Mer De Noms, not only my favorite albums of A Perfect Circle, but one of my favorite of my albums. I never tire of listening to it. Every song is excellent. Judith is my favorite song, not only from the album, but just in general. Thank you Beth for sharing your take on it! 😀
What you described as Maynard and APC's process for writing songs is EXACTLY how Maynard writes his parts for TOOL - he waits for them to finish the music completely then he writes his melodies and lyrics - Cant speak to his process for Perfect Circle - But I would assume it is similar if not the same - not uncommon - the only difference being Maynard has commented he used to try to work out his parts with early versions of the songs Within TOOL , only to find they had they had rearranged, or changed parts forcing him to scrap what he had done - So now he waits until the music is DONE DONE - before he writes his parts.

Such a great song. I love the groove. Making it distinctly 3 and not 6 gives it such an insistence that works perfectly with Maynard's voice. I also loved how Paz, the bassist, kind of showed off by putting her hair up in the middle of the song and finishing it just in time to come in on the beat.
@@BuckMcAntlerson It's a bit debatable, given where the snare hits are, but the beat that the kick hits on are is so heavily accented that I've always counted it as the 1.
I saw them at the 9:30 Club in DC right when this album came out. Paz was rocking out on stage and her breast totally popped out of her vest. She gave 0 Fs and put it back at her own leisure. Putting her hair up or her titty away, she's a bad ass on every level.
Love this song! Orestes is another great one that has a completely different sound, but thematically is like a sequel to Judith (it also is the very next song on the album). Orestes hits me in the feels every time I hear it. The line "and from pulling you down with me here, I can almost hear you scream 'Give me one more medicated, peaceful moment'" absolutely wrecks me. Maynard's passion, pain and emotion pours through in that moment.
I’ve heard this song for the 20 years of my life. The first time you hear so amazing x brings me joy to see someone else to enjoy it for the first time. Nothing like hearing a song for the first time or even ten!
This is an incredible song, on a terrific album, by an outstanding band. Good choice! Maynard has such an incredible voice. Might I suggest you listen to "The Humbling River" by Puscifer, another of his musical groups. It's a mellow, beautiful dirge. I am new to this channel, and I absolutely love it ❤❤❤
Mer De Noms is still one of my favourite albums 23 years later, not a bad track on it. This song is about his mother being in a car crash that left her disabled but not giving up on her faith, hence all the angst. It's kinda a prequal to Tool's Wings For Marie and 10,000 days, which are about her passing and how he understands her faith better now.
Don't forget Jimmy, in the timeline before Judith and Wings for Marie. Very important track on Maynards journey, realizing, that he has to face his own anger (which he did in Judith) to make his peace with the situation.
SUGGESTION: The Sugarcubes - Birthday. This late '80s post-punk band was obscure even when they were active, but the singer is most definitely not. Yes, that's Bjork shouting, growling, and yodeling through the band's signature song. Give a listen, I promise you won't be disappointed.
3 libras from this album gets me every time. So much subtlety and dynamics with so much feeling. Really one of those songs that gives me chills every time. Please Beth, give it a listen!
I like this band. They have a spiritual sound. Very brave intention and very urgent message for Christians. Combing atmospheric rock with a moral tone satisfying experience. Thank-you Beth.
Excellent live show, only seen these guys twice but really fantastic. One tour Maynard was sporting the long black hair and performing from under the drum set in some sort of cage so pretty much obscured from view, but it was an outside venue and started raining like mad, like torrential, and he came out from the cage and stood at the edge of the stage all out there for everyone to see and asked, 'would you like us to stop playing" or some such. Needless to say the audience went nuts, fun little concert moment burned into the brain. They kept playing.
May I recommend reacting to Puscifer’s song The Humbling River? It’s Maynard’s third project, and the vocals in it are very good. Carina Round, as well as Maynard’s son provide background vocals in the song.

As I under stand it this song is about Maynards Mother. About how her church turned against her yet she maintained her faith in that very church. She sounds like a good woman and Maynard sounds like a good son who loves his mother.

The opening song to this album is The Hollow, and omg, it's such a sexual song. It's all about the libido, but you'd never know it just by hearing it without hearing the lyrics. Best song on the a whole album. I recommend watching The Hollow live at Red Rocks. Amazing, beautiful song
Would recommend Maynard's other band Puscifer and their song "Remedy". Will give you a really good chance to hear both Maynard and Carina do some lovely things vocally.
Maynard is dressed like a dark Jesus. The hair, clothes, and the fact he's wearing sandals (I think) the backup singers making the "He did it all for you"s sound like a choir somewhat. Theres so much to this

I remember seeing a right-wing pastor on YT review this song at one point (watched it out of curiosity). What was interesting to me was that while he took issue with the *message* of the song and Maynard basically calling out his mother for believing in a god that made her to suffer throughout her life, the pastor couldn't deny the overwhleming talent that went into making it and how good the song is. And that to me was a sign of just how talented Maynard and his bandmates (across all 3 of his bands) are. On a related note, if you haven't listened to them yet, I definitely recommend Tool's songs "Wings for Marie (Pt 1)", "10,000 Days (Wings for Marie Pt 2), and Puscifer's song "Horizons". All 3 of those were songs written by Maynard while he was still processing his grief from the death of his mother.

One other interesting thing and anyone else please correct me if I'm wrong. I don't know anything about Puscifer live but everytime he played with Tool live he was always in the background never really being the "frontman" more of a shadow because he wanted the music to speak for itself or something to that affect and for APC he would do the normal and be the "frontman" for those shows. At least every time I saw both those two bands live, those were my experiences. Great review though as usual.
