@@deusexrockina I would love for her to react to one of their more recent songs that highlights their evolution into a very uplifting and optimistic style. 'Reflection' is probably the best example. I would love to see her reflect on 'reflection'. ;)
Rock has become so underappreciated in these newer generations. But when they hear it like she is, hopefully they can appreciate its former popularity for more than just its ostensible, superficial appeal.
I feel way too happy when this happens. I was in High School and an aquaintence was practically preaching them as awesome as he lent me CDs. And.. he was 1000% right.

@@KazzArie you obviously haven't tried very hard to find any of the plethora of amazing "rock" bands putting out great music today. I get that Tool is awesome af and you're nostalgic or whatever, but there are millions of artists out there doing their thing and creating their art right now and they don't deserve to be dismissed so callously.
Austin Parker aware me broo. I’ve been out of the loop for a while. Early 2000s most music was less than stellar. Got on an edm kick and that’s about it. Now I find myself listening to 80s-90s stuff from when I was growin up.
KazzArie - you have a point about Green Day, but what does hip hop have to do with this? It’s a different genre entirely, with zillions of different styles, some of them good, some are not so good. I guess you can say....music is subjective and can be good OR bad depending on your personal opinion
Eric E. E. You’re right about that n it seems the older we get all the current music sucks. I’m proving my own point kek ...I’m getting older and think all the new music sucks. What do your parents think of music today vs 20-30 years ago?
Tool are one of the greatest bands ever. musicianship that's off the scale and Maynard's vocals never fail to astonish. I'd recommend Wings for Marie parts 1 & 2 to experience the power and quality of his voice.
Winds Of Marie are amazing also cause they have a guest appearance by Lustmord doing the storm sound effects :D Very different artist from a very different (dark ambient) kind of music, but also legendary among the fans of the genre.
Yes but she needs to know the story to fully appreciate it i think. I remember myself listening to it without paying attention too much and thinking its a good song but when i first found out about his mum and all her years of being paralyzed but holding faith before she then passed away after around 10.000days and i listened to it again i fucking cried like a baby :(
Yeah, I really hope you read this.... but.... Maynard is amazing, his dynamics are epic. You must review A Perfect Circles “Judith” followed by “10,000 Days” and “Wings For Marie” by Tool. In that order. You want powerful? How about the process of coping with losing your mother both to a stroke and to religion.... mind blowing and heart wrenching.
Stick in there. I have severe depression and high anxiety. I’ve been listening to Tool a lot and it’s helping. Reach out to people. Stay focused and you can get through it.
I liked Muse up until their last couple albums. Getting too poppy for my tastes, but they're absolutely amazing musicians with tons of talent. Saw them a few years back and was disappointed he didn't go nuts on the guitar. Standard setlist. Nothing fancy. I know he can shred, so I was looking forward to it. Still a good show, but was hoping for more.

@@seelenwinter6662 I lived in Whistler for many years now and when I found out Tool was playing in Vancouver, I asked a bunch of friends if anyone wanted to go. Almost none of my friends from UK, Ireland, Scotland area knew who they were. A few that had lived in Canada a long time did, but most didn't. Check the album chart positions. Until 10 000 days, Only USA, Canada and Australia really knew them. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tool_discography
@@seelenwinter6662 " the most important and influence band the last 20-25 years" - lol no...great band (I've been a fan since 93...seen them twice) but not really all that influential (which newer well known bands did they influence?..i can't think of one...maybe Muse, like she said lol). Their contemporaries like Nirvana and Pearl Jam were MUCH more influential. Still, awesome band.
@@RP_Williams The influence is certainly not as notable as the two bands' you've listed and is more subtle, but it's there. Tool's early works had a notable influence over a number of alternative metal bands in the mid-90s (I mean you can clearly see it in e.g. Jonathan Davis of Korn, as well as a number of other acts of the time), and their musical origins and sensibilities helped shape the genre known as post-metal (although Melvins were arguably more influential in this regard, seeing as they were an oft-cited influence on Tool themselves) and popularize complex rhythmic structures way before math rock was recognized as its own genre. So, while it's a bit hard to name a band that sounds just like Tool (given Maynard's lyrical and vocal expertise and the rest of the band's musical technique, being similar is not exactly easy to begin with), it's possible to name several genres that enjoyed mainstream popularity and an influx of performers not long after Tool started dabbling in them. This is not unlike the "shadow influence" e.g. Throbbing Gristle and the projects of its founding members (most notably Psychic TV and Coil) exerted over a wide range of genres, with no single band to be named as a direct influence but overall serving as some of the main pioneers of new sound and techniques that would later spread across hundreds and thousands of separate performers.
This is true (and the views on her past videos confirm it) but I hope she sticks to her guns and does what she enjoys and doesn't just chase views (too much at least). If she does I'll watch it though.
@@maluorno I think 10,000 Days (song) might be too long for something like this, and not much different in terms of lyrical style. I think Maynard has changed over the years but overall stays true to the original Tool sound. On 10,000 Days (album) I think the most dynamic we see of him is in The Pot but its still that same soft to hard to smooth style. We shall see if that changes in the new album (if we ever see it) - but I think if she were to do another it would be better for her to do a contrast in style/technique between say a Tool track vs APOC or Puscifer. That's really where he shows different ability and vocal style.

One of the big reasons Tool's sound works for them, is that MJK usually sings in A while the guitars are tuned to D. They interweave through keys perfectly. Oh and obviously, they have the best drummer in the world
Lol, did you happen to mean MIKE Portnoy, of Dream Theater perhaps? Doesn't hold a candle, not even in the same room, as Danny Carey. NOT saying Portnoy is a bad drummer, but to put him in the same league as Carey just isn't correct. There isn't a contest. I am a 51 year old dude. I can tell you, TOOL RULES! Listened to them while I was in the USMC. You simply CANNOT fake their level of realism. They live and feel every goddamn note they play. Amazing.
Look up Brass Against. They did The Pot and Lateralus, both are amazing. Beard Of Harmony did a great acoustic cover or Right In Two that was equally amazing.
Very interesting to see someone oblivious to Tool, coupled with a youthful perspective, provide what I thought was a very professional and accurate analysis.
If you listen to the recorded version of Sober and many of their other songs, you will notice one thing. When the tracks are mixed, his voice is at the same level as the instruments. They are treating his voice as just another instrument.
I love how she realises, self-consciously looks at the camera, tries to stop but her hands come up in a sort of subconscious attempt to get that need to mosh out. Don't resist the mosh!
THIS. You don't just hear and listen, it resonates in your very heart and soul. Especially of you can relate to their music (which is very much a matter of perception and interpretation) based on your individual experiences. That is what makes tool great - they can speak across genres, styles, and cultural boundaries. Even though I hate that their albums typically have a 10(ish year gap), they never disappoint me. That said, I still prefer their older music opposed to the newer stuff, but that does not mean their newer stuff does not speak to me on an emotional or spiritual level

Still rocking out with them to this day!!! My middle son, (28yo now) has caused more than one neighbor to complain about the loud music, after he discovered my music...

I remember when I was 12 back in ‘93 or ‘94. Whenever the video to Sober got a lot of play on Mtv. Even remember when it was on Liquid Lunch and Beavis & Butthead. Could remember sayin’ “who is Tool, what in the world is that clay figure in the video, & why aren’t they in the video?” Was a different approach from those guys about the music they put out. Heard about these guys back in the early 90’s. Couldn’t afford a tape/cd didn’t have no job back then ha ha ha ha.
@@bawdhed7 Same here. I remember the rise to popularity in the 90s but I mostly remember THE VIDEOS. They were on heavy rotation on MTV and as a 10/11yr old they were really intriguing, and creepy in a very well done way. The videos playing with their music weren't scary, they just... got under my skin. Made me uncomfortable and I didn't know why. I didn't know anything about the band. I wasn't a fan. At the time NIN, Smashing, Pumpkins, Jesus and Mary Chain, and Pink Floyd were more my thing at the time... but as I got older (past college) I realized all my friends with musical tastes I liked /shared loved Tool and I always thought "Ugh, why do you all love that yelling, bass heavy shit from the 90's? It wasn't that great..." Finally started listening to them (and their associated groups) again as an adult. Perfection.
I listened to this CD when I was 16 driving alone for the first time in 1994. Still remember thinking I was king of the world. Love this song and the memories it brings back.
Maynard has always suffered from stage fright. He very rarely looks directly over the crowd. Went to my first tool concert in 98’ Had the pleasure of meeting Danny on a few occasions. He’s a friend of a friend. He showed up at her wedding and played drums to a crowd of 100 or so. A memory I will always have
I get a chill every time I hear that high note in Pushit. I would love to see your reaction to The Grudge as well. Maybe one of the best screams in rock music of all time.
7:30 when she bites her lip and kinda almost headbangs. 😍 It looked compulsive, like she couldn't help herself. Just adorable. For real though, if that part of the song doesn't move you in some way, you might be dead.
'They've been releasing albums up til now'. Ah, yeah, only been waiting 12 years for the 5th one :P Love Tool though, and I'd rather wait than have something that didn't have the soul their music usually does. E: wrote that before watching the rest. This is a really good interpretation of the band. While individually they are all fantastic musicians, together they understand exactly how to deliver something much greater. Maynard has an incredible voice which appears to come so easily, but more than that is the passion and emotion that you feel coming from them all. Glad you enjoyed it, they are definitely worth checking out if you feel like hearing more.
A big part of Why Tool was absent so long is cause Maynard formed A Perfect Circle and worked on that for years. It's a more Christian Rock sound but Maynard still brings the emotional intensity. It was how he was dealing with the loss of his mother and brother.
There hasn't been tool stuff for ages because of contract issues with the record label. Maynard formed Puscifer as a solo project and has toured that (also amazing, check out the conditions of my parole album especially), APC had as big of a hiatus as tool, not releasing anything between emotive and the latest album. I can't remember when emotive was released, I think it was 2005 (before 10000 days by tool), and the new album came out last year.
Your look towards music is so sharp and carefull that you actually get to the essence of the song on a first hear. That for me is impressive. On the end you said "it really felt like the bottom of a human soul"; but to actually feel that you need to open up and let the song get into your soul. It means you have done it, and watching it happen to someone is beautiful.
You should definitely consider reacting to more rock/metal songs. RUclips has a big scene for that people reacting to metal, and you know what you are talking about, so far i enjoyed your two reactions (Tool and Jinjer). very informative as well. Maybe try to react to "King Diamond - Abigail". The guy has one of the most distinguished voices in metal.
I came in here thinking this chick is going to try and RIP down the band that basically defined my teenage and early 20s. Love Maynard his voice is so insanely powerful. He builds the story not only with words but his emotion and his stage presence. Definitely look at the music video. Thank you for proving me wrong you analyzed Maynard well. This song four me was dealing with depression every day it would allow you to feel good about yourself some times your happy and every thing seems well for it of nowhere it would crush and devastate you. Some coined the song with drug addiction ADHD I see that. But for me it was the black dog. Still puts tears in my eyes not of pain not of sadness but just emotion. This man should be listened to by all.
When you watch somebody have the exact same emotions as you did 25 years ago. Imagine discovering Tool in 2019 and realizing there's all that back catalog!
How about the truth: They're both good, but not similar sounds in any way really... For the life of me I don't understand why people are comparing them. Only similarity is each singers' (Maynard and Matthew) range on the high end. I'd hazard a guess it was the high notes which made Muse be the first thing to come to Beth's mind.

@@82pythons85 you can absolutely use the word genius to describe tool's songwriting. Watch a breakdown of any of their songs, especially one like lateralus.
82 Pythons i don’t misuse the word “genius.” Maynard James Keenan is beyond anyone or anything in the creative world. I think you’re just either jealous of his (yes, obvious) talents or you have no idea who MJK is.
I had the privilege of having his father as my science teacher in H.S. I dont know Maynard well. But have had the opportunity to talk with him on a couple of occasion growing up. A talented vocalist. Even cooler person. Very down to earth. Thank you for sharing

I saw them live in DC at what was usually a Rave club. The entire band was painted half black and half white the entire show. Under the lights you could only see half a human it was crazy. I have backstage and after show passes from Ghost Productions. MJK is so cerebral and the best live show I’ve ever seen and meeting them was nuts. “97” I think
Yeah, every time I've seen Tool, Maynard has been in the dark behind or to the side of the drums. During all the APC shows I've seen he was in the front directly under the lights. Truthfully, I don't know the reasoning why he now stays in the dark with Tool and under the lights with APC and Puscifer. This is only about 10 shows over the last 10 years so IDK what he did before this.
Maynard is singing and performing in his natural vocal range very well. Which is tenor. Amazing performance up front by him despite his preference to perform in the back.

Always admired how he could scream at the top of his lungs and sound so comfortable. Like his voice should be breaking or he should be struggling to maintain but he always made it sound like he was folding laundry while doing that.
Yes very talented. But what he is doing is adding a slight growl a normal singing pitch. It allows you to get the stream without destroying your voice. He has mastered this

Picking up on Muse was astute, in my opinion. Muse has a cinematic style (Stockholm Syndrome immediately comes to mind), and Tool has this same characteristic in some of their work. I have listened to Tool for many years, and it's great to see a new generation appreciating the standout bands that originally formed decades ago. I truly believe that's why today's sound hasn't changed much because we've already reached the pinnacle of this genre because of and thanks to bands like Tool.
Congrats on your discovery of TOOL. They are legends and Maynard is truly a lyrical genius. They have not had an album out since 2006, but they are just about to finally drop their first album since then (allegedly coming out this April - provided it's not an April Fool's joke, but they are mixing the music in the studio now, so it seems legit this time - us fans have been waiting forever). In the meantime - you really should check out the song Lateralus, and also Parabol/Parabola (frankly - the whole Lateralus album is amazing, but those 2 songs in particular are something to marvel at both musically and lyrically). This hits in 4 separate parts for me. The first chorus is plaintive, almost begging. The second is angry, lashing out at the addiction. Then you have the softer interlude...reaching desperation before exploding with anger again. Then the end of the song feels like accepting what is...and that it's your own fault.

I agree wholeheartedly. Such a great thing to bear witness to!
Proud? Do you always take pride in things you had nothing to do with?

I really hate it when people compare Maynard James Keenan to God. I mean he's alright and all, but he's no Maynard James Keenan.

I’m proving my own point kek

Your not kidding my friend Tool is the greatest band ever in my book.

'They've been releasing albums up til now'. Ah, yeah, only been waiting 12 years for the 5th one :P
Love Tool though, and I'd rather wait than have something that didn't have the soul their music usually does.
Chris Bennett APC is definitely not Christian rock. Even the sound is not similar.
@diabolic I didn't say it was I said it sounded more like Christian Rock. Learn to read tool.
Plus that accent😀
he doesn't write the lyrics until the the music is a finished product. he said you cant force lyrics on a song. it just doesn't come out the same way.
It's like he's not singing the song but it's being channeled through him.
Extremely accurate
Your look towards music is so sharp and carefull that you actually get to the essence of the song on a first hear. That for me is impressive. On the end you said "it really felt like the bottom of a human soul"; but to actually feel that you need to open up and let the song get into your soul. It means you have done it, and watching it happen to someone is beautiful.

@@cbauersc there's a certain mood too. But they do execute it quite differently
Will Greer no, Muse isn’t anything like them in any conceivable way
I love Muse!!!
Tool-Pushit live from the Salival
this x1000. specifically the live video of the maine 7-8-1998 performance.
+John McNamara agreed, Lewiston was very lucky to witness that version of pushit. when the lads & I get together for a tool party.. that 1 & the "I'm going to flip then sit on you for 5min without missing a beat", 1 are always played on the projector. tool since 91'
Needs to happen
Yes!!!!!!!
I feel you should look at mike patton from faith no more/mr bungle his vocal range is fantastic
Absolutely, also the way he inverts the emotion vs the lyric content.. or how he warps and restructures words to make them sound completely different. "Its not funny my ass is on fire.. par-a-pa-legic inhuman liar"
Squeeze me macaroni, slap your face with my bologna. Dickadicka-doo, dickdick-adoo, dickadicka-doo, dicka-hoo-hoo-hoo. ruclips.net/video/2s7X5-Drctk/видео.html
His vocal range is actually rated as the best ever in artists today. Approaching 7 octaves...that's insane.
@@kellyennis5045 the man of a thousand voices.. with projects ranging from experimental noise to 50's Italian pop opera.. with enough clout to form a superband of every genre.. sorry where was I.. I was man-crushing
The both are vocal God's
“Harrowing” is a perfect word to describe Tool.
Wawwwwww...... so refreshing watching a vocalist enjoying this.... goosebumps.
Yes! This exactly! It was almost like experiencing tool for the first time all over again! Especially since Sober was the first song I ever heard from them
It's so exciting to see his face. If you've ever seen TOOL... you know that it's a rarity to actually lay eyes on Maynard. He usually sings behind a screened wall, paints himself black or blue, or you just do not see him...at all. The whole hunchback thing is part of his stage presence. They're badass.... plain and simple
Lol yeah, I saw them at rock on the range last year and i just saw a outline of his body in the back.
I saw TOOL at Lallapalooza in 97 and he was basically naked, riding on the shoulders of a giant dude that was wearing a bondage outfit.
@@acw2582 i saw TOOL at lollapalooza 97 also, he came out in a bustier...once upon a time he was a helluva showman! Still is with Puscifer!!!
Even in hiding, TOOL is still one of THE best live shows you'll ever see!
When I saw them all i saw was his back. He faced the drummer the entire concert lol
@@acw2582 yeah I remember going to I think it was the first Lollapalooza and they were playing the side stage so many people left mainstage to go see them
I can't believe it's 2019 and I"m watching someone experience Tool for the first time.
It was 2014, in a uni dorm in India, couple of boys smokin some pot, one of them puts on 'right in two'.
My life hasnt been the same ever since. :)
"People are gonna hate I said that" LOL!
Undertow has really good stuff, but they really come into their own on Aenima, then Lateralus, and 10,000 days each challenged my definition of genius. I'd love to see someone with your education delve into Tool for the first time. I subscribed in that hope. Just, go in order track by track starting with No. 1 on Aenima and I will be a fan of yours always!
I love watching her mind being blown by the fkn GENIUS that is Maynard James Keenan. He is my everything🖤
Couldn't agree more, ya could see the meaning of the words challenging her mind to make since of the emotion and harmony of one of Tools songs. Would love to see how she reacts to a whole album.
@Steven Bee Why aren't you?
Kitty Meow lol 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Always a great experience when a connaisseur listens Tool for the first time. Great job!
I had the privilege of having his father as my science teacher in H.S.
I dont know Maynard well. But have had the opportunity to talk with him on a couple of occasion growing up.
A talented vocalist. Even cooler person.
Very down to earth.
Thank you for sharing
you lucky duck
Hi,
Does that mean that you are a western Michigander?
I have heard Maynard grew up here but I never confirmed it
Hi Yea he's lived in Grand Rapids in his teens late 20 s. First band CAD.
@@Bsliggs yes he spent high school and college years in Michigan. He was born in Ravenna though. Thanks to Ohio for breeding someone so great.
Came across this and now off to listen to all my favorite tool songs, see you in a few days...
Same
Ten thousand?
92 I think. 46 x 2.
I typically hate reaction videos because the majority have nothing to add but their face. you, however do a very good job of stopping the video to add in your own expertise on how the vocalist is doing. very good job. I wonder what other gems you might've missed out on in terms of artists
i once saw a tool concert, during which the singer stayed behind a screen and you could only see his outline/shadow. he's special , shall we say... 😉
He did that with APC mid 2000s
that was a perfect circle like around 2003 or 2004
I saw them live in DC at what was usually a Rave club.
When I saw tool, Maynard came out dressed in black from head to toe. By the middle of the first song, he was in a black speedo and nothing else.
Maynard is singing and performing in his natural vocal range very well. Which is tenor. Amazing performance up front by him despite his preference to perform in the back.
One of the best reaction I have seen to this song. Trying to critique and feel at the same time seems to leave for a loss of words and it makes this reaction feel genuine. Thank you.
"It felt like the bottom of a human soul." Lmao, that's an awesome description.
shit adds up at the bottom, eh?
Bottom, another tool song.
First time watching. You nailed it. Please do more Tool. 'Right in Two' is phenomenal.
She nailed it, yes, but Right In Two is not the best representation of Tool's classic work. The Grudge or Parabol/Parabola would be wiser.
I've been listening to Tool since my adolescence, they're my favourite band by far and a huge part of my life. Watching you listen to this for the first time gave me a chance to listen to it with new ears again. Thank you!
This randomly popped up in suggestions. You got a sub lady
So glad you enjoyed!
Ditto m8
I've never had the pleasure of watching someone become a Tool fan. Very cool.
Have you ever done any reacts to Soundgarden/Audioslave/Chris Cornell works? That man had a beautiful voice. RIP Chris.
Absolutely. And not to mention unique. Chris had such a distinct voice, one of a kind.
beyond the wheel. she should totally do that.
If she's doing Soundgarden, "Jesus Christ Pose", or, my favorite from Badmotorfinger, "Slaves and Bulldozers" would be at the top of my list...
"Outshined" would get my vote.
His range was insane. Definitely a great. And Layne Staley would be right beside him for a perfect follow up too in my book.

Speaking of singing with bad posture, watch what Maynard does when a fan gets up on stage for a hug.

Yep
I love you
It's bizarre the way they try to compartmentalize the emotions of this song. It's not a joke. It is suffering realized. Stop trying to define it so thoroughly. When you grow up In privileged circumstances we don't want to hear your fucking opinion. Fuck you! Don't you think you have put us through enough.
He has mastered this
Pro tip: review Tool and you will get views.
And we'll gladly watch it too!
This is 100% true... you can review APC and Puscifer as well...
Yea I'm not even subbed but this was recommended because I always listen to Tool
I'm a simple man...
Also reviewing tool while showing more cleavage. Although I do like the space crew neck just as much as bewbs.
I hereby declare that I and all under my influence will boycott any product whose advert interrupts Tool
YES. I SECOND THAT
Specially this particular one.. Interrupting Maynard..for that??.. You fckng kidding me?
HEAR HEAR
Interrupt Tool, Yeah how dare someone interrupt a 13 year break between releases?
Also just realised that the video is basically someone interrupting tool 🤣
My preferred hemorrhoid cream supplier dont critique Tool though so my point stands
His posture is Muse derivative.
Best to you and thanks for reacting to TOOL.
If you've never heard Tool and this is you're intro to them...Keep digging, because you are in for a treat. Possibly a life-altering treat. You have a musical education, which is a great advantage to hearing their true genius
I love that your analysis focuses on both the singing and the band as a whole. You nailed all the things that make Tool so great for me and so many others.
It'd be pretty awesome if you could react to Maynard's other band A Perfect Circle. Live versions of "The Outsider" and "3 Libras" are amazing.
Beth, I loved your analysis of this song and of Maynard as a vocalist. Tool really is such a dynamic band that are talented on so many levels. It’s great to see the honest reaction of somebody not familiar with their music, so perfectly connect to the song and understand what Tool as a band is all about. Thank you!
"He is walking with the band" I am glad you mention it. Vocals on Tool is just another instrument not separated from the band
So much this
Lol... you give way too much credit
@@timmybobby4052 too much credit? Not at all, Maynard designed the lyrics/melody/pitch to go WITH the instrumentals, he's a wonderful musician and knew how to work with the band. His vocals were just another instument, or Tool, in the band's sound.
@@jonparker8795 yeah exactly... tooooo much credit.
Not sure why this popped up on my recommended but watched it and was impressed by what you’ve had to say. I’ve now been binge watching your videos for the last couple of hours.

I’ve worked out why I like it so much. It’s your passion. I don’t know enough (or anything) about singing to know if what you say are a accurate. It likely is but I don’t know.

This hits in 4 separate parts for me. The first chorus is plaintive, almost begging. The second is angry, lashing out at the addiction. Then you have the softer interlude...reaching desperation before exploding with anger again. Then the end of the song feels like accepting what is...and that it's your own fault.
Very well said.
