The fact that the C70 can recover so much information and it’s not recording in RAW really shows the performance of this camera. The “it sucks the C70 can’t shoot in RAW” goes out the window. The 10bit on the C70 is phenomenal and the fact that it’s much easier to edit makes it a solid option.
Exactly. I went in to this assuming the c200 raw would do better in the extreme situations, but the c70 is a freaking beast. Let’s hang soon bro! Thanks for checking out the video.
My thoughts exactly!
Agreed about RAW.... Honestly, I rarely shoot RAW even on commercials. My biggest complaint is SDI. If Canon does bring a C90, I sincerely hope it gets SDI. C70 DR is exceptional in the darks.
Why no one mentions compression, that the C70 shoots in Long GOP except at 25fps

Thanks for the tests. As a C200 owner I still love the colour on the C200. I dont know what it is but it has a vibe. But that sensor needs light. ETTR
I agree I kind of like the green shadows. I actually tint my c70 green to make it look more like the c200.
@@GriffinConway do you only push green into the shadows? or how do you grade it to match the c200?
Actually... nope. ETTR does not help to get better images
@@GriffinConway would also like to know how exactly do you tint it green. Thank you!
@@CrisBagginsi use ETTL most times and it does give me better images, but it actually need to have a lot of light to do it.
So at:
ISI 100
f2.8
1/48
The image needs to be exposed properly until the shadows are clean, I then underexpose my image until it my shadows are just about to reach the noise floor. In post i raise the shadows by +30 and the result always impressed me. Modern sensors are MUCH better at recovering shadows than highlights.
I only do this when the scene is lit in a way that I need to either prioritise shadows or highlights. This way I can get both into the image
Griffin - your camera comparisons are reviews are some of my favorites - really practical, useful info.
Thank you Curtis! The feelings are mutual for all the audio and lighting reviews that I watch yours are my favorite
Thanks for this video!!! The C70 is a great step for canon and I think it’s going to be a very popular camera.
I agree! Thanks a lot. I’m a fan of your channel by the way. Great stuff on there!
Hey Griffin, love your videos, so wonderful to follow your thoughts and honest views on the gear! Thanks for doing such informative content.
great comparison Griffin! solid work as always
I'm pumped for the r5 comparison!
quick, to-the-point and quality comparison. thanks for the content. subscribed!
Excellent tests and objectivity. Thank you!
Canon C200 with its RAW video directly to the card is the most ideal camera for movies!
C200 raw is great if you can handle the workflow!
Subscribed! You and Carlos together have given me a wealth of valuable info in making my decision to finally buy the C70. I am almost there!😁🙏🏾
Thanks a lot! Glad you find value here!
Great video as usual brother. We have a 200 and we’re thinking about the 70 right now. This video was really helpful. We appreciate you.
Awesome! Glad I could help! Hit me up with any questions
Excellent info dude! Great video! The C70 is definitely going to be my next camera!
C70 is such a great camera!
Nice video. I’m looking forward to the R5/1DX/C70 comparison.
Great video - thanks for the exhaustive side by side examples. I really wonder if Canon is going to come out with the C200 Mark 2 or if it was just a bunch of hype. Two things that really bug me on the C70 - no EVF and bad hinge on the display. Still waiting on my choice to upgrade to 4k from my old C100 Mark 2.
The one video we’ve been waiting for...
Let me get the popcorn 😎🍿
Haha thanks for watching!!
Oooh Griffin got some hands 👊 Great info as always
Just came across your channel today. Wonderful videos. I'm a C200 owner and looking at the C70 (hoping the C90 may have an SDI among other tiny wishes). Great review, subscribed!
Solid review and comparison. Your conclusions are much appreciated.
Glad you liked it! Thanks Robert!
Great test! Thanks for the great job!
Thanks Paul!
Great video just purchased the C70 and been using it for a lot of professional work. Love it
That’s awesome Michael! Hit me up with any questions you have!
Sir, you got me subscribed! Thanks a lot for this down to earth in-depth review. Greetings from Switzerland from a C300 MkI owner who just switched from the 5D MkII =) Man, started to love the Canon C series!
Awesome comparison! Looking forward to more C70 videos
Thank you!
You can tell by the likes how helpful this video was over a lot of other C70 videos. Cheers mate, real world feel to this. Much more worthwhile than a full time RUclipsr / Reviewer opinion.
Thanks a lot! Really appreciate the kind words 🙌
Damn your channel just randomly popped up. Great breakdown really enjoyed learning the difference of these 2 cameras
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked jt
Thank you for comparing them! I want both!
You are welcome they are both great options!
Great job Griffin :)

Great video. Very helpful. Thanks.
Thanks so much Glenn!
I love you videos man.
Always crushing it💯.. Now I'm waiting for C70 vs 1DX mark iii.
Please.
That one is coming up for sure! Appreciate the kind words 🙌
Yes please!
Great comparison. The file size of RAW is also the main reason I'm swapping my C200 for FX6. I've loved the camera, but with better alternatives, theres no reason to stick around anymore.
There’s a lot of great options out there!
Great review! Thank you! :) Considerin to buy the C70 in 2024 haha. What lens did you use at the high iso test at night?
Great comparison review.
Thanks!Glad you enjoyed it
I love your videos and this channel very great info for us.
Thanks for being here Pablo! I appreciate you watching!
Super helpful video. I'm trying to decide whether to buy a C70, a Sony CX6, or a RED Komodo.
Great video mate. Can you tell me if you were using the speed booster on the c70 for the low light or RF lenses?
really looking forward to the C70 speed booster review
Great in depth review! Keep seeing c 70 videos and it’s making me lean more to it over the fx6 but still having a hard time deciding 🥴
You can’t go wrong with either...but for me, I’m team canon all the way lol
Thanks. I needed to hear that. Got a C70 coming.
I’m sure you will love it! It’s a great camera
2:43 I'm glad to hear someone else mention the greener look on the C200. I've also been shooting with the C200 for a couple years, and when comparing to my C100 Mk2, I definitely noticed the C200 leans a little greener. I always thought it was interesting that Canon did this with the C200. It's not a bad thing necessarily, as I really like the look of the C200, but it's definitely interesting Canon did that.
Totally agree, I actually kind of like it
Hello great video. Did you use the same lens for each camera? Or did the C70 have an RF and the C200 have an EF? It seems as if you used RF for one and EF for the other. Thanks Cheers from LA! Frank
Awesome video, thank you so very much! Did you every shoot externally with the C200 in to an Atomos or other similar external monitor? I have used my C100 MKII with an external Shogun Inferno recording ProRes (fake 4.2.2.) 8 bit.
I’m thinking about getting a C70 but I’m still interested in the C200. I’m not top notch like you and some of the others commenting. I’m just a lil old ,novice, grandpa who has found some really nice cheap cinema cameras. I’m going to stick them in the faces of my family for all of our events and Sunday School review video content.
Thanks again - I also use a Ninja Blade
Dude this is a wicked comparison. Great comparisons and basically the same as my thoughts. C200 is amazing, but the RAW was a killer with no compression ratios.
Good job, thanks. Waiting for speed booster review.
I just finished it. Uploading on Monday 👍
Love your insights, they're refreshing thoughts you don't get to hear on other channels. Thank you!
Thanks so much Christopher! Really appreciate the kind words 🙌
Awesome sauce. Thank you!
Thanks Andres!
C200 user also and working with Canon Cinema Raw Light works very well in Resolve. No issues what so ever except the larger files sizes.
I agree resolve is way more optimized than premiere for cinema raw light. Unfortunately my editing team I work with is all in premiere so no switching for me
I think that the differences in high-ISO performance reflect the different gain architectures of the two cameras. The C200 uses conventional preamps, with a limited selection of physically realizable analog gains. The sensor behaves optimally when shooting at ISOs corresponding to those gains (400 and perhaps somewhere around 1600?), but shows increased noise when operating in between, because it has to use a lower-than-ideal analog gain and then scale digitally.
The C70 has dual simultaneous gains, meaning that it applies both low- and high-gains to every sample, and then combines the resulting values. Light tones can use the results of the low gain if they would have saturated at the high gain, while shadows always benefit from the high gain. You would expect such a camera to have an advantage at low/mid ISOs as you saw, because at ultra-high ISO both cameras are basically using their highest gain for every sample (put another way, even the brightest scene tones are so dark that the C70 can use its high gain without saturating) and in that scenario the C70's dual-gain architecture doesn't give it any advantage.
You rock Griffin!
Thanks so much!
Hey Griffin, can you let us know what conversion or technical LUT you use for clog2? I’m curious what people are using for C70 and the like. And are you using similar Luts for something like the R5? Thanks.
Hi nice video. Which Sd card do you use for the C70?
Solid review! Looks like it should pair well with the c500
Heck ya! Thanks for checking the video out Fraser!
5:01 - I definitely see the same things in my tests. Even when recording in 8-bit on the C200. The shadows in the Canon Raw Light files are always really noisy because there is no noise reduction done in camera and I don't want to have to do that in post on export.
Exactly. A few people complained I didn’t do noise reduction in my test. However, I find that it takes forever and really slows down my workflow, so I tend to just shoot lower ISO’s and light the scene for proper exposure with the c200
Planning for this camera, but likely just going to use Ed adapter and not the crazy expensive RF lens. We have lots of EF glass.
Thanks for the video! Looking to get my first cinema camera and with the recent price cut on the c200, I need more in-depth insight as compared to the c70 (which is the one I’m leaning towards currently). Part of me is wondering if I should wait and see if they update the c200 this year but not sure.
Also, yo yo cool to see creators coming out of OC!
I think I might re do this test for 2023. Any specific questions you have or things you would be looking for?
Great Job 👍🏻
Thank you!
Hey man! Amazing comparison, helped a ton. If you wouldn’t mind weighing in for me, how do you feel like these two now compare for their current market value?
I’m seeing the C200 around used for ~$2,500 with the C70 around $6,500. I’ve just starting looking so I don’t know what the c70 originally ran for, but that’s a massive price difference. My biggest concern about the C200 is primarily longevity when purchasing in 2023. How do you personally weigh their worth and which do you recommend I make the massive upgrade to?
Great comparison bro!
I've bought my C200 after watching your review and now the C70 in on my wish list haha...
Haha I still love the c200. The c70 is great as well. Hope you and the family are doing well bro!
@@GriffinConway thank you brother! Happy Holidays!
Great video, thanks! I’ve been going back and forth on whether to sell my recently bought C200 and get a C70. This was a really useful side-by-side but I’m still not 100% sure what to do.
Thanks Ben, glad you enjoyed it. The best option is if you can rent each one and shoot for a few days. Both are great options though!
I have used the C70 a few times. Not side by side with a C200 though. I do like how you can build the C200 out more. That 4K 120fps is a real draw though.
I think my ideal scenario would be C70 internals in a C200 body.
What codec do u mainly use in your studios on c200 ? What codecs on c200 do u mainly use for clients ?
Hi Griffin, great video. When comparing noise side by side, do you compare the raw (without noise reduction applied) with the C70 that has noise reduction applied?
Yes that is correct. No noise reduction applied. Some people would say this is the wrong way to compare the cameras and the raw is meant to have noise reduction....however, it absolutely destroys my computer at export times, so I just show it as is and mention that I didnt apply noise reduction
Nice review @Cliff Conway. Did you do a black balance on the c200? May have helped with the noise in the black. c70 won most tests, but the c200 crushed it on the recovery from overexposed - look at the sky color, more information retained..
I black balanced at the beginning of the day. I have owned both for a while and can tell you they aren’t even close in terms of noise, the c70 is much much cleaner
Good comparison .but compare raw code and a 10
Bit Codec in terms of noise is a Bit unequal because raw does no noise reduction internally, it’s raw image.
But c70 seems pretty good camera for a lot of wedding filmmakers and stuff.
I understand it is not a “apples to apples” comparison, but I mentioned that I didn’t do any noise reduction and it would perform better with some noise reduction. That said, it is insanely slow to apply noise reduction in premiere and these comparisons already become pretty big projects so for the sake of time I was unable to do it.
Hey Griffen can you comment on the sharpness of the c70's image? I noticed - especially from the high iso comparison - that the c70 was noticeably sharper than the c200. Perhaps there was some sort of in-camera sharpening? Or maybe the sensor's really that good at capturing detail. Great comparison btw!
The c70 appears sharper to me than c200. That said, I never test sharpness because I don’t think a “sharp” image makes for a good image. In fact, I usually use softening filters. It gives it a more organic look.
Great information.
Thanks Alvin!
Great comparison. Was the C200 footage only shot in raw for this comparison due to 8-bit limitation (aside from 120p tests)? I'm very curious as to the EF lens performance on the 0.71x adapter.
Everything from the c200 was in raw except for 120p which was 8 bit because that’s all that’s available. I will for sure be testing the speed booster soon
Hi, may I ask you if you made ABB on booth cameras before shooting?
Thanks for the vid! Do you know what "color matrix" you were in on the C200? I'm trying to dial in my C70 and C200 for 2 cam interviews but am disappointed with how different they are. Thanks!
I always use neutral color matrix
Thanks for the comparison Griffin! C200 owner and stoked on it. Happy holidays and happy new year!
C200 is still an amazing camera. Thanks, and happy holidays to you as well!
Great work! I appreciate the detail and thorough explanation. Thanks for the content! I've been waiting a month for my C70 order to be fulfilled lol. I'm living vicariously through you guys lol.
Haha you will be stoked when you get it for sure!
@@GriffinConway It’ll be here on Tuesday 🙌🏾Woohoo! Lol
What codec were you shooting the c200 on ? Raw 12 bit ? Or 8 bit 420.
Great comparison thanks. I’m convinced that my C200 is just fine for a while to come. RAW will become increasingly manageable and storage cheaper. Can’t imagine letting go of RAW, EVF, SDI and overall form factor.
I’ll say a prayer for Canon giving us 4K 10 bit external on the C200 for XMas.
C200 is still a great camera! Thanks for watching!
That 4K 10 bit external will never happen 🥴
@@StevenFreitag yeah I’m with you on that one. But maybe ... the thought makes me happy for now 😉 Perhaps when 12 bit becomes the standard Canon will throw us a bone.
@@theampedlife the only bone canon will throw at you is one at your head if you don't buy their new cameras. Canon is the most ruthless company when it comes to product separation.
Can you playback 60p and 120p footage on the camera in 24fps (i.e. see it in slow motion within camera)
Although the dynamic range and sharpness of the c70 looks is better its just something about the look of the c200 and they way it renders color that I prefer. The c70 gives me dslr vibes but still a great camera.
Both are great options for sure!
In case I missed this, Is the c70 using noise reduction as opposed to the c200?
Thanks for the comparison! I guess I will be holding onto my c200 for awhile. By the way, which audio monitors do you use?
C200 is still a great camera! I use the Yamaha hs6’s (I think that’s the name could be off though)
@@GriffinConway thanks!
Awesome comparison. Did you do a ABB on the c200 before those tests or no?
No because I didn’t chance white balance significant temperatures
@@GriffinConway From what I have experienced ABB for the ISO you are in on the c200 goes along way on the amount of noise especially at higher ISO. From your experience have you noticed that makes a difference?
Thank you for your in-depth review. I’m in a such dilemma - I’ve got eos R with two rf lenses and want to buy either c70 or c200 as my first cinema camera. C70 costs here in the uk £4,800, c200 (also brand new) - £3,800. I’m still planning to keep eos R as a b-cam for now. I know that the logical thing is to go for c70 due to rf mount, but I’m gravitating towards c200 plus some good 24-70 sigma or canon lens. Albeit I’ll have two rf lenses 15-35 2.8 and 24-105 4 without much of a use. Really struggling here...
Go for c200. Color from C70 sucks
I'm really struggling with the form factor of the C70.
On my very first C70 shoot last weekend it was a live stream of a half marathon and I was shooting interviews with the race winners and going live to vMix. The LCD in the C70 is not great and I missed the EVF and lack of SDI to run our wireless transmitter.
It was like OMG this is just the wrong camera to use in this situation.
I'm in a spin here on what to do but just might send it back and swap for a C200.
We also run Canon Xf605 cameras, so for much of what we do the c200 might be a better fit for our workflow. Same batteries, similar menu set up, EVF and SDI.
I really don't do high end work with big client demands so maybe the 4k 8 bit from the c200 will be fine.
But for me it's the form factor. The lack of SDI and EVF are things I can't do without. Yes you can mount EVFs and larger LCD screens and a cage to the C70 but for me it's just all clumsy and I hate it.
Thanks again Griffin I really enjoy your videos
Thank you for watching! I prefer the c200 form factor most of the time as well. Although, I really love my c70 once it is rigged up. Feel free to check out my "C70 Rig" video. I show the different setups for different use cases.
The C70 DR is excellent and 1600 ISO is really fantastic. I really never ago above that, but having the speed booster with the .71x adapter with such a clean 1600 ISO will be really nice for slow motion macro work! Like many others, SDI would be my number one wish for this camera. Thank you for taking the time to make this video Griffin.
Couldn’t agree more. Sdi is the one main disappointment, but there are ways around it with a monitor that can cross convert the signal for example. Thanks for watching Christopher!
@@GriffinConway Ageed, I have monitors that can do that... but having the second port and having it be SDI would just make me feel good! ;-)
@@christophermcguinness totally agree!
@@christophermcguinness what monitors can do that?
did you shoot both in Neutral gamma?
Thank you very much.
Thanks for watching!
Hey buddy hope all is irie. What Is the best lens to do talking head interview? Or interview in general people seating talking to the camera so forth?
I would say the 35mm / 85mm combo for A cam/B cam is my most used combo. If I was going single camera I would use a 50mm.
@@GriffinConway Great advice thank you
If you set the noise reduction on the C70 to spacial:1 and frame correlation:1 you can get away with higher ISOs. You get no plasticky softness. The same applies to the C500.
I tried a few different settings with the noise reduction and found it to have some frame ghosting
I noticed you used a shotgun mic on top of the c70 and I’d love to know what you used to do that and how good the audio quality is when plugged directly into the camera and not to an external recorder. That would make a shotgun mic very versatile to use because you won’t have to buy another on-camera mic. Thank you!
I use the nTG 3. The c70 pre amps are very good. I would reccomend a shorter shotgun mic though like the ntg5
@@GriffinConway Nice, that's my dream setup!
IMHO the C200 has more of that traditional film look which is my preference the C70 is a bit to wedding video for me. Both excellent cameras. Thank you for posting.
what kind of settings do you upload to youtube tho, that banding is horrible.
That full boar RAW only for C200 was the only thing that held me back from getting it. Though if they offered 422 out to record to a Ninja, it might have been workable
Ya I wish it had the 4k 10 bit compressed codec...but its still a beast!
It would be great if you made a video about dynamic range i am having a problem with finding a video that breaks it down well
I’ll keep that in mind!
I thought your where doing a 1dx mark iii and c70 comparison.
It’s in the works!
That c70 is 💪🏾. Great Job. Was that you boxing?
C70 is a beast! Yep that was me haha.
Great test thanks a lot, I cant wait to see it with the speedbooster next to either 1DX3 or C500II :)
Looking forward to these tests as well! Thanks for the kind words 🙌
great little camera for a production company. Especially getting 2-3 of these for cheap cinema cameras and doing corporate work. I wouldnt get the c70 since there is no raw but def could see production companies saving money from getting a bunch of c300 miii
Totally agree. That’s my exact use case for it. I bought one and considering adding a second because I like it a lot
On big sets do they frown upon hdmi extenders with Ethernet? Instead of Sdi
On larger sets that I am on we never really use hdmi extenders. It’s sdi cables or teradek systems if it’s an extended length
12:05 you can run up to 200 feet with Fiber Optic HDMI "Available in a maximum length of 200 feet, fiber optic HDMI surpasses the distance limit of even some baluns, let alone the 65 foot limit of copper HDMI."
This is not what is usually done on professional sets for a number of reasons. In our particular use case, hdmi introduces more latency than sdi which causes problems for our multi cam switcher. Additionally, c200 can’t output a lut over hdmi, and it is not a locking connection either.
Is there any particular reason why all the shots from the C 200 look soft and/or out of focus?...
He probably just missed focus.

He better hope! so.
