I'm envious of his personal/professional relationship with Trent Reznor. I've been patiently respecting Trent's process for six years. The wait on a new NIN album has been agitating. I couldn't imagine both of their geniuses collaborating. Let alone just listening to them both have a conversation about music & their influences together. Reznor has aided so many other musicians to perfect their sound. He put that clown shoe Manson in business. All while pumping out his own beautifully constructed brand of esoteric occultic magick sounds. Maynard & Trent know just how to bewitch the masses with finely tuned sorcery.
IDK about that. I'm a NIN fan from days gone but I haven't seen any good (or true NIN) material since Year Zero and it's remix album. And that was about 2007! And really With Teeth was the last true NIN album lets be honest. I hope that oscar wasn't a trap and he's not/now corrupted or limited to what he can do. Might explain it? I know artists often don't want to repeat what they've already done.. but Fuck!
@@ryanj.wheeler3295 I found "add violence" from 2017 to be the last decent project. "Bad witch" grew on me in that way NIN tends to over continued listening. The slip and Hesitation Marks are also full of gems. I agree with you on the brilliance of Year Zero & With Teeth. Those are superior albums to what came after. I'm more than impatient with Trent. He's constantly preoccupied with some very uninteresting movie score or a mediocre collaboration. The lackluster projects are getting to be very obnoxious. He has wasted his time with Atticus furthering a lame pop star career with Halsey. They make all these lame instrumental tracks and relish in all these dumb accolades for movie scores. I'm rendered sick of Trenty Boys shitty Danny Elfman side projects etc. I've lost hope nearly. All the socially engineered hiveminded fans praise all this nonsense new material he pumps out. So many lame human simulacrum/simulations or predictable archetypes with zero freewill being puppeted by the puppet master puppeteers. This so called fan base is none the wiser in this collective mind controlled consciousness. Everyone has mind control technology in their mutated DNA. It works in conjunction with specific frequencies/vibrations. Our boy Trent needs to put out more cryptic music about these esoteric occultic mysteries. As he has done in the past. He's got so much hidden in his music.
@@ryanj.wheeler3295 "With Teeth" was all about him being rewired through Luciferian Monarch mindcontrol in that so called "rehab" facility he got clean in. He was rewired through new programming. He was working through dissociative identity disorder because his mind was split into alter personalities through well designed traumas. He expresses this on almost every track on With Teeth.
I discovered him in ‘95 and he is still my favorite musician. I met my soulmate at one of his concerts. He loved Maynard more than I did(which was hard to believe at the time). He unfortunately was taken from this world by covid 4 years ago.
He's a great example of how you handle your business, with patience and an open-minded approach to be able to reap the benefits from the different doors of life. Some may have gotten frustrated and just moved to the next band altogether, some may have just wanted to stop making music, some may have had trouble with the newer band(s) because they were trying to carry the flair of the previous band.
Love this. It's weird to see one of your idols in a casual state without imagining him prowling between dimensions, Jiu Jitsu grabbing astral scavengers. Love him mentioning Trent, another one of my top musical idols, alongside Les Claypool. Just fun and soothing to watch. Thanks Rick. And yeah, the space between vocals is something people don't understand nowadays, let it grow, till it grows. Music is like plants, don't force the process. You know which band does a great job at leaving space between vocals? Mogwai :P
Maynard has such a cool set of music tastes, it always makes me feel wild how my predisposed idea of celebrities is just... idolization. Cool to be able to explore people like Maynard in any sort of depth! Makes me feel a lot less "oh man I'm just the little guy" and sure, at the end of the day I am the little guy. However, stuff like this humanizes people we look up to and see as - basically - gods.
Most of us have pretty broad tastes in music. I once thought that if I was in a successful band, would I be somewhat forced into creating songs in a specific musical language in order for the band to continue to be successful. Most bands have labels that pretty much demand that in that they want that formula over and over again. Bands often have a style, a sound that relates to them. But if you have more creative options and outlets like having another band to wax poetic musically so to speak, one could feel unlimited in being creative. Maynard has 2 additional outlets and among the 3 of them, none of them are similar to each other. In fact Puscifer is probably the the most unique of the 3 bands because of the outlandish humor. Dave Grohl and Josh Homme have collaborated on a number of ideas involving a sort of alter ego way of looking at and playing music that is far and away different from what we are most familiar with. I absolutely love the ability of an artist to just do something way out of the box and in a different context musically, not stuck with having to have that certain sound to please the label and have it be unique to the project and yet you love the strange familiarity of it as a listener. I do wonder how Maynard handles a tour where all 3 of those bands will alternate, A Perfect Circle one night and Puscifer the next gig and all the while you have Tool as your headlining gig. Exhausting to say the least. Plus Maynard isn't capable of of just phoning it in. He gives it 100% no matter what.
That was truly beautiful writing. It's awesome what he is doing with his life now. 3 bands, the vineyards, wineries, wine bars, a new chicken restaurant..all while also raising a daughter. The man must not need much sleep to be able to do all of that. Oh, and his jujitsu! Sweet Jesus. We are *truly* blessed/fortunate to hear such unique talent.
I've always seen his 3 bands as an outlet within the Esoteric teaching where *Tool* is his Active/Masculine self. *APC* is his Passive/Feminine self and *Puscifer* as his Neutral/Child-like self where he can experiment and just be himself and not have to carry a certain persona. Yet Puscifer wouldn't be the same band without the Perspective/Experience of being in the other 2 bands.
Nice!! I can't help but think of C.A.D. haha yep. He has never shied away from daring to be "different". Back when Yahoo had newsgroups, there were many "discussions" about just what you wrote about. Apc is definitely more "feminine" , and how incredible it is that we (fans) have embraced that gentle, soft and expressive side of him.
I love the last convo about long songs like Pink Floyd's Echos....I'm so glad I'm old enough to appreciate music that takes time to write and listen to.
This was a really solid interview, and it's pretty evident that MJK respects Rick. A really good conversation about the music that MJK is involved in creating.
I think the main reason why it takes so long for Tool to let out music is the complexity that they are after. As it is with any other art that you can actually call art. Its ready when its ready! I think thats what we are missing these days. Its like a production line pumping out garbage... fast out the door... get paid... another one... get paid. This phenomenon can be observed in pretty much any cathegory under the thumb of corporations and investors!
Great interview. I like how he approaches incorporating vocals in the music as his interpretation of the music. Also great insight into contrast and space. Tool are one of my favorite bands and Maynard is a genius.
well this was insightful. I always look for inspiration musically and on how to really digest instrumentals for writing melodies or lyrics. I'm 21 right now and will say that there are some of us who do appreciate these finer points of music, and appreciate the care that's put into it. cant say the same for most of the people around me aside from a select few
The thing that's amazing isn't that he has the three bands, it's that they're all outstanding. If you ask me which of the three is best, my answer would be "yes." I wouldn't want my music world to be without any of them.
@@SirPhilMcCrackinVonBeggingtonIf it's that simple for you, good for you. Tool songs > APC songs > Puscifer songs doesn't work for me. I love to hear from someone who has an original thought, an original lifestyle and is unapologetic and committed to it. I have immense respect for him and understand that he creates music for himself and doesn’t owe anyone for him to create and does it his way
When I see such people around, it gives me a great feeling that there is still a hope remaining for music, for the good quality music... my generation definitely knows what I'm talking about. Thanks for the interview, that's awesome!
Rick - Great interview. It's the first interview with Maynard that I have seen where he is very relaxed and shares some honest feelings with you. Very cool...
Tool and APC are my favorite bands, nothing beats the lyrics, atmosphere and feelings put in those songs
It keeps him sane, he is obviously very creative and to sit idle would be torture. Glad he is doing all 3, love each band. Also love the wine, makes for a great mix of music and good drinks
I have so much respect for Maynard. I have seen him in concert with Tool. I love the music of all 3 bands- for all different reasons. He is so deep and intelligent. His lyrics bring so much more than is on the surface. I’m such a fan.
Rick, you get the absolute best out of these icons in your interviews. I'll point to this interview as well as the one with Billy Corgan. You can tell that there is a mutual respect which makes for a great conversation with frank and open responses that I certainly don't see in other interviews.
Maynard also has a great technique for filling space in his vocals. Like the 'mm' before each line in 3 Libras.
Love those mm"s
Or the little "...yeah" after each line in the chorus of Eulogy
He does that to reach the note because the first sound is difficult for him to start on. It's an old Indian Carnatic vocal technique.
I love his outlook. Such a brilliant mind! Thank God he did end up making music. We need more like this
I cant actually say that I am truly a fan of anyone else on this planet.
But this guy. This dude here. So much respect. He knows the layers of hell. He’s felt them too. And he represents that to hold people in those spaces too. Thanks dude. I just wanna say thank you.
M.J.K. name-dropping Swans is awesome, Swans is the absolute greatest
It's cool to hear that Maynard likes Low. Very underrated band.
RIP Mimi
Black Sabbath and Joni Mitchell, only Maynard would say those two shaped his musical tastes. Love it.
Two really popular and respected artist? I think there are alot of people who like those two artist, myself included.
@@Limenibubanjzg Those two are very different musically. That's all I'm saying.
What a juicy interview..
Thank you Maynard, for sharing your art and shaping our lives.
It is amazing how Maynard describes the process of how tool makes their albums.
I adore how Maynard is so down to earth. Such love for him
The way he speaks of music atmospherically is awesome because I did the same with TOOL records. Different albums, songs for different parts of the day to create or compliment the scene.
I love Maynard! He’s on my top 3 favorite male vocalists. Did he say Tejano?! If so, I have far more love and respect for him. 🖤☮️
Awesome interview seen tool live twice hands down one of the best live bands out there musically and visually. Always loved Maynard such a cool dude.
I always love listening to Maynard. Such an intelligent guy. Very talented.
What a legend. There truly is no comparisons to Tool. How amazing is his shirts btw??????
So much comfort, joy and emotional release this man, and his bandmates, has given me. I will, forever, be indebted to him. Love each and everyone of his bands, and the people who work therein.
The 'mechanics' of music is fascinating with Maynard and Rick.
There is no bigger inspiration than this man
Pink Floyd is the bigger inspirationswhich inspired tens of great artists including Maynard himself.
Jibo D, IYHO, that is.
When he isnt cowering behind the drum set the whole show.
@Lunar Vania I think he is trying to show that it's a group effort... That others deserve the spotlight for their amazing creations... He is a very private guy he said he wears costumes and stuff for a reason.... He doesn't WANT to be worshipped. I think that shows a humble good person.....
Absolutely!
Try waiting on a new tool album then!
I can't stand how these annoying so called fans defend all this shit material he and Atticus put out. I swear everyone is under retarded brain dead hypnosis. This illusionary world is full of spiritless non playable characters or clueless empty organic portal vessels. Just robot zombie drones constantly reading prewritten dialogue from a generic holographic script.
Yet could not work together to save their lives lmao
Thank you for this, I've always, since 1991, admired this lyrical genius most inspiring man on earth is James Maynard
James Maynard LOL
I discovered him in ‘95 and he is still my favorite musician. I met my soulmate at one of his concerts. He loved Maynard more than I did(which was hard to believe at the time). He unfortunately was taken from this world by covid 4 years ago.
He's a great example of how you handle your business, with patience and an open-minded approach to be able to reap the benefits from the different doors of life. Some may have gotten frustrated and just moved to the next band altogether, some may have just wanted to stop making music, some may have had trouble with the newer band(s) because they were trying to carry the flair of the previous band.
Thank You Rick 🙏
Thank You Maynard 🙏
Maynard is just way to scary intelligent. Love listening to him
Low is a masterpiece, no wonder I love Tool and Maynard so much...back in our day music did have space 🙂
Maynard is a national treasure
Great interview, Rick. Maynard isn’t the easiest guy to connect with, but you crushed it. Got him to open up in a genuine way.
The quiet part in Disillusioned is powerful, sad, and beautiful.
The music came out exactly when it was meant to. Never rush perfection or it will never reach its potential.
perfect timing for an album entitled "Fear Inoculum"
This was a really solid interview, and it's pretty evident that MJK respects Rick. A really good conversation about the music that MJK is involved in creating.
I wish Maynard and Trent did a lot more work together!
We all do
There was a project called Tapeworm that never came about.
No wonder 13th Step is my all time personal fav album... Unsurpassed in all aspects of the musicianship and production to my heart and mind
One man 3 bands
Tool
A Perfect Circle
Puscifer
Thanks MJK for all you bring to us
I think the main reason why it takes so long for Tool to let out music is the complexity that they are after.
It's beginning to backfire in the film industry. Most movies are flopping because it's all garbage
I’ve always loved the pause in the drums with the noise. Never realized that way Maynard’s direction
Great interview. I like how he approaches incorporating vocals in the music as his interpretation of the music. Also great insight into contrast and space. Tool are one of my favorite bands and Maynard is a genius.
We need a tool tour. I have a 14 year old daughter that really wants to see them
I hope Maynard watches people who have never heard of Tool listen to their music. Omg. People are blown away. He gives me goosebumps from his vocals.
It’s utterly fascinating hearing him break down his creative/thought process
Back in my day, our music had space. 👽
well this was insightful.
Tool is the best, followed by the original line-up in APC--it's not rocket science.
@@SirPhilMcCrackinVonBeggington they're 3 completely different genres. You can't say one is better than another. Anyways thats subjective.
@@SirPhilMcCrackinVonBeggingtonIf it's that simple for you, good for you. Tool songs > APC songs > Puscifer songs doesn't work for me. There are songs from each band that I like better than some songs from the other bands. Yes, that does mean there are some Puscifer songs that I like better than some Tool songs.
@@theshapeexists Genre is an arbitrary distinction. Tool and Blink 182 are different genres too, you gonna try and tell me Tool isn't better than Blink?
@@reppost Your original comment was about bands, and now you're talking about songs cause... why? It makes less sense to compare individual songs than the actual bands.
Mad interview. I recall when 'Automatic for the people' was released on Dolby Atmos for the 30th anniversary.. Michael Stipe said he didn't realise the amount of "space" on that record.
I can definitely remember Tool's Aenima changing the way I thought about music.
That album itself we'll take you to another place in time, the view on music when it comes to TOOL is by far anything most people could comprehend. It's like listening to Pink Floyd for the first time 🤯
@@brandonguindon7455 Very true. The first Tool I heard was the Undertow album and it broke my brain (In a good way.)
@William Dennett Great album. The sad part is Maynard especially has made it quite clear they will never do another album like they did in the early days
@@brandonguindon7455 Tool is done anyway aren’t they?
@William Dennett What do you mean? They just released an album a couple years ago I think
I believe we can all agree that the world is a much much better place with Maynard in it 😉☺️
That shirt 😂
Great interview. The man is indeed a genius.
I grew up in the 90 & Maynard’s music will always be in my mind
Maynard is a genius.
I love that he mentioned Ahmad Jamal as the chosen soundtrack whilst picking. Jamals music totally changed the way I thought about sampling (as a hiphop producer). The rhythms are insane but so familiar!
I WANT THAT SHIRT!
What does the shirt say?

One thing I find interesting and hold the utmost respect for him is the fact he is a military veteran.
Been a true fan since the 90's and so glad Tool is still around
I love Maynard ❤ I respect him so much that it is difficult to fan boy over him.
Hell i'm only 40 and I already feel like the old man yelling at clouds when it comes to music that ends up on the billboard charts. In 18 years I doubt i'll care at all 😂

so much tool we could have had;
I would trade everything APC and puscifer ever did for one more Undertow-esque album.
