"The Noose" and "Weak and Powerless" on the same album might be my favorite tracks from that record. And this album is probably my favorite from APC. So good.
I’ve always wondered how hard it was for Billy Howerdel to not sound like Tool since he used to be Adams guitar tech up until their first show on the Ænima tour. I’d say he’s done a pretty good job.
Billy was also a stage/guitar tech for a bunch of other bands too (including Guns and Roses if I recall) but yeah his guitar style and sound is his own for sure. Mer de Noms was basically only written by Billy (unlike the other APC albums) - and his "influences" for that album are mostly New Wave bands as odd as that may seem at first...
I guess you could say it’s one of my favorites because I do absolutely love it as I just pretty much love all their songs but it’s not in my top ten favorite APC songs..
"Blue" never gets the credit it deserves. Thats track is simply mesmeric. Harmonies and bass in it are otherworldly. Sleeping beauty is proper unerrated too. Beautiful track.
I've had so many friends with so much potential that just couldn't get out of their own way... this whole album is about addiction. Every track. Such a well crafted album which is becoming a lost art. Great choice.
It's about recovery from addiction and the 12 steps too. Name is right in the title. The 13th Step is usually known as the act of someone who had been clean longer, persuading and becoming physical with a newcomer, with negative motives.
"The Package" lyrics are straight up about my last comment. They're written from the perspective of someone with clean time going to a meeting etc. and using cliches to pull a newcomer in until they're done with that person. Great song.
I'm still here!! To be honest, APC is a truly wonderful band that finds a way to wring out emotion from every song. You really can't go wrong with any track from Mer De Noms or Thirteenth Step.
@@timyo6288 If song length determines how good a band is (of course it doesn't), I could name plenty that write songs just as long and much better than Tool (BTBAM, Periphery, etc.). Also, waiting 13 years for a new album that ends up sounding exactly the same as the previous album is pretty disappointing.

I remember buying this album in a school trip to Cape Cod. Went to sleep with the CD on my headphones, fell asleep and woke up to the sound of The Nurse Who Loved Me. I was a 17 year old Spaniard exchange student and everything felt friggin' surreal. It's been 18 years already, I won't ever forget that first listen to that album.
I once fell asleep listening to Roger Waters - Amused to Death blasting on the stereo really load. I woke up during the choir, chanting and drums at the end of "the Miracle". Even though it's probably 20 years ago I remember it vividly.
Still here mate. Weak & Powerless, The noose & Gravity are probably my favourites off this album. Depending on what lever im using the music for. Gym, work, play, sleep etc. Great reaction as always. Looking forward to hearing you do Flood by Tool some day.
One of my favourite songs of all time off one of my favourite albums of all time. Josh Freese's playing on this record was instrumental in me becoming a drummer myself and he also played a big part in me playing Paiste cymbals. Everything here just sounds absolutely phenomenal and it's got just the right amount of compression to make it sound fat and punchy without completely squashing the dynamics.
I was on a random nostalgic binge of A Perfect Circle then saw you uploaded this vid 50 minutes ago, what are the chances! I fell in love with the Album Thirteenth Step back in 2006, 15 years later and it still holds up well
You need to see the live version of this song performed at the Red Rocks Amphitheater. It's the absolute best, it's impossible not to get wrapped into the energy of that performance. It's easy to find, check it out!
YES!!!!! Oh man, you made my day! It’s like looking in the mirror while I’m watching your physical reactions: the smile, the wow- moment, the goosebumps and so on. Thank you thank you…I’m so happy I found your channel from the day you started.
I get so much joy out of watching him truly enjoy a song. He's a spazz in the best possible way. It reminds me of my son, when he was little, trying to contain his excitement. Good times.
Maynard's ability to deliver emotion with his lyrics to also add to the melodic sense of the music as a whole is his skill. With all the bands he rends his skills to this is one of those where he can't step out of the shadow as is forefront in his unique ability.
love this track. APC is great when they're broody, but it's also excellent when they just let one rip. Josh Freese is just a beast drumming here. the more i listen to them, the more i end up focusing on his drum parts.
This is a great one! Thanks Geebz! The song “Vanishing” off this same album is a really moving musically as well. A bit different but very well put together and I never change it when it comes on.
This is one of the best produced albums I've ever heard. Impeccable. Everything is so clear and crisp and not a hint of compression or clipping. So dynamic sounding. And of course this song is simply outstanding.
Love your reaction at 8:27. That part really hit me out of the blue as well! Sounds awesome. I'd recommend you check out 'Disillusioned' by A Perfect Circle. It's got some really interesting production techniques in it.
First concert I ever went to was APC in Orlando when they were touring this album. Blew my mind and still think about it almost 18 years later. Crazy to think it was that long ago.
Went and saw this albums tour when they launched it. To this day I'd say that was the best concert experience I've been to. I've seen tool 7 times live and it's great but there was something very special about that tour
This was my favorite album as a young kid, but I stopped listening to it as much as I got older while still appreciating it as a well-written piece of work. A few months ago, I was struggling with an addiction I held for years and decided to revisit the album as an adult. From then, the love I already had deepened so much, not only because of the lyrical content but because of the atmosphere and nuanced songwriting. One of the best rock albums of the 2000s in my eyes.
I love this song to my core. I get chills through it then by the end I feel my eyes starting to water up. "If you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere Do it somewhere far away from here" Gets me every time. Love the reaction and watching you vibe and be surprised. Got to experience it along with you and I appreciate that.
I’m suddenly very excited about hearing you react to more Perfect Circle stuff. It just seems the perfect fit of impact, technique and emotion that you’ll love.
GEEBZ! How the heck does this keep happening with me! I literally just picked up The Thirteenth Step for my collection YESTERDAY! Like, man, you are killing it with these vid's lately! A Perfect Circle is fantastic, and I got a few albums from Puscifer to get acquainted to their whole catalog as well. Love the vid, man! Keep rockin', awwwright! P.S. - Just ran through Alter Bridge again today, maybe time for some _Blackbird?_ I assume you have heard it as you are a big fan of Myles Kennedy. I remember coming across a nice live version on RUclips that has ALLL the nuances in his voice, especially in the breakdown with the long notes before the outro riff. Fantastic work!
Absolutely love A Perfect Circle! I’ve been a disabled drummer for 35 years and they were the first band that really got me into music! I’m so glad you’ve finally found them, dude! I believe the first song of theirs I heard was The Noose, from the same album, Thirteenth Step. If you could do a reaction to that song, man, that’d be awesome! Take care👍🏽
This album is wild and I love every bit of it. I saw them on the first tour for the album and i was 10 feet from the stage, my ears rang gloriously and it was amazing seeing them perform together. the melodic love they give gets me every time.
An absolute belter of a track, a good listen also is the Apocalypse remix of this song featured on their aMOTION album. Always found that that version of the track was the definitive one.
MORE PERFECT CIRCLE, YEEEEESSSS I would love to see you do Disillusioned. Everyone keeps suggesting things from their old albums, but you haven't heard anything from their newest record yet, and Disillusioned is just fucking incredible.
Hard to believe it's already been nearly a year! I'm glad you mentioned it - I can remember relaxing as we settled into the Thanksgiving holiday and coming across your channel. It was a nice way to cozy into the season. Best to you and yours!
I couldnt agree more about the drum EQ being eargasmic. They sound so Clean, yet _fat_ and alive, the sound intoxicates to want more and more. This song comes from a great album, and one other quite beautiful song worth checking out from that record is "The Noose". A wonderful reaction, as usual! Some of your insights have really stuck with me ever since I started watching your videos at the beginning of this year, so I hope I can return the favor at some point.
I’m still here :) The first time I listened to this album I was 18 years old. I set up 4 speakers under my bed and would just listen from start to finish. This is a great opening track and sets a good mood for the rest. Love getting lost in these tracks
This is my 2nd favorite APC track, and is my favorite album. My absolute favorite track is "Pet". I must admit to being heavily influenced by the guitar lick that starts at about 3:45 that just goes and hits every box of what I love in guitar solos.
Saw this tour live. Menard wore a Santa outfit in the middle of July, lol, and after this song was over, he said "You guys were moshing!? This is a perfect circle...find another dance to do."
I love how you got excited when they played the harmonic during the bridge part. That is part of why I watch you. Your insight and opinions are great, but I like to see your reactions. You are very much appreciated good sir!
Magdalena is another APC song that just goes "rock" in a similar kind of way. It's got solos and everything. There are really good live performances of this song too. That would be fun for the patreon.
Hey Geebz! Love LOVE your breakdowns. Best out there. After all these breakdowns, I’d love to see a video of you talking about which bands you’d love to work with on their next album and how you would compose and work with said band(s). Fav vocalist to work with etc. Coffee coming right up!

I'm the same way as I love picking apart individual aspects of a piece, but still feel very moved by the work as a whole. A couple more APC songs Id love to see you review which are not as well known but have a weird/complex/cool sound to them and are my personal favorites....."Brena" awesome drum work, brief but lovely guitar. "Vanishing" nearly instrumental, vinyl scratches, cool rhythm and mellow feel. "Hourglass" cool effects, lots of changes, very different feel for APC
"The Noose" and "Weak and Powerless" on the same album might be my favorite tracks from that record. And this album is probably my favorite from APC. So good.
I’d go:
1. Weak and Powerless
2. Pet
3. Blue
4. The Outsider
5. Gravity
Definitely, and my third choice after those two would be 3 libras
Yea Blue, weak and powerless, and the noose. All are up there. But this song has always been my favorite APC track.
1. The Noose
2. The Package
3. Gravity
4. Blue
5. Vanishing

"Vanishing" nearly instrumental, vinyl scratches, cool rhythm and mellow feel. "Hourglass" cool effects, lots of changes, very different feel for APC
I bought you a cup of Coffee, because I've gotten many of hours of entertainment over the past year enjoying watching you! Aloha!
