Just like old times, I caught a few things while editing that might be confusing, or that I may have skipped over. First though, I think you should visit www.youtube.com/@BeardStank and pester him to make more videos! He also drummed for the last segment (#7_ and I forgot to credit him but you can hear him shredding it. 🔴Realistically, #6 should say "some modes," not "most modes". 🔴at 07:09 I say that the melody is "E major" when I meant to just say "E". 🔴I really trashed the idea of m3 and M3 happening at the same time (or b7 and 7), but there's more to that story. I understand that some people won't hear that moment as dissonant as I do and that's okay. M3 and m3 actually get mixed frequently in some styles like blues and rock and it sounds awesome. Despite that, playing G natural over an E7 chord in this specific setting triggers my ear to hear it as "wrong music." Just my tastes though, so don't take this rule of "don't mix 7ths/3rds" as sacrosanct. 🔴When you replace the b7 in Dorian with regular 7 you end up with the melodic minor scale. While melodic minor is rarely if ever composed "in," it often shows up in brief moments like this. If you understand #6 in this video you'll understand what "melodic minor" actually is referring to. 🔴I say E major a lot when I mean E7, but in this context, the two are basically interchangeable. When we talk about V in minor keys, it's expected that it might be seen as V7. You're not adding anything new to the mix when you turn V into V7, since its chordal 7th is just the 2nd of the key. 🔴The chorus for "Comfortably Numb" is in D major but it also "breaks the scale" a bit like we discuss in #2 by introducing a C chord, which is bVII. You can think of this as being borrowed from Mixolydian if you like or you can simply think of it as b7 temporarily taking over for natural 7. ph 🔴That Db/F chord is a Neapolotian 6th chord. I haven't done a lesson on it yet but hear how nicely it moves to V, which is played as Vsus4 first. Simply put, it's bII in first inversion going to V or V7. -When describing chords in the key of Bm I called A the "natural diatonic 7th." This is confusing because "natural 7th" means leading tone and not b7. I meant the word "natural" in the sense that it "naturally occurs in minor" but upon editing I realized how poor of a phrasing that is. Just imagine I said "diatonic" instead of "natural" in that section please! 🔴My promo for the online book has a typo in the text lol… at the time, a bunch of flat signs went missing but it's been fixed. 🔴By the end of January I expect to be able to take orders and ship the physical Chord Progression Codex to most countries. The sheer size of the book (430 pages) combined with the fact that it's spiral bound means that many print-on-demand companies won't work with me though, which is why things are taking additional time. So check back soon if you want the physical book but don't live in the US! LASTLY - I'm immensely happy to be back on youtube again. I know that might sound weird but really, the book thing was overwhelming. Though I finally got it to where I'm happy with it, the process took way more time, money, and effort than I wanted to invest. Today marks the end of that road though and I'm legit glad to say that my job for the next few years is to make fun youtube videos again!
I totally understand the book being overwhelming. You put a TON of really great information in it. And while I've missed your videos, I feel like in the long run I'm going to learn so much from the book.
Welcome back, brother! I have missed your videos. I remembered your book part but then I thought tgat probably you have given up on youtube. It is good to have you back!

I'm a guitar instructor and I've been teaching this topic for about 20 years now. I will say that your presentation here was one of the most thorough and comprehensive that I have seen or even heard of as this topic is the one that many teachers fall short with. The way you broke it up into 7 methods is brilliant and you also have the gift of being able to deliver your teaching effectively which unfortunately is not common enough in the world of teaching music. Great playing too and excellent work with the melodies you created and the way you connected them to the intervals being introduced. You even went a little into the emotional aspects of the intervals and I usually only see that in music from the east with the microtonal scales. I like to give credit where credit is due and you are a fantastic and I would say extremely competent instructor. It's obvious that you care about what you're doing too which is the way in which you and I are the most similar. I hope many new guitarists who decide to really dive into theory find you so you can help prevent the potential musical illiteracy that threatens the world right now. What you're doing is far more important than probably you even know. I tip my hat to you good sir, your skills are needed very badly and I wish you all the best. May the rock and roll gods be with you. Jeff
Damn, right! This guy is awesome! And I lately saw a vid of NewJazz about all 33 scales. Damn. That was dope! I am a hobby drummer, actually, so just knew about descaling ... Anyway. I am here with my Cubase and Ableton and wanna start to write something. For the most mates, there is only mayor and minor and a few months ago I got to know mixolydian b6... huh! As a drummer?! Great stuff! Nice to have you bach here!
DearJake,... So many people--myself included--are so glad to see you back with a new video! You truly have a gift for helping people find the beauty in music... but more than that, you help them find *their* music inside themselves. Seriously bro, you taught me more than any other RUclips channel over the years. I hope this is one of many more to come in 2024. Cheers!!
Not only excellent music, but you present the concepts in a clear, concise manner that is easily understood. Especially the songwriting mechanics, just beautiful!
Thank god you started posting again. I loved the Major to lydian modulation. Sounded lovely. You seem to really understand modes unlike other composers who see modes as different colors of major. What i learnt from my exposure to Indian and Persian modal music is that- these styles employe specific phrases of every mode, bringing out very specific flavours out of each tetrachord. Its an immensely interesting concept. If we contine to think of modes in terms of degrees of brightness a lot of this modal flavor would be missed. There are a few cultures that identify the phrygian and other non major scale modes as happier or cheerful scales. To them major doesnt mean much. And there are times when Dorian can sound like funeral music. Modes unlock unlimited possibility when we think of them in terms of phrases.
The man that kickstarted my journey is back!! 🔥🔥 And even after a year he manages to explain something clearly I have not learnt yet, great to see you again king 💪
I believe you meant Schrödinger, not Heisenberg. Regardless, very happy you’ve returned to RUclips. Your method of instruction has been the most effective at teaching me music theory. A perfect balance of theory and illustrative examples. Thank you!

@@SignalsMusicStudio My use of it is actually as an extremely up-front, not-rock-at-all in my song Bittersweet Serenity. There's something about the synth I made that fits the chord just perfectly - the rub between C and C# is reduced _just_ enough to be beautiful instead of grating.
There's certainly a time and a place for it. V7#9 specifically uses both thirds and sounds amazing in a lot of uses going back to i or I. Its why i clarified in my pinned comment about how i think i was unneccesarily harsh in my rant on it... but still, in this scenario i hate b7 lol. @@smergthedargon8974

This such a great start to the year!!! I'm so excited for a new video. You have taught me SO MUCH. I've been playing for about 10 years but never got past learning basic chords and reading tabs. Covid hit, I had a lot of downtime, and I got into music theory because of your videos. Now it's one of my biggest passions. You've changed lives..
Some channels I just open the new video then hit like before anything then watch whatever is there. Jake is one of the best music education channels I have ever seen. Thanks man. Always good to get introduced to new fresh ideas.
You can probably spend all 2024 exploring the possibilities laid out in this video. Excellent stuff as always and I really appreciate the always very musical examples, which always add additional creative ideas to pick up.
Hey Jake, good to see you back in the old youtu-verse, man! No chance for us europeans to get to your physical books, though? I'd very much like the opportunity to dive into that monstrous thing.... whats weird is how good the mixed 7ths (or 3rds) actually sound in a blues context. probably gonna have to do a video all about "the clashing of the 3rds"
So glad to see that you are back with another great and helpful video, Jake! You are a source of knowledge and inspiration. A true gift for us in the musician community around the world! Thank you so much!
This guy makes music sound so colorful , the jumper he’s wearing was white before he put it on. This Coco Chanel is top ace for learning arranging with guitar.
This video would of helped me out so so much like 20 years or more ago (If only RUclips was around like it is today back then)! I remember asking my friend who had a degree in classical composition something along the lines of "How do I know what chords I can play, and when, when in a certain key?" and "How do I go about combining different keys in one song?" and "What's the point of keys if people just play chords and notes not from that key all throughout the song?" and "How do you assign a key if there's so many different chords and notes from other keys being played all the time?" His answer was something like "You can pretty much just play anything you want, whenever you want." Which is technically true, but extremely unhelpful to someone asking that question who's clearly trying to grasp certain specific concepts that they don't understand and potentially don't even know about, but just know that they don't know something and can't ask the exact right question to get to that knowledge, due to their lack of foundational knowledge allowing them to know how/what to ask lol. I figured it out eventually by myself, but it would of saved a whole lot of bother if I could of just watched this; As this answers the most fundamentally hard thing to get your head around when first getting into music composition and wanting to fully grasp the guiding theoretical concepts (at least from my experience)! ;)
I will never write a single piece of music in my life. But man do I love Jake’s videos! I’ve played guitar for 30 years and your teaching has really helped me understand the finer points of chords so much. Jake, you are such an amazing teacher. Thank you for everything you do for the RUclips community.

Scarborough Fair from S&G is probably one of the best examples of Dorian mode songs, that gives the whimsical vibe that it's expected to deliver. Never thought that I could wrap my head around modes let alone create something musical with them. Every Jake Lizzio video has been a Eureka moment for me so far 🙂 🙌.
I had no idea you were writing a book. Glad to have you back on YT. You're probably the best on here. It is your channel I recommend to anyone learning music theory.

This video changed the way I make my songs and I am so happy because it feels so good when something finally clicks in your brain. I was having trouble finishing my songs, I still do to be honest lol. But I'm doing a lot better now
Welcome back! I’m so glad to see that you’re still with us. I was genuinely worried that something bad had happened to you. I’m being serious. I’m glad that you appear to be doing well.
At least once a year I rewatch your “riffing with modes” series. It revives the passion to create music in me, and shows how easy it can be. I feel like it’s gonna be the same with this video. So so so glad you’re back
This comment will get lost in amongst all the others and just reflects what many will say......glad to see you back. Definitely one of the best and most interesting music educators out there. Excellent as usual.
Glad everything is fine with you and you accomplished writing a book. Really, it's always scary when a content creator simply vanishes and then I figure out something unexpected happened (health issues, grief,...) Thanks for the content

So glad to see you back here; missed your videos so much! 1:45-2:12 Focusing on the tonal center with using modes has caused SO many arguments over the years. People get so confused with it!

Very happy to see you back. Still the most useful and easy to learn from theory channel on YT bar none.
Jake
Simply put ..
I appreciate all your hard work, you are an awesome teacher and talented musician. I've been following and supporting you for several years.
Rock on Jake !
I was getting some Dream Theater vibes from that last section. Awesome work you're doing here! 😎
You are such a wonderful teacher. It's so good to have you back.
I have MISSED this channel! It's one of the few that I come back to every couple of weeks to see if anything new has been posted. It's been a while. I'm sure you (Jake) have kept super busy. Welcome back!
This video changed the way I make my songs and I am so happy because it feels so good when something finally clicks in your brain. I was having trouble finishing my songs, I still do to be honest lol. But I'm doing a lot better now
one of the more intelligent guitar instruction channels--very much worth your time--this guy knows his stuff
Best youtube music teacher. I've learned more from these videos than everything else combined in a fraction of the time.
10:16 man this is total bop. the transition to aeolian really is immensely satisfying.
Welcome back! I’m so glad to see that you’re still with us. I was genuinely worried that something bad had happened to you. I’m being serious. I’m glad that you appear to be doing well.
Two things I love most. Using modes and Signals Music Studio. Welcome back!
At least once a year I rewatch your “riffing with modes” series. It revives the passion to create music in me, and shows how easy it can be. I feel like it’s gonna be the same with this video. So so so glad you’re back
Thanks for coming back. Your intervals lesson did more for my understanding than 5 years of in person lessons. Sincerely, thank you.
This comment will get lost in amongst all the others and just reflects what many will say......glad to see you back. Definitely one of the best and most interesting music educators out there. Excellent as usual.
Glad everything is fine with you and you accomplished writing a book. Really, it's always scary when a content creator simply vanishes and then I figure out something unexpected happened (health issues, grief,...)
Thanks for the content
Sour note Gandalf gave me quite the guffaw. Bought the codex immediately man. Seriously my favorite music theory guru out here thank you Jake Lizzio!
Happy New Year, Jake! Great to see you again.✨
Best music theory channel on the internet comes back after the longest hiatus ever, doesnt even address his absence, launches right into it. Absolute legend
So glad to see you back here; missed your videos so much!
1:45-2:12 Focusing on the tonal center with using modes has caused SO many arguments over the years. People get so confused with it!
Nice to see you back. HNY!
Yay so good to see you, Happy New Year and you're fantastic!!
Love that you are back. Hopefully the hard copy comes to Canada soon. Happy New Year
