminine mindset. He also describes it as left of the brain for Tool (the functional, directional, thinking side) and the right side for APC (the linguistic, emotional, reasoning side)... - His words, not mine, - but he definitely thinks there's a difference, either way.
The other guys for the two bands are also very different musicians and write in different ways, - you'll need a few more songs of each to nail down how you think they play.
I didn't know that, thanks for the insight! Makes perfect sense now.
I also didn’t know that but can immediately agree with it. APC is softer and more ethereal in comparison to TOOL. TOOL is intentionally aggressive and thought provoking.

Just saw them live in Baltimore. Josh freese wasn’t there.😢 but it was still awesome
You should check out their cover of John Lennon's "Imagine". It's legitimately badass and fitting of the times compared to when it was written imo.
As much as I love Maynard, their Imagine is horrible.
Now all y'all need to react to is some Puscifer and you'll have one deadly Maynard trifecta
Definitely, it would be hard to pick one song though considering the vast span of style that the songs cover. It is almost as if a listening of the entire Maynard catalog would be ideal to grasp his capabilities as an artist. That doesn't mean I don't want them to do it. I hope they do, i just don't know how to convince them to listen to his catalog.
@@noonenow8515 Agreed. There's too much to cover.
@@themawsjawz_9491 Conditions of My Parole, Rev 22:20, Cuntry Boner, or The Arsonist.
@@noonenow8515 the humbling river is a good start as well
Indigo Children? Vagina Mine? Queen B?
The emotion in this song is beautiful. I love MJK!
Mr. Bungle please
Ahahahahahahaha! Yes!
Yes! Carousel or My ass is on fire.
Travolta the music video
Naw a little to weird, some Faith no More would work better, midlife crisis or epic.
“Excuse me, I am lost please help me.”
You guys are by far the best non rock/metal-head reactors on RUclips. I love how you understand the appeal of all those songs although it's not your personal taste in music.
TESSERACT - Of Matter (Live at Sphere Studios). Gotta check this out! Amazing!
3 Libras another great one. The build up on Judith to the end, amazing
Another Maynard band Puscifer : Conditions of My Parole
Yes! I'm also partial to the Remedy.
Yeess!
Vagina Mine is dope.
smoke and mirrors
Hard to believe this song is 18 years old. I can remember the first time this was played on Triple J all those years back, still one of my favourite songs and albums.
Wow I really enjoyed that you guys loved this so much. The polls are awesome. I’ve been requesting the band Chevelle for some time now and I think there are some definite crossover characteristics between APC and them that you would enjoy. Chevelle is alternative metal like APC and had some big hits around the same time and are still making music. I would love to see a poll for Chevelle.
marvelmaniac88 yes! I love Chevelle!
Gotta Start with Point #1
Judith is actually the name of Maynard's mother, she was paralyzed for quiet some time, I'm not sure what illness she had, I think it might've been cancer, but this song was written while she was still alive I believe, so this his feelings towards how he felt about his mother keeping her faith strong while she was going through this illness. The Tool album '10,000 Days' is a reference to how long she suffered before she died (some 27+ years) the song of the same name is in memory of her and is the polar opposite of the anti-god lyrics in Judith, that one is more paying homage to how great she was to him.
Edit: It was actually a stroke, I believe this happened when Maynard was 11 years old; referenced in the Tool song "Jimmy"
I believe 'eat the elephant' by APC is about her as well.
she had an anurism(?) when he was young and was debilitated. He then had to go live with his dad because she couldn't even take care of herself.
@@Kharmatos13 if you read his book he did take care of her when this happened. He saw some of the parish criticize her and they said she deserved the stroke. Judith thought it was to much for a young boy, that's when he went to live with his dad. His dad was a teacher and wrestling coach, Maynard was a wrestler and track person under his fathers guidance. His book is an interesting journal.
Maynard has 3 main bands and has been referred to as such: Tool is the Brain, A Perfect Circle is the heart, and Puscifer is the loins. This says a lot about the differences between them, such as the mood, tone, rhythm, lyric content, vocal style, and are all 3 amazing in completely different ways.
Now you HAVE to do 10,000 Days.
YES! Not just 10,000 Days but Wings for Marie AND 10,000 Days. They're 2 parts of the same song. DO IT! PLEASE!
@@judsonl8990 I normally don't comment on these videos but jesus christ those two songs would blow their minds. They 100% should.
@@eis27182818 absolutely! I love those songs. They give me chills!
I love how you guys really go outside of your normal musical tastes. Welcome to the world of metal heads lol
Electric Wizard - Funeralopolis
Funeralopolis or Dopethrone. I always like to play the latter for people and say "Oh, and the bass hasn't hit yet" just as the drums are coming in.
How about some Faith No More? They're always overlooked and Mike Patton can sing his ass off.
I'd second that. The new stuff is legit.
watching people react to something you have known is amazing, for a long time, is fun.
Exactly!
Mer De Noms takes the cake for my favorite album of all time for a REASON
agree sir.
Judith is great (I wouldn't call it mid-tier at all, it is definitely one of their better songs), but I can't believe 'Weak and Powerless' didn't crush everything for requests. I've always been a fan of 'The Package' as well, and 13th Step album is still one of my favorites in general. You might also find their anti-war album of mostly cover songs to be interesting, particularly in their decisions about how to do the songs differently.
APC tends to be more melodic than Tool, and they don't experiment with the structural aspects of music the same way Tool does. More of APC's music is lower energy/softer than Tool's as well, Judith happens to be one of their heavier, angrier pieces.
If you like APC, you'd probably like Maynard's personal project, Puscifer. There are quite a few good songs from Puscifer; while it has its own unique qualities, it definitely leans more towards APC than Tool in terms of feel, with a dash of Maynard's very specific sense of humor thrown into several of the songs.
I agreed until you said for them to go check out Puscifer?!" No It just ruins everything. And I've even seen them in concert, and although I get everything Maynard does many people will not!"~ So yeah' no.
