Hey Jane is about abortion and Judge Judy is about a woman whos relationship with him ended suddenly due to terminal brain illness.. Its not just about sex 😭
Is it just me or does Melon just... Not get song lyrics? I've noticed it for a while, but now it feels like it's becoming more and more apparent that he just rushes out reviews without even checking if he actually gets the song. I know we can all have different interpretations of different lyrics, but labelling Judge Judy as just a sex appeal song without even getting what the song was actually saying isn't the best look. And for someone who has been doing music reviews for as long as he has, he's missing some of the most basic stuff he shouldn't be. The last review was an egregious example, and it doesn't even look like it's just an isolated, rare accident anymore.
Yeah, I recently rewatched his review of Florence and the Machine's Dance Fever and he doesn't get a lot of the lyrics in it. Same with Preacher's Daughter by Ethel Cain
I think you are overthinking it a bit. He doesn’t need a book report on every song, and he wants to publish his review close to the release date. So he does generalize song concepts occasionally because there’s a lot more to comment on. Lyrics are incredibly important, but they’re just one element among the melodies, the song structure, instrumentation, tone, emotional weight, intellectual experience, the overall experimentation, the context within the album, and what the album means for the cultural moment at large. I think the other thing is that your interpretation of this track isn’t purely your own. It came from artist interviews, fan forums, and general discussion of the album over the last week. Nothing wrong with that, that’s what i do too. But Fantano is the critic here, he has to have his own interpretation. Going with the exact narrative is boring, we watch his reviews to understand why he heard it the way he did, not the way that the fan forum’s democratized consensus has concluded. All these are reasons I’ve been a fan of Fantano for years even without agreeing with him on everything. I still find it wild how upset people get over a difference of opinion. This also applies to Halsey, just because her lyrics related to her serious health conditions doesn’t mean the music is automatically good and free from criticism.
@@rockinblock5 I see what you mean and I agree too, I don't want Fantano to just be the another carbon copy of what the main outlets for music reviews say. I like his unique view on it ans how he goes about it. I just meant that lately, it feels like some sort of basic stuff just goes over his head. I understand a song is not just it's lyrics, it a balance between all of its elements and thats why I'm not digging deeper, but for a song like Judge Judy, the intended meaning behind it becomes so clear after a 2nd listen that it feels weird he just missed it. And about the Halsey album, the main issue people have with his review isn't the fact he rated it low (Though a lot of people feel a 1 is a bit hyperbolic, but that's just his taste in music), but that the reasoning behind her lyrics and meaning flew so easily over his head when all it would've taken was just searching up her name. You could say that she should've just find a way to include this context in the album and I'd agree with that, but out of all people to go this hard on, did it really have to ve the cancer survivor just being maybe slightly edgy in her lyrics? I'd understand if it was just your run of the mill bad album, but for this case and for how harsh and personal his criticism was at times, I personally think it really shows a lack of empathy and even basic understanding of artistry. Not saying he doesn't get music, but that instance wasn't his best review imo.
I feel the same. That teaser video where he marched himself and people with different hair"styles" into the chromacopia container then blew it up felt like a signal that he wants to move in a new direction after this album, so he jammed everything into this one and the symbolically burned it down so he can go somewhere new.
I disagree. I don’t think ‘Judge Judy’ was supposed to have “sex appeal” or made to titillate in any way. In fact, I think it was supposed to be the exact opposite, and that was the point of the track. Tyler (or this persona ) is viewing a woman and saying he won’t judge her past sexual relationships and he finally has meaningful sex with a partner where he is free to explore their relationship even with these taboo things. It’s a great addition to the album that is about growing as a person. I mean yeah it’s goofy but come on calling it a “skit” or “gag” does a disservice to the core theme of the album.
It's not just about sexuality it's a story about a woman who's also terminally ill and wanted to enjoy life before dying therefore he provided that level of intimacy which also allowed him to grow and learn things about himself which can be credited to not having judged Judy. Basically Tyler discovered that growth is also about being open minded

That last bit you said hit real hard, “despite not being Tyler’s best, it’s still a cut above the rest”. Tyler is a goddamn blessing in the mainstream and is pushing boundaries in a way that I’m genuinely so happy to see.
Who is the rest? I can name so many albums that are more lyrical and more vulnerable that came out this year. This one is alright but that comparison is inaccurate unless you're comparing to pop star type rappers only
@@lesedimakeketa5683 mavi's shadowbox, joell Ortiz 'war', your old droog 'movie', ka 'the thief next to jesus', to name a few Sonically, we will prefer different but these are just as or more vulnerable with better rhyming and from this year. I've listened to over 100 new rap albums this year. Naming some for me is easy
For me at least, one of your main criticisms of the album is actually one of my favorite aspects of it. “It’s not genuinely new in contrast to his past albums”. Tyler makes a lot of posts of him soloing on synths and jamming but none of that makes it past the cutting room floor. This album he really really let loose and let the production get lost in it’s own sound, especially the ending synth solo THAT WAS FUCKING GREAT. Genuinely such a unique sound and artist to be succeeding in the mainstream, who the hell else is topping charts with shit like this?
His production improves on every album and hes gotten so good at production that to get better at it is diminishing returns atp. I mean that as a massive compliment. It must be very hard to always come with such a fresh sound every album as thats not something many people can do. His sound is now perfected and if his future albums sound like a mix of his previous work well then you’re guaranteed to get a beautifully produced body of work.
And this is why I love music so much because the thing that turns someone off a song can be the exact thing that entrances another. It's wonderful to see how people experience sound so uniquely.
One thing I've noticed is that Anthony prefers experimentation to refinement and will rate albums lower for continuing to work with an established sound/style and doing it well versus something that goes out of its way to be different even if it fumbles the execution.
The way Tyler completely reinvents himself on every album makes it such a joy to experience his artistry. Even if you’re not a fan of his you have to respect the amount of time and detail that goes into his rollouts and his releases.
It's more like his Damn. He's looking at his past, his fears, his faults and his uncertain future, but he isn't trying to improve on them like Kendrick in MM&TBS.
@jech1216 you probably wrote this while licking the hot cheeto dust off of your fingers in your moms basement. You probably have no real job or are a child, so you have nothing better to do than ragebait in the comments for a review of one of the best albums this year, and yet your hard work of trolling online is completely insignificant, and a waste of my time not only to read, but to even graze my eyes over. I hope you walk out today and let the sun touch your skin for the first time in your miserable existence and realize that it's not worth it, and then go out and do something with your life
I love that people are likening this album to being Tyler’s “Mr. Morale” as the more you listen to it you can kinda tell he’s being very honest with himself and how he feels
we dont juuuuuuuuuudge judy! sonically and melodically its great n a really nice change of pace. n i swear the lyrics are not that big of a deal i dont really understand exactly what yall think is SO bad about this song
This is the rare completely correct Fantano 'worst track' take. Judge Judy is so melodically grating, and just lyrically not clever. But Tyler always has at least one kind of annoying, overlong song on his albums, and the rest is fire as expected
Did he not read the lyrics? He didn't seem to realize that Hey Jane was about an abortion, or that Judge Judy was about a woman that died of a terminal illness? Like what?
He doesn’t want to spoil the ending of the song 🤷🏻♂️ either way it’s not like he’s gonna love or hate the song whether or not Judy dies at the end of it lol. The singing is still weird
I Killed You is about heritage, not the politics of hair in the black community. The hair thing is a metaphor for that message, Hey Jane is about an abortion, and Judge Judy is about a woman who died of a terminal brain illness, how the fuck does that have sex appeal. The review is good but for someone so revered you do take a lot of things at surface level/get them wrong entirely
Absolutely agree with all of this. Also in my interpretation of I Killed You I thought as a metaphor for both his experience as a black person but also his sexuality.
on me like judge judy is literally a commentary on sexual compatibility, grief, exploration, loss, and finding comfort in someone you can relate to. yet mfs tweak about it because he talks about feet and there's moaning, like are yall ten years old
To be fair he's being generous, It's probably a 7/10 at best. It's good, but nothing really revolutionary. Fantano is spot on because sonically, Tyler is exactly the same- which isn't a bad thing because he was already good to begin with. But nothing has really changed, so it should rightfully deserve a 7 or maybe an 8 (bit of a stretch imo).
@@thebekg2050 didn’t it seem to you like it was just recycled sounds from his previous albums? don’t get me wrong the song writing here is amazing and all but sonically it felt like very basic tyler
@@redajelloul2182 i don’t think it broke new grounds, but I disagree that this sounds like basic Tyler, and this album is one I’ve been waiting for. I always really liked the musical ideas he’s shown like in the bridges in I don’t love you anymore and Sweet. Or all throughout Cherry Bomb really. It’s like he took that effort in his production and really went all out with fleshed out ideas on this album. Super pretty chord progressions and melodies, and great transitions to different sections of the beats. No rapper this popular is doing what he does
Another interpretation of darling,I that I heard was that if you hear the song how it starts out is so sugary that you can interpret the song being about "I'm falling in love with my lover every day again" but it's like a plot twist that is recontextualized that he is actually singing about he can't commit to one person which will lead to him being alone with just his music
we couldn’t disagree more about “Judge Judy”. easily my fav track off the record. Everything sounds clean to me, from the production to the song writing to the vocal deliveries. This song makes me wanna cry every time at the reveal that Judy has died. I think there’s more to this song than “getting ur freak on”. I think it’s about sharing a raw life experience w someone who you feel that matches ur freak but has ultimately passed away. While it is sad, Judy’s response offers some closure that a lot of ppl don’t get w sexual partners. Further, the piano synths at the end along w the gambino vocals makes for a very fever-dream like experience. I think it’ll grow on ppl more as time passes.
@spand9043 idk, i don't find them dreamy, I find that shit uncomfortable to listen to. I don't mind the overly sexual lyrics, but the moaning just makes me not enjoy it. Plus it makes me realize "Can't listen to this out loud in my household"
@@spand9043 I def agree that the moaning sequences add to the reminiscent-fever-dream-like quality and is executed tastefully. “These walls” was such a good comparison; I think “stay” off divine feminine by Mac miller is also another good example. I understand sexual content like that is not everyone’s cup of tea but at least it’s trying to add to the track instead of being shoved in for the sake of promiscuity like a skit from an R&B or hip hop album from the 90s.
@@matroxman11you have Chuck Norris on your pfp so you probably aren’t an introspective person in the first place. If you don’t like inner evaluation then this may not be your cup of tea. Just know that one day you’re going to have to reckon with your emotions.
i was in middle school during tyler’s odd future era, and it’s been a genuine treat seeing him blossom as a more mature and skillful artist throughout the years. flower boy really was the opening chapter to a certified classic discography
Really really enjoyed this album. Alot of Tyler's singing performances take a bit to grow on me - I was a Judge Judy hater at first but really like it now within the record. He's dropped 4 iconic albums in a row - only Kanye and Kendrick have a discography that could compare to Tyler's at this point
Oh so when Kendrick gets a 7 on his album he gets a yellow flannel but when Tyler gets an 8 he gets the white flannel? Really shows your bias in artists melon
Oh so when I wear a yellow flannel I get laughed and pointed at but when Melon wears it he gets happy comment sections? Really shows your bias in people wearing flannels man
The thing is, we were expecting a "new era" and we received a mix of past albums from Tyler. Which isn`t bad, matter fact, the album is amazing. I just think for Tyler standards i was hoping for something NEW in every way. Probably this is why the album is black and white.
I mean true, but this album is Tyler relecting himself over his life as a rapper/artist and it has old themes because he is reflecting of those old times
I would argue that this album not being super different is kinda one of the best aspects about it. Tyler's my favorite artist and each album that he's dropped in the last 6 years has a huge emotional connection for me. The growth he's had from Cherry Bomb onward has kinda made me feel like i'm growing with him almost. Each album of his 3 before Chromakopia each being so different from each other thematically and musically was fine for me being 13-17 because I was also changing drastically with each new era. But this album being not anything new kinda fits the point in my life where i'm at now. Where Tyler's finally discovered a sound he likes and wants to build upon, i've found myself and my personality and i'm okay with no drastic changes right now and building upon the foundations of where i'm at now. Of course i'm only 18 rn so it'll change eventually but it won't be AS drastic and this will last significantly longer than the other eras did.
I don't think the way some of these tracks sounded like they belonged on his older albums was an accident. Tyler's looking at his own legacy on Chromakopia. It's clear in the way he confronts the possibility of having kids, the way he deals with his relationship with his parents, and the way he was kind of roasting himself about his career on "Take Your Mask Off".
@ the halsey album was pretty mid but the way fantano wrote her off as having main character syndrome despite having a life threatening condition and literally thinking she was gonna die. That’s what isn’t okay. That’s just condescending.
@@Tetragramz this has nothing to do with having an opinion and more so the fact that he dismissed her struggles and said it as having a childish angst and main character energy. That is such a tone deaf thing to say about anyone in general.
@@ProspitiaReviews Overall I agree that his delivery and choice of words was absolutely insensitive, though I also think that, delivered with enough empathy for her predicament, some of his criticisms could still be legitimate. One of the lyrics was "I always knew I was a martyr and Jesus was one, too." I think you can make an argument that some of the writing like that, calling yourself a martyr like Jesus, does feel a bit angsty or self indulgent. I don't think it was delivered well at all, but I also think some people are choosing not to see any validity in the criticisms because of his shitty choice of words
Can't say I'll be coming back to this album a lot, esp with what I recently went through and what me and him both know he's alluding too.. too much trauma 4 me. But it was cool to hear more about the insight between him and closure about his Father..
I generally aggree with most of what you said here. I think the harder hitting tracks are some of Tylers best and I think they did show a lot of evoltion from CMIYGL and Igor. I think you did miss some of the lyrical depth on a few of the softet tracks, but I agree they were a bit weaker. I think 8 is spot on and I was worried you'd say 6/7 based on some of your commentary. Also, Igor deservered a 10, especially with how well its aged.
My rating: 9/10 Solid album, good choice in songs placement, solid features, fuckin hot background vocals, and a generational talent on keyboards in hip hop Fav songs: Darling I, Balloon, IHYFYH, Like Him, St Chroma, Noid, Hey Jane, Take your mask off Least fav song: Judge Judy

First album I've listened from him. Always wondered what his music sounds like as he seems unique. I'm a 43 year old white dude but grew up in the glory days of 90s Rap. I will say it took a little bit adjusting but I listened beginning to end in one sitting and by the last 2 songs I was really into it. Very very different but I liked the vibe
My friend got his first heart attack at the age of 20 but the family managed to spot him quickly and got him to the hospital. Since then they have been monitoring him carefully and just recently, he got his worst one. I paid him a visit, we bantered, reminisced about the past, and in the middle of it, I asked him how painful it was, and he said: "Very painful, but not as much as when anthony fantano rated chromakopia anything other than 10" we will remember melon
It’s crazy that all he had to say about Judge Judy was that Tyler was able to explore another side of himself sexually when throughout the song we find out the reason Judy was ok with acting out on all of her carnal desires was because she had cancer which she knew about before they got together and has passed since. It really put the entire song in a different perspective for me and made it extremely sad. On first listen I didn’t pick up on the subtle things and had the same line of thought as Fantano but after a listen or two more it’s one that has really stuck with me

good take, tyler production and album structure/sotryteling helps make him one of the best in the industry right nowe. its only been out for two days and i think over the next 6-12-18 months it will grow on people more and more. didnt disagree that judge judy is the worst "sounding" with the singing and moans.
@geraltrivia9565 id say stuff like noids instrumental has a classic psych rock flavour to it that ive not heard much from tyler. And balloons is one of the most uplifting songs hes ever produced it literally sounds like a mix of mario kart synths and a pop punk chord progression musically. Theres also some really nice acoustic and electric guitar work on this album which was very prevalent on flower boy but it was more chordal in that album whereas as here theres some nice lead parts and tasty licks that give new flavour to tylers typcial jazz and soul voicings. I never said it was groundbreaking just has some unique touches to his already established sound
@@geraltrivia9565this has more depth than Igor though. Igor is a more cohesive concept record, but this album explores themes Tyler has never rapped about before and this makes it different. Plus this doesn’t sound like any of his other albums. It has combinations of all his albums, but still has its own style
Everyone I talked to about the album has diffrent favorites with literally every song being labeled as a favorite, which imo shows how unique but good this album really is.
YESSS I really do think this album is gonna be a slow burner for some. So many people have such varying opinions at launch, totally interested to see the perspective in 4 years lol
I feel like Fantano often praises things for being experimental until it goes too far for him. I think the conceptual and comical choices fit exactly what Tyler wanted for these tracks. I don’t think I would’ve enjoyed these songs as much if they didn’t have these underlying comedic tones. So glad to get to finally hear what Fantano thought about this amazing album
Although Chromakopia is nothing new instrumentally for Tyler, he seems to seamlessly improve on what he was already good at whilst writing some of his best and most personal lyrics. Great record overall!
I'd also give this album a strong 8/10. Sonically speaking, this is one of Tyler the creator's greatest albums, from the production to the background vocals and his choices of instruments and beats to convey different emotions and create various atmospheres. Simply put, Tyler the creator never disappoints when it comes to producing quality music that is worth listening to. That being said I also feel the need to point out how great the feature selection for this album is. Every featuring artist is on the right track thus there's never a feeling of someone being misplaced on the album. I just wish Lil Wayne's had a longer verse on sticky. From a lyrical standpoint I have nothing but positive things to say about the album. There is a perfect combination of different styles of rapping ( Violent rap, lyrical rap, playful rap, anthems etc. ). Which makes for a captivating listen that keeps you wondering what's next. Songs like " St.chroma", Noid, Hey Jane, Take your mask off and "I hope you find your way home" are a few worthy highlights to mention. Although this is a great album I feel as though it lacked a consistent theme ( That's not to say that in order for an album to have a consistent theme all of it's tracks must pertain to the same topics. But the listener must be easily able to paint a clear picture of the overall goal of the album ). Going into this album I was very interested to understand this whole " Chromakopia " experience that was sold to me through the amazing promotion tracks along with the intricate and creative visuals. Why did he choose these specific visuals? Why the album name " Chromakopia " ? Why choose these specific sounds and lyrics? After a first listen I felt a deep sense of relatability and appreciation for this piece of art. But I also felt a sense of confusion that turned into a fascination to understand what this project was really trying to convey to me, the listener. But anyway I feel as though this album is one that will eventually grow on the listener some more as time goes on. It's 100% a classic that will age like fine wine. Great album!!! Hot take: " Balloon " is the least likable song on the Album.

This whole album felt so self referential !!
I also really, really enjoy that synth work at the end. I could listen to a whole record of that ish
One thing I've noticed is that Anthony prefers experimentation to refinement and will rate albums lower for continuing to work with an established sound/style and doing it well versus something that goes out of its way to be different even if it fumbles the execution.

Second review in a row where he misses the fact that an album/song is about terminal illness lol
TRUEE
Like someone else said, having 4 minutes of the song as in depth sexual fetishes and moaning, heavily reduces the point.
@ It could be that too, but it’s definitely not about hair. The hair thing is likely just part of the metaphor and rhyme scheme (heritage -> hairtage)
Cause there’s moaning on judge Judy so regardless of the lyrical meaning it’s still sexual in context???? Hope that helps
on me like judge judy is literally a commentary on sexual compatibility, grief, exploration, loss, and finding comfort in someone you can relate to. yet mfs tweak about it because he talks about feet and there's moaning, like are yall ten years old
To be fair he's being generous, It's probably a 7/10 at best.
Saying the first leg of the record was weak is an insane take

I think it’ll grow on ppl more as time passes.
people hate on the moaning sequences as if they arent dreamy and beautiful asf. They should give these walls a listen
I really do not like his singing on that track and the repetition is grating. Id generally consider myself a Tyler fan but this album ain’t it.

The thing is, we were expecting a "new era" and we received a mix of past albums from Tyler. Which isn`t bad, matter fact, the album is amazing. I just think for Tyler standards i was hoping for something NEW in every way. Probably this is why the album is black and white.
To be honest Tyler has given us so much it is hard for him not to rehash some old themes etc.
I mean true, but this album is Tyler relecting himself over his life as a rapper/artist and it has old themes because he is reflecting of those old times
It's sepia
Love this!
Would’ve been a 1/10 if it was called “The Great Chromakopia” and if Tyler had main character syndrome.

It’s crazy that all he had to say about Judge Judy was that Tyler was able to explore another side of himself sexually when throughout the song we find out the reason Judy was ok with acting out on all of her carnal desires was because she had cancer which she knew about before they got together and has passed since.
@@charizardmaster13wow your a loser
@@geraltrivia9565this has more depth than Igor though. Igor is a more cohesive concept record, but this album explores themes Tyler has never rapped about before and this makes it different. Plus this doesn’t sound like any of his other albums. It has combinations of all his albums, but still has its own style
Having Noid, JudgeJudy, RahTahTah, and Darling I not in Best Tracks is INSANE 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
1:17 thick of it mentioned 🗣🗣🗣🗣🗣
3:57 Frank Ocean Mentioned ‼️‼️🔥🔥🔥

FRANK OPEN‼️‼️

We got the closest thing to a future
Actually, Frankandopen is the name of the doctor, not the monster
If Sexyy Red had two verses instead of one I bet this album would've gotten a ten
Absolutely
If it was named To Pimp A Chromakopia, it would have been a 10/10
I lowkey really didn't like this album that much at first but I've been listening to it 24/7 since it came out and now I love it.
Everyone I talked to about the album has diffrent favorites with literally every song being labeled as a favorite, which imo shows how unique but good this album really is.
YESSS
I really do think this album is gonna be a slow burner for some. So many people have such varying opinions at launch, totally interested to see the perspective in 4 years lol
@@lavalampwaterIt's gonna get the Igor treatment. Watch. ?💯?
Hot take:
" Balloon " is the least likable song on the Album.
i thought the third verse of judge judy was heartbreaking in its contents
this one hurt. judge judy is underrated. personally a mid 9/10
real...
This was the most negative 8 review I’ve ever seen you give, Melon 😭
