I shoot on the c70 from time to time and it has become one of my favorite cameras to use for all the reasons you listed. Such a feature packed camera for a great price!
Canon C70 is the only camera with good internal NDs, 10 bit all-i and raw, great dynamic range and noise performance, and great autofocus. Sony uses heavy noise reduction to get their dynamic range numbers and you can really tell. Also the evnd on the fx6 only goes to 6 stops, has a bit of color shift, and doesn't work properly with a polarizer. Really waiting on another compact camera to do all of this. Ronin 4D does it but that's a really big camera and the AF isn't as consistent. Maybe the FX3 II or S1H II. In the mean time, C70 is where it's at and I'll keep dreaming.
I think the fx6 wins, electric nd filter, incredible low light performance and excellent dynamic range, all in full frame. The C70 requires a speedbuster To have the same depth of field, that must be purchased separately and does not allow external recording.
I agree! Yeah the EVND is rad on the fx6 but 6 stops sometimes isn't enough and the lack of CPL support is annoying. I think you could use a CPL if you go to the stepped NDs I think Yeah the FX3 II should be the winner- hoping for 6k in that sensor For now, the c70 is one of the best if you want a compact workhorse. It's definitely a mix of the fx3, fx6 and komodo The FX6 is cool, but it always felt more of an event / wedding / corporate camera to me
I've been looking at the C70 since it came out. I started shooting with the Panasonic GH5. I went to the BMPCC4K. And lately I'm shooting with the Sony FX30. All great choices. But, Canon always has some of the best skin tones. And having internal ND's really makes run n gun filmmaking so much easier. Plus, the 12-bit internal RAW is a great feature alone. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I have a C70 and love it for all those reasons except for form factor. It's still uncomfortable after a few years of shooting with it, but it does fit nicely into my bag.
love it! yeah the body style is odd- would've loved a side handle like the c200 / c300 / c500 Definitely is super easy to travel with though! I love running it with just a top handle, lens and mic - makes for such a compact setup
Great watch, thanks. Been seriously toying with the idea of getting a second C70 so I don't have to pair mine with my R7 for weddings... It's insane just how far ahead this camera is. The R7 is indiscernible from R5 footage, and the C70 blows it out of the water.
Awesome summary, Thomas! Loved shooting on mine for the past 2 years. Do you ever run any other ISO below 800? When using any lens 2.8 or above, I've found it a little fiddly to change exposure with just the internal ND & iris whilst maintaining a shallow DOF. I've recently started rocking the ISO a little more but wondered how much dynamic range might get lost beyond that native 800. Rock and roll, dude!

I think I might be able to match the colors more easily between the Black Magic and the Canon versus the Black Magic and the FX3. But, I'm concerned that the C70 won't do well enough in low light , indoor, run and gun situations. What are you thoughts?

In RAW you do that bit later in the edit so it can be CLOG, 2 or 3 at the switch of a button. I've even had very good results in 'normal' CLOG2 mode, and having DaVinci CST that to SLOG, ARRI etc and grading that as if it were the other log formats and it holds up super well!
I feel that! For weddings / events / bts / corporate that fx6 is really really solid though. but for commercial stuff I definitely would grab the c70 or better yet- a komodo x lol
Biggest let down of the c70 is ironically other cameras to go with it. Without clog2 on their mirrorless line up means no affordable second angle, no backup camera.
I agree 100000% Sony has their whole line flushed out from grandma’s camera to full high end commercial / movie work. For canon, there’s not much happening which is and has been weird. The R5C for me, was a let down especially as it showed up almost a year after the FX3 Canon needs to make some moves fast, they’re going to lose people to RED / Sony
@@thomas.kovacik I do love the size of the FX3! I recently was able to use the FX6 for the first time, but I'm not a huge fan of the ergonomics of it. I have shot on the C70 a couple of times, and was always blown away by the image from it.
Yep! Technically speaking, but I’m mostly referencing the full cine line like the older c100, c200, c300 and c500. The c70 takes over the c100 / c200 spot, we need a RF c300 and RF c500 and whatever else is past that haha. Sony already had that full spectrum dialed and even moreso with burano
Watch Gerald Undone’s review of the C70… And he’s the best camera reviewer on the Internet… He thinks the picture quality is just OK, can’t compare to the A7S3… But the only thing that really matters is if you’re happy.
Super 35, EF -only focal reducer, no so swell autofocus (compared to other cams), RF mount is proprietarily cutoff from external lens manufacturers, and then there's Canon itself, one of the most integrity lacking companies around (routine nerf-hammering and feature removals)... No thanks... :) But, thank you for the review and the nice video!
Appreciate it! Yeah the RF support is a bummer, wish we could have a native sigma 24-70 RF, would be sick! Canon does some weird things too- not sure why they changed their strategy to update the c70 so much haha One of my favorite things though is that they gave us the same sensor that's found in the previously $10k c300mk3, that was a great move for them and for us haha

i would still choose this over an fx6 any day anytime
\
I feel that! For weddings / events / bts / corporate that fx6 is really really solid though. but for commercial stuff I definitely would grab the c70 or better yet- a komodo x lol
@@thomas.kovacik dream setup is still a c70 and an R5c I’d be unstoppable
@dynamicrangeproductions I feel! Wish that r5c had clog2 in camera tho haha
@@thomas.kovacik Yh that’s the only down side the battery is easily fixed with a vmount or external power bank
The C70 is the closest camera that provides an image extremely close to an Arri Alexa especially for the price.
It's so solid! I felt the same about the red komodo x files. The c70 has a huge leg up on price though
I had one, I sold it, the lack of a viewfinder was too annoying.
yeah some people really need a viewfinder, I'm not in that camp haha
wish sony had an option like this, fx6 gets way too big
I agree, it’s tough to fit a FX6 into a backpack especially when you need the top handle for audio
One of the main reasons why I got a c70 haha
@@thomas.kovacik exactly, hope they listen and fix it :)
Biggest let down of the c70 is ironically other cameras to go with it. Without clog2 on their mirrorless line up means no affordable second angle, no backup camera.
I agree 100000%
Sony has their whole line flushed out from grandma’s camera to full high end commercial / movie work.
For canon, there’s not much happening which is and has been weird. The R5C for me, was a let down especially as it showed up almost a year after the FX3
Canon needs to make some moves fast, they’re going to lose people to RED / Sony
THis is true. You can however just shoot CLOG3 for both which has worked well for me.
@@npmeilleur yeah! i’ve done that before too, works pretty well
I'm literally thinking of getting 2 c70s... One for an a cam, another for b cam.
@@Screamusthe best b cam is another a cam!
Screw it. I’m selling my FX3 and getting this…. Maybe. 😅
Hahah in a perfect world having both is key! I use my FX3 for so much
@@thomas.kovacik I do love the size of the FX3! I recently was able to use the FX6 for the first time, but I'm not a huge fan of the ergonomics of it. I have shot on the C70 a couple of times, and was always blown away by the image from it.
RF c as well
@@thomas.kovacik 🫶🏾💯
I love this camera but it does have a bit of noise in my footage vs the Komodo. Anyone else have this issue??
Yess
Only cinema camera with a rf mount? Don’t you leave out my r5c bro lol
Hahah I knowwww
Watch Gerald Undone’s review of the C70…
And he’s the best camera reviewer on the Internet… He thinks the picture quality is just OK, can’t compare to the A7S3…
But the only thing that really matters is if you’re happy.
I think I’ve seen that video!
Haha they’re close, I think the c70 edges it out
But that said, I sold the c70 for the Komodo x and kept my FX3.
But, thank you for the review and the nice video!
But how about the image quality?
Appreciate it!
Yeah the RF support is a bummer, wish we could have a native sigma 24-70 RF, would be sick!
Canon does some weird things too- not sure why they changed their strategy to update the c70 so much haha
One of my favorite things though is that they gave us the same sensor that's found in the previously $10k c300mk3, that was a great move for them and for us haha
Snorkel Bob Cares
He really does- for you and I
One reason for not buy it : RED ^^ more simple :) I prefer RED Pictures :)
True! Love the red image
Canon / red are super close too, love both
@@thomas.kovacik Now for sure yes :)
I prefer the DSMC2 series ( Gemini Helium Dragon Raven etc ) they something more on these picture ( dragon sensor ) Komodo is little more " classic " pic style /
@vincentbrunet7929 oh yeah! I never used those but I’ve noticed how those look- the Gemini is def my fav from afar haha
Love the KX too but yeah those DSMC2 cameras were special
@@thomas.kovacik I have the Gemini :) somes videos will came soon with :) DSMC2 are very special for me too it's why i don't buy DSMC 3 Komodo or other... :)
Thanks for Answer :)
Man this is really fanboy talk. here
Not at all, I’m a big fan of it for the price / performance ratio. It’s an incredible camera for tons of people out there
Buuuut, I’m selling it on Thursday and I already placed an order for it’s replacement
