Hi friends.
Thanks for checking this out. You might also enjoy my analysis of Stairway to Heaven!

:)
Excellent analysis! For me, it is 3/8*4 (compound time), 2/8; 3/8*4 (ct again), 2/8, 5/8
I love that Carey is wearing a #33 jersey in his live drum video of Pneuma. Like he knew we'd all be trying to figure out that 33/8 verse, when it's right in front of our faces the entire time 😂
Average Tool fan when you ask what their favourite song sounds like
Sometimes I wonder if TOOL has ever written a song with so many complicated time signatures that even they lose track. I'd be interested in hearing more on Danny's drums in that jam session because when I've watched the Vic Firth video of him playing it, it looks like each hand and the foot playing the high hat are all on different but regularly converging time signatures. I can't even walk and chew gum at the same time and he has separate brains for each limb in his body.
🐙
That's blaspheme, implying that Danny could create a rhythm so complex he couldn't keep count is like asking if God could make a boulder so big he couldn't lift it... though 1 is a contradiction so intense it could break ones perception of reality and have them question their beliefs to the point of letting go of all of their ingrained indoctrinated notions of self, the other is just religious nonsense.
you can't walk and chew gum at the same time? Whoa 🤭🤐😳
Danny can play 4 rhythms at the same time. 5 if he takes his shorts off.
He does that in Rosetta Stoned too. Each of his limbs is playing in pace with the bass or guitars, one of his own and one in pace with Maynard until everything aligns in the climax of the song (which is by no means simpler and is a BITCH to get right 😂)
Insane analysis, I hope many people hyped up by all the danny drumming find this vid!
Danny's drumming is outta sight!
Still Hyped up here!
But not just from Danny‽
We R, Pneuma
I love your Tool deep analysis videos. I know just enough music theory to follow along _most_ of the time, while being reminded of how much I don't know. Analyses like this also have a lot to teach about songwriting, and I appreciate your observation that Tool are masters of fully developing a few simple motifs; it's what makes their songs feel very creative but very cohesive at the same time.
Glad it was helpful to you, friend xd
You should do "Descending". I feel that song needs more attention, it's like a dark fantasy epic.
I'll add it to the list ;)
@@AslanJazzLan Please 😃
@@AslanJazzLan Thank you! The minute from 5:50 to 6:50 is one of the finest pieces of music I've ever heard in my entire life.
@@fabianholzheid282 I'm just taking a listen back now and you're right. This is fantastic.
I have a study break coming up soon and I'm going to dig in!
@@AslanJazzLan dig in, its about climate and collapse, and is GREAT
I didn’t think we were gonna get to see this! I’m so glad we did. Thank you for making them man and here’s to hoping for more tool analysis’s lol.
The song is a masterpiece, and I will fight you over it.
This should have way more views, everyone must hear this
I have tried to sit through this. Don't get me wrong- I love this video and this show the real beauty of Tool. The only problem? I keep pausing to go listen to Tool lol
Ok for real tho
We really appreciate the time involved in breaking down this epic song. I think this song will be talked about for a long time. Great video!
Its good to see your still making videos! Great analysis!
Wow. You are one patient and determined person to work all this out! It's quite clever. I get how someone could use these varying time signatures to compose a song but if they can play this live, without any written music in front of them that's really impressive.
The best part of the video is hearing parts of this masterpiece for 40 minutes :) Incredible analysis! Thank you!
I love how you did the technical analysis of polyrythms and harmonics but at the same time put so much emphasis on lyrics and spirit of the song. Final words make me shiver. Thank you.
Seriously cannot thank you enough for this video.
honestly an amazing video, keep up the good work
Wow. What a thorough breakdown, I'm impressed you fit it into 36 minutes. The editing must've taken weeks. Thank you 🙏
I'm glad you enjoyed! Oh yeah, the editing took a very long time o.o
Awesome video man. Pneuma was the first piece from them I listened to, about 2 months after the Fear Inoculum dropped, never hearing of the band. I could appreciate the music but never fully understood the greatness of what I was listening until I saw them live in Sydney. Changed my life. I love this song and now I can appreciate it more thanks to your video. Thanks :)
Holy shit!!! Well welcome my man!!/
Oh… my… GOD THIS WAS SUCH A GOOD VIDEO! EVERY LITTLE DETAIL IS SPOT ON! I hit the subscribe button like 10 minutes into this video. Thank you so much for this masterclass on this masterful group.
I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for your kind words.
9:09 absolutely agree I love this song
Cool to see another analysis Mike! Its so interesting to see how richly complex Tool's songs are, thank God I retained some music theory from childhood choir lol great video!! 😊
Awesome video! Glad I took the time to watch this
Broooo! This is absolute gold!! Thanks so much for putting this together! I appreciate all the time this must take! Your production level is soooo good! I also love the memes .. I find myself in awe of tool one second and then next second laughing at the quick meme that flashes across the screen. It is criminal that this has only 1200 views! This needs more love 😘
Thanks, friend. I really appreciate it xd
Been listening to Tool and playing drums for years and I feel their genius in the music but to have it explained to me was amazing to say the least
Amazing breakdown. I can only imagine the time you put into this. Thank you.
I'm glad you got something out of it :D
Very well done! Thanks for the great video. :)
Great analysis!!!
"collasle thundering final course".... love the way you express the music into words
Insane analysis, you help me confirm some stuff and understand some other. I hope your channel gets more attention, it really deserve it! 11 out of 10!

Glad you got something out of it!
Wow! This is soo good, thanks for doing it.
I’m going to have to come back to this a few times, but I can say without doubt that your analysis has helped me understand and enjoy this masterpiece better. What got me initially was that D maj - I also feel that hard!
Instant subscribe. Wow. Excellent breakdown.

u are amazing and im thankfull for this breakdown analysis!!
i loved this song for years and i do music to some degree, learned alot from this video. Thank you.
This channel and videos deserve more than this. Very very good job mate.
Much appreciated!
Impeccable musical acumen in your analysis! Now my head hurts, but thank you for taking the time to unravel this mind boggling masterpiece!
Glad you enjoyed it!
So brilliant! Thank you.
My music knowledge is nonexistent but I love learning. I’ve been listening to tool since opiate. This is the best breakdown of a song I’ve ever come across.
Thank you! Great clear explanation of polyrhythm, time signatures and motifs.
I'm glad you found it useful!
you’re sick, dude! Thx 🖤
How a tabla's sounds can remind you a tabla ??
That's a really great video man , my first ! keep it up !
You are a genius. Never heard such an in depth analysis combined with creative video. Thanks for the many hours it must have taken to produce this masterpiece!
You're far too kind 🥰 you made my day
Very cool, very helpful, thank you!!!
thank you so much for this analysis. great great work.
You're most welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙂
This is awesome dude incredible, you have such good insights - kudos!!
Thank you! I'm glad you found it valuable ^.^
Brilliant job!
Great video man. Thank you🤘
Great video! Danny's flam-flam-flam is my favorite part of the song, such great a counterweight to Adam.
Wow. This is insanely good. Well done and thank you
Glad you liked it! 😁
Amazing analysis, I don't know enough about music to fully appreciate it but I've loved TOOL for most of my life.
Glad you found some value in it ^.^
Great job!
I ❤️ this video so much
I have not the slightest idea what 99% of the technical song writing analysis was about. But I’ll give it a like because it’s comforting to know others geek out like I do on the next level art that TOOL has given us.
Wow! Just wow! I was blown away by another analysis video by someone named Austin (he actually performed the drum parts, which is really what I was after), but this at least takes the analysis part to a whole new level... so much to parse here... and the biggest credit to Tool is that other than taking the joy of head banging away from the less informed (if anyone can actually recover from being agape), most wouldn't even notice! Genius!
Thanks so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it. Imma have to go check out Austin's video.
Well done!
Thank you for this video
You're welcome 🤗
good video man
Wow. I loved TOOL before but this takes it up to another level. Amazing analysis. Please do more TOOL videos
I'm glad you enjoyed it ^.^ I'm working on a Toto one ATM. Will go back to TOOL eventually ;)
Thank you. Felt as if I was listening along and discussing this masterpiece with a friend🙏
Glad you found it valuable 😁
Well done mate.
Thankyou!! 🙏🙏🙏
AWESOME!!
thx man, well done! still hard to comprehend all that time signature magic they are doing
This my friend - was awesome. You even explained to this nob why I never resolve the metrics. Your 14/8 - 12/8 - 7/8 deconstruction was such an OOOOOH-moment. Now I can headbang it (No - No i don't want to look like a dash-mounted wobbly head). This leads me to a challenge for you.
Could you please consider to dissect what Danny does during the instrumental jam session? I have tried watching the video of him playing it - ever optimistic. Identifying that steady quarter-paced snare. The "tabla"-pad joyning with the triplets - the kick-drum joining the bass before he turns totally octopus on me - breaking my ability to keep the fractions under any kind of control. I know he is doing a trick with his right hand, as he simplifies the now-massive tension they have built up, by dropping the odd signatures down into the 4-squared before diving straight into the Pneuma-lyrics chorus pattern again.
As a geophysicist, this is killing me (though I can inform you that there are plenty of my colleagues who can not resolve a 4/4 pattern in any meaningful way both on and off a dance-floor).
I'm glad you got something out of this!
I will take a look at the jam tho I want to try diversify a little bit for my next few vids xd
Awesome analysis. At the end of the day, it's a fucken badass and easily became my new fave Tool song when it came out with Fear Inoculum.
We don't know are Intellect when it comes to music . Till some one shows us what is possible in music . This presentation is amazing from not just a rythem point of view we which is outstanding but also a as harmonic and melodic viewpoint is amazing. And also diffrent way to Improvise. This really opens the door to really understand complex musical ideas . Now I have a good way of connecting more and appreciating this type of music even more . GREAT JOB!
We don't know our intellect when it comes to spelling.
Amazing & educational! ‘This must have been a lot of work’ is an understatement I guess
Thanks so much! I'm glad you got something out of it :)
ty for all this great work! i hope you can give us more tool songs . Greetings from greece
I have a few more on the list. It takes me ages to produce the videos tho :0 Glad you enjoyed this
Enlightening, thanks👍
I am watching this while editing a Video, and I keep thinking what an overwhelming Task it must be to edit a Video like this one -- so much Complexity.
It did take me a friggin' long time >.>
amazing job, this hurt my brain.
This might be the coolest video I've ever seen.
🥰🤩🥰🤩🥰
Can't believe I missed this (damn you, youtube!), great work as always man!
Thanks for checking it out! You are my inspiration ;)
@@AslanJazzLan Haha, glad to hear it, but this is all you. Can't wait for more!
@@irti_pk thanks, friend.
Next is Africa by Toto. Currently edited 13 minutes out of 23 ;)
Have I not seen this before, instant sub
Thanks!
Very nice
Insane!
I'm a Prog rock fan, I would love to see this type of break down for Yes, ELP , early Genesis Moody Blues. Also a Tool Fan.
I'll add em to the list ;)
Jesus this is so good. I am a classical guy and had some of the album figured out(rhythm) but this one was eluding me. Thank you!
You're welcome! Glad you got something out of this 🙂
In other words, GOD LEVEL
Three quarters through watching this I decided to go back to studying for my architect professional certification because its way easier than trying to understand this. Having said that. Monster effort. Absolutely riveting. Made me realize that the dream of learning to play this on the drums will always remain just that ;)
I totally believe you can learn it! Just little steps 😃
SUBBBBED!!!!
FUCKIN’ AMAZING VIDEO! I learned, AND laughed my ass off! Well done!
Nicely done👍
Omgosh I didn't even think the intro is a polyrythim
I have a strong passion for polyrythims they're so cool
Who puts a thumbs down on these kinds of videos?? I try to imagine what kind of person would sit through this entire thing and think, "Yeah, fuck that." Thumbs down!! I guess some people just wanna watch the world burn.
damn that was genuinely really good
You seem surprised ;)
@@AslanJazzLan yeah because i just stumbled upon your channel
great work!
@@S1neWav_ glad you enjoyed it!
SO fucking brilliant.
Holy crap that was awesome. I wish I understood it.
Glad you like it xd
I reckon this will have properly penetrated me into Fear Inoculum now, thank you!!
I'm glad you found it valuable ☺️
The amount of work in this video😱😱
I did take a while 😂☺️
Oh and I forgot... I HATED music analysis when I was a kid, too much math for me. Thanks to this video I might have a renewed interest in it!
That makes me so happy! 😁
Jesus I want you to analyse some Dream Theater or Opeth
Opeth is a piece of cake, actually. Still love them
woooo 5,000th subscriber
Great video man. Jesus. I subbed. Well deserved.
Still can't square the verse guitar riff with the time signature. It's driving me nuts hahaha trying to learn this song for a Tool cover band
Thanks! Glad to enjoyed it.
Hmm yeah it can be tricky. I think it's valuable to learn the riff and play it along with a metronome and count out loud so you're really connecting with the time
I think, if you’re willing to do another one off Fear Inoculum, then Invincible is another amazing song.
Loved the vid!
