By the way, I love how open minded you both are! It is so rare to see any "Christians" without judgement and ruling out things as sinful. So refreshing.
Every time Sori says hi I’m Sori my mind says ‘this is a Canadian person saying sorry’ and then I have to say no, this is a person introducing themselves and their name is Sori.
I've heard all these tracks hundreds of times yet I still get goosebumps listening to them. It's even more moving watching other people react to their music.
I also feel a profound sadness for 11 being stuck in time for so many years. I can picture this lost, scared kid frozen in a darkness. Waiting for someone to save him. And old man Maynard finally realizes he has to go back and save 11. But they save each other.
This song is around his mother but its directly about losing his child like imagination and innocence. His mom died at eleven. He lived in Ohio {under a dead Ohio sky]. Jimmy\eleven being his child hood. Saying about getting that back. Also the opening to the song (interrmission) is the mimic of the guitar in the opening
Another great reaction, guys! The thing to remember about Tool, is that the Justin Chancellor's bass is set as the lead guitar, while Adam Jones' guitar is meant to "add flavor," as he puts it. Not always the case, granted, but the more you listen to the band, the more it becomes clear. It's one dynamic of many that sets them so far apart from other bands.
Ooohhhh THAT'S what that is.... Thank you soo much for that, I've known of and listened to tool songs few and far between for years, but getting way more into them through this channel and I thought there was something going on sonically that I couldn't quite put my finger on, I am a Bass player and have an ear for bass anyway, but it felt with tool that Bass was specifically waving for my attention and not merely hoping for it. So thank you again for that information.
I can't fully agree with that. The leads in Tool are Maynard and Danny Carey, which I think is what puts them so far apart from other bands. Adam Jones and Paul D'Amour...later and longer, Justin Chancellor...are the ones who develop the music/melody. Some of the songs are definitely bass forward, but they drive the song, not lead it. Drop D tuning lends itself to the guitars (Adam) and bass (Paul/Justin) trading off in that because you have the 2 bottom strings for both guitar and bass that are already tuned for harmony without even using a fret. But I wasn't never much of a guitar or bass player...and was a barely passable singer and drummer, so that must have something to do with my perspective. ;-)
The song “Momma Sed” by Puscifer is believed to be about Maynard’s mom persuading him to live with his dad in Michigan when he was 11 after his mom had the paralyzation. It is a good song you guys should react to it.
I came across your videos this week and have really enjoyed your discussions in breaking down what you got out of TOOL's music and MJK's lyrics (i haven't watched your reviews of other bands yet...i'll get there!). Both of you bring great perspectives to this and true emotions. LOVE it! Keep going down this TOOL experience...you are already on the path of joining the Army...and i guarantee that it'll be something you will never regret. There is SO much more to go through...enjoy the ride!
The album title is a clever play on Jung's Anima (male's irrationality) & enema (procedural expulsion of fecal material/blockage). Maynard ties a lot of his lyricism to Jung.
This is a great song, and a great discussion. Anyone who experiences a childhood trauma can be emotionally stuck in that moment. This song can speak to anyone who is trying to heal, and rebond with that damaged inner child. The going away part was about Maynard being taken away from his mom to live with other family members, after she fell ill. I think this song, can also be seen as an overall description of his journey through Judith/Wings for Marie/10,000 days. From his childhood trauma to his finally healing and seeing his mom off to her creator. He talks about coming home, the same way he said Judith Marie was going home.
Gotta also add, I completely agree about Tools use of heavy bass riffs. It has ruined me for all other bands, they just sound flat to me. The first time I heard these crazy bass riffs I was hooked
You guys are a wonderful example of what Tool can do to open the channels of inner thought. People often disagree with what they perceive the true meaning of these songs to be. There I believe is where we find the true measure of their art. By taking the time to understand his emotions, we can try and connect with our own. Whatever you think the meaning of the song is, will due. As long as it stimulates you to deal with some of those things that alot of people choose to ignore.
VinAnd Sori That just like my wife and I. Lol We’ll sit and listen to music for hours and discuss it. She listens to my music and helps point out things that could be tweaked in the mix better because ill be in my little creating world for so long I start hearing every detail individually and not as a whole. She’s incredibly supportive! It takes me a day or to to correctly hear a finished track I’ve done as a whole. Lol
Hi Vin and Sori! Just wanted to say, ever since I've subscribed to your channel, you guys have helped me enjoy these songs and appreciate the bands even more! Keep up the great in-depth reviews!!
Super pumped for the album reviews coming up. The content and quality of your character makes up for the lack audio and video quality. You two take this review/reaction genre to a whole new level
There is one more song to add to this "Maynard's mom series." It's from his band Puscifer, and it's called Horizons. I would love to see you listen to it and add it to the quartet.
yall doing this with mjk songs is healing and exposing a lot of subconscious parts of yall. lets have a moment to be amazed that this art is working on yall as you work into it. blessings
You guys analyze Maynards lyrics very well. As a long time and dedicated Tool fan I can really appreciate watching newcomers go on the Tool journey. Keep these videos coming!
He was sexually assaulted when he was 11 after his mother got sick. He's angry because he lost his light when she died she was his safety. He was frozen because not only she passed the but he's having all these other horrible things happening to him as well.
Its fascinating to watch how each of you after a tool song is over appear a bit spent. I listen to tool every day and I so enjoy the journey that each song sends me on. Keep up your great reactions! Can't wait for the full album review!
Man!! Them note choices on "HOME", though...wow! This song is exhilarating! Thoroughly enjoyed the syncopation and Maynards vocal performance (as usual) on this.
Im so glad Ive found your guys' videos, i've been a big tool fan since '93 but haven't listened to them in years and you've reignited my interest in them and the meaning behind the songs, so thanks.
Finally, Jimmy! Brilliant, beautiful song. Love the vocals on this, almost haunting at times. Great breakdown afterwards. Vin the big man showing off that big brain of his lol. Love watching Sori when she's feeling the groove, I swear one day she's gonna float off that chair😂 well played you two...well played indeed👏👏👏
Sounds like Ecclesiastes the part Hemingway snipped from for The Sun Also Rises. Ecclesiastes 1:5-11. I heard a banned preacher recently that says he takes the entire Bible literally and interpreting those verses literally is mind blowing
I was out to the beach with a friend of mine today & this came up on shuffle. You guys came to mind & I wondered when you were going to listen to Jimmy. Got my answer. Thanks for listening!
so glad you did it! I love that Vin's started to notice Tool's genius drumming! Always enjoy how in dept you go with the lyrics. It would be interesting to see what's your interpretation out of TOOL's official music videos as well, considering that the Guitarist directs them. To this day, I'm still confused by some of them xD
This song hits home with me because my mother had cancer when I was a kid and it really hits home with the whole "I had to grow up cause bad shit happened" and I love that you guys keep pushing out TOOL gives me a reason to listen when I'm not in my car! Great job guys!
another SPOT ON review/reaction...You two are naturally Tool fans before you ever even heard them. You aren't afraid of the Deep End. Tool is not for the shallow-minded.
Hi VinAnd Sori, new lady metalhead subscriber here!!! I love Tool, and I love the way you two breakdown the meanings of the songs! This is great, because I've never seen a reaction channel where they really get into the subject matter with such deep discussions! It's so extra special. I saw Tool live in Baton Rouge, La. back in 2002 during their Lateralus tour, and it was mind blowing! Absolutely the best concert I've ever seen, and I've seen many! Meshuggah opened for them. I'm really glad I stumbled upon your channel, because you have something really awesome here! Keep rocking, and peace to you both!
Well thanks for joining!!! At this point we don’t have a lot of lady metalheads! So WELCOME!! I would LOVE see tool live! I bet it was awesome!!! Glad u are enjoying our content! Peace back to u -Sori🤟🏻
I know you guys probably don't want to React to Marilyn Manson. But the one song I really like that isn't antichristian is called Coma White. Actually a very cool and melodic song. So maybe one day you'll check it out 👍
I had known that Maynard wrote about when he was 11 years old and her mom got sick ,so he had to move to Ohio to live with his dad(Im not so sure with who) and the only thing he wanted in that time was to reunite with his mom . In any case your reviews are amazing guys.
Maynard grew up in Ohio with his very religious mother and strict step father. I believe he felt stifled and so in his teens he began to rebel/act out and ended up moving to rural Michigan to live with his father. The change of scenery did him good. I think he had a lot resentment towards his step father and ultimately at his mother.
True, he left his mother in Ohio and moved in with father in MI. His mother had the aneurism when he was 11 and left paralyzed. Thanks for the excellent review on one of my very favorite songs. Try “Pushit”.
I think he went to live with his dad when he was 11 after his mom had her stroke . it sounds like he felt guilty leaving her , and telling his 11 year old self that thing worked out for the best and not to worry .
So gotta say as a huge tool fan I absolutely love these reaction videos. It's cool to see his music resonate with people as it has on me for so many years. I will say that as I've grown and matured so has my understanding for tool. What was once just an outlet for my anger now Carrie's depth and beauty witch has expanded further my love for Maynard and everything this dude does
Mr Keenan touches my heart with almost every song. No matter, in which band he was. No matter, which kind of music he did. This helped me through many troubles in my life. (But I think, I am not the only one ...) Thank you, Mr Keenan !!!
Opiate will be tough for them, Maynard is pissed to no end on that album. I felt very similar when I lost my mom recently. Correction, not similar, exactly the same. It wasn’t the right way to look at things but it’s hard going through those kind of things, gotta find someone or something to blame.
Been a Tool fan for a while but never really dived into this song before this video. Thanks! We’re all waiting for Jambi now !!!!! Also... Hurt - Rapture.
Love u guys... a new subscriber here just for your take on Tool songs... Maynard is amazing... his songs to his mom are the most emotional and loving out of all his repertoire
‘Jimmy’ is when Judith was forever changed. ‘Judith’ is Maynard questioning his mother‘s faith in her God; a God that would leave her ‘broken down and paralyzed’. ‘Wings’ 1 and 2 are after she’s gone/her eulogy.
What I think will happen eventually is you will hear the entire catalog of tool from opiate to the new album. Then you will be able to pick out the songs from undertow where Maynard is starting to express his thoughts about his life. Using this medium he begins his journey to start his healing process if this is deliberate only he knows. I see undertow as his full attack on theology not wanting to open up about his mother yet. There are really no mentions of the relationship, then aenima has the beginning of him opening up about the relationship. We journey with him as he accepts the loss and moves onto healing. The songs get more complex and deep with years between albums this is Maynard therapy screaming into a microphone and growing.
Michael Foley I’m dying for an opiate review especially from a Christian standpoint BUT I agree just like people, music & bands evolve over time. I wish they would listen to things as a while & in order to see it all over time.
Great reaction/critique. One of my favorite Tool songs of all time. You guys seriously need to react to this entire album at some point. It's brilliant. Also "Ænima" is pronounced "Ah-nema".
I just found you guys, and don’t want to stop listening to this long enough to dig, but H. is an emotionally moving song about Maynard’s feelings before the birth of his son.
It’s seems like “heading home” is an inevitable journey he will make, through hardship, emotions, pain, guilt, acceptance, etc, .... moves on to more songs that describe so. to eventually come to terms. You won’t die happy if you don’t get some kind of closure.
This is the first one this song is about Maynard not understanding what has happened to his mother. Judith is his response to the church that she attended turning her back on her after her condition they told her that she must have done something to deserve what happened to her which is also where his distrust of the church comes from. He goes over this in his autobiography a perfect union of contrary things.
The point you made at 23:30 about whats worse, the shooter, the person videoing or the person watching the video, reminded me a lot of the song Vicarious from Tool. Its all about that and recognizing the part inside yourself that wants to see horrible things.
Absolutely! I love what you guys do, so many channels just half listen to the music and headbang it out but don't really dig into what the song is saying. Love you two!
Vin is like the body Sori is like the soul No insult or negative connotation. Just based on their facial and cognitive reactions, I love it. Perfect male and female chemistry. The ying and yang coming together Love y'alls channel.
I bought a copy of Aenima in 97 mainly because the cover artwork caught my attention. I've been hooked ever since. Sori, if you fall in love with Tool it will ruin you for other music. There's so much depth to their music that even after 20+ years I will listen to a Tool tune and it can have a different meaning/feel to it. Enjoy...
I've had this record for 20 years and had no idea that's what this song is about. I've always wondered what the meaning of this song was, so sad and powerful. Thanks guys!
Other Tool songs that have decidedly religious themes are Opiate (on the album of the same name), Flood and Eulogy... and would make for some interesting reaction videos from Vin and Sori.
Yeah, MJK's birth name is James Herbert Keenan. He changed his name to Maynard James Keenan later in his life, after he left the military, probably around the time he went to LA and started making music. So yeah, I'm sure "Jimmy" was what he was known as when he was a child (11 years old), and surely what his mom called him.
Platform Strange ... Um... I guess you're just trying to say he never went to a court and changed his name legally, and that's a matter of record, and may be true. But by the smallest stretch of the imagination, he still changed his name to Maynard. Everyone calls him Maynard. His friends call him Maynard. The masses call him Maynard. Hell, even his band mates call him Maynard. No one calls him James, and no one knows him as James Herbert. Even most fans don't know Maynard is not his given name. His birth name is mere trivia now. So by all means, he changed his name to Maynard.
Eric Stodolnik he will always introduce himself as James. But i see ya point. Unlike sir Elton John , who changed from Reginald Dwight by deed poll. Celebrities are weird, meatloaf has meatloaf on his credit card. But sir Michael Caine never changed his name and has always been (sir) Maurice micklewhite. Humans are odd things. "My name is Maurice micklewhite, not a lot of people know that "
Michael Caine actually officially changed his name to his stage name back in 2016. Apparently because he was sick of the hassle he was getting over his name at airports.
Im with Vin on this. My take on this song and the lining up to Judith was that MJK was making multiple evolutionary steps emotionally, and so although he was ready to start dealing with these old emotions, he wasn't yet ready to do that (until pain allows). Great breakdown again.
Totally. Too much to type here but it's so refreshing to hear interpretations and opinions that actually build in giving people the grace to emote, make art, move people, etc. I, personally, am a religious person, but being involved in the arts, I have a ton of friends who are different religions, agnostic, or atheist. Regardless of it all, all points of view being with recognizing each other as imperfect humans and that we're brothers and sisters. So, to hear how you two approach breaking down music in an intelligent and open way without sacrificing your own views, is exactly the counterbalance RUclips needs. Looking forward to more videos!
Reading "perfect union of contrary things" biography of Maynard James Keenan. Never heard this song before, but it seems wild because I know what he's talking about having just read about him growing up in Michigan. Last night I just realized we go camping in the Manistee National Forests alot and that's right next to Maynard's home town.
Just found you guys. I enjoy how you guys keep your comments to a minimum during the song, they are true reactions and not stopping the song to hear yourself speak. Then all of the ideas and thoughts that we can see forming from your facial expressions during the song come out in a thorough analysis afterwards. I enjoy the analysis as much as the reactions. You have found a great format, that sets you apart from the pack. Keep up the good work. Edit: He does hold the note live ruclips.net/video/IC52jONidaM/видео.html
Jeez this Sori got the main thing figured out just like that? It took me years. Amazing. And yeah your overall discussions are really good, I am sad I figured it all out already and have nno incentive to watch, but , good work
I saw Tool in 1996 and they performed this song and MJK nailed the vocals. He had a rap before they played this about breaking the cycles of abuse, which colored how I interpreted the lyrics. I believe he's said he was a victim of abuse as a child. Regardless, great job with the reaction!
Always heard this song was about one of Tools Roadies/Tech and his fiance'. She wanted him home after being on the road for so long with the band. 1 and 1. Eleven will be together when they reunite.
By the way, I love how open minded you both are! It is so rare to see any "Christians" without judgement and ruling out things as sinful. So refreshing.
Thanks !!
Every time Sori says hi I’m Sori my mind says ‘this is a Canadian person saying sorry’ and then I have to say no, this is a person introducing themselves and their name is Sori.

Not always the case, granted, but the more you listen to the band, the more it becomes clear. It's one dynamic of many that sets them so far apart from other bands.
Lithium Black I don't think those are fixed roles, in almost every song they change their roles. Both are lead and rhythm in every song
Ooohhhh THAT'S what that is....

Whoa really! That’s so sad! -Sori✌🏻
Tru
True, he left his mother in Ohio and moved in with father in MI. His mother had the aneurism when he was 11 and left paralyzed. Thanks for the excellent review on one of my very favorite songs. Try “Pushit”.
alpo6668 definitely do pushit
Reaction Eulogy Tool
Noted! -Sori🤘🏻
Yes !!! that's the first TOOL song I ever heard, and first Tool song I learned on guitar haha
can't wait!
Guys...EULOGY! PLEASE!
I think he went to live with his dad when he was 11 after his mom had her stroke . it sounds like he felt guilty leaving her , and telling his 11 year old self that thing worked out for the best and not to worry .
@@VinAndSori devil horns??????? i hope you're sorry
11 and old soul an intuitive old soul full of light returning to the source.
(But I think, I am not the only one ...)
Thank you, Mr Keenan !!!
Love the music in this one. Waiting on that Opiate review =)
I like sorri's explanation. Or a combo of both of yours
Yes! I have a feeling that their take on Opiate won’t be so nice lol love them anyway!
Opiate will be tough for them, Maynard is pissed to no end on that album. I felt very similar when I lost my mom recently. Correction, not similar, exactly the same. It wasn’t the right way to look at things but it’s hard going through those kind of things, gotta find someone or something to blame.
He hadn't lost his mother by then but he was definitely more PUNK then. They didn't discover their TOOL formula yet.
Been a Tool fan for a while but never really dived into this song before this video. Thanks! We’re all waiting for Jambi now !!!!!
Also... Hurt - Rapture.
Soon my friend!! -Sori🤘🏻
Yes it’s coming !!!
Tool live is the best way to experience them unfortunately Maynard hides in the damn dark the whole time now haha!
I wonder y? -Sori✌🏻
He wants the concert goers to focus on the music, visuals and not the frontman.
toolmanick yeah but when he does perfect circle and puscifer he's front and center.
Hating me is conforming true yes...but it's not Tool. Get what I'm saying. Different bands and different music.
toolmanick yeah I know :)
This breakdown is the opitome of why I love you guys.
More music coming every day!!! -Sori✌🏻
I just found you guys, and don’t want to stop listening to this long enough to dig, but H. is an emotionally moving song about Maynard’s feelings before the birth of his son.
I love your reactions. It's not an obsession to relate and enjoy music!
Truuuuu
THE most underrated Tool song. Nice breakdown.
My absolute favorite tool song ever!!
Wow I really love the discussion at the end! Incredible how much you guys pick up on.
The climax of this song gets me every fucking time. Awesome song, definately one of my favs by Tool !
Love your videos! Thank you for your Tool reactions, can’t wait for more!
More for sure! -Sori✌🏻
It’s seems like “heading home” is an inevitable journey he will make, through hardship, emotions, pain, guilt, acceptance, etc, .... moves on to more songs that describe so. to eventually come to terms. You won’t die happy if you don’t get some kind of closure.
You can really feel the anger coming up in him, that he cries out in Judith.
I appreciate your conversations after listening to the music. You’ve earned a sub 👍
That pro picc is 11/10, plus the reference of #BanishedWords . Scary!
I love your reviews, they're so spot on.
Great reaction, thanks for doing this one. I share vin's depiction of the lyrics.
Awesome !
The point you made at 23:30 about whats worse, the shooter, the person videoing or the person watching the video, reminded me a lot of the song Vicarious from Tool. Its all about that and recognizing the part inside yourself that wants to see horrible things.
That one will be a great breakdown I’m sure!!! -Sori🤟🏻
Absolutely! I love what you guys do, so many channels just half listen to the music and headbang it out but don't really dig into what the song is saying. Love you two!
Love you right back!!! Appreciate that!
Vin is like the body
Sori is like the soul
No insult or negative connotation. Just based on their facial and cognitive reactions, I love it. Perfect male and female chemistry. The ying and yang coming together
Love y'alls channel.
Enjoy...
She’s ruined ! ....fa sho!!! Smh 🤦🏾♂️
I've had this record for 20 years and had no idea that's what this song is about. I've always wondered what the meaning of this song was, so sad and powerful. Thanks guys!
Good vid dudes. You still need to do passive by a perfect circle to complete the judith marie quartet. Angry maynard! Awesomeness.
Agree!!!
yo mo Absolutely, as well as Horizons by Puscifer.
The key ingredient of childhood is Ignorance. Ignorance, carries his ancient soul back to the light.
Other Tool songs that have decidedly religious themes are Opiate (on the album of the same name), Flood and Eulogy... and would make for some interesting reaction videos from Vin and Sori.
More will be coming for sure!! -Sori🤟🏻
Right in two
We did it!!! -Sori

Eulogy is more about idol worship. He specifically calls out L. Ron Hubberd
Interesting! -Sori🤘🏻
Eric Stodolnik he never changed his name, Maynard was and is only a stage name.
You guys have totally sold me. So happy to be a subscriber. Keep up the great work!
My man...THANK YOU!
Thank you !!
Awesome! Yes that’s what we’re about as well !
Dude tell vin Maynard could scream his ass off when he was younger . Seriously . He holds those screams like a beast
Edit: He does hold the note live
ruclips.net/video/IC52jONidaM/видео.html
Hectic led me here! Great channel guys, keep up the good work!
ahhhh you should've included the intermission leading into this, it really makes the song
Right it’s like @carnival music
Deep as the Abyss..... Almost don't wanna look too deeply into it afraid what might be lookin back ...... This is part of a mans soul
Always been one of my favorites from them.
Good one no doubt !
Jeez this Sori got the main thing figured out just like that? It took me years. Amazing. And yeah your overall discussions are really good, I am sad I figured it all out already and have nno incentive to watch, but , good work
this bass line in the last verse always grabs me
True story !!
Emptyself - The Postulate
I saw Tool in 1996 and they performed this song and MJK nailed the vocals. He had a rap before they played this about breaking the cycles of abuse, which colored how I interpreted the lyrics. I believe he's said he was a victim of abuse as a child. Regardless, great job with the reaction!
"Makes a perfect circle" and then the drumming... favorite part. Lol
b2ick wall mine too hahaha
Always heard this song was about one of Tools Roadies/Tech and his fiance'. She wanted him home after being on the road for so long with the band. 1 and 1. Eleven will be together when they reunite.
Christians analyzing TOOL. INTERESTING.
Every video I've seen is them arguing. Love is strong
He does hold the note that long live. He is an incredible singer.
