Nice seeing younger video producers understanding the value of practicality. Most of the time all they care about is shooting everything RAW at the highest resolution. Not all clients hire you because they think you’re Steven Spielberg
Appreciate it! Yeah it's fun to look into gear and the newest thing / all the specs But if it doesn't make my life easier with these projects, then it's useless I would love a Komodo, but the c70 makes more sense haha
I shoot sony every day, and while most of the time im happy with ten bit, I'd appreciate it if they started including 12bit internally in new cine cams. Ninja isn't practical for my workflow.
If most of the content is for RUclips, all of these ultra specs will go unnoticed. If the intended viewing medium is a theater movie screen, then yes, high end specs will make more of a difference. At the end of the day, its the creativity of the creator that makes the biggest impact. Just my opinion, but at the same time there is nothing wrong with using high end gear either. Creating something from nothing should be a joy.
really appreciate that! it’s hard to keep it at 10min for these videos sometimes, there’s just so much to cover haha just depends on the topic i guess!
I'm still using the c100mki and mkii after a decade and I really couldn't be happier. Great image, small file sizes. It's been a workhorse over the years. Almost went for the C70 but the weak hinge on the screen that tends to break and the lack of full XLR inputs really held me back. I wish Canon would have just put everything the C70 has into a C100 body and call it the mkiii. The formfactor of the C70 is absolutely amazing and I love it.. it just doesn't allow for proper and robust audio inputs.
I really want to the C100 mkii for project, youtube and doc work. The C70 looks so lush, but the price though worth it is out of my reach at the moment, I love what you said about the small file sizes and amazing battery life. I'm usually a one camera body and lens guy. I think it maybe worth doing the same here.
I have 1 C70 and 2 C100mkii, I love these setup for podcasting and interviews. The C100mkii looks very film like but the C70 is way sharper and haves more dynamic range for sure. I don’t envy any Sony or red owners for what I do. Music videos, podcasting and interviews
With my FX3 I'm going for the FX6 as the A cam. I love shooting shoulder rigged and owning an FS5m2 right now.. the ergonomics on these cameras are incredible and the ultimate Swiss Army of cinema cameras.
As someone who recently, and happily, picked up the FX30, I was looking at what camera I may upgrade or add to my gear in the future. Owning a Sony camera, I have been thinking that the FX6 would be a natural progression in choosing a higher end camera. But, I'm leaning back to the C70. Why? Well, as a low budget/indie filmmaker, I need to shoot with a camera that I can use anywhere without drawing attention to myself. So, cameras that "look" like a DSLR would be a good choice. In that vain, the C70 has that look. Whereas, the FX6 looks like a cinema camera. Solution? In DaVinci Resolve, you have the Color Space Transform tool that allows you to match shots from multiple cameras, regardless of manufacturer. So, I can see shooting with the FX30 on gimbals or quick run and gun situations, and the C70 for the locked off shots, etc. This video actually helped in making this decision. Subscribing.
100% that's a great idea! Glad this video helped you out Owning cameras that work best for your needs is highly recommended vs blindly picking something based off of being in a certain brand
My needs are vastly different as a stock video producer but I literally went through all those rabbit holes and came to the same conclusions lol. It was almost weird hearing your breakdown. I got the FX3 at launch and it’s stellar for my workflow and needs. Great vid!
Those updates have been just soo gooood, never expected the c70 to get raw. I upload a lut for image reference and record raw, so the lut doesn't get carried on to the final image.
hahah love it! Yeahhhh haha, it really just depends Back when I made that video I couldn't afford a c70 / fx6, so the fx3 was the best option for me I'm still keeping it, but having a proper cinema camera for work is just so dang nice haha
No doubt. I bought the Komodo when it was launched the summer of 2020, and while i was waiting for it to come in, they announced the C70. and i was so bummed. because during that summer i was on a travel job shooting on the C500 mkii, and man, i was kind of regretting that i already bought the Komodo. The RED is definitely a PIA for tiny crews or low budgets.
Thanks for stopping by, love your videos! Yeah the komodo is great, but man is that c70 a workhorse. Internal ND, great audio, great AF, all the buttons you could need, RF lenses work well with it, and canon keeps giving it updates so now we have RAW LT / ST. It's been great for myself as a solo op The KX looks enticing bc it fixes a lot of issues I had with komodo og, but yeah it's not as ideal for the majority of projects alot of us work on hah. I go back and forth deciding what to do with my c70 and it's just too good. I wish it was in the style of the c500, but the small footprint makes it a dream for travel gigs
appreciate it! yeah each camera has it's preferred environment / workflow that it's geared towards I can of course take my c70 traveling, but it's gonna be big and annoying and overkill lol
I'm in the exact same position as you in terms of the type of work that I do and the cameras that I've tried (except I have the A7SIII instead of the FX3). Thanks so much for this video! You answered all my questions and I agree with all of your points! I was on the verge of pulling the trigger on the Canon C70 and now I've just pressed the "Add to Cart" button :D
haha love it! You'll be stoke with it Both cameras are at the top of their respective markets I feel I'm a few months in and couldn't be happier- the c70 has been incredible to work with I know I would be happy with the fx6 as well but having something different has been fun
I have an FX9 and recently sold my Komodo and bought a C70, with the raw update on the C70 it’s a more versatile camera overall than the Komodo. I’ve used the FX9 and the C70 as two camera set up for interviews and in Resolve you can get them to match. Komodo has a great image but falls short in a lot areas, FX9 and FX6 only have 7 stops of ND vs C70 having 10 stops, in bright daylight I find I still need more ND to shoot wide open or even a stop down from wide open on the FX9.
dang that's a unique position too! Love how you saw the c70 for what it is when comparing it to the Komodo for your workflow So rad that they work well for two camera setups yeah the 10 stops of ND is pretty clutch for midday shooting, definitely nice to have in the kit
I'm thinking to trade my Komodo for a C70 as well, but to be honest, never seen a really good image from the C70. What can you say about it's image vs Komodo?
@@76tygfgug From my experience - theyre very very close, the red does feel richer in some settings I've never been disappointed with the footage from the c70, at the end of the day you're trading off something with both cameras, but they are also so incredible that im sure you'd be happy with either The workflow of the c70 alone kept me from getting a Komodo
@@76tygfgugthe C70 is a tiny sensor in a prosumer body that delivers a very “video” image. Different target altogether from the Komodo. Not to mention the internal ND’s are mediocre. But you have to correct the image so much in post anyway, you can usually clean up the color shifts they cause, especially at higher densities.
Im in the same boat. I have the 6K Pro and I love it for set work but it’s impossible for run/gun work which I still do occasionally. Especially as I have permanently adapted it to PL mount. My job got a C70 and the more I use it, the more I like it. Will probably move to it.
that 6k pro is a solid deal forsure! Yeah the c70 feels more well rounded than the p6k, which isn't a bad thing for the p6k Highly recommend the c70, it's incredible for run n gun / set work!
Really enjoyed hearing your thought process behind getting the C70 and your plans for what types of lenses you plan to build your kit with. I personally own an A7IV for my own stuff, but use C70's for most of my professional work! Definitely hard to decide which lenses to invest in haha
appreciate it! Love that, can't go wrong with sony and canon nowadays, especially when you have experience with both for work yeah I try to not buy many modern lenses bc you never know hah If I do end up with a FX6 or something I could see the value with owning GM lenses, but often times I shoot with my vintage lenses anyways bc of the look / feel so I get grounded quick when I start thinking about the RF 24-70 or GM lol
@@shuggfilmzandstudio2354 I explain it in the video! I have one Sony lens so I wasn’t committed Plus, I use my ef vintage lenses on any camera I use The c70 is a better fit for my commercial jobs
honestly, as an old filmmaker, everything I have seen of the c70 compared to the Sony or the Komodo, the c70 images look much more like studio images when they filmed movies on 35mm film cameras...far less contrasty and digitally sharp than the Komodo or Sony....it has more pleasing rolloff and softer "filmic" image.....Im here at the end of 2023 about to purchase one to shoot my next feature on as an A-cam to go all in and test it out...
One thing I've realized while transitioning more to gaffing: no matter how good your camera is, if you don't light it right the image still looks like sh*t. So the main factors are: is the camera industry standard? And, is it built in a way that you can work well with it? After those two considerations, all the other specs are extra, and then it's time to focus on other things like lighting (and lenses). "I like it" really is a good enough reason to choose a camera.
100% everything in front of the sensor is sooo important. I've shot good / bad things with every camera and it all came down to lighting, composition, framing, movement and so much more I agree, as long as you're cool with the workflow with that camera then go for it haha
By the way Thomas, after your video I started to searching for the fixed (non variable) ND filters, and I found a very interesting option! Marumi has a magnetic set of NDs made specific for the video! Marumi Movie Kit. The key feature of this set is that it has 1 stop, 2 stops, 3 and 4. And it designed to be used in combination, like 4+3 stops to achieve 7 stops. And as I understand it doesn’t loose details and colour. I think it should be much better quality than Freewell. So with this set you can put any stops ND without needing to close the aperture. And because of magnetic it will be pretty fast
Love this breakdown man. I definitely think you and I have similar work environments and styles with our clients, and definitely has make me think more about when I buy my A Cam. I have a Rigged Sony Fx3 that has been incredible this last year, but I was one of those people who got stuck in the Fx6 backorder... cancelled my order due to timeframe. Have still been looking at the Fx6 now that it is back in stock and being privately sold, but the C70 has definitely gotten way more appealing. Thank for the thorough breakdown... Especially because I used to be Canon. Will make me think for sure.
appreciate it! That fx3 is incredible, dang yeah that backorder time was so gnarly to watch the c70 is great to consider, if you're using all modern e lenses, it may get tough but sometimes people are willing to buy lenses for both systems!
Thank you for sharing your insights and this comparison! I am looking for an "A" cam myself, and it was definitely useful to be able to observe your thinking patterns - thank you again! Great Video!
I had a similar mind set for the reason I bought a c70. I love and appreciate all brands being mainly a canon user, I still think Sony kills it with their products especially with low light performance (something canon struggles with) but the form factor and easy of use.
love it! yeah sony has some really insane tech + workflows. Definitely can't go wrong, and it pretty much all comes down to preference with lensing / systems which is great
I found this video very informational - thanks for it! I am looking to go from my M50 to a Canon cinema camera for the XLR inputs and hopefully better image quality. I just have a small YT channel...do you think it would be worth it to get the C70 for $5000 new over the C200 for $2000 used, if I already have EF lenses? Thanks for your consideration.
thanks! Yeah the c70 is like the modern c200 For 2000 the c200 crushes, if you shoot RAW. You'll also need to grab those CF cards which can get expensive - c70 uses sd the c70 will give you more options for lenses with the RF mount, better battery life, better raw codec (smaller file size) and 10bit non raw files the c200 could be a great move as the ef lenses are cheaper, but you'd be shooting 4k 12bit raw or 8bit 420 1080p which is rough sometimes I would say c70 for future proofing and ease of use / file sizes. You could save money with that overtime The dgo sensor is also incredible
@@thomas.kovacik Thanks! I ended up finding a deal on a used C200 for $1500, which I think is a good in between step for me. Not sure if I will shoot raw yet, as I hate dealing with huge file sizes.. we shall see. Anyway, the chepeast I found a C70 was something $5000, so for now the C200 will be pretty sweet, I think. Cheers!
Really enjoyed this review, dude. I got to the video world with Canon Mark 3 I had bought 7 or 8 years ago and then I switched to Sony system for few years. But Sony A7III was a huge disappointment for me and in spite of getting new A7SIII I've got myself a Red Dragon 6K and I really enjoyed it. The media straight from the camera was perfect and I could see the smallest details at the actors coat. But this the biggest problem was that this camera was heavy as hell and you always need a few v-mount batteries, huge gimbal like Ronin 2 that turned every project to really expensive one. I was lucky to sell it fem months after purchasing it. I loved the quality, but the clients didn't want to deal with r3d and sometimes they just wanted a quick proress material. That was a big challenge for me to switch from Sony FX6, FX3, Red Komodo and C70, and I got the last one and I love it. These perfect canon colors remind me the time I was using my old eos camera for my first projects. This camera is perfect for my sigma 18-35 and 50-100 (that I use probably 85 percent of my filming) that I usually used with red dragon and BMPCC6K. I've got a speedbuster and now I can use full frame EF lenses. But the same time I had a lot of projects to film with Sony users or for a production that have only Sony cameras. This fall I had few projects for 40-50 days and I realized I could rent it every day so I've got myself a FX3 and I enjoy it too. These are great cameras and I used them separately or together. That's amazing they have some cool features. Its like having a two cars with different characters. These two cameras are great and I like that you enjoy them too %)
appreciate it! yeah those old Sony's were brutal haha, the color was just so odd and the log curves didn't work well with 8 bit- I think it added a bad taste to a lot of people's perspective on sony when the new generation came out (a7iv, a7siii, fx3, etc) Yeah that red setup is gorgeous but you're right the workflow definitely gets deeper with it Love it! I feel the c70 is a great choice for you, haha love it you got a fx3 too! Both are incredible, and it's so nice to have them depending on the needs. Sometimes I do prefer working with the fx3 bc of size haha Thanks for watching and sharing that!
I have literally been going back and forth with buying the Komodo. Thank you for this! I went to film tools yesterday and they said the c70 would be perfect if I do a lot of documentary work. So I want to test it out
Brittney! I enjoyed watching your videos when you were agonizing over the c200, bmpcc cams and other models. Eventually you settled in the Sony ecosystem but I always felt like you had this great workflow with the c200. Give in to the darkside! Come to team Canon....lol.
Great video! Watching this just reminds me of the “switch”. Everything we seem to want from our cameras now is what we had 15 years ago with the dedicated video camera. A compact, all in one camera with built in xlr audio and built in ND filters. A single fixed Lens we didn’t (and couldn’t) fuse with, all with great stabilization. However, the interchange prime lenses with the fantastic low light and cinematic look is such a game changer. Eye pleasing look, but with the price tag of a car and a silly rig. Some day they will make the absolute perfect camera, they are getting close…but for now the struggle continues 😂 and I’d rather just get a simple great shot from my iPhone ☺️
You make some valid points here Thomas, and although I don't totally agree with you, I can definitely see where you come from. I've had the c70 for a while (since it was released) and yes, the image quality is amazing, and you're right in that how good a camera is all depends on your own workflow. I ultimately decided to sell my C70, mainly because of its size/weight, but especially because of the terrible performance in low light, which is a huge requirement for the type of projects I do. So yes, it all comes down to workflow. I also shoot both Canon and Sony, but I lean towards the Sony for most of my projects because of the type of filmmaking I do. Great video!!
appreciate it! Totally get why you would lean sony! It's still an incredible camera no doubt, that EVND is so useful, having sdi is nice and the dual base iso is just insane to work with. Definitely one of my fav features on the fx3
I agree with your non fanboy approach. I also wanted to love Fuji GFX for my photography work yet Canon just makes so much more sense for what I do while keeping my kit minimal.
love it, yeah that GFX is a great camera! but again it has strengths and weaknesses- a r5 + gfx 100s would be a great workhorse combo But for now, yeah the canon can do it all until you need an upgrade or something different
Interesting. I went the opposite direction. These two are a good set. I’m not getting rid of the C70, but using FX3 as B-cam and A-cam for a lighter set up in simple shoots to cut down weight. I always prefer the colors of the C70, but it’s heavy for gimbal use. Both are good.
Great video. I think this camera is perfect mash up of a mirrorless and cinema cam. I was perfectly happy with my combo of baby fx3 (zv-e1) and BM6KFF but I made a silly offer on eBay and got the c70 just for the fun of it. I have had few canons including c200, r8 and r6II and I mostly disliked them. C70 is winning me over very quickly. The DR is insane. It’s so intuitive to use. I still prefer the image out of 6KFF when shooting in decent light but not by a great margin. C70 has that filmic soft vibe like my older Blackmagic Cameras. Af and the better choice of frame rate are also a factor. It will be a hard choice in the end.
I'm using the fx30 rn, and ive used the fx3, s5, c100 mark ii, and the more i use these cameras, the more i come to realize how big internal nd's really are. My next choices next really would be something like a c70, fx3, or fx6. I do love the smaller files sizes for c70 though... thats something i love. And maybe i do go to c70, then later the fx6.
It really is so convenient, I can't stress enough how great it is to work with haha yeah all three of those cameras would be great! can't go wrong with any of them. I love the fx3 / c70 combo- gives me the best tools for specific jobs
2:19 yes!! Rigging a camera just to rig out is not the best option. It's easier for a fully built out straight of the box camera. You don't know until you try one out!
very true! I always had my FX3 rotating through it's setups from minimal, to semi rigged to full rig. It's so nice having flexibility with it! The c70 has been through the same process so far too, it's been nice not having to rely on an external monitor for either of them
@@thomas.kovacik yup especially once you slap on that heavy fatty battery, it defeats the purpose! I always loved using the c100, fs5s, and now the black magic ursa!
Awesome video! This is what many people are looking for. The do-it-all doc style camera. The combination of good af, battery, 10 bit compressed and uncompressed codecs, internal nds, video assist tools like false color, shutter angle, C4k. This all makes for the ultimate camera and rn I think the c70 is the only camera that really does this. Can’t wait to see if the new version of the Fx3 add that internal Evnd like I thought the first version would along with adding the other cinema features like false color and shutter angle. Maybe even see it in all in a hybrid body someday like a future A7 Vl
appreciate it! it's absurd how stacked this c70 is, plus it's just so dang small! I can see myself using this thing for a very long time Yeah I wonder what sony would do! it would make sense to have that ENVD to make it fit better with the fx line false color + shutter angle would be so ideal too!
I've had pocket 6k, 1dx ii, komodo & c70. I do outdoor/offroad filming and the komodo had awesome image quality, but it was a pain for run & gun. It gets heavy when built out with just a screen and one small battery, cables all over like rigging a pocket cam and it takes forever to turn on and off, then gotta black balance more. The c70 was the nicest for run n gun that I've used. Komodo still has a nicer image, deep colors and more depth to the image. C70 + R5C is the best combo for run n gun and still need some photos or second camera angle sometime.
I love the practical approach. While I do want a C70, I’m a hybrid shooter as we do both professional headshots and product photography as well as client branding and promotional videos I think I’m going get the R5C first. And probably in the next year, get the C70
Looking forward to more c70 settings, rigging, tests, techniques and work flow videos Haven't used my c70 handheld enough since I have an r5 with a stabilized sensor. But since that makes ultra wide lenses wobbly I've been wanting to try out the c70 handheld more. Would love to know your techniques and settings when going handheld and if you use digital stabilizing
appreciate it, me too! Lots on the way Yeah the r5 warping is an odd one, not sure if they've fixed it at all but I remember seeing how bad it was on wide angle lenses haha for the c70 I dont use digital stabilization- but practicing handheld shooting is key. Movements are important, weight of the camera, and if you really need to smoothen the jitters, getting RF glass with IS built in is key I plan on doing a video about handheld shooting, I'm really stoked on that one
@@superfly13161205 yeah cameras get micro jitters when theyre light. Having IS in lens, or stabilization in body will help with that Same with adding loads of weight to your camera kit, having a heavier setup to hold doesn't move as much as a lighter setup - thus less micro jitters
You rock!! Thanks for making this video! I'm considering all of these cameras and being steered towards c70 as I already have a R3 for stills. Thanks brah!
Thanks for this video. I am on the same path as you are except I shoot with Canon R6mkII which is amazing both for stills and video. I am really considering the C70, but I am not sure at all. With Ninja V+ I can get some serious RAW out of the R6mkII and thats full frame. But you are absolutely right that C70 is just video dedicated camera "out of the box", where with R6mkII I have to rig and fiddle around. Great video.
the r6 mk2 looks solid! Yeah I tend to stay away from the ninja, I've heard it's good but I'd rather just keep the kit small on cameras like that and shoot with internal codecs yeah the c70 is just so dang good, you need media, a battery, maybe a mic and a lens and you're set haha
i do a lot of int'l solo travel, which is why i bought the fx3. it fits on my peak design tripod, it fits in my backpack or clips onto my peak design clip on backpack strap. It's such a light, small footprint when traveling. That being said, it seems like the C70 with built-in audio and nds, would make for an easier experience to make high quality docs out there. Having used both, would you still use the fx3 for int'l solo travel? Or would you bring the C70 with you now? The size /weight / conspicuousness seems like the main deterrent
love the fx3! it’s such a versatile camera i’m still keeping the fx3 for travel! especially personal if i’m doing a paid travel shoot, i may consider the c70 it’s definitely a bit bigger and draws more eyes, though it being small for a cinema camera the fx3 was always my go-to youtube / travel camera. it’s overkill for most, but it’s perfect for my needs haha
I’m kind of where you were a year ago. Just bought an fx3 after squeezing everything I could out of an A7iii. Hopefully 1-3 years down the line I can move up to a more robust camera system
heck yes the fx3 is incredible! Master it and get good nd filters / accessories and you can live with that for a very very long time Cinema cameras are just ideal for certain scenarios, that fx3 is a great mix of both mirrorless / cinema- I love it
@@thomas.kovacik yeah I generally shoot high volume quick content for social media and the more agile and compact the better. I have a nice 6 stop ND so it works well in most outdoor Bright scenarios
Would you choose the Sony fx3 or the r6 mark ii for documentary/vlog content? For some reason, I enjoy using canon cameras more than Sony. Great Content
Hmm I haven't used that r6 mark 2 yet! the fx3 is a workhorse though, and it's tiny That r6 mark2 looks interesting bc it's way cheaper, and they have a photo / video setting now
Great video, I think I’m about to pick up an FX3 to supplement my F55. Totally random, but where did you get that coffee tray at 34:29? I’ve been looking for one for my Hario v60. Thanks!
Love this. As an R6 + 1D X II user, I’ve been thinking about a C70 since it came out, but so far I’ve just rented them multiple times. But man, it would shave off workflow time for reaallll
Man...this is one of the best videos I´ve seen so far. I enjoyed watchin it soo much. On one breath. Looking forward to work/meet you some time haha! Did something change throughout the last year, that you would say...C70 in 2024...maybe wait till the C70 Mark 2? The only thing that would be cool, from my point of view, is that the C70 or mark 2 should have a dual native iso at least like 800 and 3200 or maybe even 6400-12.8000 haha. But anyway! Really enjoyed watching the video :)
Thank you! haha I cut all the breaths out I think canon has some new cameras on the way so I'd wait if you wanna spring for the new one. Not sure when it'll come out / ship though If you need one now, I'd get one still! it's a great camera and super cheap, and you can run it as a B im sure to the newer ones Hoping the new canon's have dual base iso, 6k sensor, CFE cards, sdi and some other cool features thanks for the kind words!
I really hate the hassle with these half-baked cameras. Dealbreakers: S35 (welcome to 2016), Mini-XLR (good luck with that), Marketing "internal RAW recording" when it's only 12 bit compressed slush and not 14/16 bit full fat (Sony users had this discussion over 6 years ago, btw.). Why i bought the FX6: Dual channel MMI (2 lavs, no cables, no batteries), 12.800 base iso, Auto-ND, skintones and the fact that i can just drop in some FX3s/FX30s and everything will work beautifully. One thing i have learned the hard way: never buy into idiotic audio cables/connectors and things that need Batteries. Ideally: no cables at all and one single battery. There's a reason why shoulder Camcorders have drop-in slots for wireless audio systems.
Seems like you found the proper cam for ya! I actually dont mind FF vs S35 anymore, I love using both Mini xlr has been fine- I love having it in body unlike the fx6 - allows me to keep the kit small and I can use any top handle I want yeah the RAW is a nice lil bonus, I know it's not like R3D but being able to adjust WB / ISO is pretty cool right? Yeah the cable less workflow is so ideal- I love the sony b10 mic that goes into the hotshoe- canon's version of that looks pretty weak haha The fx6 is a fantastic camera no doubt
I needed this video… I’ve had the C70 for over a year, i pared it up with the R7 as a b cam. I’ve been drooling over the FX6 for about 6 months but it’s always been sold out. There’s something about the TEXTURE of Sony video lately that makes it really pleasing. Last week I called to order the FX30 and they happened to have an FX6 in stock also. So I got the FX6 and FX30. After playing with them for a few hours, I not really feeling the ergonomics of the FX6 and there are way too many buttons for me. Guess I like the simplicity of the C70 for my workflow. Guess the Sonys are going to be returned and I’m sticking to canon.
Ive been thinking about my selling my C70 and R3 and switching to Sony. Everyone is praising Sony and I can't lie it makes you want to make the switch lol. Im getting tired of canon not adding clog 2 and other features to their mirrorless cameras.
I would prob sell the R3 for the FX3 if so, the c70 is a great camera and the fx6 is solid too, but I think you could be happy with the fx3 over the R3
FX3 For versatility, c70 for image quality Would depend on what I need it to do If I didn’t do RUclips or care about travel filming, 100% c70 every time
@@thomas.kovacik thanks for replying! Would you mind making an updated how you expose for clog 2 on c70? Also would love to see how you graded and edited Sebastian Lletget / A New Chapter (Canon C70 + Contax Zeiss) video.
100% this- I was so sold on the r5 / r6 til working with them for video, they're great as a true b camera for video, but personally I felt they weren't robust enough for my client work. Renting the fx3 was a fantastic decision- if you're doing this as a profession, that few hundred dollars is definitely not wasted
@@thomas.kovacik hell yea I see a lot of people think that the camera they want is the one that’s best for their needs and when they get it they hate it or it doesn’t fit their style of shooting
Nice breakdown. I Own BM Cameras (From the Pocket 4K to The Ursa G2) and they are specialized cameras for real unless you can build a compact rig which I've managed to do with some rigging pieces. On the point of NDs... approach purchasing NDs the way you do a camera body. A lot of VNDs are okay to a point and then they go crazy when you try to stop them down too much my advice is in the future as you do more commercial work make sure you invest in solid IRNDs.
thank you! Yeah VNDs aren't the move I finally found nisi IRND 3 and 6 stop circular filters - these have filled the gap well for internal nd I use them on my fx3, and will use them on any camera I get in my hands that needs NDs Matte boxes are ideal with nicer filters, but sometimes the size / workflow isn't ideal for run n gun stuff I wish I had those nisi IRNDs when I shot on the pocket 6k, man that would've helped a ton lol
Great video. Amazing journey to get to the right creative tool for you. I just went through a similar journey upgrading from an aps-c Sony camera, and I found myself with a Panasonic s5. Obviously a much more entry level camera for filmmaking, but after working with it for the last month, I know I made the right decision for what I'm doing at this moment. The S5 is an amazing camera. Thanks so much for sharing, it opened my mind up to a lot of possibilities in the future. Actually, I didn't even think that I could probably adapt EF lenses to my L mount. I have to check that out. Anyway, stay well, and keep making great art. :-)
Thank you! Always so nice to have that affirmation after time spent with new gear haha, glad you found something that works for you! So glad this video was helpful for you! Yeah I totally recommend adapting different lenses to your camera! allows for more looks and a different way of shooting with manual focus Cheers!
This was a great video bro! Have been loving my FX3 and looking forward to getting the absolute best out of it over the next year. Secretly hoping there’s some magical leaps forward in internal ND technology that allows it to fit in a smaller factor cinema camera, otherwise I’m happy with what I’ve got. Looking forward to seeing what’s next in updates to this cam though. Your perspective is so refreshing as well, at the end of the day these are all tools to do a job. I’m pretty tired of hearing about colour science and ecosystems when all you need is something that you enjoy using and gets the work done.
appreciate it! that fx3 is just so incredible, such a great setup for a ton of workflows! yeah I'm sure there will be something in the pipeline, would be pretty insane! thanks Lucas, yeah it's pretty tiring hearing all of that stuff / people getting annoyed at what cameras you use lol
I've been struggling to pick between these cameras. i can't tell you how much I appreciate this video. You not only sold me on the C70, but gave reasonings that made total sense that I couldn't really find online elsewhere. Thank you! You have a new subscriber. My ONE question for you though: color science wise, do you think canon looks better than BRAW or Sony? Or do those other ones have preferable color science in your opinion?
Appreciate it! Glad you understand where I'm coming from, lots of people get upset that I didn't go sony bc I already own one haha Sooooo it really depends I prefer canon for my client work, there's just this depth to the image and the rolloff of the highlights it's just gorgeous For RUclips stuff, the canon is fine but I for some reason prefer my sony. it's hard to explain but maybe I'm just used to seeing myself with the sony. I really didn't like the canon r5 / r6 footage for some reason, the DR didn't feel as good as my fx3 or c70, so for a mirrorless setup forsure sony BRAW is great, but I never truly fell in love with it. I really enjoyed it but I think the canon image fits my style more. I do want to try the Ursa 12k at some point, it seems really sick and having internal ND would be helpful (I shot on the p6k and used vnd filters back in the day) All 3 are amazing, especially nowadays and you can't go wrong If I had to rank for client work Canon, BRAW, sony Sony has always felt a bit "plasticy" to me, unless I use vintage lenses to help the image That said, I shoot with my fx3 / c70 for my RUclips videos now and they match up pretty well! hope that's helpful haha
@@thomas.kovacik super helpful, and I appreciate how thorough you were. One more thing I want to ask you about: I’ve been shopping for a camera that can allow me to have stunning high end images for short films, but when client work arrives I can also rely on it to deliver there. That’s why I was so stuck between c70 and Komodo. Komodo seems to have better image quality, but canon has those things like you mentioned in your video, internal audio NDs, stuff like that. For what I’m looking to do, I feel like the c70 is the better option, and is definitely Capable of producing a great image for short films…right? Or, do I spend a bit extra, and use the Komodo for both since the image quality is technically better, and it still has autofocus. Some advice I’ve seen is to get the cheaper camera and get high end lenses, like Dzofilm. Would you say C70 is the better route for what I’m looking for, or maybe the Komodo might fit better? Your two cents would be appreciated
Sounds like the c70 is the move Personally I’m not the biggest fan of the RED image, and their cameras kinda require a small team Sure you can solo op it but having to swap filters, black shade and deal with media doesn’t sound fun solo haha The c70’s image is gorgeous and there’s loads of codecs for media requirements I was enticed by the red but after almost 6 months of owning the c70 I’m so happy with it I could see the need for a c500 or c300 mostly for the build / SDI for bigger sets but that won’t be a move for a little bit The c70 is super versatile, it’s great 100% invest in good lenses, DZO lenses are good but they’re heavy and long Vintage glass is solid, the RF lenses are really good too
@@philrodfilms prob DZO or sigma, tokina too I’m gonna buy some tokina zooms at some point I think, they’re a bit more recognizable and trusted- same with sigma DZO is good but still new to the scene and not as “legit” haha
All of your words in this video make perfect sense to me, I’m kinda falling into the same category, looking for a best all around compact cinema camera, FX6 could’ve been my best bet but the handle/only audio input is definitely a deal breaker. URSA mini is a great camera, but again, too bulky for me, c70 is not my type, not a fan of canon’s color science, so, I think I’ll just wait for a while, hopefully Sony come up with a new FX line fix the fx6 issue, or blackmagic to assemble a cube like camera with a better rolling shutter. The pain of using bmpcc6k/6k pro I relate so much the Frankenstein ergonomic and the power consumption are just driving me nuts.
appreciate it! yeah there's lots of nuance between cameras and styles, it's tough when all of them dont line up enough for your needs! what about a Komodo? that would fix the cube issue of the pocket 6k Yeah the p6k rigging / power was such a bummer for my needs haha, it's a gorgeous camera but having to carry 6+ LPE6 batteries isn't ideal often times haha
@@thomas.kovacik I have all your contax zeiss except 85. I see we share a lot of common gears, I hate Sony’s digital look so I use contax to reduce that, I don’t really care autofocus and IBIS stuff, I don’t use them anyways on my a7s3, I really love the color on p6k, but the rolling shutter and the ergonomic just suck. Like you said, no perfect camera check all the boxes in your favor, that’s the reality, I heard that Komodo is not very reliable, FX9 is my ideal camera but it’s too big and expensive. At the moment on the market I don’t have a clear choice. Hopefully blackmagic design can make a good ergonomically built product. Big fan of their color.
Love how you introduced the Contax vintage primes w/ the speedbooster on your c70! IMO the Canon DGO sensor shines significantly when paired with vintage glass especially with old Canon FD lenses!
Great video! I started with a Blackmagic pocket 4k and ended up with two Canon C70s. I completely agree that internal NDs are a game changer. Something I don't see many talking about is the advantage of being able to purchase EF class and use the 0.71 adapter. Buying used EF glass (I have an EF 24-105) is some of the best cost to quality I've found. I also own the Sigma 18-35 1.8 and Sigma 50-100 1.8 which are both aps-c lenses, yet are also some of the best value to cost as well. Having a large range of used EF glass for the C70 that provide both incredible image quality and reliable autofocus at generally half the price of the full frame/competitors lenses, I've found often makes the overall cost the same or even less than those investing in another system.
appreciate it! the c70 is just so well rounded 100% agree with the EF / 0.71x workflow I dont use modern EF lenses with the c70, but I have a full kit of vintage lenses that are EF converted. pairing that with the 0.71x adapter has been a great move!
definitely the c70! there’s just something going on with that sensor that’s not to say the fx6 is far off either the fx6 just feels very close to my fx3, like there’s no major upgrade with it - though you get a nicer codec i love my fx3 footage especially with vintage glass, i feel the sony glass is one part of the cause for odd colors some people get. the canon RF glass on the c70 is perfect too
@@thomas.kovacik Interesting, I find the fx6 noticeably better than the fx3 (albeit similar) due to the lack of internal sharpening, I feel the fx6 has more of an organic feel to it. With that being said you can match them incredibly well. Loved your previous c70 content though and looking forward to more especially since it has the raw update now!
100% the codec is a lot nicer on the fx6! I can see a difference there, it's just very close - like for me spending 6k for a similar image wasn't ideal considering the c70's bonus with the sensor. Even though I get evnd, sdi, shutter angle etc. Having a significantly better image was nice to get Thank you! yeah that new raw update is pretty insane, doing testing to see how it compares to xfavc / hevc which I used back then Cheers!
Your thought process is well thought out. You made the correct decision for you. You got away from all of the bs and concentrated on your needs, not anything else. You have the cameras that will keep you nimble and productive. I like Tilta cages over Smallrig due to the quality, but Smallrig is a good place to start due to their loads of options and relatively low cost, but with anything when you move up you usually move on. The over two year wait for the fx6 is crazy and I missed out on one twice by 5-10 mins, while making coffee and getting breakfast with the website set, oh well, not meant to be so I will stick with my blackmagic and A7SIII for now. Great video and I think more people should watch this to hear how you came to this brilliant analysis, hype be damned.
appreciate it! tilta does make some good stuff! yeah that fx6 waittime was absurd, I didn't want to order something and have to wait 8 months haha. To be fair it finally came in stock the day I bought my c70.. but I'm not bummed haha really appreciate that, yeah that's the entire point of this video! To help break the norms and really dig down and see the reasons why you should or shouldn't buy something! Thanks for watching!
Having used them both, I haven't seen the dynamic range advantage in C70 I hoped for. I tried pushing them a lot, various lighting conditions, all types of codecs and realized they both have pretty much the same dynamic range, just distributed differently. So, when properly exposed on each, they both yield the same. With that knowledge and knowing FX3 has much better rolling shutter performance and having wider field of view, I've sold the C70. Contemplating a used C500 ii or Alexa XT. But just happy with FX3 by itself. If oscar winner Greg Fraser (of Dune, Batman etc) can shoot an entire Hollywood sci fi movie on FX3, we are kidding ourselves if we really think we need more to be better.
That's interesting. Well Gareth Edwards did shoot his first feature with the old EX3 with a 35mm Letus adaptor and some cheap Nikon primes, so maybe shooting on a modest Sony camera again appealed to his indie roots.
fantastic video! wondering if you sway a certain side if your main work is on IG. trying to focus on IG Reel image quality and feel like i sometimes see really crisp sony videos and not as much canon.
thanks! yeah a bunch of my work actually lives outside of IG- on RUclips, client's website's, amazon pages, etc The c70 was my go-to for any heavy production unless they request fx3. I felt more comfortable using the c70 for those sets For smaller jobs the fx3 absolutely crushes, it's so dang versatile. There's also a reason why I sold the c70 and have kept the fx3 for 2-3 years now haha Right now the KX / FX3 is my setup and it's been so solid. Shooting with the fx3 next week for my biggest job yet- primarily bc they requested sony hah That said, you can make great / bad stuff with any camera haha. Find something that fits your workflow, needs, budget and preferences. The fx3 is forsure my fav for quick IG stuff, but it's tough to beat the IQ on canon / red
Nice one. I hope you'll be really happy with the C70. I've had it since launch, and still love using the camera. With the latest firmware it's such a complete package. I'm so used to built in ND's and having proper audio channels so it's such a nice middle ground between a 'full sized' cinema camera and a mirrorless. I can't see myself finding anything better anytime soon. Agree about being brand agnostic though, I will still have times when I get hired and need to use a different camera system and that's fine, but I know what my preference is! Enjoy
appreciate it! yeah it’s been working really well on my projects so far, i have a few coming up that’ll really put it to work the firmware updates have been crazy! would’ve never expected canon to do this it’s such a solid setup for 90% of users- i love mirrorless cameras as they’re great for personal videos but i could never fully rely on it on certain sets internal ND / audio is so key! totally agree, i just wrapped a project where they rented 2x fx6’s so i know that overtime i’ll be shooting on many brands which is fun!
I'm so invested in Sony glass that I kind of 'had' to go with the FX6. But I'm SO annoyed with how Sony's firmware and features are so oddly staggered between bodies. And the lack of basic audio options for the FX6 is extremely annoying. I keep looking at the Canon offerings and considering switching over. My question... how do you market yourself to get the kinds of gigs you're getting, where the client cares about what camera you have? And how are you pricing those gigs? I know a lot of people market themselves as 'owner operators' and just have their day rate... they charge 800-1500/day and hand over footage at the end of the day (or multiple times a day).
yeah sony makes some odd decisions sometimes! like releasing the FX3 with a diff low base iso than the fx6 haha the audio options are rough on the fx6 bc you’re locked into the handle- it’s a blessing and curse the handle is nice but for travel and stuff where you need a minimal kit if you need audio, you either have to bring a field recorder and mess with that, bring a sound op, or make room for the top handle which is fine for some, but for lower budget run n gun things, i’m not bringing tons of gear so space matters i tend to just shoot with what i have haha, not many clients request stuff besides directors monitors haha i’m keeping the sony for jobs where i have been hired out to shoot sony (primarily hired out by the dp to shoot with the same kit) i’ll still just market myself the same, but i’ll throw options for gear rentals to the production- market price for c70 kit + lenses / fx3 kit + lenses the jobs i have coming up don’t really care too much about brand, it’s mostly having a high quality image (internal ND or matte box, with internal RAW) the size of the c70 will be nice to build around with a teradek / easy rig
@@thomas.kovacik Fantastic! Keep up the good work! Much slower here on Big Island... I don't get called on as an AC or 2nd Camera Op, but maybe that'll change.
Great thoughts Thomas! I went through almost the exact same process but I ended up landing on the Komodo. The c70 seems like an awesome choice though! 🙌
Great video I love how you really narrowed down to the T of what you need. I need to do this same thing when it comes to my cooking videos. I have a question how come you didn’t constitute R5C? Was it battery life, and ND filters?
thank you! The r5c wasn't a thing when I first bought my FX3, it came out a handful of months later The main thing about the R5C for me is ND filters and battery life yeah To me, it's not much more of an upgrade from my FX3 - though it has 8k raw and a 45mp sensor and it's a true hybrid camera with the cinema operating system and such The fx3 just fits my needs better for that type of camera, I dont need photos so I'm not missing that The c70, for another $700 was a much better offering for me I've seen people switch to the r5c, so it looks like a viable camera for some!
@@thomas.kovacik Thanks for responding man I appreciate it. I did notice there’s a typo in my message I meant to say consider lol. But I have trouble picking cameras for my cooking channel because there’s really no channels out that teaches about gear for cooking videos it’s always landscaping, weddings, portraits, sports etc. So for gear to use in the kitchen is hard to find. I’m guessing the lens and lighting may be more important than camera bodies.
all good! yeah cooking shows are pretty niche- I know of one channel that uses all c70s and RF glass, that seems to work really well for their workflow! Lighting is definitely super important, if you can I recommend the 600d and 300d from aputure. 2x 600s would give you plenty to light for ambient / set and use the 300d for close ups and such I feel with the cooking show you may want speed / good battery life / audio built in The c70 / fx6 are definitely key contenders I think
@@thomas.kovacik which channel is that? And thank you so much for this info man I really appreciate that. One more question on top of the last question above, what about lenses?
Hey brother, quick question. I’m a RUclipsr that shoots talking head videos in my indoor studio. But I love to make my videos as if they were professional documentaries, so I’ve aimed to the best cameras I can afford. Right now I’ve been shooting with my FX3. Now, I want to upgrade but don’t know if to get the FX6 or the C70. With the Canon I fell like I’m going to get a more pleasant image quality and skin color, but at the same time I’m worried about the sharpness (since I like very sharp videos) and also the potential noise in the shadows since I shoot in a very dark and moody background to make my image more contrasty. So therefore, which of the 2 cameras do you think is the best option for me? I don’t care about ND filters or weight since the camera is going to be always standing o a tripod. I care about image quality, sharpness and clean shadows. Thanks for your help
Great video. Thank you. I'm going on a run and gun trip following my brother around and wondering if you've ever used the c70 on a gimbal? Do I need one? Also, I know you prefer primes for your glass, but do you have any thoughts on zooms? I'm really trying to travel super light. Again, thanks for this vid. I just subscribed and can't wait to check out the rest of the channel. All the best to ya.
so rad! I haven't personally but you could fly it on the RS3 Pro I think I never use them for my own work, I love handheld / tripod Zooms are great too! if you want a small kit the RF24-70 is a great option, or EF24-105 with adapter Course! Lots more c70 videos on the way
What an excellent video, great content and well thought out! I’m shooting with an fx3 right now and its a great camera, however I really don’t like the audio handle and the limitations in rigging. I don’t like a “cinema camera” in a mirrorless body. The screen is unusable and I need an external monitor for focus. And one of the major downsides for me, the e-mount system is so limiting and makes you locked in to e-mount glass. I prefer my vintage lenses, but there are times when I need something else. I invested in a couple sony primes (24/50) and a sigma 24-70. I can’t adapt them to any other camera body and that sucks. For that reason I’m thinking of selling the expensive primes because I’m looking to get something other than a Sony for my next camera. All that said I will probably keep my fx3 like you for certain jobs. What is your glass strategy, other than having vintage primes? What e, rf ir pl glass would you get to use for both cameras?
appreciate it! the fx3 is fantastic, yeah I can see taht! There's definitely limitations, buuuuut when stripped down it's a powerhouse The c70 feels much better, as it feels like a step up- a c300 / c500 definitely feels nicer bc of the ergonomics / ports but those are also twice the price of the c70 haha Yeah lensing is a difficult one, I never really enjoyed the sony lenses and just rocked the sigma 24-70 E by itself on the fx3 and that was a workhorse lens Right now- I sold my sigma 24-70 for the sony 20-70 f4 primarily for RUclips / event work I've only used the fx3 for work once and that was general event coverage, so I was okay making that decision For my c70, I just have my vintage lenses converted to EF, I'm in the processs of trying to find the right cine zooms for my setup. I'm not interested in cine primes as I have a kit of primes already I've been toying around with the idea of getting the RF24-70 as that lens is insanely good, and it'll be nice to have AF for RUclips stuff I think adding the RF24-70 + a 2-3 lens kit of cine zooms would be ideal. I'm not too interested in sharing lenses with the fx3 primarily bc the cine zooms will only be used on larger sets and I wouldn't take my fx3 on those Plus, with both having different sensor sizes, I would have to invest in full frame cine zooms to share, which is fine but those get heavier and more expensive Right now- I'm looking at the DZO Pictor 3 lens kit and tokina 25-75, 11-20 and 50-135
This is exactly why I chose the C70 over Komodo. Workflow + Internal ND + Audio Once you taste how practical is to have ND filters at the tip of your fingers, you just can’t go back. At least, for run and gun and documentary scenarios. I love the C70, makes me wonder what could Canon put inside on a C70MarkII
So glad that someone finally admits the sensors in Sony cameras are essentially the same or not so different from each other. Save money and stick with the alpha 7s
Thanks for this video. I’m about to pull the trigger on buying the C70 and one question that comes to mind is the value of the Bright Tangerine cage over the Smallrig. The cost is a lot and I noticed that the Tangerine cage doesn’t have an HDMI secure attachment where the Smallrig does. I am also using an RS3 gimbal and a Sachtler Tripod and i’m curious what your experience was with tripod attachment or gimbal and the cage you use. Thanks again!
glad you enjoyed! That c70 is lovely, you'll enjoy it The BT cage is sooooo worth it, I plan on making a rig video once I've spent more time with it. So far it's well built, robust, and doesn't get loose. I've heard that the small rig gets loose overtime and I cannot have that there actually is an attachment for the HDMI clamp on the BT cage I bought the base plate and the dji riser- I have the dji riser to act more as a quick release to the baseplate so I dont have to unscrew it from the camera. Its a little odd to explain over text but in the video it'll be clear I have a manfrotto tripod that I plan to replace with a flow tech 75 + aktiv 8- but having the baseplate with the quick release makes it so easy to get on and off the tripod The nato top handle from BT is so sturdy and clutch too. I've never used nato before, but I'm sold on it now
@@thomas.kovacik One question i'm curious about with the C70 is the microphone you use to utilize the miniXLR inputs. I've seen a lot of C70 cinematographers using the Deity mics. I currently have a DJI Wireless Lav and A Rode Video Mic Shotgun. Any thoughts and opinions about this Thomas?
@@jonathansnagel definitely! I prefer running the mke600 directly into the mini xlr I tend to stay away from 3.5 mics unless size is a real concern- I use the rode videomic ntg and it works The mke600 is the best mic I've ever used. It's great for ambient, doc, interviews and more
Thanks for making this video. How does the low light performance of the C70 compare to the Black Magic 6k Pro ? And does the C70 work well with a DJI gimbal ? Thank you.
course! I think they're pretty similar The P6K has dual base ISO of 400 / 3200, but I found it was best at 1250 (first ISO on the 2nd circuit) I use my c70 up to about 3200 ISO and use NR and it's pretty good. But it's no sony haha haven't used on a gimbal yet! but my cage setup will make it very easy once I do
Hey man, just found your channel. I’m having overheating issues hybrid shooting my R6 and R5. Do you ever have issues with the C70? How long can you shoot before it overheats or does it never overheat? Thanks!
so rad! yeah there's no overheating on the c70, I've shot in heavy desert sun / heat and it just powers through It's definitely more reliable than the canon mirrorless for video needs, highly recommend the c70!
Now that the C300III had it's RRP dropped to around £6k, there's a lot of folk considering using it as the a-cam and running the c70 on gimbal/lightweight duties.
I watched most of the video and I still can’t really fathom why have two camera systems. I have a fx6 and fx3 so speaking personally I don’t think the c70 is worth the price for what it offers lol compared to the fx6. I also got my fx6 in half of a book bag compartment for travel. But regardless if it works for you it works!
The C70 has the DGO sensor, built in XLRs, internal RAW codecs, can use EF and RF mounts, and is currently cheaper than the FX6 on B&H. Saying all that, they're both worth the price in their own right
@@ryanbishop3586 its also super 35 and canon barely has any s35 rf lenses. its has mini xlr, and the body is shaped terribly and it feels like cheap plastic. my main point was hes an fx3 user so to go the c70 seemed like an odd choice. but nonetheless both excellent cameras
@@MateoToro I've heard the body doesn't feel as robust as other cameras, but I'd rather have mini XLRs on the body, than none at all. And for the S35 sensor, most cinematographers prefer a S35 sensor. And you're right, Canon need to up their game in the RF lens department and both are excellent cameras. We're spoilt for choice these days
haha I get that! I feel I have a unique situation with my workflows and owning both systems makes sense for my personal taste, workflow and clients I work with The fx6 is an incredible camera no doubt, but the c70 fits my needs a bit better for my work (internal raw, rf / ef - I loooove the rf24-70 with IS, it's a great lens, smaller body, audio on body, dgo sensor) I get hired out oftentimes because I'm a sony shooter, and now I'm open to the canon market which I do know a bunch of people who only shoot with canons So having both cameras in the game is helpful with that The c70 fits easier with my camera bag setups, I'm not tied to bringing the top handle / side handle like the fx6 would be I still love that fx6, it was a tough decision to not get one. Plus, it was backordered for ages haha
Great Video! I'm currently using the GH5 and looking to upgrade to a new full-frame camera. I'm torn between the S5iix and the FX3. Do you think the extra cost for the FX3 is worth it? I’ve watched several footage videos from both cameras on RUclips, especially in the music video genre, and I find Sony’s look much more modern and cinematic.
thanks! The S5IIx seems to be really popular, I haven't really looked into it though I'm loving the FX3 and I find it to be perfect for my needs. Plus, lots of productions around me are using sony so there's been times where I get hired out bc I have a fx3 haha. It's definitely more common than Lumix and even Canon
I personally would go FX6 for a perfect pairing with the FX3. You haven’t experienced auto VND yet probably. The c70 is super35 with not as good of low light. If you shoulder rig the FX6 it negates all of the heavier rigging and is super stable and comfortable. As you grow in your video production career you’ll probably find yourself doing more two camera shoots. That’s cool though.. to each his own.
yeah I get that! on paper yes fx6 and fx3 and fx9 all work seamlessly together I've shot a bunch on the fx6 and eVND is cool, but it's not ground breaking for me. I'm cool with / without it Haven't had any issues with low light, I'll crank it up to 3200 iso and it's plenty fine, though it's no FX3 with the 12800 For the majority of my gigs and the bigger jobs I've gotten, it's all been one camera and the fx6 / c70 and Komodo all would be great. I just feel overall the c70 works better for me, ya know? Same reasoning for owning the fx3, for my needs it's perfect Plus, I way prefer the image out of my c70 over the fx6, which that was a huge factor
Love the c70 but my only problem with it is at times the image seems a little TOO soft. It’s lacking a little detail in comparison to my pocket 6k cameras. Sometimes I wish it was a 6k camera shooting a 4k image so it could have just a little more detail. I also wished the screen was a 5 inch tilt screen instead of a flip out…or at least be able to have a second hinge that lets the screen stay in-line with the camera so you could just tilt it up instead of NEEDING to flip it out.
yeah i had that issue at first but been loving a softer image lately. both my fx3 and c70 give me an image i’m happy with, i was never really sold on that pocket 6k but get why people like em yeah that would be nice!
I like the softer image personally. It’s the nd’s and battery life that is so appealing to me. The bmpcc 6k is amazing but I don’t trust the build quality. Fx6 is so great but hard to find and xlr only on the top handle a con for sure.
not yet! I do know that there are certain contax Zeiss lenses that would hit the glass All of my cz lenses so far are cleared! I believe the 35 1.4, 85 1.4, 28 2 all hit
Nice seeing younger video producers understanding the value of practicality. Most of the time all they care about is shooting everything RAW at the highest resolution. Not all clients hire you because they think you’re Steven Spielberg
Appreciate it! Yeah it's fun to look into gear and the newest thing / all the specs
But if it doesn't make my life easier with these projects, then it's useless
I would love a Komodo, but the c70 makes more sense haha
Agree. Hate the wave of Sony ninja prores raw bandwagon when the workflow is shit and no one is even doing anything with prores raw
I shoot sony every day, and while most of the time im happy with ten bit, I'd appreciate it if they started including 12bit internally in new cine cams. Ninja isn't practical for my workflow.
@ChadtheFilipino I thought Prores is easier to codec to work with and ProresRaw was just easier to work with than Craw , Braw or Red RAW?
If most of the content is for RUclips, all of these ultra specs will go unnoticed. If the intended viewing medium is a theater movie screen, then yes, high end specs will make more of a difference. At the end of the day, its the creativity of the creator that makes the biggest impact. Just my opinion, but at the same time there is nothing wrong with using high end gear either. Creating something from nothing should be a joy.
I really enjoy your long-form content man. It’s refreshing in this space.
really appreciate that! it’s hard to keep it at 10min for these videos sometimes, there’s just so much to cover haha
just depends on the topic i guess!
Agreed. Well said
You and the C70 is just a natural fit. Your C70 footage made me look up who did that in the first place.
appreciate it!
Really awesome thought process behind this! Glad you found the best tool for the job.
appreciate it! really happy with the versatility of it, enjoy your videos too!
The formfactor of the C70 is absolutely amazing and I love it.. it just doesn't allow for proper and robust audio inputs.
it's better to record that externally, have something that have dedicated preamps
I love shooting shoulder rigged and owning an FS5m2 right now.. the ergonomics on these cameras are incredible and the ultimate Swiss Army of cinema cameras.
that's a great option! You definitely can't go wrong with it
As someone who recently, and happily, picked up the FX30, I was looking at what camera I may upgrade or add to my gear in the future.
Glad this video helped you out
Owning cameras that work best for your needs is highly recommended vs blindly picking something based off of being in a certain brand
Terrific video, I appreciate your perspective and willingness to share.
My needs are vastly different as a stock video producer but I literally went through all those rabbit holes and came to the same conclusions lol. It was almost weird hearing your breakdown. I got the FX3 at launch and it’s stellar for my workflow and needs. Great vid!
haha love that! crazy how things overlap across workflows
That fx3 is truly incredible, such a great value
Great! I'm C70 user for two years already and I'm still confident it was my best choice. Good Luck!
amazing! it's gotten better over time, which is very unusual for modern cameras! I love mine
Those updates have been just soo gooood, never expected the c70 to get raw. I upload a lut for image reference and record raw, so the lut doesn't get carried on to the final image.
so true! never could've imagined it getting raw, basically throws the c200 to the curb
Thanks
really appreciate the support!
I just watched your FX3 video and now you have me wondering… wtf do I do. 😂😂 love it bro.
hahah love it! Yeahhhh haha, it really just depends
Back when I made that video I couldn't afford a c70 / fx6, so the fx3 was the best option for me
I'm still keeping it, but having a proper cinema camera for work is just so dang nice haha
this was a great video!
Thank you! Very long winded but glad to hear that haha
It's been great for myself as a solo op
The KX looks enticing bc it fixes a lot of issues I had with komodo og, but yeah it's not as ideal for the majority of projects alot of us work on hah. I go back and forth deciding what to do with my c70 and it's just too good.
I wish it was in the style of the c500, but the small footprint makes it a dream for travel gigs
@@thomas.kovacik excellent! Thank you. Got an offer to trade my OG komodo for a C70 and im on the fence
Fantastic point bro. It's like how I feel about the 6k pro and xh2s
appreciate it! yeah each camera has it's preferred environment / workflow that it's geared towards
I can of course take my c70 traveling, but it's gonna be big and annoying and overkill lol
You'll be stoke with it
Both cameras are at the top of their respective markets I feel
I'm a few months in and couldn't be happier- the c70 has been incredible to work with
I know I would be happy with the fx6 as well but having something different has been fun
Love how you saw the c70 for what it is when comparing it to the Komodo for your workflow
So rad that they work well for two camera setups
yeah the 10 stops of ND is pretty clutch for midday shooting, definitely nice to have in the kit
I'm thinking to trade my Komodo for a C70 as well, but to be honest, never seen a really good image from the C70. What can you say about it's image vs Komodo?
@@76tygfgug From my experience - theyre very very close, the red does feel richer in some settings
I've never been disappointed with the footage from the c70, at the end of the day you're trading off something with both cameras, but they are also so incredible that im sure you'd be happy with either
The workflow of the c70 alone kept me from getting a Komodo
@@76tygfgugthe C70 is a tiny sensor in a prosumer body that delivers a very “video” image. Different target altogether from the Komodo. Not to mention the internal ND’s are mediocre. But you have to correct the image so much in post anyway, you can usually clean up the color shifts they cause, especially at higher densities.
@@superfly13161205 pretty sure both are super 35 sensors.
Yeah the c70 feels more well rounded than the p6k, which isn't a bad thing for the p6k
Highly recommend the c70, it's incredible for run n gun / set work!
This was excellent. You answered all the questions Iv'e had for awhile haha! You ought to get some kick backs for all the c70's you're gonna sell
Really enjoyed hearing your thought process behind getting the C70 and your plans for what types of lenses you plan to build your kit with. I personally own an A7IV for my own stuff, but use C70's for most of my professional work! Definitely hard to decide which lenses to invest in haha
appreciate it! Love that, can't go wrong with sony and canon nowadays, especially when you have experience with both for work
yeah I try to not buy many modern lenses bc you never know hah
If I do end up with a FX6 or something I could see the value with owning GM lenses, but often times I shoot with my vintage lenses anyways bc of the look / feel so I get grounded quick when I start thinking about the RF 24-70 or GM lol
Why didn’t you go for the FX6 as a Sony user. I’ve an FX3 and bought an FX6 to keep using my lenses.
@@shuggfilmzandstudio2354 I explain it in the video! I have one Sony lens so I wasn’t committed
Plus, I use my ef vintage lenses on any camera I use
The c70 is a better fit for my commercial jobs
honestly, as an old filmmaker, everything I have seen of the c70 compared to the Sony or the Komodo, the c70 images look much more like studio images when they filmed movies on 35mm film cameras...far less contrasty and digitally sharp than the Komodo or Sony....it has more pleasing rolloff and softer "filmic" image.....Im here at the end of 2023 about to purchase one to shoot my next feature on as an A-cam to go all in and test it out...
I've shot good / bad things with every camera and it all came down to lighting, composition, framing, movement and so much more
I agree, as long as you're cool with the workflow with that camera then go for it haha
Been following Sam for many years now. Loved his youtube stuff as well. Glad I found yours!
So rad, he's great! Appreciate it!
I'll have to check those out! Wonder how that'll work when stacking glass like that
thanks for the rec!
That fx3 is incredible, dang yeah that backorder time was so gnarly to watch
the c70 is great to consider, if you're using all modern e lenses, it may get tough but sometimes people are willing to buy lenses for both systems!
Thank you for sharing your insights and this comparison! I am looking for an "A" cam myself, and it was definitely useful to be able to observe your thinking patterns - thank you again! Great Video!
appreciate it! Heck yes, that's the entire goal! Glad you enjoyed it
I had a similar mind set for the reason I bought a c70.
Thanks for your consideration.
thanks! Yeah the c70 is like the modern c200
For 2000 the c200 crushes, if you shoot RAW. You'll also need to grab those CF cards which can get expensive - c70 uses sd
the c70 will give you more options for lenses with the RF mount, better battery life, better raw codec (smaller file size) and 10bit non raw files
the c200 could be a great move as the ef lenses are cheaper, but you'd be shooting 4k 12bit raw or 8bit 420 1080p which is rough sometimes
I would say c70 for future proofing and ease of use / file sizes. You could save money with that overtime
The dgo sensor is also incredible
@@thomas.kovacik Thanks! I ended up finding a deal on a used C200 for $1500, which I think is a good in between step for me. Not sure if I will shoot raw yet, as I hate dealing with huge file sizes.. we shall see. Anyway, the chepeast I found a C70 was something $5000, so for now the C200 will be pretty sweet, I think. Cheers!
Bruhhhh love it! The work you did on c70 brought me here. The magenta shift for me 🤤
haha appreciate it!
I bought a C70 two weeks ago.
Absolutely love it❤
so nice! such a great camera
These two cameras are great and I like that you enjoy them too %)
appreciate it!
yeah those old Sony's were brutal haha, the color was just so odd and the log curves didn't work well with 8 bit- I think it added a bad taste to a lot of people's perspective on sony when the new generation came out (a7iv, a7siii, fx3, etc)
Yeah that red setup is gorgeous but you're right the workflow definitely gets deeper with it
Love it! I feel the c70 is a great choice for you, haha love it you got a fx3 too!
Both are incredible, and it's so nice to have them depending on the needs. Sometimes I do prefer working with the fx3 bc of size haha
Thanks for watching and sharing that!
I have literally been going back and forth with buying the Komodo. Thank you for this! I went to film tools yesterday and they said the c70 would be perfect if I do a lot of documentary work. So I want to test it out
I felt that! the Komodo is great but not as ideal for run n gun doc work
The c70 is incredible, I highly recommend it! The new RAW codec is so good
Hi Brittney! Run-and-gun, documentary style is what I shoot 95% of time for my work and I can confirm that the C70 works great for my team's workflow!
Brittney! I enjoyed watching your videos when you were agonizing over the c200, bmpcc cams and other models. Eventually you settled in the Sony ecosystem but I always felt like you had this great workflow with the c200.
Give in to the darkside! Come to team Canon....lol.
@@getfmlr You know what's funny. I'm actually thinking of purchasing the c70!
@@BrittneyJanae been subbed to your channel so I await the good news ! 😁
I also wanted to love Fuji GFX for my photography work yet Canon just makes so much more sense for what I do while keeping my kit minimal.
love it, yeah that GFX is a great camera! but again it has strengths and weaknesses- a r5 + gfx 100s would be a great workhorse combo
But for now, yeah the canon can do it all until you need an upgrade or something different
Interesting. I went the opposite direction. These two are a good set. I’m not getting rid of the C70, but using FX3 as B-cam and A-cam for a lighter set up in simple shoots to cut down weight. I always prefer the colors of the C70, but it’s heavy for gimbal use. Both are good.
haha love that! Both are so solid
It really is so convenient, I can't stress enough how great it is to work with haha
yeah all three of those cameras would be great! can't go wrong with any of them.
Really enjoyed this video and your perspective man 👊🏻
thanks spencer! really appreciate it
Nice explanation, there are so many great choices for filmmakers. Thanks for choosing Bright Tangerine for your C70.
Thank you! Great time to be a filmmaker
Course! Will always rock your guys’ accessories for every kit I have
Awesome video!
I can see myself using this thing for a very long time
Yeah I wonder what sony would do! it would make sense to have that ENVD to make it fit better with the fx line
false color + shutter angle would be so ideal too!
C70 + R5C is the best combo for run n gun and still need some photos or second camera angle sometime.
totally agree, the Komodo is definitely a niche setup
yeah the c70 / r5c combo is pretty solid!
I love the practical approach. While I do want a C70, I’m a hybrid shooter as we do both professional headshots and product photography as well as client branding and promotional videos I think I’m going get the R5C first.
And probably in the next year, get the C70
Looking forward to more c70 settings, rigging, tests, techniques and work flow videos
Haven't used my c70 handheld enough since I have an r5 with a stabilized sensor. But since that makes ultra wide lenses wobbly I've been wanting to try out the c70 handheld more. Would love to know your techniques and settings when going handheld and if you use digital stabilizing
appreciate it, me too! Lots on the way
Yeah the r5 warping is an odd one, not sure if they've fixed it at all but I remember seeing how bad it was on wide angle lenses haha
for the c70 I dont use digital stabilization- but practicing handheld shooting is key. Movements are important, weight of the camera, and if you really need to smoothen the jitters, getting RF glass with IS built in is key
I plan on doing a video about handheld shooting, I'm really stoked on that one
@@thomas.kovacikSmoothen?
@@superfly13161205 yeah cameras get micro jitters when theyre light. Having IS in lens, or stabilization in body will help with that
Same with adding loads of weight to your camera kit, having a heavier setup to hold doesn't move as much as a lighter setup - thus less micro jitters
You rock!! Thanks for making this video! I'm considering all of these cameras and being steered towards c70 as I already have a R3 for stills. Thanks brah!
appreciate it! Wow that combo is going to be great, that R3 is pretty amazing too
About to pour some eggnog, have too many Christmas cookies and enjoy this content. Let’s GOOOO!!!!
haha heck yeah! Merry Christmas
Yeah I tend to stay away from the ninja, I've heard it's good but I'd rather just keep the kit small on cameras like that and shoot with internal codecs
yeah the c70 is just so dang good, you need media, a battery, maybe a mic and a lens and you're set haha
i do a lot of int'l solo travel, which is why i bought the fx3. it fits on my peak design tripod, it fits in my backpack or clips onto my peak design clip on backpack strap. It's such a light, small footprint when traveling.
That being said, it seems like the C70 with built-in audio and nds, would make for an easier experience to make high quality docs out there. Having used both, would you still use the fx3 for int'l solo travel? Or would you bring the C70 with you now? The size /weight / conspicuousness seems like the main deterrent
love the fx3! it’s such a versatile camera
i’m still keeping the fx3 for travel! especially personal
if i’m doing a paid travel shoot, i may consider the c70
it’s definitely a bit bigger and draws more eyes, though it being small for a cinema camera
the fx3 was always my go-to youtube / travel camera. it’s overkill for most, but it’s perfect for my needs haha
I’m kind of where you were a year ago. Just bought an fx3 after squeezing everything I could out of an A7iii. Hopefully 1-3 years down the line I can move up to a more robust camera system
heck yes the fx3 is incredible! Master it and get good nd filters / accessories and you can live with that for a very very long time
Cinema cameras are just ideal for certain scenarios, that fx3 is a great mix of both mirrorless / cinema- I love it
@@thomas.kovacik yeah I generally shoot high volume quick content for social media and the more agile and compact the better. I have a nice 6 stop ND so it works well in most outdoor Bright scenarios
definitely! the fx3 is perfect for that
love it I do the same, i have a 3 and 6 stop fixed that I cycle through
Would you choose the Sony fx3 or the r6 mark ii for documentary/vlog content? For some reason, I enjoy using canon cameras more than Sony. Great Content
Hmm I haven't used that r6 mark 2 yet! the fx3 is a workhorse though, and it's tiny
That r6 mark2 looks interesting bc it's way cheaper, and they have a photo / video setting now
Great video, I think I’m about to pick up an FX3 to supplement my F55. Totally random, but where did you get that coffee tray at 34:29? I’ve been looking for one for my Hario v60. Thanks!
Thanks! The FX3 is so good
Not sure! That was at a coffee shop I was filming for- Maru coffee, send em a message and see!

* and i did it without skipping through the video haha. Just starting to watch the part with the C70 actually haha
Thank you! haha I cut all the breaths out
I think canon has some new cameras on the way so I'd wait if you wanna spring for the new one. Not sure when it'll come out / ship though
If you need one now, I'd get one still! it's a great camera and super cheap, and you can run it as a B im sure to the newer ones
Hoping the new canon's have dual base iso, 6k sensor, CFE cards, sdi and some other cool features
thanks for the kind words!
@@thomas.kovacik thanks for you answer! Yeah, 6k, dual iso would be awesome🙌 I'll be patient haha
I actually dont mind FF vs S35 anymore, I love using both
Mini xlr has been fine- I love having it in body unlike the fx6 - allows me to keep the kit small and I can use any top handle I want
yeah the RAW is a nice lil bonus, I know it's not like R3D but being able to adjust WB / ISO is pretty cool right?
Yeah the cable less workflow is so ideal- I love the sony b10 mic that goes into the hotshoe- canon's version of that looks pretty weak haha
The fx6 is a fantastic camera no doubt
@@thomas.kovacik if you could choose only one camera between fx3 and c70 which would it be? Which do you feel has the better image quality?
FX3 For versatility, c70 for image quality
Would depend on what I need it to do
If I didn’t do RUclips or care about travel filming, 100% c70 every time
@@thomas.kovacik thanks for replying! Would you mind making an updated how you expose for clog 2 on c70? Also would love to see how you graded and edited Sebastian Lletget / A New Chapter (Canon C70 + Contax Zeiss) video.
I'm choosing between the FX3 and C70 but I keep hearing FX3 has the best autofocus on the market. AF is super-important for me.
they're both solid! the c70 af is no slouch either. Both cameras are similar but different too. There's multiple reasons why I had both
@@thomas.kovacik Yeah but after I posted that I kept watching your videos and I saw that you sold it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Doesn’t mean it’s a bad camera, my needs changed
@@thomas.kovacik 1 month later, I just purchased a C70!
30:26 to those who still trying to find the camera they want … rent it out and try it to see if it makes your workflow easier or more cumbersome
A lot of VNDs are okay to a point and then they go crazy when you try to stop them down too much my advice is in the future as you do more commercial work make sure you invest in solid IRNDs.
thank you! Yeah VNDs aren't the move
I finally found nisi IRND 3 and 6 stop circular filters - these have filled the gap well for internal nd
I use them on my fx3, and will use them on any camera I get in my hands that needs NDs
Matte boxes are ideal with nicer filters, but sometimes the size / workflow isn't ideal for run n gun stuff
I wish I had those nisi IRNDs when I shot on the pocket 6k, man that would've helped a ton lol
Yeah I totally recommend adapting different lenses to your camera! allows for more looks and a different way of shooting with manual focus
Cheers!
Do you recommend the C70 to film movie?
Definitely!
Glad you understand where I'm coming from, lots of people get upset that I didn't go sony bc I already own one haha
Sooooo it really depends
I prefer canon for my client work, there's just this depth to the image and the rolloff of the highlights it's just gorgeous
For RUclips stuff, the canon is fine but I for some reason prefer my sony. it's hard to explain but maybe I'm just used to seeing myself with the sony. I really didn't like the canon r5 / r6 footage for some reason, the DR didn't feel as good as my fx3 or c70, so for a mirrorless setup forsure sony
BRAW is great, but I never truly fell in love with it. I really enjoyed it but I think the canon image fits my style more. I do want to try the Ursa 12k at some point, it seems really sick and having internal ND would be helpful (I shot on the p6k and used vnd filters back in the day)
All 3 are amazing, especially nowadays and you can't go wrong
If I had to rank for client work
Canon, BRAW, sony
Sony has always felt a bit "plasticy" to me, unless I use vintage lenses to help the image
That said, I shoot with my fx3 / c70 for my RUclips videos now and they match up pretty well!
hope that's helpful haha
@@thomas.kovacik super helpful, and I appreciate how thorough you were. One more thing I want to ask you about:
I’ve been shopping for a camera that can allow me to have stunning high end images for short films, but when client work arrives I can also rely on it to deliver there. That’s why I was so stuck between c70 and Komodo. Komodo seems to have better image quality, but canon has those things like you mentioned in your video, internal audio NDs, stuff like that.
For what I’m looking to do, I feel like the c70 is the better option, and is definitely
Capable of producing a great image for short films…right? Or, do I spend a bit extra, and use the Komodo for both since the image quality is technically better, and it still has autofocus.
Some advice I’ve seen is to get the cheaper camera and get high end lenses, like Dzofilm. Would you say C70 is the better route for what I’m looking for, or maybe the Komodo might fit better? Your two cents would be appreciated
Sounds like the c70 is the move
Personally I’m not the biggest fan of the RED image, and their cameras kinda require a small team
Sure you can solo op it but having to swap filters, black shade and deal with media doesn’t sound fun solo haha
The c70’s image is gorgeous and there’s loads of codecs for media requirements
I was enticed by the red but after almost 6 months of owning the c70 I’m so happy with it
I could see the need for a c500 or c300 mostly for the build / SDI for bigger sets but that won’t be a move for a little bit
The c70 is super versatile, it’s great
100% invest in good lenses, DZO lenses are good but they’re heavy and long
Vintage glass is solid, the RF lenses are really good too
@@thomas.kovacik do you have any particular brand you recommend for cine lenses on the c70?
@@philrodfilms prob DZO or sigma, tokina too
I’m gonna buy some tokina zooms at some point I think, they’re a bit more recognizable and trusted- same with sigma
DZO is good but still new to the scene and not as “legit” haha
All of your words in this video make perfect sense to me, I’m kinda falling into the same category, looking for a best all around compact cinema camera, FX6 could’ve been my best bet but the handle/only audio input is definitely a deal breaker. URSA mini is a great camera, but again, too bulky for me, c70 is not my type, not a fan of canon’s color science, so, I think I’ll just wait for a while, hopefully Sony come up with a new FX line fix the fx6 issue, or blackmagic to assemble a cube like camera with a better rolling shutter. The pain of using bmpcc6k/6k pro I relate so much the Frankenstein ergonomic and the power consumption are just driving me nuts.
appreciate it! yeah there's lots of nuance between cameras and styles, it's tough when all of them dont line up enough for your needs!
what about a Komodo? that would fix the cube issue of the pocket 6k
Yeah the p6k rigging / power was such a bummer for my needs haha, it's a gorgeous camera but having to carry 6+ LPE6 batteries isn't ideal often times haha
Big fan of their color.
love it! those contax lenses are great
the fx9 is definitely an industry standard! lots of productions prefer that camera
@@thomas.kovacik I finally bought a FX6 and I am happy with my decision so far.
So rad! It’s a great camera!
Love how you introduced the Contax vintage primes w/ the speedbooster on your c70! IMO the Canon DGO sensor shines significantly when paired with vintage glass especially with old Canon FD lenses!
Thanks! Yeah this sensor is so special, I’ve been shooting 99% of the time with my Contax lenses
Man I need to give those FDs a try again!
Having a large range of used EF glass for the C70 that provide both incredible image quality and reliable autofocus at generally half the price of the full frame/competitors lenses, I've found often makes the overall cost the same or even less than those investing in another system.
appreciate it! the c70 is just so well rounded
100% agree with the EF / 0.71x workflow
I dont use modern EF lenses with the c70, but I have a full kit of vintage lenses that are EF converted. pairing that with the 0.71x adapter has been a great move!
In terms of image quality, do you find yourself preferring the fx6 or the c70? Great video!
definitely the c70! there’s just something going on with that sensor
that’s not to say the fx6 is far off either
the fx6 just feels very close to my fx3, like there’s no major upgrade with it - though you get a nicer codec
i love my fx3 footage especially with vintage glass, i feel the sony glass is one part of the cause for odd colors some people get.
the canon RF glass on the c70 is perfect too
@@thomas.kovacik Interesting, I find the fx6 noticeably better than the fx3 (albeit similar) due to the lack of internal sharpening, I feel the fx6 has more of an organic feel to it.
Having a significantly better image was nice to get
Thank you! yeah that new raw update is pretty insane, doing testing to see how it compares to xfavc / hevc which I used back then
Cheers!
To be fair it finally came in stock the day I bought my c70.. but I'm not bummed haha
really appreciate that, yeah that's the entire point of this video! To help break the norms and really dig down and see the reasons why you should or shouldn't buy something!
Thanks for watching!
dude this helped me out so much! thank you so much
amazing! Glad it was helpful
Well Gareth Edwards did shoot his first feature with the old EX3 with a 35mm Letus adaptor and some cheap Nikon primes, so maybe shooting on a modest Sony camera again appealed to his indie roots.
fantastic video! wondering if you sway a certain side if your main work is on IG. trying to focus on IG Reel image quality and feel like i sometimes see really crisp sony videos and not as much canon.
thanks! yeah a bunch of my work actually lives outside of IG- on RUclips, client's website's, amazon pages, etc
The c70 was my go-to for any heavy production unless they request fx3. I felt more comfortable using the c70 for those sets
For smaller jobs the fx3 absolutely crushes, it's so dang versatile. There's also a reason why I sold the c70 and have kept the fx3 for 2-3 years now haha
Right now the KX / FX3 is my setup and it's been so solid. Shooting with the fx3 next week for my biggest job yet- primarily bc they requested sony hah
That said, you can make great / bad stuff with any camera haha. Find something that fits your workflow, needs, budget and preferences. The fx3 is forsure my fav for quick IG stuff, but it's tough to beat the IQ on canon / red
@@thomas.kovacik really appreciate the insight my guy! got any recs for ND filters on the fx3 specifically?
Enjoy
appreciate it! yeah it’s been working really well on my projects so far, i have a few coming up that’ll really put it to work
the firmware updates have been crazy! would’ve never expected canon to do this
it’s such a solid setup for 90% of users- i love mirrorless cameras as they’re great for personal videos but i could never fully rely on it on certain sets
internal ND / audio is so key!
totally agree, i just wrapped a project where they rented 2x fx6’s so i know that overtime i’ll be shooting on many brands which is fun!
I know a lot of people market themselves as 'owner operators' and just have their day rate... they charge 800-1500/day and hand over footage at the end of the day (or multiple times a day).
yeah sony makes some odd decisions sometimes! like releasing the FX3 with a diff low base iso than the fx6 haha
the audio options are rough on the fx6 bc you’re locked into the handle- it’s a blessing and curse
the handle is nice but for travel and stuff where you need a minimal kit if you need audio, you either have to bring a field recorder and mess with that, bring a sound op, or make room for the top handle
which is fine for some, but for lower budget run n gun things, i’m not bringing tons of gear so space matters
i tend to just shoot with what i have haha, not many clients request stuff besides directors monitors haha
i’m keeping the sony for jobs where i have been hired out to shoot sony (primarily hired out by the dp to shoot with the same kit)
i’ll still just market myself the same, but i’ll throw options for gear rentals to the production- market price for c70 kit + lenses / fx3 kit + lenses
the jobs i have coming up don’t really care too much about brand, it’s mostly having a high quality image (internal ND or matte box, with internal RAW)
the size of the c70 will be nice to build around with a teradek / easy rig
@@thomas.kovacik Totally agreed! So, are you using a particular website to market yourself as an owner operator?
nope! just word of mouth through friends / network
instagram, my website and youtube are all portfolios too in their own right
@@thomas.kovacik Fantastic!
appreciate it Riley! Haha so rad! Yeah it's a great camera
Funny enough, 1 year later- I'm looking to replace it with a Komodo X haha
@@thomas.kovacik Oh very cool!!
Great video I love how you really narrowed down to the T of what you need. I need to do this same thing when it comes to my cooking videos. I have a question how come you didn’t constitute R5C? Was it battery life, and ND filters?
thank you! The r5c wasn't a thing when I first bought my FX3, it came out a handful of months later
The main thing about the R5C for me is ND filters and battery life yeah
To me, it's not much more of an upgrade from my FX3 - though it has 8k raw and a 45mp sensor and it's a true hybrid camera with the cinema operating system and such
The fx3 just fits my needs better for that type of camera, I dont need photos so I'm not missing that
The c70, for another $700 was a much better offering for me
I've seen people switch to the r5c, so it looks like a viable camera for some!
2x 600s would give you plenty to light for ambient / set and use the 300d for close ups and such
I feel with the cooking show you may want speed / good battery life / audio built in
The c70 / fx6 are definitely key contenders I think
Dude thanks a lot for this video. I´m literally in the exact same position and this video is just incredible valuable!
course! Stoked to hear that it's helpful
All the best to ya.
so rad! I haven't personally but you could fly it on the RS3 Pro I think
I never use them for my own work, I love handheld / tripod
Zooms are great too! if you want a small kit the RF24-70 is a great option, or EF24-105 with adapter
Course! Lots more c70 videos on the way
@@thomas.kovacik Thank you. I have both those lenses. Bonus. I just clicked the bell for new posts.
There's definitely limitations, buuuuut when stripped down it's a powerhouse
The c70 feels much better, as it feels like a step up- a c300 / c500 definitely feels nicer bc of the ergonomics / ports but those are also twice the price of the c70 haha
Yeah lensing is a difficult one, I never really enjoyed the sony lenses and just rocked the sigma 24-70 E by itself on the fx3 and that was a workhorse lens
Right now- I sold my sigma 24-70 for the sony 20-70 f4 primarily for RUclips / event work
I've only used the fx3 for work once and that was general event coverage, so I was okay making that decision
For my c70, I just have my vintage lenses converted to EF, I'm in the processs of trying to find the right cine zooms for my setup. I'm not interested in cine primes as I have a kit of primes already
I've been toying around with the idea of getting the RF24-70 as that lens is insanely good, and it'll be nice to have AF for RUclips stuff
I think adding the RF24-70 + a 2-3 lens kit of cine zooms would be ideal. I'm not too interested in sharing lenses with the fx3 primarily bc the cine zooms will only be used on larger sets and I wouldn't take my fx3 on those
Plus, with both having different sensor sizes, I would have to invest in full frame cine zooms to share, which is fine but those get heavier and more expensive
Right now- I'm looking at the DZO Pictor 3 lens kit and tokina 25-75, 11-20 and 50-135
This is exactly why I chose the C70 over Komodo. Workflow + Internal ND + Audio
Once you taste how practical is to have ND filters at the tip of your fingers, you just can’t go back.
At least, for run and gun and documentary scenarios.
I love the C70, makes me wonder what could Canon put inside on a C70MarkII
yea that's why hollywood doesn't use them or auto focus
want a full frame version of C70
@@sjd4532 now it exist, c80 xD
That c70 is lovely, you'll enjoy it
The BT cage is sooooo worth it, I plan on making a rig video once I've spent more time with it. So far it's well built, robust, and doesn't get loose. I've heard that the small rig gets loose overtime and I cannot have that
there actually is an attachment for the HDMI clamp on the BT cage
I bought the base plate and the dji riser- I have the dji riser to act more as a quick release to the baseplate so I dont have to unscrew it from the camera. Its a little odd to explain over text but in the video it'll be clear
I have a manfrotto tripod that I plan to replace with a flow tech 75 + aktiv 8- but having the baseplate with the quick release makes it so easy to get on and off the tripod
The nato top handle from BT is so sturdy and clutch too.
I prefer running the mke600 directly into the mini xlr
I tend to stay away from 3.5 mics unless size is a real concern- I use the rode videomic ntg and it works
The mke600 is the best mic I've ever used. It's great for ambient, doc, interviews and more
About to pulp that same trigger soon. :)
Love it dude!

Thanks for making this video.
How does the low light performance of the C70 compare to the Black Magic 6k Pro ?
And does the C70 work well with a DJI gimbal ?
Thank you.
course! I think they're pretty similar
The P6K has dual base ISO of 400 / 3200, but I found it was best at 1250 (first ISO on the 2nd circuit)
I use my c70 up to about 3200 ISO and use NR and it's pretty good. But it's no sony haha
haven't used on a gimbal yet! but my cage setup will make it very easy once I do
@@thomas.kovacik Thank you ! Much appreciated. Keep the videos coming. Your channel is A+
would you say the fx3 would be a good camera for music videos?
yeah i think so! if you’re doing larger budget stuff RED seems to be the most popular though
Hey man, just found your channel. I’m having overheating issues hybrid shooting my R6 and R5. Do you ever have issues with the C70? How long can you shoot before it overheats or does it never overheat? Thanks!
so rad!
yeah there's no overheating on the c70, I've shot in heavy desert sun / heat and it just powers through
It's definitely more reliable than the canon mirrorless for video needs, highly recommend the c70!
Now that the C300III had it's RRP dropped to around £6k, there's a lot of folk considering using it as the a-cam and running the c70 on gimbal/lightweight duties.
yep! those price drops are incredible
makes for a great duo with the c70 / c300 as they share the same sensor, pretty rad!
I feel I have a unique situation with my workflows and owning both systems makes sense for my personal taste, workflow and clients I work with
The fx6 is an incredible camera no doubt, but the c70 fits my needs a bit better for my work (internal raw, rf / ef - I loooove the rf24-70 with IS, it's a great lens, smaller body, audio on body, dgo sensor)
I get hired out oftentimes because I'm a sony shooter, and now I'm open to the canon market which I do know a bunch of people who only shoot with canons
So having both cameras in the game is helpful with that
The c70 fits easier with my camera bag setups, I'm not tied to bringing the top handle / side handle like the fx6 would be
I still love that fx6, it was a tough decision to not get one. Plus, it was backordered for ages haha
Great Video! I'm currently using the GH5 and looking to upgrade to a new full-frame camera. I'm torn between the S5iix and the FX3. Do you think the extra cost for the FX3 is worth it? I’ve watched several footage videos from both cameras on RUclips, especially in the music video genre, and I find Sony’s look much more modern and cinematic.
thanks! The S5IIx seems to be really popular, I haven't really looked into it though
I'm loving the FX3 and I find it to be perfect for my needs.
That’s cool though.. to each his own.
yeah I get that! on paper yes fx6 and fx3 and fx9 all work seamlessly together
I've shot a bunch on the fx6 and eVND is cool, but it's not ground breaking for me. I'm cool with / without it
Haven't had any issues with low light, I'll crank it up to 3200 iso and it's plenty fine, though it's no FX3 with the 12800
For the majority of my gigs and the bigger jobs I've gotten, it's all been one camera and the fx6 / c70 and Komodo all would be great. I just feel overall the c70 works better for me, ya know?
Same reasoning for owning the fx3, for my needs it's perfect
Plus, I way prefer the image out of my c70 over the fx6, which that was a huge factor
@@thomas.kovacik I appreciate your videos and thanks for responding!
Love the c70 but my only problem with it is at times the image seems a little TOO soft. It’s lacking a little detail in comparison to my pocket 6k cameras. Sometimes I wish it was a 6k camera shooting a 4k image so it could have just a little more detail.
I also wished the screen was a 5 inch tilt screen instead of a flip out…or at least be able to have a second hinge that lets the screen stay in-line with the camera so you could just tilt it up instead of NEEDING to flip it out.
yeah i had that issue at first but been loving a softer image lately. both my fx3 and c70 give me an image i’m happy with, i was never really sold on that pocket 6k but get why people like em
yeah that would be nice!
I like the softer image personally. It’s the nd’s and battery life that is so appealing to me.
The bmpcc 6k is amazing but I don’t trust the build quality. Fx6 is so great but hard to find and xlr only on the top handle a con for sure.
Excellent breakdown of pros and cons.
thank you!
Outstanding video. We’ll-reasoned decision.
thank you!
Great video. I got the r6, r5c and the c70. That's my setup (minus all the add-ons) for my work.
thank you!
that’s a dialed kit right there
great read
you didn't mentioned manual focus with RF lenses.... and their focus by wire
I did in a recent video, they have a setting in the menu to make it feel linear- definitely helps!
Have you used the canon speed booster with Leica R lenses? any issues with the rear element hitting the speed booster glass?
not yet! I do know that there are certain contax Zeiss lenses that would hit the glass
All of my cz lenses so far are cleared! I believe the 35 1.4, 85 1.4, 28 2 all hit
You made the right choice.
After about 6 months, I can't agree more
