    Great video guys! I genuinely think there's an argument for picking up both of these cameras and imagine they'd probably work well together in terms of A/B camera setups. It's a real quandry as just as I think I'm set on on over the other, I remember that one feature that would make me lean more the other way! This video definitely helped though.

    I had an R6 and dabbled for months on the Canon C70 until the R5C came out, I tested the R5C for a day and C70, the DR is the shadows on C70 is unbelievably good and built in ND's can't be beat. I decided to keep my R6 and settle for C70 and couldn't be happier, can't say it's a perfect A/B combo but I barely use a multi cam set up and a dedicate camera for motions is incredible!

The R5C looks wonderful and if I did not already have the R5 I probably (?) would have gotten it, but in the end I have zero desire for it now since I have most of the bases covered. CHeers!

    One minor difference I came across was in relation to Auto ISO: Both cameras have an auto ISO option, but with the C70 auto ISO is disabled if you're using CLOG2/CLOG3. The R5C still allows auto ISO when using CLOG3.

    The cinema OS was 100% designed assuming 14v+ batteries where battery efficiency was of little concern. Contrast that to the photo dev team, who had to squeeze as much possible out of smaller batteries. This is why the R5C battery life is trash in video and pretty decent in stills. Canon was dumb not to just make one optimized OS for the platform. The R5C needs to have video features put back into the photo mode to. At least give us the option to shoot video in the mode with the superior battery life and AF. I'd buy it then.

    Great video! I'm completely mind blown by the R5C... as someone who comes from the 5D Mark II it is a huge step up but I've learned in advance before even purchasing it. The R5C is completely nuts for stills! I tried the 5D Mark IV and the Canon R6 extensively but it does NOT compare IMHO. I am currently using it for events, indoors, outdoors and even super fast motorsport action such as rallyes and track days. It just keeps up with everything, a monster. For video I can't really judge but I've used it in more than suboptimal conditions (very low light) and it blew me away! I'm using it as the one and only for video and photo with the 5D as backup not to always having to change the 70-200mm to the R5C. I've not ran into any issues with changing from photo to video and vice versa even when changing fast ist crucial to capture a moment in photo mode coming from video. If you get the hang of how long it takes you're always able to do it just in time.
    The one and only issue I have with the R5C is that the batteries in video just drains so quick... if you have a drink and forget to turn it off it already took off a bar from the battery. Also pretty annoying is that the battery, even when just charged, seems to show a missing bar in no time. Even with the BGR10 grip. I run 4 original batteries and I've come to the conclusion that if you want a full day or say 2 full event days with a mix of photo and video you'd need minimum 6 and at best 8 batteries in total. Because charging these things on a car charger (12v -> 220v outlet) takes ages.
    And to all new R5C users that might not know like I did: DO NOOOOOOT! I repeate do NOT press ----> Initialize Media

      Yeah, technically you could buy the ECOFLOW River 2 for example and charge without running the car with engine on. But since you are still using the original Canon single port battery charger it still takes forever. Best thing is really to get a battery dummy like the SMALLRIG D-Tap to LP-E6NH with the Smallrig part number 4252. It does not support 8K 60p though and sometimes shows empty or low battery when running it with a V-Mount 99wh battery. Weird.@@peterenables714

  • @Malick333
    @Malick333 2 года назад +9

    R5C owner. Honestly, if you need amazing stills and video in one body, R5c is the way to go. I just finished a short film, and don’t be concerned about battery life. Using a smaller power bank (mounted discretely or in your pocket or on your belt) will resolve all long term shooting. Get two PD banks, or a bigger one, as needed.
    Gerald Undone has also showed us how to squeeze more dynamic range out, which is significantly better than the R5. Besides the image, my favorite thing about the R5c is how small of a form factor you can go when needing to be discrete. You just can’t do this with the C70. Then I can bulk the R5c up when needed too with grips and a boom and rails and whatever.

    • @jessejayphotography

      I have a R5C as well. Haven’t used in on anything larger but I love it! The DR jump from R5 is definitely there and things like false color and waveform are killer in a small package. I have RF lenses so C70 with RF just felt wrong. Hopefully we see a C70 with a FF DGO in the future. Would be my dream camera.

    I bought both! The C70 is the workhorse and the R5C is the B cam and gimbal cam. They work well together as they share the same colour profiles so easy to match. Using C70 as an A cam for interviews is good because the slightly softer image works well for close ups of faces and its better camera to run audio while the R5C is great on a wider moving shot to the side. Im also looking forward to using it as a stills camera in my spare time.

  • @onlysublime

    built-in NDs are fantastic and I wish the R5C had it. However, I use Kolari's magnetic ND filters. They actually go inside the camera and work with RP, R6, R5 and R5C (and I think R). So they go in-between the lens and the camera. There's no vignetting because they're bigger than the sensor. And you can swap lenses while leaving the filter in-place. I love these filters! I thought about getting the Canon drop-in filter system but I'm moving away from EF lenses. In fact, with my Kolari, since they fit between the camera and the lens, I can use my EF lenses (via my EF/RF adapter for with control ring) or my RF glass.

    As of now, the C70 is $700 USD more than the R5C in the States. I am interested in both. Though as a filmmaker, I do lean towards the C70 with the built in ND filters. The only thing holding me back is that Canon will not allow 3rd party lens development for the RF mount. Yes, I can use an adapter. But, I would prefer the native lens mount. And 3rd party choices is the best way to make the decision more affordable.

    It would drive me nuts, if i would have to assemble the rig to a hybrid camera again and again, if i would have to switch a lot between video and photo tasks. I will always grab a dedicated video camera for videos, and a photo camera for photos...because they are built for exactly that task. A dedicated video camera simply have buttons and functions, even a hybrid camera, like the R5 C doesn´t have. And with that visible rolling shutter problem, both cameras have, i would even be happy with a Canon XF605, where i wouldn`t need any cage or additional viewfinder and so on, which would turn the small camerabody into an head from an moose with moose antlers. I love run and gun ready cameras...and the formfactor both worlds have (photo and video).

    Something that a lot of videos never cover when comparing the C70 to anything else is the build quality. It is not very good.
    Aspects of the camera feel flimsy, particularly the screen, others break easily (I had to send mine back to Canon twice to get repaired). At first they said it had some weather-sealing, but that wasn't accurate (and has since been removed from their marketing); even a bit of rain will brick your camera. The C70 is the only camera in the Canon cinema lineup that isn't built like a rugged workhorse, and that includes the R5 C. However, a camera with this level of quality at this price has to have a compromise, so I commend Canon for giving users the option.
    I'd liken it to an F1 car: the performance is unbeatable, but it is very delicate.

    R5C for those that need long recording times or use it in hot climates and also produce a lot of images

    • @lightningblender
      @lightningblender 2 года назад +1

      @@Miguel_Molina Different price category, R5 & R5C & C70 are quite close. R3 is +1k at least (on top of C70, which already is the most expensive out of the three)
      The R3 is nice, stacked and all, it's similar to the R5 in AF but 8K vs 6K RAW is quite some difference, 33% additional digital zoom while still delivering 4K can be a deal breaker. What the R3 has above the R5s is a MUCH bigger battery and 60p RAW without external PD. For wildlife a fully sealed camera is important so my choice would be:
      If you've got cash to throw around: R3 and the wide RF-super-tele. Then you can get amazing battery life and fill the frame. If you're on a "budget", the R5 is the next candidate. For the rest, see above.

      For one. They give these little tiny updates to their alpha line. They give a big update to the fx6. Purposely skipping the fx3.
      They have competition from the gh6 and R5C. Sony needs to do something. And it was a great time without pissing off the a7s3 owners too much because they just gave them a tiny little morsel.

    I really want an R5C to retire my BMPCC6K and Canon 80D. I find myself not creating nearly as much art anymore simply because taking out the BMPCC is a huge hassle, and my 80D is just outdated. I would much rather have something that can take pictures and video, however I am largely primarily a filmmaker. Dynamic range is super important... and that blackmagic color is just out of this world. Do you think I can get similar dynamic range from the R5C in raw recording as I do with the BMPCC? I really do want to be able to make very moody looking films with the R5C. I love sharpness as well, so I would likely utilize 8k all the time. Really, my only concern is dynamic range. Worried about sacrificing that... Your test footage looks good, but I do wonder how much those colors can be brought out. hmmm.
    Also, how the heck do you get an R5C?! They are out of stock everywhere!!!

    • @CinemaSteve

      I'd say you won't notice a difference if you get an R5C. It's so damn versatile and there are ways to squeeze out more DR as well. I think Gerald Undone has a video about it. As much as I loved my BMPCC6K, I HATED taking it anywhere and shooting. It was such a pain in my ass. I ended up with a C70 and I will never go back to BMD. Build quality alone is massive in Canon's favor, plus with all the compression of RUclips and Instagram, DR for me matters less. Things that look good on your end might get crushed with artifacts on upload anyway. And it's not like the R5C's DR is bad either. I would say that you'll be much more motivated to even start creating again just because of how much easier it is with the R5C over the BMPCC6K. And that is the biggest factor for me.

    I just (yesterday) decided on an r3 after going through my less detailed version of this list. Realistically a c300, c500 or even a c200 is a far better option as an A-cam and the r3 is a far better b/c cam for photo/video. You will eventually want IBIS if you shoot photos or handhold the camera for a quick shot. You know - b cam stuff! I also think if you shoot RAW (which you really should in 2022) both the c70 and r5c are somewhat iffy. I don't trust the c70's SD card solution and compression (although nobody's complaining about it yet) and I also don't want the r5c's 8k RAW solution. For me, r3 seems like the best bet. Except for, you know, shutter angle and waveform all the obvious headaches of it not actually being a video camera.

      R5 has less dynamic range which is the most important thing if it comes to filming and image quality. Filming in 8 k will be never relevant. People buy 1080 screens in 2023 , not even 4k as the files are just to big. A movie can have 20-30 gb in 4k, no one wants this and 8k is 4 times larger..

      @@castielvargastv7931 Asumming you meant R5C, you can actually get pretty close to the same dynamic range as the C70 in RAW. 8k will be more relevant in the future because it gives you the ability to crop in without losing as much image quality. Not necessarily because everyone with have 8k screens. Also 8k files sizes are big now, but its possible new codex's will compress footage more without sacrificing too much image quality, thus having smaller file sizes.
