During the first game, it would have been possible for Pyro to cast Phyrexian Dreadnought while the Tocatli Honor Guard was on the field (with its ETB ability not triggering). :P

Me watching game three: Ryan is really playing with fire not aiming his aggression at Pyro especially after winning games one and two.
Flash forward 5 min, yeahhhhhh they done gooofed.
Its always funny to see cedh games end through lethal combat damage after being so used to seeing them end via infinite combo's/fish consult
It feels like a yuriko ending
What I understood from this:
- Don't kill the Spirit of the Labyrinth unless YOU can draw all the cards first, and especially when another deck on the table hinges on drawing gallons of cards to win.
- Don't keep no land hands.
- Drannith is a strong card and whoever lands them first in a table where Commanders are used to win the game usually tilted the game heavily towards them.

@@PhazonOmega The difference I would argue would be that in mono-Green, and more importantly mono-Green Selvala, meant that no-land hands would be more forgiving if Pyro got Selvala to resolve, which they did. In Boros, and especially a non-Artifact heavy Boros with Winota as the Commander, no-land hands will be punished hard as most of her stax is Creature not Artifact-based, meaning that there is pressure to have colored mana.

There's a reason they call Selvala the Green Lamborghini - she's FAST!!! Although, the threat assessment in this game was WAY off, it bordered on not making sense at times. Regardless, huge fan, and I love all your videos.

As a Selvala player, I absolutely LOVED this take on her.
Game 2: all against folger while pyro was just killing everyone XD
All three games they bullied Folger
They just let Pyro go off every game
Can really see why having next to no blue in a pod really makes it to where certain strategies suddenly become dominant.
No black also, and no players playing any interaction or removal whatsoever. 3 matches of solitaire, essentially. Turns out Selvala is pretty good if you just completely ignore her.

That triumph into hoof was absolutely brutal. Love seeing a stompy deck played at a cedh level.
To be fair, I tihnk a big reason why it worked was that there were two stacks decks at the table. The stacks decks are not prepared to fight big mana, their hate creatures aren't going to do much versus big green spells and creatures hitting the board. They also can't attack the Sevala player easily just because their creatures don't match well versus big monsters. This gives the Sevala a lot of time to draw into an out or big haymakers. The stacks decks also screwed over Kalamax from keeping pace with Sevala so no one could stop the horde of creatures hitting the field.
I mean not to be harsh, but none of those seem like competitive decks. It's crazy that over 3 games, 3 opposing decks never once played any kind of interaction or removal on Selvala who generally is public enemy number 1 when she hits the table. It turns out when you completely ignore Selvala and she doesn't have to actually play magic that she just runs away with the game with insane mana.
@@LC-wv7tz I play Selvala (a lot) and this shocked me. She always become enemy #1. They fact you have to make it all the way around the table before you can get get things started generally means: you either play her when you've got protection, have one or two threats on the board for force an "either-or" choice, or immediately if everyone's mana is wonky.

Yeah the pyro was open for so long but they were so intent on folger...
I know, right. Igot really triggered about this.
Yeah, it made no sense. They just lost twice to the Selvala deck because they played 0 interaction. Instead of focus firing down Selvala, they spent their time trying to neuter Kalamax who might have been one of the only decks to play interaction to remove Selvala or counter a spell like Genesis Wave.
Really strange and kinda bad plays. In a pod with bad decks and 0 interaction the game simply goes to who can slam the most value in creatures. If anyone of them had run ANY kind of removal Selvala would have fumbled. But I guess when between 3 decks none of them are even running so much as a lightning bolt in terms of removal that's the way it goes.
@@LC-wv7tz Indeed, they call themselves control decks yet they don't have a means of spot controlling the board like idk a certain tiny green creature? Even I ALL of my decks high or casual take the time to put the minimum of at least 5 pieces of spot removal and at least 5 counterspells and especially if I run blue you will NOT run away with the game if I have anything to say about it.

I have a Marwyn brew and I always tell people to get rid of her asap when she hits the board. Sometimes they won't listen and boom. From 0% threat to infinite everything in one main phase.
And this is where cEDH meta-focused answers lose out
@@Jaakington I did the same with my Arcum Dagsson deck. Turn four Dagson, nobody bats an eye, suddenly there's a mycosynth lattice followed by a kill switch on the board.

Really great to see a big creatures deck winning in CEDH. The straight forward gameplay, granted it was tweaked for CEDH already, and the feeling of trampling your opponents feels really good.
That Apex devastator has got to be one of the best moments all year. 11 mana for a 10/10.....and an elf
The Folger hate is real... I guess it's karma for his latest decisions in previous episodes. :P
4:19 - pyro plays scale up instead of phyrexian dreadnought while dreadnought doesn’t have an etb? He won none the less, but that would have been 6 more mana and a permanent 12/12 trampler in play.
Why did they all target Folger? Because he was the only blue player? I mean, he was not a big deal on those games, or am I missing something?

Same, i'm playing a Samut, Voice of Dissent deck; I'm running Lurking Predators in it, it's BONKERS; to me, that's the best green enchantment.
@@Hyxtrem I use it in my manadork tribal-Chulane deck. builds board FAST but it is also less scary for my playgroup. I had one in my Mayael deck and that was NEVER allowed on board XD

I'm just going to take a stab at this before I actually watch the video. One of 2 things happens because there's only 1 blue deck at the table.
1. Mike Winota beats the table to death and offs the table with magus-esque effects
2. Selvala combos off a bunch.

If no ones seen Dragonball Zee! Specifically the 2nd episode, Pyro is Frieza. "I'mma whoop ALL yo asses. Mhm." That Selvala deck was too much. Stax deck? Control deck? Are ya'll running board wipes?! Then you ain't ready!

I'm really happy to see him on green deck win some games in a different way than normal on cedh. What I really miss is the budget cedh decks.
I think these games demonstrates what happens when cEDH decks run into optimised decks that go creatures. My pod is all too familiar, where the cEDH decks have to hold answers to each other in the case of an instant win, whereas the remaining players gets to run away with building value onboard. It's difficult to film a variety of games with different commanders, but I think this video clearly demonstrates the power imbalance that can occur when running into fast creature based decks

I’m so confused. Why did they ignore Pyro and focus on Folger, especially after winning games 1 and 2? What did Folger do to Ryan and Mike ? Lol
I mean, you see one player doing nothing, and a second player building up his board turn after turn... why are they not swinging at the second player?
because cEDH players sometimes forget you can actually kill someone with combat damage. I think they were just attacking Folger because he's the only one that's using life as a resource (in his lands).

I'm not sure we have the same definition of fight or control, he played creatures, nobody interacted with them, he swung them. If anything the other players actively hindered the "control" deck and just let it happen. Not sure what stax there was for large creatures that he had to "fight" through besides Drannith in game 3.
Those were some crazy games! Loved seeing all the different decks!

Pyro's value Selvala was dope as hell. I think that the fact more non-combo value based decks are becoming popular is a sign that cEDH is maturing as a format. You never used to see value train kind of decks
Minor mistake, in the 3rd game, on turn 9, Tana should have dealt 4 damage and made 4 saprolings as Akroma also checks for the keyword "Partner" which Tana has in addition to the +1/+1 from her having Trample.
Weird but it's right at the bottom of Akorma and it can be relevant.
Selvala being the deck that helped me bridge the gap to cedh many years ago this has to be one of my favorite episodes👍
Man there were several threat assessments in those games that I disagreed with. I feel like so many were focused on knocking out Folger instead of dealing with the clear threat that Pyro was bringing with Selvala.

I NEED this version of Selvala.
Big reason why is people aren’t really playing creature counter spells and it means your opponents need to use their best counters for what aren’t necessarily the best spells and that gives the green creature heavy deck such an advantage for sure
It is highly meta dependent. I don't see this deck doing well in a turbo-naus meta, it's just not fast enough compared to combo selvala brostorm and doesn't pack enough interaction. However, it is very good at playing in high powered non-cedh metas & in the right pod (staxy) it cleans up since most stax pieces do nothing against it.

Selvala is my first green commander that I fell in love with. One of my favorite cards ever made.

I'd like to test Pyro's Selvala against my Marwyn to see which one is consistent and faster.
Same, my marwyn is purely faster, but both selvala and marwyn decks die to removal or denial, mostly removal.
Pyro could have won with staff on turn 4 with ashya, by tapping salvala for 7 then pay 3 thru staff to untap salvala to then use 1 to tap for another 7 and then repeat the loop for infinite mana to then dump into staff to draw deck and win

Pyro could have made infinite green mana with Scryb Ranger's ability. He can bounce itself to its hand, add about 10 mana? because of Ashaya's power, recasting Scryb Ranger and so on.
Maybe he didn't because he hadn't any pay-off. Let's see what happens next.

I'm so confused though, scrybs ranger ability says activate only once per turn. Does bouncing ranger reset that instance?

Yes. If you bounce Quirion or Scryb Ranger themselves, you reset the option to activate their ability because they left the battlefield, so re-casting them would repeat the process.
At least infinte etb trigger or with some other cards infinite mana.
Seeing Pyro knock a no-win con stax list into orbit with infect was so, so unbelievably satisfying

After seeing Folger's behavior the past few videos, I don't blame them. I'd probably also be focusing him out of the game whenever possible knowing I can't ever trust him or his decision-making

Mono Green shows how it would be the scariest thing to exist if not for fast turns 1-4 combos.
It's really just no one playing any kind of interaction at all. Every deck at the table was Solitaire mode. I think Kalamax cast like a couple pieces of interaciton across three whole games and the other players nothing. When no one is playing counter or not even any kind of removal or interaction, the game essentially goes to the most "green" value deck.
I think this channel or some others did a sans-blue edh pod for a while and Gitrog just stomps all over it. No offense, but they are terribly boring games to watch as it's just 4 people playing solitaire until some slams a craterhoof/triumph or draws into some 2 card combo.

I would love to try my hand at the table with my Jhoira build one day, it's definitely not cEDH with its deck list, although it has a couple cards used in cEDH often most of it is not what anyone would consider cEDH, with it being geared towards rapidly achieving infinite Mana through myr or basalt monolith/forsaken monument and multiple fireball style spells, it can go infinite as early as turn 3 with a perfect hand but generally won't get there until turns 6-8, however I just make it paycheck to paycheck so there's no way I could afford it anytime soon. Maybe one day though. It would be fun to try my hand at a true competitive table.
Did we just not mention selvala draw triggers or did no one use them as its a may trigger

I think this is a metagame thing. The fast combo, or stax into combo archetypes aren't built to just stop fatties. No one really had just a simple Wrath of God just cause the permission and stax of cEDH is so finely tuned to either be the fastest or stop the fastest combo.

On turn 4, after you exiled the simian spirit guide to activate selvala, you generated infinite mana right? Unless I'm missing something, I don't understand why you didn't or why you weren't the one that was being attacked. Other than that these games were very educational to me as I'm trying to pay more cedh games

It's funny because Pyro could have just declined to cast the Finale of Devastation off of the Cascade triggers, because Cascade is a "you may cast the card" ability. Idk which is better, it being in grave or on the bottom of the deck.

Seems like all three games were basically summed up as:everyone attacks folger and ignores pyro and then pyro does his thing everytime
