This song is maybe the most important song in my life. I cannot tell you how many times ive been in such a low dark place and this song pulled me out. Its so hard to listen to tool now for me because its such a rollercoaster of emotion. The song plays and im bombarded with flashes of scenes of my life. Like from a movie. These illuminated areas reinvigorate my enthusiasm for songs that haven’t hit me in that special way in years. This really is such a special song (and entire record) not even to touch on its lyrical content. This is the fruit of a great band at its greatest. Lateralus Lyrics and The Fibonacci Sequence
Maynard structured and sung the lyrics using the first 7(1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13) numbers in the Fibonacci Sequence. Each number in the sequence denotes the amount of syllable(s) he sings before he adds a slight pause in his phrasing to (indicate/separate) the movement to the next number in sequence. The full pattern can be seen at the end.
(Please feel free to let me know if any mistakes or if I missed anything - I'll edit/update the post)
    Section 1
    [Verse 1]
    Black - 1
    Then - 1
    White are - 2
    All I see - 3
    In my infancy - 5
Red and yellow then came to be - 8
Reaching out to me - 5
    Lets me see - 3
[Pre-Chorus - He jumps straight to 13 breaking the pattern, making the first verse seem "incomplete"]
As below so above and beyond I imagine - 13
Drawn beyond the lines of reason - 8
    Push the envelope - 5
    Watch it bend - 3
Chorus and Post Chorus don't use the sequence
    Section 2
    [Verse 1 Repeated]
    Black - 1
    Then - 1
    White are - 2
    All I see - 3
    In my infancy - 5
Red and yellow then came to be - 8
Reaching out to me - 5
    Lets me see - 3
[Verse 2 - this "completes" the piece of the pattern that section 1 one was missing between V1 and the Pre-Chorus)
    There is - 2
    So - 1
    Much - 1
    More and - 2
    Beckons me - 3
To look through to these - 5
    Infinite possibilities - 8
    [Pre-Chorus]
As below so above and beyond I imagine - 13
Drawn beyond the lines of reason - 8
    Push the envelope - 5
    Watch it bend - 3
    *********
The pattern of the 2 sections looks like this:
    Section 1
    Verse 1 and Pre Chorus
    1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 5, 3 / 13, 8, 5, 3
    Section 2
    V1R/ V2/ PC
    1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 5, 3 / 2, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 / 13, 8, 5, 3

you listen through the entire piece before you start to react. That's unique because most channels pause so much to make the youtube algorithm not recognize the song.
I love it, and I'm really excited to hear what you have to say about a song like this after you have let the whole thing play!!!!

I do that when a) time allows and b) the publisher will allow me to do it without blocking my video. But I usually do have to cut it up unfortunately. For this one, I knew that Tool fans' concept of time is different and y'all would definitely watch a 50 minute video about 1 song. :D

I really enjoyed your analysis. Your interpretation of the time signature changes is very intuitive and helpful for musicians to know.
The "octave sound" you were talking about and the end, I don't know exactly what gear Adam plays it with, but I don't use any effect pedals other than distortion and I play it using pinch harmonics with my pick and thumb pinching the string which makes every note ring an octave higher. It sounds pretty much the same so he might be doing that, and probably definitely doing it that live.
    Also, Keep Austin Weird 🤘

I once got booted from a band for sounding too much like MJK. It was the best firing I ever received.
