    The Japanese edition of Thirteenth Step has an extra 53 seconds on The Package, which features a final "take what's mine" in Maynard's head voice while the rest of the arrangement is gradually taken apart until it's just the two guitars repeating the main riff against the looping 3-pattern.
    I think the original fadeout was probably a good choice to maintain some energy and pacing into Weak and Powerless, but the extended version does an even better job showing us that we're right back where we started, while also allowing us to better hear the slight note variations that tease us in the fadeout version.

    I bought this album and my first listen was in my 1992 Mazda 929. It had a “decent” sound system.
    I had it cranked in the beginning, then the bass hit and blew out my two front speakers.
    This is one of my all time favorite albums. I would take it into different recording studios as one of my two “reference albums”. The other being Dark Side of the Moon.
    You use the album to figure out how a room and speakers sound. I know it so intimately that I can tell the difference in it depending on the room.
    Thank you for getting into this album. I’ve been hoping you would do it.

    The guitar part you were asking about in the first heavy section is dead notes being played across multiple strings. The strings are muted with the fretting hand - as opposed to a palm mute, which uses the picking hand - and the result is less tonal than a palm mute would be. The harmonics you hear are what you get when you do it with heavy distortion. In the last repetition of that section it sounds like he plays a natural harmonic instead. I think what you're talking about in the guitar solo is just a delay effect. I'd never noticed that before; it works really well there with how the lead guitar never lets up, so you can't hear the distinct repetitions as it's just another layer on top.
    Thanks for going over this song. I loved listening along for all the ways that the intensity very subtly rises and falls.

    • @silphv
      @silphv 7 месяцев назад

      Yeah the harmonic I hear in that first heavy part sounds like it's muted with a finger between the frets 2 and 3, giving the seventh harmonic. It's the first harmonic in the series that's far enough away (more than 25 cents) from any note in 12 tone equal that it's clearly a distinct microtone, it's about 31 cents flatter than a minor seventh, so it can sound pretty dissonant in this context. That's probably why he used it, it's the most dissonant harmonic that still rings out loudly and easily when played this way so it's intuitive here, but as far as how it feels I find the seventh harmonic in the context of all this Dorian mode stuff ends up being particularly emotive.

    • @silphv
      @silphv 7 месяцев назад

      37:55 In the video she picks out the note as a B, as close as you can get on a keyboard, but it's just a little flatter than that. The other less-dissonant harmonic that pops out would be the sixth harmonic (the fifth, up two octaves, G#). Also since these are muted power chords, these harmonics also have their own fifths (and heavy distortion brings out even more overtones)

    • @h4724-q6j
      @h4724-q6j 7 месяцев назад

      @@silphv I figured it was probably about there, I obviously don't know as much about harmonics as you do though :P
      I think that's also just a very natural place to rest, especially when you're playing the power chords up there anyway.

    • @silphv
      @silphv 7 месяцев назад

      @@h4724-q6j Yeah absolutely, he probably didn't overthink it. I think riffing in that area of the neck just sounds extra rich with distortion. I can't help but think of Zero by Smashing Pumpkins that works 3 or 4 harmonics in that area into the riff itself

    My favourite thing about how he sings the chorus is how he makes it legato, falling into a [n] sound between words so they're all connected. "Lii-ee-[nn]-to-get-[nn]-what-[n]-I-[n]-need-[n]-now." The [n] is always a fifth below, it's the lowest note in this vocal line and filling it in between every word makes it like a pedal tone, so his vocal melody has its own harmony rooted on G# minor basically.

    Another thing I always remember noticing from the first time I heard this with headphones - the chorus after the instrumental, Billy and James swap roles in playing that bass riff - you can hear the different tones in the guitars. Brilliant production and so minimal but once you hear it, you can’t unhear it.

    Yes, the tones are overlapping on the guitar for sure - the beating is there on the piano too, but with that aggressive distortion you're hearing them much more loudly. What's remarkable is how much that beating is somehow in time. As if it's rhythmically consonant with all the rest of the sonic insanity

    The fact that Maynard matches the note of the guitar harmonics @51:35 with inward breaths is absolute genius. It sounds so frighteningly desperate, which is the motif of the whole song, and it only happens once at the peak of intensity in the song. It's like someone hyperventilating audibly as they lose control. To me this is the best song ever written from the perspective of an addict, it's terrifying and heartbreaking simultaneously. At the end I just imagine someone clutching something with white knuckles, which they've just torn apart everything around them to obtain.

    I've so enjoyed the in-depth analyses of NIN that you've done, which have made me discover and love the band, that I was pleasantly shocked to discover that you were analysing a track that's on a loop in my playlist - The Package. I had such an evolution of love with this album. Coming from a full-time Tool listening past, I discovered and loved Mer de Noms cover to cover because it had such a new environment for MJK to play with. But, arriving to my first few listens of 13th, I was absolutely infatuated with the singles of the album, and found The Package as almost a barrier to entry. I reluctantly admit that I would skip it often to get to the meat of the album.
    That said, upon further listens I discovered the sheer euphoria of sinking into this song's nuances of rhythm, unbelievable dynamic crescendo, and masterful through-line of that repeating riff. I love how you call the motifs "Protagonists", it really gives a new perspective to the journey you take with familiar sounds in a song and how you want to see them evolve/come home/stay the path/experiment with new things etc.
    Your passion is infectious ixi, thank you so much for posting these.

    At 42:15, pretty sure those are octaves (actually the same exact note) being played on 2 different strings at the same time, but with a bend on the lower one. So, the 2 strings are played together but starting a whole step below on the lower sting. And, then you bend up and into the target note to make that screamy, wide, out of tune sound.

It's on RUclips but it sounds like it's been pitch-shifted by a half step (or in between steps) and I can't find the original anywhere. That's the only version of the song I listen to now though!

    This reminds me of the outdo to Ashes to Ashes. It repeats the same 3 chords over and over, but the vocal line repeats every 4 of those, so the whole thing loops every 12 chords. However, differently than The Package, the melody changes to match the chord, but it is different depending on what phrase is being said. Tricky to sing at first.

    Hi @iximusic, loved your breakdown of this song. Also I share the restraint not to reverse engineer such incredible songs but this one just stays intact and beautiful and gripping as ever. Question tough, do you know there is a Japanese edition of this song? I hope you don't because then you can make a follow up video on this one. I've found a version on RUclips:

    Spoiler alert: it's longer!!! 😂😊

    Am I the only one who hears the first bass note (C#) as an upbeat to the second note (E), making the E the downbeat/one? This shifts the whole song by one beat and the snare ends up on the three, so a typical backbeat. I've heard the song like this since I was a teenager, and I'm having a really hard time learning it the way you hear it. Was hoping this problem would be addressed here. Thanks anyway for your sensitive analysis, I share all your emotions! ❤

    The whole thing is in 4/4. That part just doesn't feel like it because of the speed. It's like 8th notes broken up over a couple measures. 3+3+3+4+3 = 16 It definitely doesn't feel like 4/4 but I would still write it that way.

    they're ummmm.......rimshots... they have to have another name. a geebz reference! OMG, i just realized this song is about getting drugs from the dealer, or plug as the kids nowadays say. 27:21 interesting delivery madam. To me now it's the character going to a dealers house and they're trying to friendly/friends and he's like "give me my drugs and take my money(take what's mine) so i can get high already" and the very end is him high off his ass.
    Awww, some songs can't help make you cry if they matter enough. I can't listen to supernatural (acoustic) by flyleaf with bawling... just thinking about it.

      Yeah haha what are they called? I'm pretty sure a rimshot is when they hit the stick against the rim while hitting the snare head, so it sounds like a loud, cracky snare. But just sticks on the rim? "rimsticking" haha. It all sounds terrible
