I think it's 4/4 but there's a weird 7/8 measure when he says "picture perfect numb belligerence"...and then when that section repeats before the change I believe it's back to 4. the fuckin lyrics from this dude. holy shit
I always base counting on 3s and 2s in my head. 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 2 (three times) 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 Time sig I would say (12 + 4)/8 and then (12 + 2)/8... or 4/4 and 7/8 if you love to tie notes
With a steady pulse starting on the first 'chug' you CAN count: 6 beats 8 beats 10 beats (kinda 8+2) 8 beats Then the whole measure repeats. Throws you a bit as the second time through is pre-empted (the chug comes in one beat early but then falls back into line). I mean, that could just be seen as 4/4 (32 total beats), but it certainly doesn't sound like it. Really enjoying these. Wish Sessanta was leaving the States... :(
i've been around since your first NIN analysis and i'm not the type to comment nonsense for no reason but you got me fascinated here 1. Maynard 2. your take on the track and last but not least 3. your laid back attitude and humble way to open our eyes to things we didn't know was hidden inside our fav songs, i salute you! total respect 🖤
The finality of that last note is absolutely crushing. Love your work on these videos, and really appreciate the depth of the analysis. Thanks for sharing them!
This whole album is a masterclass in song crafting. You're right: none of it feels technical or forced, because it's not - it's emotive and expressive. That's the Art. These songs just never get old... :)
28:45 Coalesce! and the fact that he screams it always made me feel like he's demanding that (broken) person he's upset with put themself back together. (edit: I guess it's not, ugh) Absolutely love your breakdowns as always, ixi! These are always delightful!
I really did think it was coalesce as well. It's so weird. So I've watched this live version a few times and it seems it really is 'over this'. Why do we think it is coalesce? ruclips.net/video/uXlKkzjkheg/видео.html
One of my favourite records ever! It's one of those gems where every second to second is just sublime. You can drop the needle anywhere and it'll always land on a great bit.
Billy Howerdel, thank God you wrote 13th Step… respect. Love to hear you play these amazing songs/analysis from your piano brings such depth to our favorites… 🙏 ixi
This is the magic of “Hijaz” or Western “Phrygian Dominant” or “Harmonic Minor #5”… This is Arabic/Moorish and ancient, as it was used as a basis of the roots of Flamenco, you can still hear hear it in the form called “Bulerias”. I do love how it crosses over nicely to rock music, and nobody does it better in rock than the Perfect Circle ⭕️
This album was my shit back when it came out. Many medicated mornings on the school bus with this in my portable cd player. I think the lyrics escaped me at the time. Lol
This is one of those songs that aways gets me choked up and gives me chills/frisson. Watching you breaking down and singing the chorus while I'm on a train, it took some effort not to cry like a bitch in public just now lol. Great job as always, love watching your content.
I missed this one, another album for the ages. I miss APC, I never got quite as interested by Puscifer and Maynard's other ventures, Like Mezzanine (dissolved girl/matrix) the funny part with this one is the first time I heard it was on another movie (Constantine/passive) and immediately go "what is that, I want to hear more of it".
Such a great analysis, thank you! I managed to get the individual stems for this song off some forum years ago. The guitar tracks are so beautifully layered with all these little intricacies and elements that you don't hear in the final mix. The first verse in particular has these C# major chords being played ever so subtly over the guitar feedback.
It’s interesting because this album was created shortly after Layne Staley passed away. Back in the early 90s AIC performed with Tool right before Tool released Undertow. Again music is always interpreted differently depending on the person listening to it. But this song has so many different themes going on it.
Loved this song for years now, and recently I also grew to love your channel that is fairly new to me. Such great musical analysis, I learned a lot from your videos already, things i actively try to incorporate in my playing and writing. Thank you, and also all the wonderful people sponsoring this awesome channel. 👏 Cheers, from one of your fans in Israel.
some day long in the future after you are all retired you will make so many people happy playing piano in a bar somewhere with really cool characters. and maybe if we are lucky we may wander in some day thank you
I would love to see your reaction to the beauty of Puscifer. The voices and the energy of Maynard and Carina along with the incredible musicianship of the whole band has become an obsession for me. The Underwhelming and UPGrade are current favourites, but the whole Existential Reckoning album is a masterpiece. Your reactions and breakdowns are wonderful. Thank you.
it's funny i guess it shows how you hear what you want/need to hear in a song you love i took it as a self-help instruction manual dis-connecting and dis-assembling the old broken self it works good on taking the ego down some notches ymmv hehehehe most of the things that seem bad can be turned around are pretty good actually emphasis on seem
I wish u would break down Carina rounds songs she is goddam brilliant her first 3 albums are beyond words...incase u haven't heard much of her music the some time and listen to songs like "let it fall" (there's a brilliant live version of it here on RUclips which breaks the brain😂) "lacuna", "on leaving", "everything a reason", "weird dream", "ribbons", "do you" for starters to get u into her music...trust me it will be like discovering tori amos all over again
0:31 just to clarify; the song is not necessarily about suicide. "The Outsider" represents one who does not understand what it is like to be addicted to drugs; in this case, specifically heroin. The lyrics "over this white water, throw it away like this" and "one bullet at a time" allude to the use of drugs; white water being the drug itself and bullet possibly representing an injection(shot).
I saw somewhere that the song was inspired by a friend of Maynard who was going through addiction, but the friends brother was so out of touch with this issue, and so oblivious, that he was considered an outsider to the issue.
Ok, since you're on the subject of A Perfect Circle, Im gonna need you to do a Disillusioned tutorial/video. I've looked all over RUclips & CAN NOT find 1. Its up to you to correct this major oversight. Lol! 😈🤟
I had always heard this was a rant directed toward Trent Reznor. To me, that "drama queen" section is 4/4 but Maynard is hitting off-beats (frequently the 3rd) with the vocals. Unless I misunderstood the question.
Nothing to do with T-Rez. Maynard said in multiple interviews (including on the aMotion DVD) that the lyrics are satirizing judgmental people who don't understand what their friends with addiction or depression are going through. One of these quotes is in the Wikipedia article for the song.
Look at you! You got a fancy invisible/virtual master volume now eh? Soon you'll be Tom Cruisin' the Minority Report heads up display situation with the floating parameters all over the place...NEATO...and also kinda scary...be careful beautiful.
I remember hearing him mention on the old Thirteenth Step dvd that this song and a lot of the album is about his ex-wife or an ex-girlfriend that had a heroin problem. He didn't know for a while "I just thought she was tired" Wouldn't be surprised if it was about his son's mother. But of course he always phrases things in a way to allow your personal interpretation while keeping his personal story hidden.
How do *you* count the "drama queen" section?
I think it's 4/4 but there's a weird 7/8 measure when he says "picture perfect numb belligerence"...and then when that section repeats before the change I believe it's back to 4.
the fuckin lyrics from this dude. holy shit
8/8 but with a 3+5 feel? It's flanked by a lot of 6/8
I hear it as 6+2 (not 8) the "medicated" hits on 5; and the turn around (picture perfect non-belligerence) is 3+3+2
I always base counting on 3s and 2s in my head.
3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 2 (three times)
3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 2
Time sig I would say (12 + 4)/8 and then (12 + 2)/8... or 4/4 and 7/8 if you love to tie notes
With a steady pulse starting on the first 'chug' you CAN count:
6 beats
8 beats
10 beats (kinda 8+2)
8 beats
Then the whole measure repeats.
Thirteenth step is one of my all time favorite albums
please continue and do the Noose.
Noose is spectacular
Yes please!
Always loved this song especially the "disconnect and..." part. Hearing the chord changes on piano here make me want to hear Tori Amos cover this song
i've been around since your first NIN analysis and i'm not the type to comment nonsense for no reason but you got me fascinated here 1. I love listening to a school educated person describe why music sounds cool.
Maynard is a genius, imo. He can write and sing across multiple genres and is just as potent and profound. Along with Trent, they are my two idols.
Ixi every time she hears the harmonics: Aaaaahhgggggg those harmonics!!! hahaha I love you!
The finality of that last note is absolutely crushing. Love your work on these videos, and really appreciate the depth of the analysis. Thanks for sharing them!

@@gressex7 Ew, I'm listening super closely and you're right and now I hate that it's not Coalesce. That always made sooooo much sense to me.
Your vocal tuning is on point.
The melodic line of "they were right about you" is very similar to AEnema's "I'm praying for rain" and Talk Talk's "Try walking like Jesus'.
From a lyrical perspective, this line really cuts deep. It's such a calculated and hurtful thing to say to someone.
It's one of his cliché melodic cells then
Your content is so friggin awesome!! Much love to you and your fantastic analyses 🎉

i think nobody's going to hate it if you did the whole Thirteenth Step
Vanishing is my personal favourite
I was at the Detroit Michigan show. All three bands were amazing
very amazing analytics, good job!
this song is basically the guy singing saying "have you tried not being depressed"
I absolutely love this album. I got to see APC a fews years back and they killed it live.
I missed this one, another album for the ages. Give it up for Josh Freese on the drums. Incredible work.

5:55 "cats only step its back paw whereas its from have once" at praxis. Haha beautiful
I'm dying for your analysis of Vanishing 😍

I was at Sessanta on the same night. Was an amazing night of music.
Loved this song for years now, and recently I also grew to love your channel that is fairly new to me.

Beautiful Interesting Reaction!
This whole song has a 3 against 2 feel
what a fantastic experience I had with this thought-provoking step by step exploration of music thank you for this!!
These videos are so much fun to watch. So cool.
Maynard is so great, thank you Lady IxI, that was an awesome breakdown 🥰🙌✨

Been loving your content, long form content gang unite!❤
My fav. Subject matter is deep. Psychedelic guitar. Fat bass. Josh freese’s drums are MONSTER
I was thinking about trying this one, this makes me want to do it on the piano. Thanks!
@iximusic, one of my all-time favourite songs ! loved your breakdown analysis ..duh..and the apocalypse mix of this track. Mind=melt! Ear=Gasm!
For some reason I thought MJK's scream at the end of that chorus was "coalesce"... "co-a-lesce". But yeah, incorrect lol.
Haha..same here. It's been so many years singing it that way, it's probably staying coalesce in my head anyway.
This song always makes me want to tune my guitar down to C#
Its about Trent Reznor and Maynards interactions with him on tour
it's funny
i guess it shows how you hear what you want/need to hear in a song you love
i took it as a self-help instruction manual
dis-connecting and dis-assembling the old broken self
it works good on taking the ego down some notches
ymmv
hehehehe
most of the things that seem bad can be turned around are pretty good actually

Thank oyu!!
Great concert.

This chorus has so much weight. Great analysis.
As far as I'm concerned, you can analyze the whole record, if you want.
Which show did you go to? The Houston show was amazing. :)
thank you for the analisis, are you ready for Heilung? there is a full live concert from them called LIFA. I hope you enjoy!
Check out Tool 46&2

The drummer is Josh Freeze not Carey
Bass is played with a pick.
light of the seven ramin djawadi
6/8

Nah I'm just having fun with editing, no fancy controls! But...I did watch Minority Report 2 nights ago haha!
love the song but HATE the music video

Love the cat on the keyboard cameo!
