@@saturn_qwertydawn5429 yep. It was originally much shorter but they extended it for Fear Inoculum.
MJK never gets enough respect for letting the music breathe. He is arguably the best metal/rock/whateverlabel singer ever but, he never tries to take over a song. Eddie Veder is awesome for his style but if you listen he never shuts up, he goes on and on and on and on never letting the music stand in front. Much respect Maynard!
Love Eddie but I get what your sayin' especially in live shows.
Yea Pearl Jam is just the Eddie Vedder Show while Tool includes all the band members with Maynard,Justin,Adam, and Danny all being great at what they do
@David Hannigan what people don't get about tool is the brilliance of the song construction. Yes, they will go all in on a riff for multiple measures but there is a purpose to it. It's sets the stage for the music to become atmospheric when Maynard sings, so the vocals and the message stand out. I understand that some people have that "ADD" quality to them and need to jump to that next thing immediately. Tool just isn't the band for them.
This is even more important, in that Justin, Adam, and Danny write the songs completely free of a vocal part. Once they are complete, Maynard lays over a melody. As a separate process, it would be even easier to overshadow.

That song is a must

YES! One of the craziest and most unique tool songs!
Nah. definitely not a must
Lost Keys /Faaip de Oiad/ Rosetta Stoned
I like to interpret this song in a two-fold fashion: 1) Maynard once again railing against hypocritical leaders, especially spiritual/religious ones, and 2) the crowd's desire to elevate and then consume their own idols.

"I swallowed his facade because I'm so eager to identify.. with someone above the ground..."
I think that line is key to what you're saying. I also think he has a special hatred for evangelists.
Bill Hicks, Kurt Cobain, the Stans, finishing off with the media that makes money from celebrity “culture” - this songs inspirations, in that precise order. Think MJK might have been dissing Courtney with the “heart” line...
Who is the bigger fool? The fool who follows the fool?, or the the fool who tries to convince the fool he is a fool
Whoever requested this!!!.... thank you!!!! Their faces were epic!!!!
Most of this album is dedicated to Bill Hicks from my understanding. He was a friend of the band and it was released not long after his passing, for instance the song aenima was clearly based on his stand up bit called Arizona Bay. Eulogy could very well be based on L Ron hubberd but as Bill Hicks loved to pick on religion in many of his bits, I think this song is dedicated to him
Your "Scientology friends" won't hear this because they're not allowed to use the internet....lmao

Hahaha! So true
Amazing song, probably my favourite song from the album
So good.

Dear Vin and Sori, please leave autogenerating english subtitles turned on in your videos, so non-english speakers would have an opportunity to understand your speech better with the help of text. I mean your speech is clear, but it's quite hard to construct long fluent sentences in head aurally, so the text helps to keep in mind the visual parts of them better. Greetings from Russia. P.S. You should know you are making the right thing for the world. You are True Wolves of sOberia!
I just wanted to say, I love you guys! Even though I'm a pagan (not of the abrahamic religions). More specifically, I cherish the Greek Gods. I respect you as decent/good natured human beings. And you have amazing taste in music! Coexist my brothers and sisters. :)
Got to see this at one of the Tool music clinics. Always thought it was all synth, but the "plinking" in the start is Adam on the guitar. Breathtaking to see it performed live at the clinic and then live the next day at a festival.
Their songs are open for interpretation, that's one of the awesome things about Tool. There is no denying this is one kick ass song!
This song got me through my Father's Passing , he talked a Lot but I Love his stories, I MISS HIM SO fn MUCH ! After alot of digging and prying I believe this song was written about his step father who was a pastor ... Kinda along the lines of "Judith" but alot darker because apparently his step father was a strict parental figure. Alot of pent up aggression for sure here

Nobody can build a song up like Tool
It's about Bill Hicks.. Much of the song relates to Hicks stand up routine.
This.
I'm surprised that your comment is the only one that seems to think that... however, I've known that since my early days with this band.
It was always about Bill Hicks.
I gotta tell you, I've seen every comedy special of Bill Hicks's and I don't see the similarities. I don't see how this could be about Hicks at all. On the contrary, I've heard L. Ron Hubbard's name brought up which would make sense. Especially since they've mentioned L. Ron Hubbard in 2 other songs.
Seems a little angry to be about Hicks...someone they clearly respect and agree with. "Would you die for me? Don't you fuckin' lie!" They would never talk to the late, great Bill Hicks this way. L. Ron makes much more sense to me...or maybe even the big J.C.?
@@jacket5456 my thoughts exactly.
A song and video where I instantly hit the LIKE button before I hear a word come from Vin or Sori! I...LOVE! this song!!!
Thank you, man. Saying it's L Ron Hubbard makes this sensible finally! And I'll tell you that Maynard has struggled with his faith for years and is a very spiritual person.
But the point you made about him abstracting all the general leaders... Man. I've been a Tool geek for almost two decades and you gave me new food for thought.
I dig it.
Apparently the lyrics starting at 6:36 go something like this
You could be the one who saves me from my own existence
Warn while some child might chill, nine-one-two
I'm too smart when you're invisible by the bone symbol on you
So he bashes his skull through the window while looking out to the sea
Like torment of my ego
And we're amused by this
No idea what this means lol
I always have interpreted it to being about Bill Hicks. He was always on a stage when performing “above a crowd” he yelled a lot when he was doing his stand up. He always had something to say about what was going on in the world today. But I’m probably completely wrong. I’m the only person I’ve ever talked to that has said they interpret it that way.
You're right. I have no idea how people think this is about L.Ron. "Ranting and pointing his finger, at everything but his heart." That's Hicks all over. He even had an album called "Rant in E-Minor."
Third eye was about bill hicks not this song
Pretty sure the song was about his father - who was an evangelist.
@@dwainespradling9233 the members of tool have said that their songs are about whatever ant them to be. That’s why the song applies to so many people
I always looked at the cross reference as being a play off of the Christ figure trope of literature.
And the martyr as being more akin to the modern vernacular, of a person who dies for a cause or ideal, and their death serves as a catalyst that inspires others to action.
"Get off your cross" is a figure of speech. I wouldn't expect Maynard to mean it literally.
You could be the one to save me from my own existence... most sarcastic song ever...
Finally my favorite Tool song. The flow of the lyrics towards the end is amazing
From Dec 1996:
"Who is "Eulogy" about? My guesses are Jesus Christ, Paul D'Amour (Tool's ex-bassist), or Kurt Cobain.
"There are no songs on the album about Paul. People might think that, but it's not the case."
Is it about Kurt Cobain? I wouldn't think you'd be a fan of his.
"I appreciate what he did. I'm not really happy with his professional widow. The song's about tendencies, NOT about a specific individual. It's about tendencies of people wanting to stand on a soap box and sacrifice themselves in some way. We don't need that process anymore. You're on your own now."
@@rushunt2131 Not sure a direct quote can be a rumor.
@@heelerfromky5569 Where is this quote from? I'm not accusing, just curious.
It's actually about Tony Danza.
Its a Christian metaphor for L. Ron Hubbard
@Sebastian while the whole album is ostensibly about Bill hicks, some of the songs still have their own meaning
I tried going through the comments to see if this was revealed before, but I am too lazy. I’m sure it was already revealed, but if not… that unique sound at the beginning was Maynard yelling into a megaphone different vocal tones as he switched in on and off.
So happy to finally see them live..amazing
This is one of my favorite TOOL songs
As with most Tool's songs, there is a lot of symbolism which can have different meanings for each person depending on where they are coming from when they listen to the lyrics. Given Maynard's religious background from his upbringing, you can find religious imagery within a number of his songs. To me Eulogy is mainly about thinking for one's self, making your own decisions and not being swayed from those personal beliefs and decisions by the words of a charismatic individual.
Meanings of the lyrics aside, this is just a kick arse song to listen and jam to.
You guys are still doing a great job! I remember we had a little convo on one of your first videos when I said I thought your channel was going to take off. I hope you get to 100K soon. Milestone!!
Maynard and the band have stated in multiple interviews that this song is about L Ron Hubbard. Though he does use Jesus as an analogy. But beside all that, it shows how great Tool songs are. That their songs can be about more than one thing, or person.
They never said it, there is no source for this claim
I think if Maynard said that it would be like all the other times he was trolling. The guy also said “so a meteor just flew into Jupiter, Jupiter disintegrated and all you Sagittarius are gonna fade of the face of this earth” I think this song is about killing your ego but what do I know? If you have a source for the Scientology thing I would love to see it brother
Gojira - l'enfant sauvage Hellfest 2013
Yes It's Me Again!! Thank You for at least covering this song! Been requesting this since you first started covering Tool! Maybe I missed something But my take on it is that Hubbard thought he was either the 2nd coming Or Better than Jesus!! When Maynard said get off your cross, I took it to mean that he cannot compare himself to the Christ and that he was full of himself!! I had the displeasure of speaking to the Scientology followers as I was trying to expand my mind and Spirit. What I found was a Cult unlike Reverend Moon that tracks its followers out of mistrust and responds in the most horrendous ways!! Just my experience with them!! Thank God I told them where to go and challenged them. Heard recently that the Nation of Islam has joined forces with them which really puzzles me!! Why would they team up?? Don't believe me, look it up!! But Again, glad you covered the song!!
some of the lyrics from the instrumental part:
"You could be the one who saves me from my own existence
Warn while some child might chill, nine-one-two
I'm too smart when you're invisible by the bone symbol on you
So he bashes his skull through the window while looking out to the sea
Like torment of my ego
And we're amused by this"
Eulogy's "Spiritual" adaptation is a conversation between Maynard and his ego. His quest for enlightenment was always met with his ego saying "When it was time, I'll die for your enlightenment." Obviously the ego only cares about self-preservation; so he is tearing himself away from his ego and disassociating with it - correctly so.
Yeah, I think this Hubbard thing is a hysteria spread by Tool fans for whatever reason. And if the song was made just to bash a specific messiah, it would resonate more about David Koresh than Hubbard, especially 'cause the band started to write this song right after the Waco siege.
As you pointed out, Eulogy may be talking more about the dissipation of the ego. Maynard also uses the idea of crucifying his own ego in other Tool songs like Part of Me, Bottom and Reflection. AEnima's clearly a very jungian inspired album, a "psychospiritual" bridge to Lateralus, so we have to understand towards those concepts too.
sorry... I'm going to tear into you for this one... buuuuuut.....lol... dude... how utterly wrong can you get!!??!!?? It is in no way about... well... what you described... ya'know, not every fucking Tool song is about Maynard's "QUEST" for enlightenment"... oh wait... actually NONE of them are... particularly because Maynard is not (nor is anyone else in the band) *"enlightened"*...he'd be the first one to say as much... (ESPECIALLY in a room full of fucking Tool fans)... and he'd be saying it the loudest (with a beautiful voice as well, lol!)... (not to mention he'd probably laugh at the entire concept and think it was a fucking joke)... LOFNL!!! No, but seriously... His songs aren't about reaching elightenment, like some Tool fan's might desperately proclaim and believe... if anything, the closest thing to that sentiment would be that many Tool songs are about introspection on a particular subject or aspect of Maynard's self, or life, or an experience... or a sort of personal meditation on such archetypal motifs as saaayyy... a grudge, or a communication breakdown with a loved one, or our need to vicariously experience violence and suffering, or the birth of his son, or a traumatic episode in his childhood, or his anger, hatred, and frustration with Los Angeles, or a psychedelic trip, or an unhealthy relationship with a spouse, or the death of his mother, or addiction, or closely-conscious inspection of his shadow-self, or his deep, deep (yes, pun intended, lol!) appreciation for anal sex because it's four degrees warmer than the vagina, or perhaps coming to a realization about how beautiful, and fleeting, and precious, and boundless, and ephemeral, and delicate, and exciting this existance is as this being, this conciousness, alive in this temporary corporeal form, and how we should be aware of that fact and thankful for it...
And yes, obviously I am talking about Parabol/Parabola when I said that... which in my opinion, is probably the very closest Tool has ever gotten to echoing the idea, or sentiment in your comment... But it's still not about being enlightened or even a quest for enlightenment... its just what I said it was... a simple acknowledgment of realizing how precious and "holy" our existence in this otherwise temporary material shell, and how our true self, all which we should hold as truly important is the eternal self, the spark of consciousness that exists within that shell... even that's not enlightenment... that's a simple truth to anyone who is even a little bit "woke" when it comes to these matters. I'm fully aware of that fact and concept, and not only agree with it conceptually but have felt it as this deeply *real* and intangible, but palpable... *something*... feeling... whatever you wanna call it... but in no way is that enlightenment, and in no way am I enlightened.
I'd have to say the Tool songs that come the very closest to being about what you're thinking about as "enlightenment" would have to be, of course, Parabol/Parabola as stated above, "Lateralus", "Disposition/Reflection/Triad" (but more specifically "Reflection"), "46&2", and I guess you could say "Third Eye"... And I'd say none of these are actually about Maynard *being enlightened*... they're about deep introspection and deep meditation into one's self and psyche... but that's all... "Parabol/Parabola" I've already touched on... 2 of those songs are about very close, serious, and meditation and introspection with the specific motive and intention to confront the "shadow-self", or the "dark-side" of one's psyche and persona, in order to pull out kernels of truth about one's self, and in turn grow from what you've learned from within... which is "46&2", and "Reflection" (and honestly, to a lesser extent, Third Eye, because some aspects of that song are about confronting the shadow-self... and specifically in the context of a very intense psychedelic experience)... Now Lateralus, I'd say is like a tie with "Parabol/Parabola" for being closest to this concept of enlightenment... But even "Lateralus" isn't about enlightenment... and CERTAINLY not about Maynard himself being enlightened... it's about raising your level of consciousness, and being more "woke" in general... and basically finding the desire to learn more about your consciousness and your self and your psyche, and a connection to spirituality of some sort... a connection with some sort of mysticism or esoteric knowledge or occult knowledge... or whatever it is that grabs hold of the individual to dig deeper into that connection with the spiritual and elevate you above the prospect of just being another mindless robot, just another vapid, empty, soulless individual with no depth to their spirit and their consciousness and their awareness... Its just about starting out at square one and finding whatever it is that piques your interest into the great beyond and following that thread to wherever it takes you and being open to whatever path it takes you on, as long as it raises your level of consciousness or your appreciation for what I mentioned in talking about "Parabol/Parabola"... (And honestly, I personally think that Lateralus is about all that, but in connection and conjunction with the psychedelic experience... but that could just be my personal interpretation of it in context of my own experience)... but it still isn't about Maynard becoming "enlightened"... You may actually think "that's totally becoming enlightened, what you described there"... but no... no it isn't... not at all... becoming more conscious in general is a HUGE fucking LEAP from achieving enlightenment... the average person will NEVER reach enlightenment... if it is even TRULY attainable by someone in the modern world, connected to this modern infrastructure and modern society, and not holed up in some monastery, meditating with a bunch of monks 18 hours a day, every day for their whole life... I seriously doubt it is possible for someone like you, or me, or Maynard at all... Keep in mind, that actual "enlightenment" is becoming FULLY aware... it's reaching NIRVANA... it's not opening your third eye... it's not having an intense and introspective trip... it's not truly deep introspection... its... fucking... ENLIGHTENMENT... and in my opinion its a word that's thrown around WAY too lightly...
And I'm not sure if that's what you're doing... throwing that word around too lightly, or truly think that Maynard is actually an enlightened individual.
By the way... all that aside, even whether Maynard is enlightened or not, this song STILL is nowhere NEAR being about a conversation between Maynard and his ego... and is in no way projecting the characterization of this voice on the pulpit, this martyr on the cross, this man who'd die for you, as being some sort of personification of some aspect of his self... ego... or any other sense... It is actually about true false prophets who actually try to lead people as some sort of Messiah, and is a scathing indictment of that type of person and how they pretty much are just dirt...
But either way... Maynard isn't on a quest for enlightenment... he's not enlightened... and his music isn't about how fucking awesome and enlightened he is. Its deep, it's introspective, it's meditative, it's psychological... but it's not about how enlightened he is.
Honestly, the funny thing is, in a way... YOU are MAKING this song about Maynard the way you're talking about him being enlightened... because in a way he's has unwittingly and unintentionally become this sort of prophet figure for legions of Tool fans who literally think he's this holy being, sort of messiah or prophet, merely because he writes beautiful, deep, and conscious lyrics that stand so far apart from his contemporaries and peers... That there's a whole giant subset of his fans who actually believe he's this messiah-like figure... I'm sure it annoyed the FUCK out of him forever, but I'd imagine he now finds it pretty hilarious... but in the end, by becoming this unwitting prophet, people who think he's this enlightened being have shoehorned him into the role of the subject of this song... lofnl... I find that hilarious... and honestly, I think he'd find that deliciously ironic and a fucking hoot to boot! lofnl!
P.S. (I hope you were using enlightened and enlightenment as hyperbole, and don't actually think that Maynard is this god-walking-among-men, holier-than-thou, enlightened being walking with us mere mortals... lol... please tell me I blew your comment completely out of proportion and that you don't actually think that way... and even if that's the case, I still think you're WAAAYYY off the mark about the subject in this song being some sort of personificaltion about a facet of his self. :P)

@@Qliphirot The L. Ron Hubbard interpretation was given by Danny Carey. Maynard said that is not about one particular figure, but more about the idea of a man standing up and preaching lying to everyone. It's not about Jesus Christ, it's more about all those preachers (including L. Ron Hubbard) in the US and especially in California (remember that the Ænima album deals a lot with California and L.A. in the 90s).

The relationship you two have where you can disagree lovingly is amazing.
I get a chuckle every time a song gets even remotely and Sori's eyebrows jump. Every time.
I really loved your commentary on this! I've seen [more than I care to admit] lots of these First Reaction videos. You two have great chemistry and I really appreciate how you broke it down at the end. Subscribed! (From a lonnnng time Tool fan). :)
The street speaker thought was brilliant. It makes sense among a lot of good observations U two made. Looking forward to watch more of u guys.
They've usually said it's about Hubbard, but the Christ metaphor is obvious.
EXACTLY.
I think it's still more about cult leaders. It's not addressed to Jesus, just referencing him. It's saying "So you're the new savior? That means you'd sacrifice yourself like Jesus, right? You're not just a scam artist, RIGHT?"
First time I heard it, I thought it was about Jeebus. I always thought "To ascend you must die" was "Judas said you must die"
Its about christ, its about people putting themselves on a cross like christ, without being willing to sacrifice themselves like he did. False prophets, people who try and be the next christ.
I thought it was comedian Bill Hicks
I think sometimes people get too specific with finding a meaning. Though there may be a specific inspiration, this song is simply about martyrdom.
There's also some language that suggests the military, a life that Maynard has experienced. ("Don't you step out of line!")
My absolute favorite tool jam... and hellyeah on the kiddo discipline!! Firm and to the point!!!
Love this song. Singing along with my headphones on. Kids came down to say quit yelling. Lol
The song is about Bill Hicks. The booklet that comes with the album has a picture of him and Maynard that says "another dead hero." The song was written shortly after Hicks' death. The song includes a lot of dark humor on Maynard's end.
So much of Maynard's lyrics are VERY personal to him, his life, and experiences. It's not pleasant, but religion is just like anything else in life....flawed. The source can be misinterpreted, the representatives can be horrible, those yelling the loudest may be trying to drown out their own faults or doubts. *False promises and empty hopes can come crashing back into reality with a force that shatters lives.* Those responsible may deserve the disrespect they get. Or maybe they aren't getting enough light shown on them, and need a bit more to expose those dark corners.
See, Tool gets me to think these kinds of thoughts. Really proud of that one line.
Wow. I hadn't heard this in a while. Great song.
You guys have a new subscriber, I love your guys reactions especially the aenima video, that was classic
Best Tool song
Relligous people about evolution and science: "Well this stuff requires faith too, why is it so different from our beliefs?"
Vin in this video about Maynard: "Well this guy speaks to alot of people too, how can he criticize RLH or Jesus for doing it????"
This kind of argument is beyond stupid and it always will be, good grief.
@t r they're both beyond stupid, that's the point
Well in Greek there is the word "MArtiras/Μάρτυρας" that means the one who witness an event (and also in another loose meaning the one who tells something secret) but there is also "MartIrio/Μαρτύριο" (i am using capitals in both words to show where the tone is because in Greek we have intonation symbol in words) that means torment/torture/suffering (kinda synonym to vasanistirio that means torture.. for example to make someone speak etc). So Martyr could either mean the one who witness or the one who is suffering (if it comes from Martyrdom). So if it means the later one then Christ was indeed a Martyr since he suffered for our sins etc...
This song is something special, the message, the build up, the creativity and the anger and soul in his voice, especially that first “SO LONG” god tool is an experience
This whole song to me, sounds like somebody having all these grand ideas about themselves and killing them off because “to ascend you (ego) must die”
But I truthfully can’t pretend like I know what goes on in Maynard’s head

I love listening to you guys. You guys are so intelligent.
When you learn that Maynard was raised in catholicism, his anger is clear

My grandma... who was my last grandparent, died around the time this song came out.... she was a Catholic that became a Buddhist ... and she died afraid. K Zed Hell yeah let’em have it. The lyrics I mean. LOL…
@MeTALL Or maybe whoever made the lyric video didn't put them in?
@MeTALL first listen to the song you wont hear it and most lyric websites does not have that line. I tried to find it back in the day as i know i hear some vocals there but most dont have em. Which sucks!
While this song is filled with religious overtones, it is basically a song about *anyone* who stands on a soapbox and promises "whatever". These are usually very arrogant people who try to maintain a viewpoint and their ego will not allow them to accept alternate explanations. This is easily seen with faith based systems, which is why I think Maynard choose this theme.
Vin, you are a great mind with unique viewpoints, but sometimes you "state" things in a way that feels like you think you are more intelligent then others, or that you speak the ultimate truth, sometimes even to your own viewers. Siri on the other hand, is way more open to alternate explanations and ideas, while still maintaining her own opinions.
This song to me, and it will mean something different to everyone, which is the brilliance of Maynard's writing, doesn't have anything to do with any specific person or Religion. And that's saying something considering I am an atheist and it would easily for me to paint this song about Christ.
This man missed the lyrics: you could be the one who saved me from my own existence
TrustNoOne 622 Of course they did. Then people would have to admit that this song is psychological. Just like the rest of the album.
MeTALL lol They are evangelicals.
MeTALL When you’re indoctrinated into a cult, it tends to limit your critical thinking.
The 'friend' he has who 'makes' the subtitled lyrics either fucked up or deliberately omitted them so that Vin and Sori can not be subjected to those... Pretty sketchy either way to be quite honest....

No, Maynard, nor any member of Tool has any affiliation with Scientology.
Before I start the Reaction part, back in high school my best friend and I applied the song to Jim Jones and cults in general, (well, he came up with the Jim Jones theory and I suggested it could apply to most cults.)
We were spending a lot of time in bookstores, hanging out mostly in True Crime sections, and also, his dad was a pastor, so we had a lot of that stuff floating around in our heads at the time.
The Scientology/L. Ron Hubbard theory seems to be tied directly to the tertiary theme of Los Angeles as a hellscape, and the band's/Maynard's general disgust of the city as a symbol & as a reality. A theory that leads me to believe that the song is more about celebrity & fame, a cult of celebrity, if you will.
BTW, if you guys listen to podcasts and are interested in the topics, Last Podcast On The Left has great episodes on Scientology & Columbine.
Did Jesus exist?
In academia, we usually don't care.
What matters is that Jesus/Christ exists in the text, in art, and especially in the hearts and minds of the artists who depicted, followers of, and enemies of Christianity.
Jimmy was a good one, " remember I will always love you as long as you don't throw it all away, it will be no other way" man can carry some vocals on a suspended note, he's well known for it.
That is the song Pushit and the actual lyrics are "Just remember I will always love you Even as I tear your fucking throat away But it will end no other way"
Trapped with corona, my dad is a preacher. He called me a stupid little shit today for expressing an opinion that things arent that bad. Im considering playing this at his funeral. Im just kidding, kind of, but watching your videos has made me feel like I can deal with tomorrow, thanks guys.
The widely accepted theory is L. Ron Hubbard, but it could refer to any demagogue or populist leader. I think it could refer to Trump as of late
Maynard did dabble in Scientology for a minute......., it wasn’t for him......who would have guessed that?...lol
Maynard had a tendency to fuck with the media back then. He would give different answers to the same questions from interview to interview. He chose to remain an enigma
One style is the leader, the other style is the follower. The follower started to question why he would die for the leader.
The Church of Scientology is the 3rd largest real estate holder in the city of Los Angeles which is fucking bonkers considering some estimates say the church has a world wide membership of only 40,000 members
That was an awkward conversation
Vin, I just went to the site, Songfacts. . It stated band in interviews that song is about founder of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard as on the contrary believing it was about Jesus. Maynard uses Jesus an analogy in the song.
Crowded House, Dont Dream Its Over!! You need to do it . Very important song that musicians like Mic Fleetwood and Dave Mustaine have spoke about and love. Crowded House Dont Dream Its Over!!
it's always been my understanding that this song is regarding L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of psychotic Scientology.
That outro though, im pretty sure its one of the best outros ever created
Megadeth "HOOK IN MOUTH" or is my request just out there in the internet universe never to be heard or am I just being ignored??!!
the lyrics of the song is a tribute to bill hicks. But MJK purposefully builds lyrics to leave it open to interpretation so you can take and get what you want or see from them. However, MJK has said in interviews it was about Bill
Ca I just say, I love how I depth you go. Your tool reactions are the best there are on this website.
Suggestion: please I beg you do Black Sabbath more. They're music is utterly transcendent. Try out Symptom of the Universe.
I'd love to be there when Maynard sits down with Jesus.
I’ve always interpreted this song to be about those people in your life who are all talk. Taking stands, orating to who ever listens. No life experience to back it up. Some may Call them ‘bullshitters’. Maynard is basically calling them out and telling them to put their money where their mouth is. One opinion.
So your word to get the kids quiet is red haha so you have the safe word in bdsm porn that they use. Hilarious!
Just a little detail, but I think you’d be interested to know that the repeating note in the beginning is the final note on a piano. Almost like a eulogy is the final note of a person’s life.
Maynard actually makes these noises live with a megaphone.
The intro is the drummer Danny Carey using mid eastern/ African and tribal style percussion techniques.
It’s a special kind of smile I make when I listen to you break down Tool
I believe the sound in the beginning is just a drum stick hitting a long neck beer bottle
Love you too! Love the conversation after the song reaction!
martyr: a person who voluntarily suffers death as the penalty of witnessing to and refusing to renounce a religion.
Jesus seems to fit the definition
Yes. If you just go back and watch Bill Hicks' standup...he was loud but dismissive of his own role as a comedian. He was just very smart, purposeful, but minimalized himself. ESPECIALLY about the cancer that took his life.
Have to add listening to your commentaries, Faith and Worry are Definite Antithesis!
Easier said than done though due to the fact that we're still imperfect human beings!
I believe the song was not written about Scientology, he wrote this about Jesus.
it is my understanding based on lots of checking/watching videos...the "horn/beep" part is from a megaphone and maynard making some additional sounds!
Multiple meanings to this song and at the end of the day, Tool's lyrics are what you make of it because of the fact that they are very generic and covers a broad topic usually with an example. I feel that this song is about worshiping people and idolizing them and LRH is taken as an example to show the same thing. This song kinda made me realize that I need to adopt a persons characteristic if it really appeals to me instead of worshiping them because after all, humans are not perfect, myself included. Basically changed the way I viewed influential figures.
Apparently you don't know the difference between the words "generic" and "vague". Also anyone who uses the phrase "at the end of the day" is a f'n moron.
@@brothersnippy1373 well I am pretty sure that you have done extensive research and arrived at the conclusion that anyone who uses the phrase "at the end of the day" is a f'n moron. Also, I clearly know the difference between vague and generic and I am also f'n sure that Tool never writes songs that are vague so say what you will cuz at the end of the day I don't give a flyin f**k .
The beginning sound is Adam picking his guitar strings between the bridge of his Les Paul and the string stop behind it.
There’s so many references to Bible verses throughout this track. Fantastic
I think people connect this song to L. Ron because of the reference to him in ænima the title song of the album, being a song about LA and referred to the Religious leader of LA L. Ron
