Tucked in the Black Hills of Yavapai County, Arizona, Jerome has long attracted intrepid characters. In the late 1800s, prospectors descended on the historic town looking to capitalize on its rich copper mines. Over a hundred years later, a different type of pioneer arrived: Maynard James Keenan. The Tool, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle frontman has carved out a uniquely anti-rock-star life in this rugged terrain, filled with winemaking, farming and community building. For two days this past July, Keenan extended a very special invitation to Revolver to join him during this summer's grape harvest. In Episode 1 of our multi-part series, he reveals how his work in Jerome helps create the friction that ignites his creativity.
He’s cracked the code for staying creative and satisfied. Participate in the world, nature, and be present.
I aspire to be even 1/10000th as effective a human as he is. I'm failing miserably.
Money helps, but he found himself some time ago now.
@@SeaOfMadness If you compare yourself to others you will always be miserable. WHy do it to yourself? think about what you have just written.
You know you've made it when you buy your own vineyard. This guys an absolute Tool.
@@SeaOfMadness I am as well, but also listen to the advice of not comapring yourself to others. Mr. Keenan has lived an extraordinary life, and it's all his! For you (and me, as well!) let's find a small dream or goal, and try to fulfill that. Then choose another and fulfill it. And then keep going! :)
How does this guy have enough time to work with three bands, farm and make wine, run restaurants , own shops, brazilian jiu - jitsu, live a normal life, be successful in everything. This is by far one of the most intelligent people i've ever seen
A lot of people who work with him, that's the secret
@@shitmultiverse1404 Yeah definitely what you said, it's even in The Humbling River! He certainly has as level of focus and discipline that not a lot others have, as well. To be able to organize the people who work with him...
like the other guy said, alot of people help him .
With everything that he does, he doesn't live a normal life. He lives a fulfilling life, and he is, obviously, incredibly disciplined and focused. That is the thing we need to learn for ourselves, discipline and focus. The rest comes as it comes.
Because it takes a team. He knows this.
"Whether I'm relevant or not is irrelevant" - Maynard
@Eerimen Bzej Oh my god, you are embarassing yourself big time here.
@Eerimen Bzej Calling a sideshow freak a sideshow freak is not a great insult. But yeah, you're welcome. You're like those Washington ladies in the 80's, terrified of heavy metal records :D
@Eerimen Bzej Yeah, you totally mentioned "gaslighting" there.
@Eerimen Bzej YOU are the one who is the tool.
@Eerimen Bzej Your right so I'm gonna say what's what. Your a pontificating ignorant buffoon. I swear it's people like you thank make intelligent people say. WHAT THE FUCK. Just sayin
i was expecting more Maynard, but I got less Maynard, which I guess in its own weird way is probably actually More Maynard.
Maynard is a modern day renaissance man no doubt. He most assuredly is maxing out his human potential. Very few people are able to harness their abilities like this man has, he’s wise far beyond his years.
Maynard: "It will spit you out like a..." (delay)
Me: Say wood chipper, say wood chipper.
Maynard: "bad liver transplant."
Maynard keeping it real by still working like the rest if us, difference is, he's his own boss, get those hands dirty, keep that ego in check, and keep that creativity flowing with multiple projects...
Pleroma Oblivion fuck Ted
Pleroma Oblivion you sound bitter what MJK refused to sign a autograph for you?
Leo Perez, I got an autograph from Maynard once. It looks like the McDonald's M. He is an asshole to his fans, it took me a while to understand that he has to be. I saw tool last summer, while the other three where bowing and saying thank you to the fans, he just ran off stage. No wave or anything. But, the whole thing is, the other three don't get as much attention as he does. They had spotlights on them pretty much the whole show. He was never once spotlighted. He has his reasons for being an ass.
Maybe he is a shy guy I don't know because I don't know him personally but, if you feel that way that's your opinion I like tools music really don't care about the people personality! Just saying hope you have yourself a good week sir and I mean it.
Leo Perez, like I said, I understand why he does those things. I'm not trying to dog him or nothing. But, thank you. I truly wish the best for you and yours. Cheers!

Gotta love a man who drives his own forklift.
he had to get someone to figure out how to use it though =\, he doesn't like to read instructions
They are fun to drive. Keeping it real 💯
cherry picker, not forklift
thanks for the clarification

Famous people usually become addicted to drugs because nothing else reaches the high they are used to. I am so happy he found something to keep him going. I love this man.
I'm lazy, so I live vicariously through Maynard
at least you don't need to watch things down...
fretstride2 Dude... That honestly made me feel bad because of how true that is for me. 😔🖤
Stop being lazy
this is so good
Watch him and want more for yourself.
I want to meet him so damn bad. And I live in arizona. Hopefully one day I can shake his hand. He's a major inspiration
They say don’t meet your heroes for a reason. He doesn’t want to meet you and would probably hate you if he did. SorryZ
@@RM-jb2bvwell I don’t think he’ll hate you, but he doesn’t want to be worshipped or admired.
He doesn’t like meeting fans very much
Humbling River seems to be perfect for this video.
Wow, I'm a gardener and have been one forever; The plants on this compound are *insanely* healthy looking. I'm mystified at how they keep all those plants so perfect looking! Especially in such an arid climate!
A fuckload of water
You should take a trip to Jerome. Arizona is arid overall, comparative to the rest of the nation; but many areas are not as arid desert as you may believe.
Yeah I live about 4 hours south from there and it's not as arid as it is barely an hour north. The mountains you see at the beginning are a big reason. My town translates to Mountain View.
He has a water purification system that helps the plants flourish. He is in high desert so it's not as arid as the valleys are. I'm working on my first successful garden and it's all thanks to a Tucson Gardner who's come up with her own seeding and planting timeline and it's amazing!

A million Maynards made this possible. This one just gets to be heard. Very inspiring person for sure.
jason mastrandrea pp
Beautiful way to put it. I totally agree that it was inspiring... especially the part when he describes David Bowie not being able to continue on, but how an endeavor like his wine creation continues to intrigue people into investing their lives toward something new... That made sense to me.... Like you said, a million Maynards made this possible. I think you are one of the "Maynards".
jason mastrandrea deep dawg
jason mastrandrea well said!!
were in new-ish territory here with all the easily accessible possibilities that a person can do with their life. because of that, In the past i've felt uncomfortable after learning about Maynard because i have similar interests and approaches to those interests. Despite that, I was 20 when I first learned of Maynard and was already heading in these multiple directions that I am now, so it's not as though I'm a copy cat. Contemplating the possibility of me ego seeking to identify with "someone above the ground"lol has been a topic to some degree. I'm good with it now for the time being. I do lots of stuff that has nothing to do with Wine or Music or Arizona. I would like to and plan to live in Arizona for more than a few reasons though.
Brilliant. I am a bigger fan of Maynard than I originally thought.
Good to see he found his Arizona Bay

Cringe. Happening. In comments. Relevant.
Maynard is consistent in his ideas and ideals. Everything he says he mirrors in his lyrics. Listen to his podcast with Joe Rogan, the one where he announced Fear Inoculum. The things he says sounds like he was reading the lyrics from the album
Very interesting insight into Maynard’s other endeavors! Seems like a genuinely good guy
really?..a genuinely good guy?..the dude is anti fan...talking about his wine he is genuine..everything else to him is just fodder..dont get me wrong..respect is still there..the man is genius..but still..not a good guy in my option only
frank jasutis he only talks bad about Tool fans, but let's be honest here tool fans are mostly idiots

How so?
Wtf are ya'll talkin about......i ran into maynard at the VORTEX in Atlanta and we talked for 10 to 15 mins,he was in town for a perfect circle show, he's very cool and friendly...don't talk shit about what you don't fuckin know...fuckin douche bags...
On a side note, the thumbnail looks like he is growing hemp.
That's why I clicked on the video, I thought maynard was growing weed.
Not gonna lie I clicked on it thinking it was lol ....turns out I jus found out that Maynard jus a regular farmer dude who writes good music and not some dude who just trips acid alot and writes music
Tomatoes, but it fooled me as well for a second
@@ChickenUSA same actually. I was curious if he had some sort of weed business or something.
I have hemp under my thumbnail too. Thats my side note.
I wouldn't even know what to say. His music has had such an impact on me I can't even put it into words.
He's a rock God
Struggle is the key for sure. It teaches will power and perseverance and proves to person how strong they really are.
Two thoughts... At the beginning of the movie "The Descendants" with George Clooney, there is a quote - "Leave your kids enough money so that they can do something, but not so much that they can do nothing." I find that idea appropriate for this and, the word I think Maynard is looking for is "stewardship." What we leave for those that come after us is more important than what we achieve for ourselves.
GAY !
wysiwygsd great quote, and I agree about stewardship. The individualism of American culture is beautiful in many ways but I think that there are key pieces of good and moral lives that we’ve lost due to this. I think it’s possible to still be unusually individualistic and get some of that back. The way we treat our elders, the lack of focus on what we leave our kids, these things need to improve. I think we can do that without suffocating collectivism.
Well said.
I'm 54 and once you stop you die. I've seen many times throughout my life. Stay busy at what ever you like to do and always keep searching for serenity. Maynard is the epitome of that philosophy. My favorite thing to do is solve problems. There's always a problem and it will never stop. I dont drink but I do indulge in psychedelics from time to time.
Psychedelics have helped me tremendously in the past. Times have changed, they poison stuff now.
@@sarahd8093 I have fent test kits. I crush it all up in a mortise and pedestal. Put a small amount in a vial and add distilled water. Drip the strip in and wait. Typically sellers are users so they wont sell bad stuff.
Very inspirational and humbling!! I love how Maynard is one of few artists still connected with reality.
1:15 mark...........fast forward to "Invincible" in 2019 from the new Fear Inoculum album lyrics: "Warrior struggling
To remain relevant
Warrior struggling

Maynard has such an inspirational vision. Way down to earth.
Sheesh... I regret being piss drunk at the APC show...
I have the same regret but instead of APC it was a Roger Waters concert and I was freaking out on shrooms
What happened if you don't mind me asking? I would think a Roger Waters concert would be the pinnacle of settings to do shrooms in.

The Dog It can be overwhelming. All of the people, lights, heavy music. It can turn into a bad trip quickly.
first of all why get that drunk at a show that costs a shit ton of money to see? secondly if it was waters the wall tour you had a damn good experience
I’m sitting here watching this while eating a cup of ice cream. Thanks to Maynard, I now have this urge to eat healthier and be productive with my creative craft.

He is just a simple workaholic lol, however you must admire him, how he keeps that creativity flowing through what he writes and creates through his bands it’s insane 🛐 I really admire him as a musician and human
I agree with you, and I guess the question is just what is the work that you're addicted to that makes that good or bad. I saw his kids with him (and the whole band) on tour, and his wife runs the shop(s) in Jerome. We know he likes his privacy regarding his family, but it seems he involves them, and it's all jam packed with life lessons. Worse things to be than a workaholic in his case?
My god.....he actually said the T word.
And he mentioned them before APC and Puscifer, I'm shocked
I don't question his drive, he was gonna be successful no matter what, but i can't fucking stand artists who snub the fans of the material that earned him those fans to begin with.
Tigger?
Theyre making a come back!
@@Lance1972 Yeah. Because you like Keenan's album, Keenan has to like you back.
He's so right about how to build on your legacy (no matter who you are). Having something that lives beyond you - that is useful and Godly and good, is the only legacy to build.
@Kenneth Edmiston I feel like some people have children to serve their ego.
Maynard keeps changing, moving and evolving. His music from all three band's represents that flow...
Relevance is important and making things grow and producing for himself allows growth...🙏🏻🤘
Slowlikehoney Too If you are born super smart, you get all the benefits of life, when you are born dumb,God walks on top of you.
Pleroma Oblivion, "what do you know".

His music in Tool? Maynard has NOTHING to do with the music in Tool. Lyrics on the other hand....

You can learn a lot from this guy. Just because he doesnt kiss his fans asses doesnt make him any less valuable as an artist. So yea...go maynard!
Justin LopemanDobson it makes him more valuable
@Eerimen Bzej All behold the hidden hand sign.
@Eerimen Bzej So, you do not like freemasons and you dislike Tool. Thanks for sharing, we'll keep that in mind.
@Eerimen Bzej I see. And Keenan is one of these criminal zealots?
@Eerimen Bzej Ok, I'm not even going to pretend to understand what that was about. But in summary of your comments here, you seem to think that Maynard Keenan is a freemason and a criminal zealot who is likely to aim for a global genocide through making music and writing lyrics. (I guess 'art' in quotation marks is meant to demean his creative output as "not really art").
Sorry to say, but this sounds a lot like something a paranoid schizophrenic might think. And no, I am not calling you one.
He realizes the base, visceral part of man is still as important as the cerebral. You need struggle and pain just as much as pleasure and success to be whole and continue growing.
This guy is deep.
When he mentions "rats eating each other" in the beginning, I can almost guarantee he's referencing the "rat utopia" experiments from the 1970s.
Cliche Guevara thanks I’ll look it up 👍
I thought he said “Wrath”
Sometimes I'm a bit harsh on Maynard, but at the end of the day he remains to be quite an interesting human being indeed.
Console the art given at acception, blinded in mother's arms piece together the past I developed the voice and say father
Does it make him cry when you're, like, really harsh on him?
Kudos my man. Brilliant.
No one cares what you think. Least of all Maynard
Gotta love critics. So aware of their own self worth!
I feel he is talking about Fear Inoculum subject, he was talking about it a year before it came out
“Desperate to be relevant in a world that no longer understands them” was he describing Kanye west?
A very gifted and naturally talented man. Fair play, all those gifts, yet humble, calm, and patient. Gets my vote all day long.
How did rocker become such a Sage? Maynard is one wise man.
Acid
Being Australian, it fills me with pride that Maynard sought advice from Penfolds winery in South Australia about growing and production requirements for his own vineyards in Arizona. Only one sommelier in Melbourne sells his wine.
Maynards music, wine, jujitsu, and many other endeavors have helped him grow a strong love of community which will spread his legacy for many enjoyable years to come. Maynard is a teacher worth subscribing to.. NOT worshipping like a God, that's weird.
Well done, Mate.
Why can’t MJ be our president?!
This man is a fucking genius 🙌
We love you Maynard ❤️
0:00 How I was introduced to Puscifer. One of the greatest experiences
After loving and following his music since the early 90s I'd never imagined he'd be the man he is today. And greatful for his physical work and he's still put out great music
im moving to AZ soon- im a trained chef and i would cut off an arm to work for Maynard- but that might impact my knife skills
What would you offer to him that you would not offer to anyone else? You might have something to offer him. Are you offering it to others now? I'm told that the man chases people off of his property with a painball gun. He wants to live a life not be worshiped. Worshiping him risks what he offers to the world. If he succumbs to fan worship he will be destroyed.
When all is said and done this is one man that can meet his maker and honestly say I wasted no time and I did my best , not many people will be able to make that claim.
Yes,you are right.and so sad everyone has potential to do the same in there lives God gives us a certain time on this Earth to love what you where called to do.and people just waste that.living a full life is a great thing.👍🌟🎉

It would be amazing...IF Farmers were willing...could open up their Homesteads(not your private home area...but the farming erea...etc)where children/teenagers can "intern" during school breaks...in the area/state of Arizona...so this idea can grow....spreading throughout the states. Could YOU imagine IF out of 100 students...at least 20 students who've completed such a Homestead program....go on...to head their own Homesteads(of all sizes).
Great videos MJJ!!
Come to Kansas. I'm sure you could find a farmer that would let you "intern" on his hay truck. 🤣
I did something like that when I was young, idk if people still do it. In some places in Spain, young students did help their families/seek a job during the harvest at the end of summer.

Invincible anyone???? A year in advance? A hint perhaps???????
Yep, i think so.
Caleb Long Thought the same thing. Maybe he’s telling a small fib about not writing lyrics in advance...
I’m so glad that I found Tools music and they have been all I pretty much listen to lately. Now listening to Maynard I understand why their music is so entrancing. I can’t drink alcohol so wine is out of the question but growing vegetables isn’t. It almost makes me want to start or work on a farm. We need more smaller sustainable farms to purify ourselves. I would have thought he was some pretentious douce if I heard this when I was younger probably out of some sort of jealousy now I can appreciate his mind as well as his music. I fall down theses rabbit holes now I’m stuck in the tool Maynard rabbit hole. Let’s see what I can gleen. My other favorite musician rabbit holes have been Iggy Pop, Serj Tankian and Lou Reed. Those we’re my favorites. Now with all the information we can receive it’s actually the one good part of being able to have access to people and ideas the Internet revolution has brought to us. There are tons of negatives as well I’m gonna stop here at the positives.
Mick Isaacs you want to purify yourself read Matthew, Mark, Luke and John bye the end of that you’ll get The Who the why and the how then get dunked and you will be clean for the first time and be amazed at what that feels like. It’s something to have a cleaned soul, unlike anything else.
A serj rabbit hole?
I’m in love with Maynard! Everything about him drives me wild. 🔥🔥🔥🎤
Maynard is an inspiring guy I feel he has helped me push myself in a similar way he pushes himself, since I was about 14 I have revisited all the music the lyrics change meaning with my time or situation, i feel like the music alone has pushed me mentally, physically and spiritually over the last 15 years, thank you Maynard and your fellow musicians.
Cal L. I love your comment. And I usually dislike comments telling the planet , "this is how I feel..." lol.
The word you're searching for though, is, "Timeless" .
When words you've read or remembered seem to change meaning dependent on where you are in life, that is a message that is Timeless. Some words are true regardless of time... Most of humankind's best knowledge is. Congratulations on your personal growth ! Spread the knowledge

You are the sum of everything you have done and said right up to this moment.
Maynard, you sum it up for me. From the first moment someone handed me an old CD and said, "here, you like that angry music, I think you will like this." And it shook my very soul. I looked around to see who has been listening to my private thoughts.
TOOL, the "thinking" man's metal.
Thank you.
Some words that convey how much of a fan I am, while also showing everyone how I "get it".
when i watched some of his older interviews i always saw him as pretentious, but now that he's older, i'm older i see him as a genuinely good working guy, some of the celebs reach this kind of fame, they do drugs, they party, they sell out, they get lazy as people, but maynard here makes wine, has a couple of bands under his belt and has good stories to tell, he's just an interesting guy, he's not some generic celeb of his age that owns 6 ten million mansions and has people doing the most simple tasks for him all day everyday
he knows what to do to not get lost in the fame y'know, he's sane, he wasn't swallowed by this celebrity status, he works, he has his vineyard, he doesn't give a fuck lol
btw. it's crazy how he has exactly the same voice as damian lewis
He wanted to live a meaningful life and connect with nature, community, along with fans through his music. He really is an inspiration, rennaissance man, similar to Joe Rogan.
He does sound like Damian Lewis holy shit

I love when rockstars live their life, do all the crazy shit, become humbled by it, and then they actually have great stuff to teach. So much mainstream music wants you to be an addict and buy buy buy all while having shallow ass lyrics that they didnt even write. This guy is an artist. Most mainstream music today isnt art, its crap entertainment. Its formula. Mjk and florence welch are my favorites in music. Id love to see them sing together.
Exactly, it's an amazing thing to see and the whole thing doesn't just apply to only rockstars. Every day people can choose that path, I know I've chosen it. Life gets pretty dark, and I've only just started to fix my fucked up past, but that's what it's all about. It all comes down to the choices we make, and for some the refusal to see the light. I agree with you about all this new bullshit too, it's all comfort music. People choose the path of least resistance these days, we want everything easy and without suffering. They fail to realize that to grow you must suffer, there's no alternative. At the end of the day we're all still here fighting as warriors, I wish you the best!
Hearing them I was holy shit, reading about him , and learning his life and mine was one n the same, i experienced it in 1971, I think his was n 1976, the connection through music, it's a beautiful thing, being cut from the same cloth knowing your not alone ,

Im just blown away...the past few days I had been wondering if I should continue with all my "unrelated" projects. I love playing music and ive taken up guitar recently to move in a new direction. I have always loved on hands on projects though and science. So recently ive started all the projects I wanted to for so long now that I left a bad relationship that was consuming all my energy. Ive started growing mushrooms, im building a kiln and hoping to make my own pottery and will eventually be growing food and herbs. Im not as rich as this guy, but I relate to everything he says about how his hobbies and projects cross pollinate eachother with fresh inspiration and most of all keep him innovating in new directions. This video is a direct answer to the exact question floating around my mind for days...im blown away, thankful, re-inspired, reassured that im on the right path and not going to lie, pretty envious. The only thing that's been keeping me going so far is the old adage "don't let the length of time a goal takes you, discourage you from pursuing it. The time will pass anyway" and I added to that by saying "well if im 40 and I only just finish what I started, at least I'll be 40 with the accomplishments and not just 40". Quite amazing he is. I believe James Hetfield is similarly minded and they are my two favourite bands, perhaps they resonate something on a deeper level through their musix. Something that speaks of similar character I have within myself. He also often refers to the primal nature and needs of mankind which is what this fight is all about really, the artists, the growers and dissidents. Fighting to restore that centre of human pride and meaning through work, innovation and celebration of life, opposed to a purely utilitarian, working class lifestyle. If you are reading this Keenan, you're a total inspiration.
Them tomatoes where lookin nice . Cause I saw Maynard plant them
I know the tomatoes fit cause I watched maynard plant them-
I'm not sure i've ever heard an American describe their priviledge. Non of that W privilidge nonesense, i mean class and advantages, and possibly businesses certain people should n't be in. There aren't many Nigerian Americans being shot by cops,, what does that,,, whatever you want it to mean, opinion rules.
You know why I quit listening to anything Maynard said? Maynard in a Rolling Stones magazine in the early 2000's: "If I'm so influential, then why are you still sitting in your mom's basement listening to my music?" The h3ll with that guy
What he was saying is get of your a** and do something
He just made sense (and he still makes sense) and it just hurts you
Yeah, it makes sense I need to get off my butt and quit supporting this butthole. He came through my hometown last night and you couldn't pay me enough to go to one of this guy's concerts. When will people realize he's a hateful piece? Ok, ok, maybe I'm being a bit hateful myself right now. Let's just agree to disagree. Dudes achieved more than I ever will. Congrats
How cool would it be to till his garden with Maynard talking about the problems with modern peoples?
Me: "What plants will grow here Maynard?"
Maynard: "They will be plants that will have the energy of Mother Earth and the taste worth millions of dollars. Or as I call them: Tomatoes."
