    I own one, im in the middle of shooting a short film now. It’s a great camera. It can rival any camera on the market now. The image that it produces is phenomenal. Only downside is I don’t have the red pro screen to adjust my curves on set

      I totally agree man. After owning dozens of cameras over the years this was the first camera that i felt actually have a filmic look. Its strange its like there is organic grain built into the image but i love it!

    I currently use the Sony fs5 mk2 and originally I wanted to start saving up for the red Komodo but that is way too expensive and unrealistic so I’m debating trading in my Sony fs5 mk2 and buying An older red camera

    Great video, I am considering getting one as a young filmmaker and your video did a great job of breaking down its use from a professional in-field perspective. One thing, you said there was a video review that helped you decide to buy it, but I don’t see a link to it in the description. Also, what do you use for focus on your rig?

    • @epochfilmandphoto
      @epochfilmandphoto  9 месяцев назад +2

      Hey Luke thanks so much for the comment and reminding me to add that link. You should see it in the video description now. When it comes to focus of course im using the focus peaking build into the camera to actually see what is in focus. You can adjust that focus peaking by the way to suite your needs. In term of how im physically Turning the focus ring im actually doing that by hand. I do have the Small Rig follow focus and will sometimes add that but I try to keep my rig as lean as possible. Hope all of that helps let me know if you have any more questions!

    The reason it scrubs well is that it's using wavlet compression (a variant of JPEG2000 compression). That decompresses on the fly VERY quickly. It was made to do that. H265 and H264 are long GOP codecs. They are made to write quickly but to read them back your computer has to read ahead 18-23 frames and construct those frames on the fly as you play or scrub. They are TERRIBLY codecs to edit with. They were never built for that. They were designed to allow inexpensive cameras to write to inexpensive media quickly and with a minimum of processing power.
    In the old days we ALWAYS transcoded H264/H265 to a codec that was made for editing and didn't fall apart when you started pushing colors around. This is why ProRes (and DNxHD) was developed. Both DCT based codecs that decode immediately even with modest computer power.
    Nice video. Enjoy your RED. They are terrific cameras.

      Yea it’s been super fun and I’ve grown to love this camera. I’m probably going to start working on a workflow video for the camera from setup, to production, to coloring and export. I’ve got a music video project coming up and I’m debating on using this camera or the FUJIFILM XH2s. Either way stay tuned for that workflow video because it is something that would have helped me when I first started using the camera. Week 1 was slightly discouraging because I wasn’t able to get a great final image. As time passed and I learned the RED color tools the image has progressed into something that continues to blow me away.

    what would you say is a good starting used camera as far as Runtime? ive see the Mysterium x with different runtimes from 2322 hours to 1667 hours and im worry to buying camera with that much runtime would fail on me or not wort it

    • @epochfilmandphoto
      @epochfilmandphoto  7 месяцев назад +1

      Most of these older cameras are going to have the issue of long runtimes. Plus companies like RED no longer service this camera. You take a risk. I try and pay attention to the condition of the camera and the seller. When i found mine i saw on the production companies website that they had been using the rig to shoot videos for doctors and hospitals in controlled indoor enviorments. This helped me make the decision to buy it even with the run hours. Now if you see a camera being sold with high run hours that was used for desert dirt bike videos you might wanna reconsider.
