- After about 6 months of owning / operating the RED Komodo X, I finally have some context into my decision. This camera has been incredible
Also, let me know if you guys want a dedicated video where I talk about the other cameras I researched!

Fantastic video Thomas! I love seeing how much you love this camera. Amazing looking footage too!
Appreciate it Josh! I’m so glad I went with it, it’s so perfect for what I need / want
Please don't get any ideas, Josh! We need you on team canon!
cant wait to watch this and imagine buying a red komodo
Haha I hope this doesn’t encourage anyone to make bad decisions
But I feel this when watching Alexa mini videos haha
@@thomas.kovacik nah its a very solid breakdown, thank you. its super nice to get a birds eye view of everything that goes into a decision like this. excited to see what canon has coming but as a c70 owner i share a lot of the same complaints and would love a more robust workhorse cinema cam
@@thomas.kovacik Yeah and after the mini you'll start looking into even more expensive stuff... Had a Komodo, got a mini and now i'm getting a little Arri Alura 18-80 until I can actually buy a great set of primes...
@nathanael_marguereta_dop oh noooo haha
It never ends
I went to the Red website because of this video.
Your channel is my favorite way to see gear I have no business on buying. You make that sensor sing man!
haha I love it! appreciate that Luis!
So nice dude. Really cool to see footage of the work you’ve done with it. Also a side note… loving the grade in this video.
Thanks man! Should have some more on the way soon for the fujinon video haha
Thank you! I was actually doubting my grade bc I’ve been trying different techniques so I’m stoked to hear that
Crazy you got me watching your entire video. Also, I don’t want this camera but now you have me wanting this camera lol. You always have the speed booster option that’ll work great with the Contax and nowadays with the Nisi ND, we have clean VND. Keep getting after it, great work, and have fun!
haha amazing
yeah dude it's a soooolid one! I saw you had the raptor for a bit, I could see this being a nice middle ground compared to the raptor for the stuff you do
So true! Loooots of options thankfully, thanks man! Hope you've been well
well now I need one
Why have 1 LF when you can have 6 KX’s
but for real, this camera is so sick
How has the boot up time/black shading been in the more "run & gun" scenarios ? Thinking about making the switch from FX3 for more doc-style outdoor work
hasn't been an issue! I black shade at the start of every day, then again at lunch (just bc) but most scenarios the light doesn't come on saying you need to black shade.
Bootup time is forsure slower- the c70 was like 1-2 seconds, fx3 is the same. I just turn it on and leave it going until I know we are moving locations or not shooting or whatever
The fx3 is really solid and versatile, I would try to add something to go alongside it. There's been so many times where I reach for the fx3 for the speed, but man the KX IQ, workflow and ergonomics are reaaaally nice
It's crazy minimal with that dsmc3 monitor and it feels great when running around solo haha
@@thomas.kovacik For the blackshading, make sure you let the camera get up to working temperature (just turn it on, let it be for 5 mins and then do the shading, even longer if it's super cold). Otherwise you'll blackshade for a colder temperature then what the camera will be
Nice review, I like what you do. For Sony global shutter you were thinking of the A9M3. Thanks for your testimony
Great video. Been a Komodo OG user a couple of years and love it so much for the same reasons you mentioned. My next camera will definitely be a Red either KX or I'm thinking VRaptor for the super high frame rates. But hard to justify because the Komodo is amazing as is. That look that colour.
Thank you very much, for sharing your experiences
Always!
you hit all the points man! very good video
Thank you!
This video was super helpful. I think I'm pulling the trigger!
amazing!
Love your videos man. You make me want to create more videos
So stoked to hear that, appreciate you sharing
I miss creating videos, def need to get back into being consistent again
That's my goal. Work with the Blackmagic I have and then upgrade to either the RED ecosystem or the Sony Burano. Also thank you for detailing your upgrade path/growth journey. That's something that people need to understand and build out for themselves as they advance on their journeys.
Great video man!!! Side tangent looking at this videos post the Sigma lenses stuff lol I hope Red comes out with a firmware fix soon
Just another option for people to consider who are in your position... The super 35 V raptor. I was also looking at the Komodo X. You may be able to find a good deal on a used one if you're patient and lucky. You may be able to get one for maybe 20% more than a KX.
You know what.. That’s a great idea!
I could see that being a great addition to a KX or a reaaaallly solid A cam
The KX was a great first move for me for the size but man that raptor still is pretty compact, brb checking facebook marketplace haha
I'm in that same position! waiting for good deals on used kx and posibly raptor
So jelous about the 'less cables' haha..
great vid bro
haha thanks man, that dsmc3 monitor is the key ingredient here haha
The image and ctrl you get with that footage in post can save a lot from things missed on pre-production. Not that you shouldn't get it right in front of camera to begin with, but not like every job is the same. R3D is LEGIT!
I agree! it's great to have it
Really cool video! Always enjoy to listen to you haha. Now I doubt buying the c70 or the fx3...maybe save some money and buy the komodo x haha. Let´s see...
thanks! haha yeah you really can't go wrong
With that new c400 now, things are kinda shaken up a bit haha
Holding out till the bottom falls out on this camera. Komodo is fine for now. I know this will be $5k body in the near future after monitoring RED's trends. Good choice on camera and great video!
Not a bad idea! It’s gonna be a great camera for years
Yeah that trend is worrisome, another reason why I didn’t want to invest into a raptor haha
Thanks!
Watched this twice, great video. Had mine for about a month now, so it's nice seeing all of my initial thoughts confirmed in one concise video.
Thank ya! Such an incredible little camera
Blackmagic user but watched this whole video and loved it. Good stuff man.
rad! appreciate it
What camera(s) are you primarily working with?
@@thomas.kovacik Ursa G2 + P6K Pro the last few years but picked up the 6K full frame and absolutely love it. Just has a look that’s hard to explain. But it’s for sure working for me.
@@AdamSzarmack that 6K full frame image is incredible, it has a 3D-pop quality to it (also Komodo X has it)
Wow this video is already pumping pretty well! I would have waited about 2 days to hear what Cannon's next camera is. Although, while I say that I just bought the C70 and I already had the Canon R5C, So I didn't take my own advice.
Haha yeah, when I bought it on 12/31/23 there was no guarantee of an announcement from canon, so they were out of the equation haha
I don’t like waiting on promises
@@thomas.kovacik I totally feel you and unlike you I don't have any paid work. Mostly doing passion projects and working full-time.
can you share the footage of the shot with the sunset shooting directly into the sun at 11:19 please? I have been recently breaking my BRAW in exactly the same scenario - would love to see if it performs better 🙏 also when it comes to supporting lenses and if you want to know if you need to support it or not I have asked multiple manufacturers and they have all came back with the same line: "if your lens exceeds the weight of the camera body - it should be supported or the lens needs to sit on the tripod and the camera can just be mounted "hanging" on the lens" (so the mount is usually rated to handle the weight of the camera body and not much more. Only because you lock it with a different adapter still dont change the original mount strength in terms of how much stress it can handle, hope that makes sense
congrats! im getting one as well comign from black magic 6k
thanks! heck yeah, you'll love it!
Well put together video Thomas! I'm taking a more serious look at the KX. Question, what is your ND workflow or workaround when shooting outdoors with the KX?
Thank you! I have 3, 6 and 8 stop IRNDs
I keep them close by in a bag or pouch. If I’m having to swap often I’ll throw one in a pocket to make swapping really fast
So far it’s been smooth!
Its worth noting CFexpress like Cfast (SATA 2/3) is just its using the new NVMe 1x/4x interface, so with most camaras you can just use adapters and run 4-8TB NVMe SSDs at the same cost of these native cards, some brands are just outright using M.2 SSDs on caddy sleds witch makes far more sence easy to get, easy to replace, easy to conformal coat etc.
That’s an option too! I hate running external media- did that on the p6k. But if you’re doing event / studio / stuff that doesn’t mind a fragile setup then that’s forsure a great move
@@thomas.kovacik I've never had an issue with it because it's very easy to rig and protect media cabling lines, massive amount of upfront savings when you consider how much has to be invested into LTO tape for maintaining a local archive per project, you just dump a drive into an ingestion and just pop a new one in and off to go.
Clean setup.
Thanks! Been reaaaally in love with the minimal kit
Didn't Nikon buy RED? I wonder if down the road that will change clients minds or the popularity concept.
Yep! Potentially, I guess time will tell
The acquisition makes me hesitant to invest any more money (raptor) until we see how things play out
But for now the KX is perfect for me
sony footage looks really good how did you grade that footage?
The form factor is great on the Red KX. Seems like you enjoy shooting more on the X than the C70. I own the R5C, and I'm thinking of upgrading to a BlackMagic Pyxsix 6K FF or the C400.
It really is! I’m loving it
Nice! That c400 looks killer. Seems like a great upgrade from the c70
Is this finally a RED that is suited to run and gun documentary production? I use the Panasonic S5 with zoom lenses to shoot in all kinds of lighting situations from very bright to very dark, and generally I shoot handheld except for interviews.
seems like it! it's definitely really nice for solo operation- as you can see how minimal it can get
Thanks for the video, very informative and honest. I think that for your type of work the just released Canon C400 would be the ideal camera. The Komodo X would still produce better images (more filmic) than the c400 (more video look), but the functionality of the C400 seems unbeatable for run & gun, corporate, comercial, broadcasting. Personally, and in terms of image quality, I would have invested on the coming Blackmagic Ursa Cine 12K ($15K) with its new FF sensor and impresive capabilities, but I understand that this brand is not requested enough in your local area and network, and maybe it's not suited for the type of work you do. However, I think this is going to change in the next couple of years. Blackmagic is taking the high-end cinema camera market very seriously and their camera hardware and color science is getting better and better.
Thanks! Yeah the c400 seems to fix a lot of issues with the c70
The Blackmagic is rad! But wayyyy to big for me haha, but not opposed to them overall
Yeah so the ProRes can be a little confusing. ProRes in Red’s can only shoot 4K max. But if you set your sensor to 6k 17:9, you’ll use the entire size of your sensor. So “technically” it says 6k, but it’s only 4k. If you set your sensor to 4K, it’ll just crop in.
Need to see more footage of that Fuji lens with kx sensor
That’s gonna be the next video most likely!
Is the top monitor good enough to pull focus on?
I have the Raptor myself and I would LOVE to be able to use smaller native screen than the 7 inch one from RED
It some scenarios! Yeah having it on top def makes it more versatile / useful
It’s reaaaally small but for quick stuff it’s actually fine! It’s fun running it with the wing grip + lens for a really compact setup
I have been debating the Red system for so long but the internal ND's is too so useful for my purposes (constantly switching lenses for shooting sports). Hopefully the new Canon cinema that's getting announced tomorrow is like... somewhat close to this camera.
Side note - thanks for creating those CLog2-to-Rec709 luts, use them every single time.
Yeah I can get that! Hopefully it’s close to the KX- I feel the KX offers such a solid value for a solid majority of filmmakers. It’s in a sweet spot forsure and it would be rad to see canon / Sony offer something similar
Appreciate it! Glad you’re enjoying them
I would personally like my wedding to be photographed by two Alexa 65s with Hawk Anamorphics for a 2.40:1, ProRes 6K deliverable and I definetly need an FX6 for my Christmas home vids, probably taken with Blazar Remuses just to ease it out in the post a bit
nice move, i did the same from bmpcc6k to gemini
Thanks! Wow that’s a great move too
Always wanted the Gemini, but couldn’t afford it back in it’s prime haha
@@thomas.kovacik the Same bro! I rented it a lot past years until past week a good offer came to me, less than 10ke for a full kit, pristine condition, so I jumped. Did you saw this -15% offer from red during December 23 ? The K-x is very interesting. It can be an awesome camera to pair with a Gemini, Monstro or raptor. She fix all the defaults of the og komodo. What’s your fav go-to lense do you use for the Kx?
literally working hard to get this
Let’s see if canon can step up their game this June 5
that's the hope! I heard there's 1-2 new rf cinema cameras. I wonder what they'll add to it and if I would've picked those over the KX if they were out 6 months ago. Prob not but I'm hoping they're solid for all the canon homies haha
why not the c300mkiii you can keep the c70 as a b cam on a gimbal but rigging the c300 a little for handheld
Mostly size + being locked into EF glass
If canon had an RF version I prob would’ve ended up with one but the KX fits my style really well- plus it fits in a backpack easily haha
can you do a video where you show off your lenses? would be dope!
Yes! I’ve moved some things around but I’m editing my fujinon first impressions right now!
Would you mind sharing a few raw clips so we can play with the color and dynamic range?
Yes! I’ll get a link going this week
@@thomas.kovacikman that would be super helpful, thanks so much!
Where did you find the requested productions or how did you or where did you expose yourself to be seen by those looking for Sony or Red based cameras?
Just a byproduct of the network I’ve made. Lots of friends shoot Sony and when they are looking to fill roles it makes sense to match
Would love to know how you handle focus on shoots when you don't have a person involved, especially coming from a C70 where the autofocus was something you could potentially lean on?
Definitely! I’ve been primarily manual focusing for the last 4-6 years, so I’ve had lots of practice haha
I definitely want to make a video about how to get better / more confident with it
Medium sized focus throws make it nice as a solo operator (80ish-200degrees)
have you used it along side the fx3 for any weddings? If so, how did it handle?
Not yet! But I’m sure it’ll be fine
Fx3 is my main camera for weddings though, it just works so well hah. Kx is a bit slower / heavier and goes through more power
I didn’t see audio how do you do that? Great images
I showed a couple sneaky clips, I have this bright tangerine cheese plate + the red xlr unit!
I had the mid49 plate before but this is quicker to move setups around
Nice one, Fujinon MK18-55mm T2.9 is that E version modded to EF? thx
E modded to RF!
It’s a mirrorless lens so you gotta stay with the short flange, would be cool to have it in EF or PL though
@@thomas.kovacik def PL yes wonder why they don’t have the option available? Thank you
Are you gonna switch now canon is gonna announce the new full frame Cinema camera..
Gonna be nice to get a Full frame cinema camera with build in ND filters and RF mount to use with the new RF 24-105 F2.8 video lens..
Just hope its gonna have SDI + full HDMI... an upgrade to the C500 mark 2 meets C70.. gonna be great.
no plans to make any moves with the KX, if sony comes out with a fx3 mkii I'll prob make a move with my fx3 but I'm verrrry happy with the KX
Hopefully those specs are true! 6k FF is a must. Canon is overdue for some new rf cinema cameras haha
You never go wrong with a RED Komodo X.. its basicly a mini Raptor 🔥✌️fantastic camera.
I got the R5C, an R3 and two C70 cameras.. but it hurts my brain that Canon releases the RF 24-105 F2.8 but doesent have any full frame RF cameras with build in NDs 😅
Great vid thanks. He did you find moving from internal nd to external?
Thanks! It’s not too bad, similar workflow to my fx3 of course
I’d love some sort of rear lens nd solution but I’m still researching.
The trade off with R3D / ergonomics / workflow are worth the loss of internal nd for me
@@thomas.kovacik Thanks man. Cvp have shown some pretty great rear rotary nd systems.
Was changing to R3D a huge difference in image quality. I like the c70 but it has its frustrations. Seems like a worthy upgrade
Whats the lens in the thumbnail?
Olympus zuiko 28 f2!
I think from a modularity, name recognition and simplicity stand point, I completely under the switch. Wonder how you’re ND workflow has been with the X. I’m sure you’re doing fine with screw-on/4x5.65 filters but are there new discoveries you’ve made?
it's been solid! it's identical to the fx3 in a way so it's been a seamless move. of course internal nd is fastest but it hasn't been bad or overbearing. If anything, the IQ bump is worth the loss of internal nd haha
I'm using the tokina irnd 3, 6, and 8 stop so far and they've been great! I'm considering adding a kippertie revolva or breakthrough x4 for my ef lenses, but we'll see
@@thomas.kovacik That's great! What ND's do you use if you don't mind me asking?
Yeah! Check out the description at the top- I have links to all 3! IRND 0.9, 1.8 and 2.4
Tokina pro IRND 82mm
May I ask, I have myself a lot of Contax Zeiss lenses. But which bigger 35-70?? 3.4 ?? lens do you show here lots of times? as well on the C70 and this Red? Is there somewhere a list of lenses? /zeiss contax you have and use? Or can you just write it here down? Thanks and talk some more slower. ;-) Greetings from the Netherlands. 🙂 Onno Nugteren Photography and Film Ah I think it is a Contax Zeiss 35-70 f/3.4 right?
I showed quite a bit, lots of 35-70, 50 1.4, 35 2.8 and more
I had the 18 f4, 25 2.8, 35 2.8, 50 1.4, 85 1.4, 35-70, 80-200, 100 macro
I re-filmed this video 5 times to make it as short as possible, soooo yeah apologies for speaking fast I guess
@@thomas.kovacik you must realize that many of your viewers are no native's in English. Do you at all speak any foreign language? :-) Greetings again.
Would you have bought the C400 if it was available?
Depends, prob not but I can see myself owning one with the KX
Nice content. My opinion is we still need smaller bodies from cinema cameras. Technology already allows that. One thing annoys me the most is super heavy and big equipments.
Thanks! Yeah there’s def a time and place for the various sizes. I love the size of the KX / fx3 as a solo operator who does run n gun
Some cameras are a bit too big for my style but work great for others
the phone vibrating constantly really threw me off and I kept checking my phone haha
Hahah, I have no clue how I didn’t hear it when talking
Gonna make sure it’s on silent next time haha
No issues great vid again, watching this to see to do upgrade from c70 to c400 or go a little higher
@donovanmortell8380 hahathanks! Yeah that’s a great question, I’m actually going to record a video talking about the c400.. it looks really solid
So no footage to download?
Red has some, haven’t had time to get my stuff up yet
What kind of mount adapter do you use for the contax zeiss?
Simmod EF hard conversion!
@@thomas.kovacik thanks man one more question does it produce a more pleasing image than a native EF L prime lens?
How has no image stabilization been when shooting handheld?
It’s been mellow! I shot with the c70 without IBIS, and sometimes only with lens IS on RF lenses
IBIS sometimes makes the image get funky so I don’t mind not having it

I’ll be the first to say this 👀 what do you think of the new C400 as an upgrade to the C70? Especially compared to the Komodo X with similar body style and 6K quality. Would love to see you pick one up and compare them
Definitely making a video on this! Would love to get my hands on the c400 at some point
@@thomas.kovacik would be great if Canon could loan you one before they ship to the general public in September. Maybe I’ll buy a C400 instead of a C70
Get me turned on… can ProRes raw on FX3 compare to red raw in KX?
I’m sure it gets closer but I’d say no

Thoughts on the c400?
Mayyyy make a video on this
TLDR- it’s a solid camera for canon shooters, and I’m happy with my KX move

Are you going to keep your C70 as a spare?
Nope! Sold it, wish I could’ve kept it but it made sense to sell it

Bro we have the same first and last name
Now move komodo c400 keep moving 😊
Haha c400 looks nice! But I don’t have a need for it
You couldn’t wait until the announcement on June 5?
I bought this camera on 12/31/23 haha
Honestly, I think you made a mistake. I have the komodo X with all the bells and whistles and it's been a disappointment. Image quality doesn't exceed FX6, no image stabiliser, no built in nd's. I use the breakthrough VND and battle vignetting. C70 might not have the sexy name but you're gonna miss all that it offers. Image quality is on par for less than half the price.
On that note, I'm selling if anyone wants haha
Eh I’ve been reaaaallly happy with this camera haha
The c70 / fx6 crush though, they’re so versatile
it's an el zone not ei
Just get a Blackmagic. It’s optimized for the best NLE DaVinci resolve.
R3D runs really well tho
Plus the minimal setup on the KX is sooo ideal for what I want
Blackmagic are solid but I’m not a fan of working with em haha
@@thomas.kovacikmy comment is meant more for your followers who likely can’t afford a red. I would tell these young cinematographers to invest in Lighting, Lenses, & Audio. If they do that then the camera choice won’t matter as much. A 10k budget could start an entire production company rather than just have a camera.
Of course, a Blackmagic or fx3 or similar will be a rec for those starting out
I have a tough time recommending even a c70 or fx6 for beginners haha
but yes 1000% lighting, lensing and audio is important to dial in up front
