Top 10 Three Color Commanders

  • While Commander is undeniably one of the most, if not the most popular way to play Magic the Gathering in the current day, it’s also the one with the most options for decks to play. Three color decks in commander often find success in the format given their access to a wide variety of colors without getting as greedy on mana fixing as four and five color decks. Given the lack of a structured meta and the wide variety of options for what your commander is, it’s subjective to say just what commanders are the “best” in the format. In this case we’re looking both at statistics of how many decklists for these commanders exist as well as their success at more competitive tables to determine what three color commanders are the best in the format.

I'd suggest a series on nicknames in the game. You've done well sprinkling terms like milling or mana rock throughout, but i'd be cool to que up you explaining where the multicolour nicknames came from. Learning that the names of guilds of Ravnica were where the two colour nicknames my friends used came from helped catch me up on years of setting and meta i'd missed after years away from the game.

My two current deck builds revolve around Korvold and Riku. The Riku deck uses cards from Prismari and Quandrix, as well as Arcane Bombardment, Double Vision, and Niv-Mizzet to cast endless free spells. I'm trying to find a right balance for it and Storm, since the Storm mechanic relies on spells being cast, and copied spells are added to the stack, but not cast.
The Korvold deck uses Gyome, Hoarding Giant, Tireless Tracker, and Academy Manufactor to essentially let me cast him for free, as well as search through my deck, and stack my graveyard, and gain life as a bunch of free sacrifice outlets for him to grow. He's a very hungry dragon.
The reason why I did this was because I wanted to expand my style away from just Dimir and Orzhov, so challenged myself to build a deck in every color identity. So I made 32 drafts and am build them as I go.

That said, I love how versatile Animar is. My deck uses them as a Mutate Voltron commander, I've seen tons of deck techs centering on the Morph mechanic, etc. They can be used to swarm the board with free artifact creatures and Eldrazi and do some infinite combos, but those are far from the only things Animar can do. I love that you never know exactly what you're getting with an Animar in the command zone.

I've lost to this pesky commander too many times, but now, it only happens when I cannot draw my removal of when other players don't follow suit and try to instantly remove it. For me, based on games lost against the following commanders, or games won if I was playing them, I would likely say Chulane is #1, Animar #2, and Korvold #3, and Iishin #4.

@@davidrosenberg9615 while I think there are obviously multiple powerful ones in each color combo and some are therefore missing. Each color does have a broken commander in each. I don't buy that certain color combos are stronger than others. You can find a broken commander for each wedge shard and it would be legitimate.

I can't think of a single sultai commander minus partners that would be better than Tasigur. Possibly 1 mana commander that reuses resources at instant speed? Yeah no, sorry, but Yarok is a joke in comparison.

    • @davidrosenberg9615
      @davidrosenberg9615 10 месяцев назад +1

I play both. You're wrong. Yarok is too slow and doesn't do anything alone. Meanwhile, Tasigur is a value engine alone that you can cheat price on. Tasigur is much stronger.

    • @kennellfrederick4367

@@davidrosenberg9615 both have obvious weaknesses. Tasigur dies to graveyard hate and becomes useless, plus it's political which is never a good thing. there are specific cards that can hinder Yarok's strategy.

@kennellfrederick4367 That isn't at all how Tasigur works. Tasigur is an infinite mana outlet in the 3 best colors that allows you to pick up your deck. It also cheats on mana cost and can get past commander tax.

Honestly, for this kind of video I'd just either pick the most used or make it a straight CEDH top 10. You can't just translate CEDH success to standard EDH viability due to the different playstyle. CEDH decks might be strong, but they are still up against three (or more) opponents. And bringing those decks to a more relaxed table means becoming the archenemy, and you either can outplay all of them or end up last.

Zur the enchanter in the right deck can be very op. Free enchantment with mana 3 or less every time you attack can snowball. I think my best run I had every card I own have hexproof. I had hexproof. Non combat damage was negated and I gained any life I would have lost. Make the other players commanders unplayable and no player could attack me unless they payed 24mana per card attacking (sphere of safety with copy enchantment). Then u add slow instant win card and make everyone hate you.

You know I started to notice a double-edged sword effect with videos like this. New players or inexperienced ones will see videos like this draw attention to the most popular legendary creatures in the format and use that as justification to build them and bring it to their next casual Commander night. Even including the busted combos that they content creator mentioned and blaming them for its inclusion. Obviously that's not the fault of the person who made the video but it's overdone seen people repeat the same list of popular legendary creatures you can run as a commander

    • @tonysmith9905

Okay, but a new player isn't going to drop 4k$ on a CEDH Tivit deck. At least I hope not xD And some one that's been playing for a while should already know the difference between casual and competitive.

Kess and Jeleva are the same. They are both the same storm deck. That's the problem with adding cedh decks. They don't really build around the commander. I can't tell, but it seems like this list focuses on decks that build around the commander.
