      How has the boot up time/black shading been in the more "run & gun" scenarios ? Thinking about making the switch from FX3 for more doc-style outdoor work

    • @thomas.kovacik
      @thomas.kovacik  8 месяцев назад +3

      hasn't been an issue! I black shade at the start of every day, then again at lunch (just bc) but most scenarios the light doesn't come on saying you need to black shade.
      Bootup time is forsure slower- the c70 was like 1-2 seconds, fx3 is the same. I just turn it on and leave it going until I know we are moving locations or not shooting or whatever
      The fx3 is really solid and versatile, I would try to add something to go alongside it. There's been so many times where I reach for the fx3 for the speed, but man the KX IQ, workflow and ergonomics are reaaaally nice
      It's crazy minimal with that dsmc3 monitor and it feels great when running around solo haha

    • @nathanael_marguereta_dop
      @nathanael_marguereta_dop 8 месяцев назад

      @@thomas.kovacik For the blackshading, make sure you let the camera get up to working temperature (just turn it on, let it be for 5 mins and then do the shading, even longer if it's super cold). Otherwise you'll blackshade for a colder temperature then what the camera will be

    Global shutter is one thing I didnt expect to love so much but also, the difference between 4k to 6k is HUGE from 8ish megapixels to 19megapixels. I’ve started using this for my photo shoots and its blown my mind.

    Yeah so the ProRes can be a little confusing. ProRes in Red’s can only shoot 4K max. But if you set your sensor to 6k 17:9, you’ll use the entire size of your sensor. So “technically” it says 6k, but it’s only 4k. If you set your sensor to 4K, it’ll just crop in.

    Its worth noting CFexpress like Cfast (SATA 2/3) is just its using the new NVMe 1x/4x interface, so with most camaras you can just use adapters and run 4-8TB NVMe SSDs at the same cost of these native cards, some brands are just outright using M.2 SSDs on caddy sleds witch makes far more sence easy to get, easy to replace, easy to conformal coat etc.

    • @thomas.kovacik
      @thomas.kovacik  7 месяцев назад

      That’s an option too! I hate running external media- did that on the p6k. But if you’re doing event / studio / stuff that doesn’t mind a fragile setup then that’s forsure a great move

    • @TheRealHarrypm
      @TheRealHarrypm 7 месяцев назад

      @@thomas.kovacik I've never had an issue with it because it's very easy to rig and protect media cabling lines, massive amount of upfront savings when you consider how much has to be invested into LTO tape for maintaining a local archive per project, you just dump a drive into an ingestion and just pop a new one in and off to go.

    Thank you for posting, Tom. Well done. Insightful and comprehensive. A couple little discussed and pluses of Komodo are the fact that 4K is downsampled from 6K with no cropping. So, I guess it’s sort of like the FX9 without the slow readout speed being GS. The GS gives it a filmic look. I shot 35mm film for 10 years and this is the closest digital camera to that I’ve shot with. Another point is REDs exceptional customer service. Email or call them anytime and you’ll reach a RED pro.

    Thanks for the video, very informative and honest. I think that for your type of work the just released Canon C400 would be the ideal camera. The Komodo X would still produce better images (more filmic) than the c400 (more video look), but the functionality of the C400 seems unbeatable for run & gun, corporate, comercial, broadcasting. Personally, and in terms of image quality, I would have invested on the coming Blackmagic Ursa Cine 12K ($15K) with its new FF sensor and impresive capabilities, but I understand that this brand is not requested enough in your local area and network, and maybe it's not suited for the type of work you do. However, I think this is going to change in the next couple of years. Blackmagic is taking the high-end cinema camera market very seriously and their camera hardware and color science is getting better and better.

    I have the regular Komodo and work on bigger sets and it's been a struggle tbh , no evf, no internal ND, only one SDI.. and having to rig it out completely is so much work. The file size is also massive which makes it an expensive workflow on the C-Fast cards. Still trying to figure out how to rig out the best set up for myself but for people that work with a bigger team its not the best camera.. Beautiful image quality though

    • @thomas.kovacik

      yeah the KX adds some nice upgrades with the dsmc3 monitor allowing for the sdi to be open for TX. Built in vlock plate means no more adapter from BP to vmount. It can get by, but yeah it's def not the most convenient for larger sets. I think I'd pick a raptor 10/10 times for those bigger jobs, or better yet - an Alexa haha
      The KX is really versatile for solo operators who find themselves on small teams / solo. I think the raptor would be too overkill for most of my things right now haha

      I have zero regrets on my investment! If I bought a raptor... I may be a bit worried, but if I bought one- it would be out on set / being rented often which definitely helps offset worries
      Now with nikon / red, we may see them shift into Z mount, but im not sure
      for the price of 7k for the kx now, it's an absolute steal. If you have the means, I would forsure get one. IF a red doesn't make sense, I would look at the c400 bc of workflow benefits
      I'm about 15-18k all in on the KX, if I was any more invested (30k+) I'd be a little worried just bc red is known for losing value quickly haha, but you only lose that value if you sell hahah
      RED is still RED in a way, these cameras are still great, some are still using DSMC2 often

    The Red DSCMc3 monitor is another $2500+ so you're spending a lot and still not getting internal NDs. And when you tack on a battery behind it, the weight is not THAT far off from a c70 WITH battery. And of course, video production is the whole pipeline with a good portion of the heavy lifting being done in the colour grading. I mean, it's good you have this as you wanted it, but for THAT much more money compared to, say, a C80, is it THAT much better proportionate to the money? IMO, no.

    • @thomas.kovacik
      @thomas.kovacik  Месяц назад

      That money is worth streamlining the rig + having camera control- having a 7” smallHD on my c70 meant I needed power and HDMI- with no camera control
      V mount on camera is way easier and cleaner that vmount on rods + channeling a cable into camera- yes the c70 without vmount is smaller and lighter which is nice
      Yeahhh I need to make a video on this soon bc people told me to wait for these new canons, now that they’re out I’m glad I didn’t wait
      If anything I’d take another c70 haha
      But yeah, the red monitor is expensive for most- for me it’s worth it. When you compare it to the price of a cine 7 with red control it’s about the same price but the cine 7 can be used anywhere- but you’re stuck to using 3 cables and SDI protocol
      The red monitor is really really convenient

    Watched this twice, great video. Had mine for about a month now, so it's nice seeing all of my initial thoughts confirmed in one concise video.

    Honestly, I think you made a mistake. I have the komodo X with all the bells and whistles and it's been a disappointment. Image quality doesn't exceed FX6, no image stabiliser, no built in nd's. I use the breakthrough VND and battle vignetting. C70 might not have the sexy name but you're gonna miss all that it offers. Image quality is on par for less than half the price.
