The song is about his mother Judith Marie Keenan, who had a stroke and was reliant on a wheelchair for the rest of her life, yet still believed in Christianity. Also if you wanna hear more of Billy singing he has a side project called Ashes Divide where he sings.
It's deeper than that. 10,000 Days and Wings of Marie gives the closure to his mother's religious spirit. He learned to embrace HER spiritual experience. Not the followers but the true leader of her church.
First you have to go back to the Jimmy that's what his mother called him😊 the second part is Judith wish you were listening to now and you have to go to tool 10,000 Days two-headed wings for Marie one and two it's like his closure and all his anger have been let go that he has a new song
The song is “clear” when you know the story of Maynard’s childhood and the love for his mother. Also, what that loss did to him emotionally and spiritually to get to the songs he sings about his mom. APC has a sound that is just amazing! ALL of their songs are beautiful!
Right? Like this is the most beautiful and painful love song if you know the context and backstory. The anger that comes from watching a loved one suffer. To be so angry at the god you believe in that by faith logic is the one in control of your suffering. I also love how the lyrics change slightly in the repeated refrains. Hateful spear spiteful spear .. those minor changes in refrains that repeat are challenging because you can’t go on autopilot, you have to be very in the moment and focused on what you are singing when. He does it with the musical phrasing as well, although the part I’m thinking of is from a different song. The lyrics of the repeated lines are the same, but first time it is sung with one melody, then next time a slightly different note progression or timing, and then a third time in a different variation. And pretty sure at least two if not all of them are classically trained musicians. Perfect Circle has truly incredible musical vision and interconnects songs and sounds and albums in ways that are next level. And I only listen to some of their stuff peripherally, I don’t even consider myself a proper fan.
Judith Marie the unconditional one. This song, the Wings for Marie parts 1 and 2 from 10000 days (album named after roughly the time Judith lived after the stroke, about 20 yrs) and especially Jimmy (Maynard's real name is James Herbert Keenan). In Jimmy he talks about how he was eleven when she was gone, referring to his mom
It's a very personal song for MJK as it's the story of his mom, Judith, who was a very strong believer. She had a stroke and was then paralyzed in a wheelchair for the rest of her life but despite that, was still a believer hence Maynard saying things like "He did this" as he never understood how she could still believe after what happened to her.
wings for Marie pt 1&2 from Tool is a good fallow up for this song as they all deal with the emotions of MJK around his feelings of his mother's faith in relation to her health. I really enjoy seeing pastors and other's people of faith reacting to this song. now you have to listen to some pusifier MJK other, other band. the humbling river, the remedy or moma sed are some of my fav's
Maynard is an extremely interesting person, and I would give almost anything to be able to meet him someday even though i know that it will probably never happen... I love all of his music..
Maynards songwriting style is multi-layered and has multiple meanings. You get from it what you want to get from it. You listen more, you get something more. It's what makes him such a great songwriter as is with all art, it's the layers.
Next time you need more A Perfect Circle and Billy, watch A Perfect Circle - Orestes, Live at Red Rocks. Billy has some killer harmonies with Maynard. Also you've almost reached a Maynard James Keenan trifecta, you need to do a Puscifer song.
I liked this song since it came out back when I was in high school and I still like it today. Another song that I liked from them in high school was "3 Libra's", you should check it out for your second A Perfect Circle reaction.
As others already mentioned the song relates to her mother, Judith Marie Keenan. Maynard over time wrote a few lyrics to songs that kind of tell the tale. On Tool's second album "Aenima" the song "Jimmy" (which is what his mother called him when he was young) is about Maynard looking back at his young self, when he was 11 and his mother suffered the aneurysm that paralysed her and how he dealt with then in comparison to his present self. Then there's this one, "Judith" by A Perfect Circle, which is basically he letting out all of his frustration regarding her fervourant christianity despite everything she's been through. Lastly there's the two song's in the album "10000 days" by Tool (which alludes to the round number of days his mother was paralyzed) which are "Wings for Marie (Pt 1)" and "10000 days (Wings Pt 2)" which is basically him dealing with her death. These two songs are meant to be listened together.
As I'm sure others have stated, Judith was Maynard's Mother. There are several songs he has written for her over the years. From anger to acceptance about the matter. Check out: Jimmy, Wings for Marie, 10,000 days (wings for Marie part 2).
Judith (Maynards mother) had a stroke and was left in a wheelchair for 10,000 days (27 years and a tool album) before she passed. She was extremely religious at the funeral he overheard members of the church talking about how god was making an example of her for her sins and she got what she deserved.... and this is how Maynard went off...... Billy Howerdel (the main guitarist) said they were recording when he left for the funeral. When he got back Maynard walked into the studio laid down the vocals in 1 take and walked out and they re-did the music to fit. Noone knew it was coming.
YES! Maynard has the Midas touch. He's fronted like 6 different bands, and all of them are great. This is my fav APC song. That hair twist..............
an all time favorite song, one of my absolute all time favorite videos (directed by David Fincher!) and favorite "cool" scene when bassist Paz ties her hair in a knot JUST in time for her to pick up her bass part again
Great reaction! This is Maynard in his 'angry' mode. As others have pointed out, it's a very personal song to him - regarding his mother, her being paralyzed after a stroke, and spent the next 27+ years confined to a wheelchair, and her steadfast faith to Christianity, of which he VERY much questioned! That's the viewpoint he's taking here. I HIGHLY suggest checking out the Tool songs Wings For Marie (Pt. 1) & 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) as a contrast to this song, and definitely pay attention to the lyrics - just a forewarning - it's a gut punch of a song series! Maynard is a little less angry. FYI - 10,000 Days is the name of the album. Significant as 10,000 days is approx. how long Judith suffered until her passing. Probably the most personal Tool song Maynard has ever written. Cheers!
Fun fact: If the style of the video seems at all familiar to you, it's probably because David Fincher directed it (Fight Club, Se7en). Once you see it, it's hard not to see it.
I think the recorded version Maynard does all vocals but as they overlap they show both singing in the video. That being said, I think Howerdel does some backup vocals on the record. If you want to hear his singing voice, Billy Howerdel did put out a solo album in 2022 "What Normal Was" where he does all the vocals. That record is much more in a 80s Depeche Mode and the Cure vibe.
3:26 - the hair tying in the middle of the song gets me every time! Total badassery! 😂 I also never can get used to Maynard with just normal long hair. He has always had at least part of his head shaved. The "normal" rocker look just looks strange on him for some reason.
The reason why Maynard is the king. He can write a song where he literally screams "F*** your god" and yet instead of just being a song filled with blind hate he slips lines like "It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side" referencing the Spear of Destiny that was alleged to pierce the side of Jesus as he hung on the cross and is sometimes credited with his death instead of the crucifixion. That kind of reference can't be made by the ignorant, he knows exactly what he's saying.
Its not just about Judiths lasting belief in Christianity, others got it close with the church, but basically after she had the aneurysm that left her partially paralized her church basically told her she didnt need treatment if her faith in god was true she would be healed, and when she wasnt they basically told her that her sin and lack of faith was why she was not healed. Many if the nenbers shunned her and if i remember correctly she was asked to leave the church. So understandably is kind of a conversation between him and his mother not understanding why she stayed and defended a God and religion that abandoned her when she need them and his anger at the church for allowing that. Also, it's Maynard, so its gonna be complicated and genius
Greetings. Awesome reaction! There's already plenty of explanation as to the history regarding this song, so I won't reiterate. I will expand, however. There are a few songs by Maynard which refer to his mother. Jimmy (Tool, Ænima album) and the 2 part song Wings for Marie & 10,000 Days (Tool, 10,000 Days album) in many ways complete the story of Maynard's emotions about the situation. One specific part of your reaction today compels me to strongly suggest The Grudge by Tool. This is one of the hardest, heaviest APC songs. For a much softer side, Orestes, 3 Libras, and the acoustic version of The Hollow are amazing. The original version of The Hollow is pretty hard as is The Outsider and both are great as well. This is another band you can't really go wrong with. Ty for sharing!
The biblical allusions adds depth to the song. When you reference/question something that people have been discussing for a couple thousand years it has a weight to it. That unholy like choir at the end is epic.
I'm a life long Christian, and this song has always caused such mixed emotions in me. The lyrics always make me recoil a bit, but the energy and passion and pain in the performance, especially that last refrain consistently brings tears to my eyes. I've heard this song probably hundreds of times in my life. I love tool and APC, and it never ceases to get a massive emotional response from me.
I’d like to point out that Maynard (and his first successful band Tool) really started his/their career before the category and term “new metal” was even a thing. In fact, if memory serves, I think Tool may have been one of the first bands to be labeled “New Metal”. I saw Tool for the first time in a small club in Dallas in 1992 or 1993, before they were getting shows at much bigger venues. I’ll never forget he came out on stage in like a full on gimp outfit…lol. Back then, he made a pretty significant effort at concealing his identity, which I thought was super cool - to me, it sent the message that they wanted it to be more about the music, not their image. ‘ 9:42 Musically speaking, to this day probably the best show and most fun I’ve had at a rock and roll show (or whatever category you want to label them…lol).
Looking at the comments, it's nice to know I wasn't alone in having the Paz hair tie moment forever burned into my mind lol. >_< I distinctly remember when this album came out...I was a freshman in college, living on my own for the first time, already a huge Tool fan. And tbh, I was iffy on the idea of a non-Tool Maynard project. But from the first few seconds of The Hollow, I was sold entirely. That first album is a dark gothic heavy beautiful collection of music. I wore that CD _out._
"Geez, that was a long note." MJK has a reputation for being able to hold extended screams and belted notes. Several Tool songs feature them. The Grudge has one thats 20+ seconds long. He would sometimes hold them almost as long when performing live. But I know that he had COVID a couple times during the pandemic. I've watched several videos of post-pandemic Tool shows, and it seems like he doesn't attempt them live anymore. I don't remember any on the Fear Inoculum album, but I'd have to listen through again to be sure. But the man's pushing 60. So it might just be a consequence of aging. He's still damned impressive.
Fun fact: on the album version (almost) all the vocals are Maynard, including most of the backup work. Billy does a lot of vocals when they are live, as does Paz. Great live performances.
To clarify, the secondary lines in the verses are Maynard in the studio but live Billy does those lines. I'm guessing they recorded it this way to make it seem more live, probably Fincher's idea. Btw if you didn't know David Fincher (director of Fight Club and Se7en) directed this video
Weak and powerless is another great one you should check out. Also the hollow is great and shows Maynards vocals off, along with breña that's a really good song in general. Alot of their music is just great vocally and musically imo.
Billy Howerdel (guitar/ vocals) of A Perfect Circle did an album where he sang lead and played all the instruments, called Ashes Divide... titled "Keep telling myself it's alright" in 2008... and a solo Billy Howerdel album in 2022, titled 'What normal was'... This first A Perfect Circle album ('Mer de noms') was released in 2000, so it was released at the height of 'nu metal'... but it was a more ambient project... Billy Howerdel played most of the instruments, Maynard the lyrics and most of the vocals and Josh Freese (drums) most of the beats... The live band was added later and did some overdubs and backing vocals - Paz Lenchantin (bass/ violin) and Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar) ... It was a hit, selling platinum and had other singles - '3 Libras'... 'The Hollow' 🤘🔥 When they did a 2nd album 'Thirteenth Step' in 2003, Paz Lenchantin had left (She briefly joined Billy Corgan and his post-Smashing Pumpkins band Zwan) and Geordie White (aka Twiggy Ramirez of Marilyn Manson's band) joined for the album and tour.
If you wanna see more Billy vocals, check out his side project Ashes Divide, he only had 1 album i believe, but it was very good and very similar to APC, and he's the lead singer in it. His 2 songs, "the sword" and "the stone" on that album are classics
"I guess the gentleman with only the microphone is Maynard." Yes. Billy Howerdel is the bald one. Maynard is typically bald, and typically performs bald with Tool. But he wears long-haired wigs when he performs eith APC. I've seen him in a few different styles of wig when performing with Puscifer: blonde, mohawk, curly, etc. Considerably shorter than his APC wigs, though. I read in an interview that he uses the wigs as different personas, to help him maintain a distinct mental space and approach to vocals and lyrics with each band.
Billy had his own band for a little while. Ashes Divide. Try these 2 songs, The Stone and Sword. Fun fact you will hear a chello when the song Sword starts, that is being played by Maynard's son. Sorry if someone told you this already
From 1993 until 2004 nobody touched this man vocally he still sounds great at 60 but in his prime nobody touched this man only artist i have seen live that was even better than on a track
"Rolling" is a perfect way to describe music like this. Personally, I'm a fan. If you want more rolling -type music, check out Local H - "Cynic" off their first album Hamfisted. It's only two guys and the sheer volume they create is genuinely impressive.
Ayyyyyy! I hope it was my recommendation that brough you here! It'll be a long one, but now that you've done Judith, you need to do the 2 followup songs TOGETHER. Wings for Marie Parts 1 and 2.

This is false. On the commentary for the video, he says it’s about people ridiculing her for still remaining in her faith.
I heard the church told her not to get treatment and that her faith in God will work everything out. Maynard didn't like that.
Billy just released a solo album last year so you can listen to that as well. Very Depeche Mode like…
Paz tying her hair still looks bad ass after 24 years.
Damn, it's really been that long ?
fuck yeah
David Fincher directed this perfectly. Paz-her heels and pulling up the hair is a rawk star move.

This era of APC was goated. Billy is a hell of a musician & I really loved Paz Lenchantin's basslines on this stuff
Billy played most of the bass on the album. Paz only played bass on a single track.
James Iha wasn't a part of this album, correct?
@@laurabuer4714 Correct. He toured with them for a while, but didn't record until the 4th record.

"Mer de Noms" ~ Perfect Circle's debut release.....
......go listen to it....
....right now.
🤘😎😈
The face you make at 1:05 when that certain controversial line is sung always cracks me up haha
All recorded vocals are Maynard. That said, Billy does some great backing vocals live. I recommend the Red Rocks concert. So good!
"Geez, that was a long note."
MJK has a reputation for being able to hold extended screams and belted notes.
Also the hair tie up by the bassist during the break, is still so hot. Can't explain why.
Girl, the entire album that song is on Mer de Noms, is a masterpiece!
You can't forget about the Thunder Goddess herself, Paz Lenchantin. The bass on this song is absolutely delicious.
Hell yes she is epic! And of course the iconic hair tie back
Unfortunately Paz did not play bass on most of the record.
Still great a musician though.
This song is awesome, another great ones from mer de noms are '3 Libras' and 'The hollow'
Fun fact: on the album version (almost) all the vocals are Maynard, including most of the backup work. Billy does a lot of vocals when they are live, as does Paz. Great live performances.
If you want more Billy, he has another project where he does all of the vocals called Ashes Divide
To clarify, the secondary lines in the verses are Maynard in the studio but live Billy does those lines. I'm guessing they recorded it this way to make it seem more live, probably Fincher's idea. Btw if you didn't know David Fincher (director of Fight Club and Se7en) directed this video
Ashes Divid is Billy's solo
Esta cancion prueba lo genial de Maynard
al escribir e interpretar musicalmente impecable.Casi mi favorita de APC. Nice reaction. have a nice day.
The video was directed by David Fincher, who directed Se7en, Fight Club, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Alien³, Gone Girl et al.
Thank you for reacting to my recommendation! I loved it, please keep them coming 🖤🤘
Weak and powerless is another great one you should check out. Also the hollow is great and shows Maynards vocals off, along with breña that's a really good song in general. Alot of their music is just great vocally and musically imo.
13th Step and Mer de Noms are both fantastic albums.
Esperé está reacción mucho tiempo....!!!
Saludos desde Chile...
Maynard had Lucian from Underworld vibes in this one😂great song, great guitar work
An epic masterpiece!
'The Hollow' 🤘🔥
When they did a 2nd album 'Thirteenth Step' in 2003, Paz Lenchantin had left (She briefly joined Billy Corgan and his post-Smashing Pumpkins band Zwan) and Geordie White (aka Twiggy Ramirez of Marilyn Manson's band) joined for the album and tour.
If you wanna see more Billy vocals, check out his side project Ashes Divide, he only had 1 album i believe, but it was very good and very similar to APC, and he's the lead singer in it. His 2 songs, "the sword" and "the stone" on that album are classics
Came for the song, stayed for you and Paz. I’ve heard this song a million times but was interested in someone else’s take. 😊
"I guess the gentleman with only the microphone is Maynard."
Yes.
Good one to start with. Orestes live next! And The Outsider!
Billy has his own band, that he sings in, called Ashes Divide.
Most beautiful song you will ever hear is "Disillusioned" from A Perfect Circle....Maynards range out of this world!
You can hear Billy's own stuff!! I would suggest the song "Sword" from his band Ashes Divide... It's a kickass tune and a great Album
THIS IS ROCK!!!
idk how no one can tell that the belts are maynard with billy adding to it
